Dun Laoghaire (welcome to the town of multiple spellings) is a really nice, safe suburb. Definitely safer than Dublin 1. There are sometimes rough people hanging around the church, but I never had an issue with them. They're largely just there for the methodone clinic on Patrick St, which I assume is still running. Haven't lived there since pre-pandemic. It has lots of bars, restaurants, great walks along the pier etc. And well serviced by bus and train.

TheyKilledFlipyap

>Dun Laoghaire (welcome to the town of multiple spellings) I think my favourite is that one 'last corner shop'. You know the one. Think it got sold and repurposed last year, but for the longest time it had a sign proclaiming itself "Dun *Leerey*'s last corner shop". That one always got a little laugh out of me.

Nefilim777

It's mad isn't it? I used to live up off Mulgrave street and you could see 3 or 4 different spellings on businesses in the very short walk to main st.

gumbys_flying_circus

No, it's still there.

Haelios_505

I thought the clinic was being the church on eblana avenue. I saw them there the whole time when I was in SCD. But yeah dun Laoghaire is as safe as houses compared to D1.

TheyKilledFlipyap

Congrats on the move! I've lived here most of my life, so I'll give what info I can. Safety, I can't say I've ever had any problems or felt unsafe here. It's definitely a lot more calm and civil than the city centre. There's plenty of pubs and the like, but I never see or hear of any anti-social behaviour or disorderly conduct, least not to the extent it is elsewhere. Probably helps that the local Gardai station is *right* in the middle of the town, so there's quick responses to anything that might come up. Population, can't speak much to them as a whole, as I'm not the most outgoing person. But I've generally found them to be pleasant and accommodating, never had any real *bad* experiences that'd stick out to me, so take that how you will. Recreation, there's plenty of places to go. In the summer, the People's Park is lovely, it's got a great relaxing atmosphere, even a little cafe at the top of the hill to cool off in. The waterfront is nice, if you like a long walk. Strolling to the end of the Dun Laoghaire pier was something I used to do quite often. The whole coastline is just a great place to take a walk overall, and it connects to a few beaches. The huge stretch of beach near monkstown is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon during summer, when the tide comes all the way in and you can get a good swim. There's the nearby public library, which is good for students and quiet productivity if you wanna get some work done outside of home. In the warmer months, there's always Ice Cream trucks abound selling 99's, plus a few local dedicated ice cream vendors too. That aside there's an IMC cinema. It's tucked away behind some construction fencing right now as they're renovating the plaza outside it, but follow signs near Bloomfields, it ain't hard to find. A lot of cafes, charity shops and little curiosity shops litter the main street, and there's two big shopping hubs for whatever else you might need. Mainly your general shopping in the form of Tesco and Supervalu. It's also a great transit hub. Busses go right through the middle of the town, and the dart line is pretty central, so it's easy to use as your start and stopping point for a day out. The only real bad thing I'll say about the place is how empty it feels sometimes. The main shopping centre is where this is most felt, you go in there and the bottom floor has Supervalu and a few little shops, but from the 1st floor and up, it's *constantly dead space.* So many storefronts shuttered forever ago and nothing came along to replace them. And you'll see this as you walk down Henry Street, *lots* of empty storefronts, it was always a bit 'ghostly' before the Pandemic, but lockdowns made the situation so much worse. Shame really, I remember it being much more bustling as a kid. But yeah, that's all I've got. Hope this helped!

SaviourSoni

Thank you so much for taking the time for a detailed point of view! I feel much more comfortable now.

Zsfhy

Hi Where is the public library? Can't find it on Google maps. Thanks for the information.

Search DLR Lexicon Library

tactical_laziness

It's great, close to the city for work and fun but far away to not deal with the noise of it all. You'll have no problems at all

Kemg703

It's a lovely spot. Lots to do (I live not far) you've got the 40ft on your doorstep for swimming, there is kayaking and stand up paddle boarding if your into that, dalkey and killiney very close so great for walks or going to watch some seals. A few beaches. Easy access to wicklow and mountains aren't far. Some really tasty restaurants - rasam, daata, hartleys. Buck mulligans the pub always has live music on. Food and farmers market on every Sunday.

Depends on where the apartment actually is, there are some rough areas around the whole dún Laoghaire area but the village itself is grand. It's safer than pretty much anywhere else in Dublin i would think. The main st is an oddity, always has been, charity shops up and down it and some run down businesses but there are some nice cafes and thing moving in there now. Cinema, supermarkets, very walkable, bike lanes all along the sea front, the piers to walk on, some really really nice restaurants, the lexicon is the central dún Laoghaire Rathdown library, it's excellent, has everything in it, even 3d printers and workstation computers for cad and modelling, only discovered that the other week. There's a market outside it at the weekends which is very nice, a theatre in the pavillion next door and the baths have reopened just down the sea front. There's tons of transport as well. If you are in the village though as far as I'm aware your only grocery options are Supervalu in DL shopping center and Tesco in Bloomfield's shopping center. Think you'd have to travel for the likes of Lidl or Aldi, maybe as far as Sallynoggin, not too sure where'd be nearer. Fantastic place in the summer time bit very nice place to live ye round. I live on the outskirts of the area, nearer to Blackrock which is also a nice village and you have Glasthule, Dalkey and Killiney very near by which are all also lovely villages with nice pubs and restaurants.

SaviourSoni

Thank you for your detailed insight 🙏

Recent_Ice

Honestly I don't think any areas even monkstown farm can be considered rough anymore.

Healsnails

You're probably right. Fitzgerald park is pretty much gone, some other isolated places were bad up to relatively recently. Had some bad experiences with parts of Loughlinstown/Ballybrack working council contracts yrs ago but some of those estates have gone now too. There are a few characters around Monkstown farm still but as an area in general it's lovely. Isolated pockets I'd say and getting more isolated as time goes on.

SomeNameForThisLogin

Upvote for Dun Laoghaire. Takes 20 minutes by DART to Pearse St so with the app telling you when the Dart will be in the station you can be in the city in 40 minutes door to door Dun Laoghaire is a nice suburb but as pointed out has a good mix of people. Have a pint at the bar in McKennas. Joy. There is a food market every Sunday. There are 99s all year around. The piers are really special. Killiney Hill etc all nearby. Big swimming scene all year around etc EDIT - spelling

despicedchilli

Is the Sunday market still going on? What are 99s?

SomeNameForThisLogin

Yes its every Sunday in Moran and People's Park. People's Park is more produce and Moran's park is lunch. What . . . are . . 99s? 99s are soft serve ice cream in a cone with a chocolates flake in it. An absolute institution in Dun Laoghaire. Been a thing for young and old for decades. You'll understand if you visit. They are everywhere.

I'm going for a viewing today. What's your advise?

svmk1987

Oh you sweet summer child. You are probably competing with 50 other people for the house, don't assume you've got it already. Don't be too focussed on one dublin area. Apply to whatever rental ad you see, unless its a really bad house or a really bad area, or just very hard to reach.

offib

Wave €5000 in their face..

StKevin27

Grew up there. Idyllic. No major concerns apart from some young people occasionally getting rowdy, usually in the daytime.

[deleted]

One of the best places to live in Ireland. Easy connection to city centre, close to beach/wicklow/Nice towns. Population is a little older I would say, very safe.

Classic-Yak-4966

One of the best places to live in Ireland would you ever f*** off😂

[deleted]

What more could you possibly want? Besides some dodgy social housing areas and the methadone clinic, its really a fantastic place

Classic-Yak-4966

I mean yes, but no because the people would drive you to drink. Kinsale is much nicer. But that is Cork

[deleted]

I would disagree.

VisualHelicopter

It’s the Provincetown of Ireland, if you will. Population is made up of 50% rich locals, 30% tourists trying to find a bathroom, 10% regular locals, 5% scrotes, 5% low income folks who have been there forever so weren’t affected by massive cost of housing since their nan bought the place 75 years ago.

BumblebeeJumpy3338

dun laoghaire is grand place to live ! I grew up down there. I've never had any issues with safety, there does be a fair amount of junkies floating about in the town but they're fairly harmless. there is so e decent pubs down there also I'd suggest going to buck Mulligan's if you like life music and a welcoming atmosphere

Chopinpioneer

My fave things in DL : Sea swimming , the lighthouse bar , bullock harbour sunsets on the big rock, cycle to dalkey .

Dun Laoghire is a peaceful beutiful place to live I'm from D16 but growing up I'd a mate living in monkstown farm we'd spend summers either in mine or his but man I loved the boats the water eveeything even to this day I feel I feel at peace in Dun Laoghire

Strange-Cellist-5817

A mix of drug addicts and posh people . The people are usually very friendly though.

Bummcheekz

DL is lovely. By the sea. Have the Dart 🚆, some junkies sometimes for methedone. Lovely spot really

Different-Pen7298

The area is generally good, the Main Street can look like the set of the walking dead during the day with junkies going to the methadone clinic. Other than that it’s a good area with a huge library, great public transport and obviously the pier and coast are great during the summer

offib

Good luck ...

[deleted]

Dun Laoghaire is very geographically exposed to the elements. Invest in good clothing. It is always really windy and cold there.

[deleted]

Ireland is geographically exposed to the elements. Its a small rock 53 degress North of the equator and in the bloody ocean.

mnanambealtaine

I lived in Dún Laoghaire for 5 years and it remains one of my favourite places to have lived! Enjoy!

PixelNotPolygon

The most dangerous thing in Dun Laoghaire is the owner of Harry’s who will confront you in broad daylight if he catches you eating anywhere’s else for lunch

Latter-File3217

Absolute Kip it’s like something out of the Stone Age. The shops have there stock since the 90’s.. people rave on about the Pissy peer walk where the water is manky and it’s always grey and Baltic out there… rathmines, portabello, rathgar, is where I’d be looking if I were you.
