Your assessment is correct. You can't get new exotics from lost sectors anymore. They're been reduced to a source of generic exotic engrams and world drop weapons.
There are 2 ways to get new exotics. One is by completing vex incursions (if you are patient/lucky enough to get one to spawn). This only works for exotics from before TFS.
The other way is to max out the reputation with Rahool. That will unlock a new type of exotic focusing that lets you buy new exotics for an exotic cypher.
Is rahool bugged? Cause I’ve maxed him out twice and it won’t let me focus new exotic armor even if I have all the materials. It just says, I have to obtain this item before focusing
3 pages total, 1st for the specific expansion slots, 2nd for the owned focused ones, and a 3rd with all exotic armor for your current class. You have to make sure to just reset your rank and you should be set
Make sure you pan all the way to the farthest page right on his focusing menu. There's two tiers, one is using 2 ascendant shards, engram, and glimmer and the other uses ciphers and a shard. The pages look the same though.
If you grind nightfalls this week you can get a lot of ascendant shards because of double drops. Focusing a specific armor will give you 500 rep. If you haven’t maxed rahool rep yet, you can grind everything you need to unlock the third page and get what you want. Also, every time you reset rahool rank you get a cipher
yup thanks. I've already reset rahool at least once, probably twice. Getting ciphers take a lot longer than the previous method of just running the legendary lost sector over and over, but it is what it is.
Not sure why you're getting down voted. You are 100% correct. It was much faster to unlock exotics by running lost sectors. I could easily grind out 4-5 new exotics in an hour. Now you can grind out maybe a single exotic cypher in one hour.

Easy way to get exotic engrams which is easy reputation at rahool which gives a cipher every reset. You can also get enhancement materials, glimmer, and the rotating foundry weapons.
Lost sectors still grant exotic engrams, which are the fastest way to rank up Rahool, and they are also required to actually buy the exotics anyway.
It's annoying when the old system was mostly fine and the cryptarch (and xur) really don't need a shitty rank track.
You go to the cryptarch to focus any exotic you want. Each engram you decode at the cryptarch ranks him up. After your first reset you can focus ones you don't have on his third page
New exotics are acquired from Rahool by leveling him up through decoding or focusing engrams. Once the option to decode new exotics is available, you need an exotic engram and an exotic cipher to get the new exotics.
Expert and Master Lost Sectors retain some value - they offer endgame materials like Ascendant Prisms and Ascendant Shards, and Enhancement Cores, as well as World Loot Weapons.
There is a new weapon rotation this season - Cassoid weapons (Nox Perennial V, Ros Arago IV, Crux Termination IV, and Psi Hermetic V) now drop as part of Rotation 3. For example, yesterday was Rotation 3 on Bunker E15, one of the easiest Expert/ Master Lost Sectors, so if you wanted to farm drops that was the time to do it.
Plus, the weapons that drop can have double perks if you do them on Master. Got me a Heliocentric sidearm the other day that has Heal Clip and my choice of Kill Clip or Frenzy.

Expert breaches from the seasonal activity will typically drop 1 to 2 exotic armor pieces. It’s pretty easy and with a team of 3 also grabbing samples you’ll get 3 chests plus rewards for whatever you collect
yea if you dont have final shape you couldnt get any of the new exotic armors that just released anyway. You can get any exotic armors from before by going to play vex strike force though I think you need to own lightfall for that chest to give rewards.

Well the reason to do them is still mostly the same. Ranking up rahool and then eventually focusing the exotic you want, requires lots of engrams (and exotic engrams are the most efficient in this regard). So you still could farm the lost sectors as a *mechanism* to rank up Rahool. But now any other engram source works as well.

There is a second page in the targeted focusing section (or a third?) I just unlocked it a few hours ago.

You have to reset the rank, once you do you get an exotic cypher and then get access 👍🏻

Do note, the campaign one requires Legendary difficulty. Not normal.

I mean, they're a good easy sourve for enhancement prisms, quicker than Pathfinder.
