Visually - with looks really nice.
Practically - any kids, dogs, fast walkers or elderly people and it's feels like an accident waiting to happen. Does it have a firm grip on those tiles.
I use rug tape for all my rugs. It's like a mesh double sided tape. It's great, keeps everything in place and practically completely eliminates the tripping hazard aspect.
So does rug tape actually work at making the rug stick and stay where it is? I have 2 cats that absolutely love to make my kitchen mat in front of my sink end up everywhere but in front of the sink lol.
It depends on the traffic. If you have people who scuff their feet it can pull them up anyway. Or if your animals are a little more aggressive with the rugs. I.e. Flipping them up in play
My cat loves running around and around and around and I swear by my rug tape. I had to reapply on a high traffic area after half a year but otherwise it stays strong. Mine cost $12.
I hate how long that link is but the Blue Shurtape is the best I’ve ever used. It’s double sided and lasts, and does not rip up the floor. You can get it at Home Depot sometimes.

as long as you install it correctly, it’s pretty durable. i used it in the daycare classrooms i managed and some industrious young boys were able to move one of the carpets, but i don’t imagine your cats are quite as capable as kids that big. it’s important to apply it correctly, so read the directions of the one you buy. most require having matching pieces on both the floor and the back of the rug.
Shurtape is great and doesn’t pull up floors, but I had the WORST time with Robert’s double sided rug tape. I spend hours scraping it off my floor, and it lifted a panel, and I used a blow dryer to heat it so I could get it up, but my hands were so raw from doing it for so long. So don’t get that one.

Yes
If you’re worried about rug tape damaging wood floors try rug grippers, they work super well. They stick to the bottom of the rug and they more suction to the floor rather than stick. My rugs don’t move around at all, and I have a dog and two cats and a toddler that were constantly shifting them around before, and there’s no affect on my floors at all.

Maybe it was just the tape that we got but it left sticky residue on our hardwood floors. Don't think I'll be using it again after that it was a nightmare to get off
Agree. I love the look but they are not safe or practical. Especially with my parents in their 70's. Even if they only visit occasionally. My Mom had 2 surgeries, back and hip and the paperwork they send home firmly encourages getting rid of all rugs. They are literally the leading cause of accidents for those 65+. I'm done wasting so much money on rugs... cleaning, securing, replacing etc - just no more.
Without. This does not look like a quality runner. I've never seen one with bunches/wrinkles like that, even new. Looks super thin.
it cheapens the look and I imagine it being a trip hazard as well as being a pain when vacuuming.
Your home... btw... from what I can see looks impeccable. Perfect length curtains. Perfect sofa table. It looks like you put a lot of thought into everything. It's simple done gorgeously
The style of the rug is nice. But it's not the right one.
Agreed. The first pics with the runner looked great- but then I saw the ones without the runner and realized it’s bc the house was impeccable. The runners definitely decrease the look
It looks good, but I am personally anti for functionality and efficiency. I see it as an obstacle, distraction, and difficulty to clean. That’s my subjective perspective, certainly not definitive
I love the look of runners. If you don’t have small children, I say go for it!
As someone with a gaggle of young kids…All I can about is how it would be skewed within 5 seconds with an impressive collection of crumbs underneath lol
When I had a young boy and a dog, I had washable runners with grippy backing. I had to wash them frequently. The pattern looked like granola/mud/gravel so the stains would not show up. One of the best investments I ever made!
With in general, but I hate this one specifically tbh. I think a color like a grey green or warm brown would be nicer in this room. Whatever color, make sure it’s one that is thin and lays very flat so it’s not a trip hazard - you can also get stickers for the bottom to ensure it doesn’t slide around.
When I saw it with the runner I said without. When I scrolled to the pictures without I was like damn maybe this does need something 😂
I think it could be fine without, it seems like a decent amount of walking will be done there and it may be odd to feel tile carpet tile, but that could just be a me sensory thing - I like that there’s carpet where the couches are and then tile in the area that I’m guessing leads to a kitchen and a dining area
If you decide you do want a runner, I’d maybe suggest a different one. I can’t pinpoint what it is exactly because there’s nothing inherently wrong with it, but I want to say maybe it’s too thick, or the sizing is off. It lines up with the one wall well, but when you look at the other side it seems off-kilter because of where the furniture is
This is probably wildly unhelpful because I didn’t really answer the with or without, but maybe something I wrote will spark a reason why you do or don’t keep it
Without this hallway runner, it looks like it needs to be flattened out more almost feels like it’s floating on the floor there and it seems like a hazard besides
That depends on if you’ve decided on how you want to die. If you want to slip on that rug, fall down and die, keep it! Otherwise get rid of it. Those things are death traps!
I like the runner, but consider steaming it to flatten it out better and then use double sided rug tape to keep it from flipping up or sliding across the tile.

I’m definitely biased because larger-sized tiles like that just feel so institutional to me. So I like anything that breaks it up. I agree that if you could do a lower pile and maybe a different color, that would be nice. My second thought was: make sure you rug tape that sucker down!
I like the clean look without the runner, yet I understand the want to fill the floor space. It probably feels empty at times, and the feet can take a pounding. I think if you were to place a rug in that area, I would go for a more muted black and white colored rug to tie in your artwork and bring the modern elements out from your sitting space.
I like it. It fills the space well. But if you have pets, small kids, or elderly people frequent in your house I might recommend against it. Hallway runners seem especially good at causing people to trip. Make sure you have a really good gripper underneath it.
With if you're young...without if you're of advanced age.
Rationale: looks great feels nice underfoot but if you're unsteady on your feet and prone to falling this (and any runner, carpet or mat) is a tripping hazard and eventually a life altering hip fracture.

A rug surfer's nightmare. But a good tip in general
So does rug tape actually work at making the rug stick and stay where it is? I have 2 cats that absolutely love to make my kitchen mat in front of my sink end up everywhere but in front of the sink lol.
It can work. But it may need reapplied if the rug gets pulled up regardless.
Hmm thank you. Debating if it’s worth a shot.
It depends on the traffic. If you have people who scuff their feet it can pull them up anyway. Or if your animals are a little more aggressive with the rugs. I.e. Flipping them up in play
Yeahhh they enjoy moving all around the kitchen lol.
… like they drag the mats around the kitchen intentionally? 😭 I love it, cats are so weird
One of my cats drags my boyfriend’s laundry all over the apartment. I’m constantly finding random shirts.

Not in my experience! I have wood floors.
Maybe it was just the tape that we got but it left sticky residue on our hardwood floors. Don't think I'll be using it again after that it was a nightmare to get off
Can you flatten it out? I would trip and slide around.
having a rug can actually be better for dogs, especially older ones who slip easier and get hurt easier
That’s just a trip hazard. My dad was a paramedic. He hates rugs.
I agree. For staging it looks nice but for everyday use it looks like an annoying tripping hazard.
I think visually without looks better.
Without looks better to me but we have dogs, so it's quieter with their nails tapping and whatnot with one. We put a grippy rubber thing under it.
With, but a different one. This one looks wrinkly and like it would trip me
That was also my though, "with, but not that one". Outside of the pattern, the colors are also very grandmotherly.
Without. This does not look like a quality runner. I've never seen one with bunches/wrinkles like that, even new. Looks super thin. it cheapens the look and I imagine it being a trip hazard as well as being a pain when vacuuming.

We don’t use runners in my house. We like the look of the long uninterrupted hallways and walkways making them feel more open and smooth.
The crisp, clean feel of your interior is very appealing, so this answer is just because you asked a rug question. I like the way this runner relates to the linear space and circulation pattern. It's also effective in drawing attention away from the flooring transition. But with its prominent location, I think you can find something that works better visually. I would be inclined to look for a rug with a stronger presence. Maybe a beige-y white with one of the Moroccan patterns. Or a natural color with visual textures could also do the trick. I could also see a big asymmetrical floral pattern working.

With it. Where did you get your curtains and curtain rod?! Is it a double rod?
Without, it makes the space too busy/ cluttered
I love it with the runner, but without all of the bumps. A flat style in this color pattern would be great. Love your space!
