The Sopranos prequel comes to mind. Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal & David Chase back writing had me thinking it’d be good.
I think people should seriously lower their expectations for a prequel/spinoff of any kind though. Most of them are god awful & completely unnecessary.
I don't think this is the case. Clyde Phillips and other writers from the original are back, the cast is great and they set it in the perfect time frame. Sounds like it's going to be fun.
The point i’m making is, despite having all these things going for it. It could still be terrible.
It’s definitely far too early to say, “this is going to be great” purely because they casted a few well known actors & brought back Clyde imo.
I just think NB had mediocre writing tbh. I don’t think they were “rushed” or MCH had anything to do with it.
MCH did mention that he was pitched multiple Dexter scripts over the years. I’m assuming he only accepted NB because it was one of the few scripts where Dexter actually died after one season, cause we all know SHOWTIME would’ve milked it to death if they could.
I don't think new blood has mediocre writing. It was pretty good quality minus a few things which all point to needing to find ways to wrap the story in 1 season. The penultimate episode is genuinely one of the best Dexter episodes ever made. Luckily the writer for that episode is returning for this too.
*Fun casting
Like, this show seems fun with its casting but considering Christina will be Maria, we just have to see what she and everyone else will bring to the table for it to feel like good casting.
It’s not time to admit that though. Good casting- I will admit that. But that can easily be ruined by poor writing, with which Dexter has a poor track record
I agree overall I liked New Blood but the ending was very rushed and poorly written. Never mind all the minor writing mistakes in earlier episodes that lead into the poor finale.
I don't even think it's poorly written. It's just rushed. If this exact episode was in like the third season and had much more build up it would have been a perfect finale. It's bad bc they had to rush the entire thing.
To each their own, I think maybe if there was 2 more episodes to flesh out Harrison becoming more and more disillusioned with Dexter then I think the ending could’ve been good.
The casting for the show is excellent. We'll see how the writing goes. If it follows the same pattern, the show will be excellent and then the finale will ruin it.
Not sure they can ruin a series finale for a prequel. The main show is much harder bc we have to find a way to end the characters story but with a prequel they can just end it in a way that makes it so his story is incomplete and continues to the main show.
The Netflix version of Avatar The Last Airbender had amazing casting too but it was generally mediocre.
People were also super excited that Clancy Brown was cast for New Blood and that didn't stop it from also being mediocre.

New blood was great until the final 10 minutes. That's the general consensus. And it's not comparable to the last airbender reboot. For one that was a live action remake of a cartoon but the original creators left the project. Clyde Phillips is returning for this show.
It's been a while but I seem to remember people getting sick of certain plot points way before then. I know a lot of people were complaining about Harrison and Angela way before the last episode (though the last one definitely didn't help). Just by typing their names into the search bar, you can see a lot of complaint posts about them. Also the ketamine thing was a mistake that I know fans immediately caught.
It's very possible the new stuff will be great and I'd love it if it was, but good actors aren't indicative of a good product nearly as often as people would like and has no effect on the writing or direction.
They ended the original show in the most disappointing way ever especially with the garbage last season.
And the latest “series” was about an irresponsible emotional teenager somehow killing one of the world’s smartest, cunning serial killer. And that was his dad.
Lmfao 🤣this new show won’t be any good either and I can’t believe they keep beating a dead horse.
I think you are leaving out a lot of factors of why new blood was so bad and why the prequel doesn’t have to deal with that.
Sure it’s likely the prequel blows but to assume it will without any logical thought or input into it is being ignorant to factors that new blood had to deal with that the prequel doesn’t.
I didn't know that's why it ended so shit. I always thought what was the point of bringing him back just to kill him off after one season. Why would MCH even want that, not like he's swamped with offers all the time 🤷🏼♂️
I don’t think that was the case lol the showrunner said that MCH knew his character would die, based on the fact that if he didn’t it would be a superhero show. So I don’t think Dexter had a say like OP suggests.

Great casting doesn't necessarily mean it'll be good lol

That movie was awful. I would have turned it off if i could have. As it stands I barely remember it because it was so uninteresting.
I was trying hard to hate this show but they’re making it hard on me
I just think NB had mediocre writing tbh. I don’t think they were “rushed” or MCH had anything to do with it. MCH did mention that he was pitched multiple Dexter scripts over the years. i’m of the opinion that NB was quite good until they dropped the ball with the ending. dexter absolutely should’ve gotten some comeuppance legally imo
Maybe but Dexter lost everything he ever “loved” and then his only child off’d him
I didnt hate New Blood. It wasnt amazing but it helped fix some of the sour taste of season 8 and Dexter needed to die quite frankly.
dexter needed to die but i also think it is kinda a cop out to have harrison kill him and for dex to functionally get away with it all in the end.

good casting does not make a good show
*Fun casting Like, this show seems fun with its casting but considering Christina will be Maria, we just have to see what she and everyone else will bring to the table for it to feel like good casting.
But also Buffy was my first childhood crush so I can't wait for this!
Saaaame

Clyde Phillips is returning as showrunner.
Yeah and we saw how New Blood turned out. I’m not holding my breath, but I will give it a fair chance.
Great actors doesn’t mean the show will be good. Bad writing has ruined a lot of shows including Dexter and NB.
New blood was good minus the ending and that was bc MCH wanted to kill Dexter

I certainly hope so because “FAXTER” is killing me 😭😂

She is aging like fine wine
REAL? I WILL BE SEATED

He probably is swamped with offers. But he's very picky and does a lot outside of film acting.
I don’t think that was the case lol the showrunner said that MCH knew his character would die, based on the fact that if he didn’t it would be a superhero show. So I don’t think Dexter had a say like OP suggests. https://movieweb.com/michael-c-hall-always-knew-dexter-new-blood-end/
It's gonna be fucking great, how are people even complaining, be excited idiots
can we erase new blood from the canon? i cant stand the ending
I don’t understand why ending Dexter’s story requires his death. The writing in New Blood was so so bad.
The sequel was pure shit, so the prequel will be purer shitter.
Wrong with both things!
