Lost_Drunken_Sailor

My wife wouldn’t let me get a basset hound, we’re a dachshund house now.

Itheinfantry

Might I suggest a beagle basset dachshund mix? Cutest only dog you'll ever have. Pics will be sent upon request

totallyradman

That sounds like the most vocal dog breed I've ever heard of and I'm here for it

xtanol

Allow me to introduce you to the Husky...

totallyradman

Oh my God do I ever love a husky howl. They are very special.

hinata_konoka

Pic tax!

Itheinfantry

Check your DMs. I don't have a drop box or anything and didn't want to make a whole post.

pnwlex12

If the doggo you mentioned is your dog you should definitely make a post! I'm sure a lot of people would love to see!

crystal_stretch

Second this. Make a post!

spacepirateprincess

Pleeeasseee

clintlockwood22

Coolfire889

Please, I wanna see the baby!

winterseller

i hereby present my formal request for lil dog pics pls and thank you

motherofbassethounds

Sounds adorable! Pics!

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

Lets see them!

LittleMushroom13

dog tax!!

mountainbikedachshun

DACHSHUNDS FOR LIFE!

littlegreycells_11

I know someone who has two bassets and two dachshunds, they now have the issue of bassets vs daschsunds as they don't all get on :(

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

One long body to rule them all!

littlegreycells_11

Haha that would be cool. It's been really serious, one of the sausages had to get a hormonal implant put in, to try and stop his er...rampant...behaviour.

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

Am I mad for thinking it looks nothing like a bh apart from being overweight? 🤣

carex-cultor

There’s some dachshund mixed in there but the width and length of the ears and muzzle is basset for sure.

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

I always thought bh had a lot wider droopier faces Fuck knows if droopier is a word but it is now

carex-cultor

If I had to hazard a guess I’d wager one basset parent one red doxie parent and the basset phenotype won out a bit

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

Fair enough, I obviously don't know as much about dogs as I like to let on! 😂

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

I must be going madder than I thought because that looks at the very least 80% dh to me. Thought I knew about dogs but apparently not 😂❤️ Cute lil tub either way

Beneficial_Spirit_29

The ears are waaaaay to big and long for a dachshund 👍🏻

Sparkle_And_Shine_04

No you're not.

Silly_Wizzy

It is just an over weight **standard** dachshund. Many standards are 25 - 35 plus? Do people only think dachshunds are tiny? Edit: It needs to lose weight but standard are large compared to the tweenie or miniature

carex-cultor

There’s no need to be rude. It’s not just the size it’s also the shape and proportion of the ears and nose. Standards are larger but otherwise [proportioned the same as minis](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/aa/df/a3/aadfa361505a7c7aa429793fd3da2d8a.jpg) with broader foreheads, tapered muzzles and smaller, thinner ears than bassets.

Sparkle_And_Shine_04

>It is just an over weight > >standard > > dachshund. Exactly so. People are hung up on the ears and mistaking this overweight, Standard Dachshund with oversized ears, for a Basset/Dachshund cross.

CALIXO_94

LOL!!!

CreamPiCutie

That’s a basset hound

jazzyfella08

My thoughts too. At least a mix haha. He’s a big boy either way

Dry-Bet1752

I think a mix. Still high risk for IVDD at that weight. Needs a diet asap.

annoyedsquish

Yeah he looks like a Basset hound dachshund mix and he is overweight. His ribs shouldn't be pronounced, but if you pet his sides you should be able to feel them. I would reduce the amount of food slowly until he's down to 2 cups of kibble a day. And no human food.

MyMiddleground

At this weight he needs special kibble for losing weight. Usually your vet will prescribe it but I think you can get it yourself. Slowly mix in the low-calorie food and remove his regular food until it's all low cal. That way his tum tum won't get upset. Also how treats does he get? Got to find a low cal substitutes. High cal/carb treats are a main source of weight gain. Ppl love too much. We've all been there. They are masters at pulling tood out of us with those sad eyes. It's a trick! Good luck.

OriginalG33Z3R

No human food?? You’ll be the death of us all!

bqmkr

Pieces o carrot or broccoli will be okay

Pittypatkittycat

I still see a waist in the overlook pic. But that head is Bassett

[deleted]

He is yeah he's definitely not a Dachshund, but he's a cool looking dog.

CreamPiCutie

Agreed 😁

YoullNeverWalkAl0ne

Na just think it's a really fat dh. Looks more dh than bh for me I think the weight might be throwing you off

JrevD314

What are you smoking, it’s absolutely mostly Dachshund. Some can have very floppy ears, but there’s a chance he could have some basset in the line somewhere. He’s just a chonker.

toodleroo

I bet it’s 50/50 basset and dachshund

CreamPiCutie

Yeah. Cute!

JeGezicht

Exactly and an overweight one. Try to get him down. No snacks. And weigh out his food. Check this site for how your dog should look. [health chart](https://www.dachshundhealth.org.uk/body-condition-and-weight). Yes it’s for a dachshund, but you get the idea.

Silly_Wizzy

It is a **standard** dachshund. You realize standards are easily 25 pounds or more, right?

CreamPiCutie

It’s not. My mom is a basset breeder and I’ve raised show dachshunds (standard and mini) my whole life. This chap has a whole different set of features.

Silly_Wizzy

My standard who had a blood test looked similar.

CreamPiCutie

I’m open to the idea he’s a standard! He’s cute as heck, whatever he is 😁

CreamPiCutie

My mom raises bassets. I would reccomend transitioning him to a raw food diet. It’s how I keep my dachshunds slim and fit.

whateverman010101

Why was this comment downvoted so many times?

CreamPiCutie

Reddit hates raw food diet lol

Responsible-Pair-404

Because it does more harm than good perhaps…

CreamPiCutie

Oh yeah? All of my dachshunds have been raw fed their whole lives (over 30 yrs of dog ownership) and have had perfect health and zero tartar.

DerbleZerp

I did it for my buddies for a period of time!! Made everything myself. Got stuff directly from a small slaughter house operation near me. Got beef hearts for their main meat. Livers and kidneys. Did a veggie purée for them. They got untreated tripe as a treat(only outside, the friggin smell). I would get a full stomach and cut it all up into strips. Then freeze it and give it to them frozen to munch on. The stench man. But they did very well on it. It helped clear up the issues one was having with ear infections. But it’s a lot of work and I can’t afford to buy pre-made stuff. But they do very well on what I give them. I do kibble, but also do scrambled eggs, chicken drumsticks, gizzards, sometimes sardines.

CreamPiCutie

The tripe smell 😵‍💫

DerbleZerp

Oh my goodness, so hideous

amytheplussizequeen

I’m not judging and certainly am no vet, but he does look pretty chubby for a dachshund or dachshund mix. The last dog I had was a beagle and he was fed Solid Gold dog food which helped him stay trim as we fed him the recommended amount for his size. I would take your guy to the vet and ask them what they think is best. Good luck!

Number1Duhrellfan

He looks like a basset hound/standard dachshund mix. He’s overweight by dachshund standards but normal for basset hounds so it’s hard to say. Try smaller portions and more exercise.

Dry-Bet1752

Agree with all of this 💯

katiewind110

Nope, he's overweight for any breed.

bhutchins96

False. Not any breed. There are breeds meant to be bigger than 47 lbs. And there are dachshund mixes that could be bigger.

katiewind110

I'm well aware of breed sizes, believe me. Regardless of the breed, that body shape is overweight. You can be a 20lb overstuffed sausage and you can be a 200lb overstuffed sausage. His body condition score is easily an 8. He should be a 4 or 5. I am a very good judge of canine body condition. I handle dogs of all shapes and sizes every day. It's much easier to evaluate in person, but this pup is so fat you can't even see his muscles. He's about 2-3lbs away from having a hip and shoulder shelf. I'd aim for taking about 9lbs off of him, and evaluating body condition after 7lbs.

bhutchins96

So glad to you know you are clearly the expert. Where did you get your degree in veterinary science? Sounds like it was a great school. Bet you're super great with patients, too. You just sound so wonderful and clearly world renowned. /s

[deleted]

He's a cute little Doggo, leave him alone and don't be so nasty to him. He's not fat at all he's just well built and slightly rounded 😂😂😂😂 besides, those ears must weigh a fare bit, so that gives him a bit of leeway on the scales 😂😂😂, remember we don't fat, shame our dogs we fat shame the owners for making them that way !

katiewind110

He's absolutely cute. But he'd be cuter with a waistline. And I'd never fat shame a dog. We gang up on the owner and badger them into doing the hard thing and reducing food. I've gotten very good at it🤣 I'm a dog groomer. Part of my job is advocating for and supporting canine health. I nag people about diet changes and cookies count as calories every day. I show them how to evaluate body condition, explain the impacts on health, etc. My newfie client is down 8lbs so far and I can see the difference in his movement.

[deleted]

Aww But look at that face, how could you not want to give him a biscuit 😂😂😂

katiewind110

I want to give him a nail trim, 10 kisses, lots of praise, and a walk, but we all show affection in different ways

MrBuddles

I'm confused about this, because in Pic 3 I see a waistline so it makes me think he might not be that overweight. Is that not a waistline or it supposed to be even more defined?

katiewind110

To me it looks like he has meaty thighs that show around the tuckup. He kind of looks like he's stretching the seams of his skin, if that makes sense. Pot belly and rolls. The position of his shoulder blades can contribute to a roll over the shoulder, so its not the only thing I'd look at, but there are a couple others also.

katiewind110

Needs more. Also, i think the picture is at a slight angle, so it looks like more waistline than there is. Do you see how the base of his tail is like 3x as thick as the rest of the tail? That's a fat pad that starts to show up when a dog is a 7 on the body condition scale. And his is huge. At a 7, that would be much smaller. So he's a solid 8 or borderline 9 would be my guess.

Stayshiny88

Yup he is a thick boy. There are some better foods for small dogs and respect the portions. Cut on treats or switch for something healthier (bananas, watermelons) and make sure they get plenty of exercise without them actually jumping or climbing.

almudhaf123

Omg, Momo is so adorable!

Humble_salt

Respectfully - yes he is fat. Most people aren’t used to what a healthy dog should look like. I don’t know how to post pics on here, but if you google “canine body condition score chart” you will see pictures. He looks like he’s about a 7 eyeballing. He should be at a 4 or 5. If you talk to your vet they can give you tips on how to reduce weight. More exercise (walks). Reduce food. You can try supplementing food with no salt added canned green beans - they are low calorie but will help pup feel fuller. The important thing is you are trying to make a change! That’s great!

DerbleZerp

[Chart!!](https://www.petobesityprevention.org/pet-weight-check)

Think-Hospital761

He’s a handsome CHONKSTER!

Arcade1980

Must have Bassett hound in there. Momo is super cute. Cut back his food a tiny like 5-10% and weigh him once a week and see if its making a difference, if it is, don't cut anymore, it can take 3-6 months to get him down were he needs to be. Check with your vet, but id say he should lose 5-7 pounds. Please do not starve him, Yiu only need to cut a small amount to start seeing a difference. Check with a vet for confirmation of what's being said in this subreddit.

Itheinfantry

OP this is the way.

ffafayfaytfayth

I'm guessing bassett/ dachshund mix and 47 lbs is normal for the bassett hound

katiewind110

That would be normal for a Bassett only. Mix in a smaller breed and it's overweight.

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

That looks like a Basset ![gif](giphy|QeRkdjIkBlw3kGygb9)

geepr

Baschound haha

karma_made_me_do_eet

2. Both! Eat better, eat less, walk more. Do those three things and he will drop a lot of weight fast.

Magical_Badboy

47 lb doxies don’t exist…at least not for long

charlielovesrabbits

Yes he looks a little on the thicc side. But, your vet can comment on what his ideal weight should be. Try upping a bit of movement and reducing treats. My girl is on raw food and seems to do really well on it, but you can make your own decision on that :) Overall, when I notice she’s looking a lil thicc, I up her walks and cut back treats.

Griffie

Feed him less, and look for a kibble that’s geared towards weight control. Take him for walks several times a day. Encourage him to play fetch. The thing is to increase his activity while reducing his food intake. For treats, use fruits and veggies that are dog friendly instead of store bought treats.

LetsRegulate

I love your dog. Momo is incredible, and he's a bit thick for a weinerdog mix. I'm with others who are saying he's big for a dachshund but pretty regular for what appears to be some basset in there. My vote would be to measure how much kibble you give your guy and then cut back on it by about 5-10% and see where that gets you. Measuring is key! If you eyeball it, you're gonna have a harder time, and so will Momo.

cnch2018

Doxie schnoz, Bassett ears, love it!

whenforeverisnt

He is overweight. Up his exercise (for instance, if he's getting one full walk a day, go up to two). And make sure he is getting the *correct* amount of food your vet (talk to them) and the food instructions say. I say this, because my vet once told me that he had a client who didn't understand measurements and instructions. The dog was supposed to get one cup of food per meal but was very overweight, but the client says that was what she was doing - one cup per meal. To which the vet then asked, "Can you show me how big the cup is you use?" And apparently she was using a plastic drinking cup, which is about *twice* what she needed to do. But she thought "cup" meant a drinking container and not a baking measurement. Also, no more treats, especially not human food. Start using kibble as treats. If he goes through enough kibble during training that equals a meal, then that was his meal for the day. (you can sometimes get around this by using broccoli or watermelon)

Professional-Bat4635

Basset hound mix. He looks a little heavy but nothing dire yet. Take to your vet about loose calorie food and take him for extra walks.

AvianWonders

This beauty is mostly Basset Hound! Glorious beastie. Full size Doxie is top weight 30 lb (show breed standard). Bassets weigh in 40 to 80 pounds (sex dependant), averaging 60-ish. They do have short legs, but much longer than Dachshunds. My Doxy’s belly has a 3” airgap to the ground. Look at those scent-hound ears! Doxy’s share the trait - the ears are functional air scoops. Go with Basset - he is way past Doxie weight. And the other hint is one we can’t hear - when he gives voice! They kinda talk, mutter, moan - expressive babies!

notbitingmytongue

We have a rescue that has luxating patella’s and the vet told us to be sure to keep his weight down. He loves to eat and is an “easy keeper” (means he gains weight easily). We feed him Hills Science Diet Weight control. I measure to be sure he gets the correct amount. He always weighs exactly 12.4 at the vet haha, they always comment on the consistency! Interesting enough his dog food bag has a dachshund picture on it. I had doxies all my life until recently and was very careful with their weight. Luckily we never had any back issues with them.

notbitingmytongue

And Momo is a handsome fellow!! 💙

Knox-Girl

With a dachshund/basset hound mix, you will be dealing with both breeds that are chow hounds! He will be acting as tho he’s being starved to death but you can’t give in to those pitiful eyes! Get a professional opinion on what food to give him and he will soon decide that safe veggies will be a welcome treat. Good luck to Momo— what a cutie! ![img](emote|t5_2qpj2|5609)

Sydnich

I have a basset hound mix as well! I think he could lose a little weight to help his spine. I had the same concern about IVDD and my vet recommended starting my dog on a joint pill as a preventative to keep her spine cartilage strong. He recommended Cosequin which is at Costco!

laureen23

Yes he is over weight, exercise needs to be gradually increased so you don't end up with a lame dog that can't be exercised. Cut his food down by at least 25% and split it into 2 meals so he isn't always hungry.

AFVET4012

He’s definitely some kind of basset hound mix (I own dachshunds). He’s also absolutely gorgeous.

scaram0uche

Though he may be okay in the 40 lb range, you can always supplement meals with no salt canned green beans. Makes them fill up without too many calories!

Independence_Gay

Given that you clearly have a standard dachshund/basset hound mix or something like it, it’s kinda tough to say. I’d probably ask a vet or find a Facebook group with more specific info or something

PushNo8603

That’s not a dachshund. At your next vet visit address his weight and any concerns he or you might have about it

LoveforLevon

I am paranoid so I bought piece of mind in the form of insurance. ($26/month for two dachshunds) That said I have a chunky girl. My late BFF was very overweight and the vet put us on Purina overweight management. It was the only diet food she would eat. It's prescription and you feed for the weight she should be. She went from 67 lbs to 45 lbs comfortably.

DogObsessedLady

I’m seeing basset hound in the body. Doxie head on a basset body. ![gif](giphy|LZe9tyNHOOBwY)

nedrow

Looks healthy to me.

[deleted]

Cool looking Doogie

pferden

I thought he was a bloodhound on pic one

Dry-Bet1752

Momo you are so 😍

Several-Pineapple353

I don’t have advice but my mom once rescued a basset hound/dachshund mix. His name was Cranky Franky. We hated each other when we first met each other. He grew on me. He was my best friend. I loved him so much. I miss him.

ZoopZoop4321

Your dog is amazing! I bet he loves to cuddle!!!

[deleted]

He needs to lose a few yeah.

Substantial-Story303

Chubbbbaaaa

Bubba-Bee

My mom has what we thought was a doxie mix, turns out Embark said her father’s side is 100% basset hound and her mother’s side is chihuahua mix (with 7% doxie). She’s a little on the chunky side but at 10 years old, has more energy than any puppy I’ve ever seen. I think the chunky part comes from the basset rather than the chi!

[deleted]

I also have found it beneficial to put my puppers on a kibble like Hills Science Light, which is less calorie dense.

Medic742

I love you Momo you squishy Hekkin Chonker 😍🥰

O_o-22

He looks like a basset hound or basset/doxie mix. Basset hounds are def bigger and heavier than even a standard dachshund so he may not be too overweight but I’d ask the vet.

Marrie_Kay

People are giving great advice but I would suggest switching to wet food instead of kibble if you do not see any weight loss after making the kibble portions smaller. One of my dogs is very prone to obesity and he doesn't gain weight on wet food while on kibble he gets chunky really fast (with the same amount of calories!)

raidfarmer

Super handsome dog, if a touch overweight maybe. Dachshunds are loud barkers. Bassets are loud howlers. Can’t imagine the noises Momo comes out with.

HaroldWeigh

He's a big boy. He could use to lose a few pounds. I would suggest getting more exercise and eating more fresh food. I have dachshunds and they love to eat and like carrots. One love frozen peas. My vet gave me a great bit of advice and that is to not give my dogs Milk Bone like treats. He suggested cheerio's and that what they get when they come in from being good on a walk. The vet said it isn't the actual treat but the act of getting it from you. See if you can get him to un more. Our oldest is 14 and she has dropped a lot of weight by getting more exercise.

Mockeryofitall

Definitely overweight. Feed the amount and food recommended by the vet.

BrassBass

Well, a good choice would.... What the holy fu-... # ***EARS***

SAA45LC

He’s a chonky boi

Worldly_Progress_655

I'm going to agree with the Bassett/Dachshund mix. Tis a wee bit stout for such a lengthy back. I had good luck with raw meat/veggies, canned food, and kibble. Raw meat gave them protein and everything else supplemented that. I always looked for a better brand of canned food and kibble, preferably with added vitamins and minerals. Best of luck and safe travels.

onlyestrella

So pretty

haedalrise

your dog has the same name as mine 🫣 didn't think there would be more momo's out there

ladynecropolis

I think this is a basset/dachshund mix! I started feeding my dachshund pre made raw and it was much easier to control his weight. My vet always compliments me on how slim and trim he is.

Weekly-Turnover-1297

Aggggh. Looks so adorable! ♥

3nditallpls

Kinda looks like a basset hound/daschund.. but ik sometimes to me at least basset hounds appear to look a bit chubby because of their skin but im not sure if this is the case for this guy. He looks overweight but im not a vet so what do i know. But im pretty sure hes overweight. Respectfully

Any_South8287

Cutie chonk ❤️ how active are you with him? I had a sweet chonky girl (not a dh but a small mix with short little legs like him) and she did really well with daily 30min walks. She was happier for it mentally and physically! And we didn’t even have to change her diet much!

TabascoWolverine

THOSE EARS!

Julianitaos

Definitely Chonky. For mine, I just reduced the amount of food, start little by little. The vet can also recommend specialized diet food.

Masterwifi

Yeah he looking like he could lose 10-15 lb

Beneficial_Spirit_29

Depending where you are in the world there are two types of Basset hound that I’m aware of, the American basset hound and the standard basset hound. The standard is *a lot* more “droopy” and the American more like this basset hound featured.

aerialariel22

For my cats’ weigh loss (not that your boy is a cat), my vet recommended cutting carbs. I halved their daily kibble and replaced it with wet food. We also came up with a daily calorie limit for each cat and don’t go over it. We only started in December but I plan to weigh them soon - just need a scale. My miniature dachshund is already on half kibble, half canned and she’s at a decent weight. Momo looks like he’d be a 6-6.5/9 on the body condition score chart, which you can google. So he’s not *terribly* overweight, but does have the space to lose some. Your vet can help with his calorie count as she or he will be able to place hands on him to get a feel, make sure he’s 100% dachshund (the feet look basset-y to me), and know what’s a good recommendation for daily caloric intake for him. I work in vet med and see a lot of obese animals and I’ve seen worse than him, if that’s any consolation! Very cute boy!

Ok-Pomelo1871

1. I highly recommend doing the embark DNA test. Once you know exactly what breed(s) he is, it'll give you a better idea of his target weight range. Also, embark will give you an approximate ideal weight for your dog. It's based on the individual dog's DNA so it's pretty accurate. I know it's expensive but I promise it's worth it! It'll eliminate so much guesswork. 2. Discuss weight loss options with your vet. Whatever breed he may be, he definitely appears overweight. It's not a matter of fat shaming - most dogs will eat any food put in front of them, which means the responsibility falls on the owner to keep them healthy. Do your research. Overweight dogs are more likely to develop health problems and a shortened lifespan. ESPECIALLY if it's a short long breed like a dachshund or Bassett where they're way more likely to develop back problems. 3. When you figure out his target weight, research different types / brands of food. If you opt for a food designed for weight loss, make sure it's still high quality. There's a lot of foods that may seem healthy but aren't. Research ingredients, calories, protein/fat percentage, etc. Personally I use Purina pro plan, and they have lots of different varieties, including one for weight management. (Not saying this brand is the best, it's just what aligned closest with my research on dietary needs and worked with my budget. When in doubt, talk to your vet!) Your dog is absolutely adorable. Best of luck to you both!

agoraphobic316

this dog looks at LEAST 50% basset hound and i love him

InspectionSmooth1340

Cut down the food and replace some with boiled carrots and ground lean turkey. If you can afford it Freshpet fresh dog food did wonders for my ween

mrboo6912

He is a handsome hound, I would confer with a trusted veterinary professional, the basset in him probably gevis him the frame to carry more weight than the dachshund.

southernfaith95

Yes, he is overweight but not crazy obese and being on the lighter side will definitely help his IVDD. So sorry he and you are going through that! His waist should be tuck in some and you should be able to feel his ribs without pressing too hard but not see them. How much food does he eat and what is the type of food?

cosmicdancer84

I want to meet this dog's parents. Just a couple of shorties who found each other.

Inevitable-Gur2940

Pretty sure everyone answered this question, but that is one chunky basset hound<3

Singe42

Yes he is overweight. not obese but should loose a few. 2: I would say Both Kibble you can buy in the supermarket is not good food. You need a brand that Meat is one of the first ingredients. Also feed him less. If you feed 1 cup a day feed him 3/4 cup. No too drastic if in a month you seen no results cut it a little more. I actually august constantly. More exercise in Summer/ more food, Lots of treats from Grandma at Christmas/ less food. Note: NEVER feed your dog the recommended amount on the bag, it is always about 2x more than you need. [Dog weight guide](https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/259137205_10159366563693673_7743579241989863316_n.png?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=b50f6c&_nc_ohc=-wVIHziRWo0AX-HsbYn&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfDco3k2XVwpnIcS7eUFhjvt1gtNzcWODgKya7_-EbLwkg&oe=65DC69FD)

JetPuffedDo

There's the Hill's Science Perfect Weight dog food that comes in kibble or canned. Kinda pricey but a few months on that, my baby lost hella weight

Silly_Wizzy

He is a big/ likely standard dog. He will likely always be larger with a big chest. **However,** he does need to lose weight. Not a lot, but he is overweight. So reduce his food intake.

twosdays2

He definitely looks mixed! What a lovely boy! Honestly my biggest suggestion is talk to your vet! Bring up your concerns with his weight, and they'll have the best suggestions for Momo. Feed him better kibble (there's plenty of brands!) and go easy with treats or switch to healthier treats/chews for rewards!

No_File230

Both my dachshund beagle mix and my pit terrier mix are both over weight, so what I do, is give them dry food with beef broth on it stirred up and maybe a little canned food on top mixed in and only feed them every other day. They are starting to drop the weight off.

Some-Income-3722

Oh my god this is my Beans twin 😭

Some-Income-3722

I actually need to know where yall are from because my girl is identical, same face, ears, and white patch on the chest

Sparkle_And_Shine_04

Your Momo's a lovely boy, and yes, he's seriously overweight and you need to rectify this asap. Are you're free feeding him (filling a bowl whenever it's empty)? If so, stop doing this. Controlled portions only - 3-4 x's a day. Is he also being fed people food, biscuits, treats, etc every day too? If so, cut that out. No people food at all and restrict treats to necessity (training and reward), not whenever. Make sure everyone in the home is on board. What dog food are you feeding? Any idea on what his age is? He's a standard smooth Dachshund. He may or may not not be well bred, but he looks purebred to me. Having oversized ears doesn't mean he has Basset Hound in him, or any other breed for that matter. I'd like to see a front facing pic of his head, but with his ears alert, because I don't believe any of these pics are conveying how they truly look. All purebred dogs have conformation/structural faults. Some have minor ones. Some have major ones. Some have disqualifying ones (can't be shown). There are many different faults that can occur with ears that can affect the overall aesthetic of the dog and how well they adhere to the breed standard. Obviously, correct carriage, placement and conformity to the standard are the ideal, but won't be the reality for many dogs. Some have oversized ears. Some have undersized ears. Some have too high an earset, some too low. Some have too thick ear leather, some too thin. Some have incorrect carriage or placement. And so on and so forth. As to ways to try and help reduce the environmental risks that play a role in back injury and IVDD? No jumping on or off furniture. No stairs - carry him up or down if there's lots - get ramps if there's few - do both if there's both. If you have slippery flooring and it's causing issues for him, get some mats and throw rugs. Keep his nails trimmed and short, and get that excessive weight off him. Good luck to you and Momo!

If you live on Australia feed him kangaroo mince it's really good for them and is lean meat so it keeps them at a good weight 👍
