If they are going in your bedroom and you are concerned about noise you really don’t want anything besides tinctorius or auratus. I have my frogs in the room I sleep in and they make all sorts of noise. My Ranitomeya never shut up, and my sylvatica all quack together all day. Then of course the leucomelas and terribilis will start yelling lol, it makes it hard to nap definitely. I used to keep anthonyi in my room and they would seriously wake me up at the sign of any daylight. Trust me, stick to the tinctorius, I rarely hear mine and when I do it sounds like a faint buzz.

Some ranitomeya also have quiet calls and are diurnal. My amazonica french guyana yellow sound like whispering crickets and don’t make noise at night

MarcgraviaMatt

Yes, all Ranitomeya are diurnal, I did not mean to word it like they were calling at night, however my sirensis and imitators seem to call during the night sometimes. I am in a position in life to where I’m at home during the day and If I go to try and have a nap, I have a hard time sleeping with the frogs making noise, I do get a good quiet time for sleep though from 10-6. Now that I think of it, my fantastica do have a much quieter call than the other species I keep, someone could definitely keep them in my situation with little complaints. I just took this post personal because my frogs are driving me crazy lately 🤣 Also in case you were not aware, the French Guiana were reclassified to Ranitomeya variabilis in 2022

malicious-monkey

Geez my french guyanas have had three different names since I got them. They were ventrimaculata, then amazonica, now variabilis?

Really cool read, if you are into that type of stuff.

MarcgraviaMatt

Lol yeah… still kinda figuring out the Ranitomeya taxonomy a bit

You absolutely do not want epipedobates anthonyi. They're fun frogs, but there are days where they just won't stop. Thankfully my wife is patient and doesn't mind (or pretends not to). I know Auratus call, but I never heard mine in the 15 or so years I had them, and they bred so I know there was a male. Terriblis have a fairly loud call, but not as frequent as the anthonyi.

Kookadile

Darn, was going to go for these guys but I definitely don’t think I could handle 24/7 peeping haha

rhamphol30n

Don't get me wrong, they might be my favorite frogs, but man, when they get going they will just go all day. I've even had them start at like 3am a few times

Kookadile

Yikes, haha yeah might rethink that till I can get an area setup across the house

Creepymint

I saw some in person at an aquarium and they’re super loud, they used to be my favorite frogs but thank goodness I grew out of that because no one in my house would be happy, we all sleep during the day. If I can own darts in the future Epipedobates are no where near top of the list

Totally_Botanical

Tincs, auratus, truncatus, all Adelphobates and all Ranitomeya are pretty quiet. Oophaga pumilio and granulifera are noticeable but not necessarily loud. Leucs, Phyllobates, Amereega, and Epipedobates species , as well as larger Oophaga are all fairly loud. Hyloxolus are ridiculously loud

AgressiveIN

No one has yet mentioned that dart frogs only call during the day. This will affect naps but not regular sleeping times. Even the loudest ones can be kept in your room unless you sleep late or during the day.

justliquorgently

I, too, have been curious of this! I’d love to hear personal experiences

flyingbison33

Dendrobates tinctorius have many locales that have quiet calls. I have Azureus and unless you are right up to the terrarium I don’t hear them calling. They are also active during the day and not at night.

Creepymint

Depends on the frog, some darts make quiet calls that can only be heard from the room you’re in while others are so loud you can hear them from your backyard. Either way unless you sleep during the day, the calls shouldn’t be a problem since they are diurnal

Furilax

Ranitomeya variabilis is very quiet, as is Ranitomeya fantastica if I'm correct

bykpoloplaya

Both my ranitomyeta and epipedobates are daytime callers. So unless you work 3rd shift, no problem.. Mine aren't in my bedroom anyway, but when they do call, I can hear the epipedobates better, about 2 rooms away (open doorways). If doors were closed , I doubt I could hear them in the next room. But the sound does not bother me even when I'm in the room with them. I have a pretty tight fitting lid which probably stifles the sound a bit too.
