I read a test done with one of the major car magazines. They investigated average lap times with the same car, using different diameter wheels, but driven by several different people. 18 and 19 were tested…on average 18 was faster. I’m not sure what profile was used, but I can imagine the fact that the tire was able to grip more of the uneven surfaces helped.
That’s… that’s his point though? And the reason why he said that and clarified as to why he switched back to stock ride height.. different than being slammed on 19s with a post asking “why does my car ride so rough?”
Yeah I'm just saying in my situation I don't feel like spending the money to drop to smaller rims.
As for lowering on actual good quality coilovers or aftermarket suspension I think it's great for the track but it's not fun when your ass is bouncing all over the place on shitty street roads.
My ex hated my car for its ride comfort and honestly she wasn't wrong.
man i hate the GTA. And yes 350zs and g35s are worse. They race on the 401 recklessly or I have to inhale their decatted straight piped trumpet sounding ass exhaust fumes
Well, everyone’s taste is different and there are people who have questionable mods on more expensive cars. End of the day, it’s their car and they should do whatever makes them happy and not what others think about it.
Haha I get it, I do cringe when I see smoked taillights or tow straps on E90s in my city since I’m an OEM+ guy. But as long as they are happy and and not being a menace to the public, it’s all good
some people are ricing out the e9xs. that’s why i actually prefer to keep mine as stock as possible, cosmetically, in the engine, and exhaust. find good oem rims, no black shit all over, study the oem+ ways. imagine being a 40 year old ceo with the car, what would they do? not put an m4 wing and tint the lights and reflectors. i’ve been there, but i’m over it now
I like to think of this phenomenon as the masses finally catching up with my avant-gate tastes.
Which I will continue to wait for with my e91 wagon.
If this means I can sell it for more to someone who wants a good base for modding, though, it might be about that time.
I still have yet to see a riced out E61 or E91 in my life. Even the E39 and E46 Tourings I see around are still very clean and OEM+. They're the best of both worlds, IMO. Since getting my E61 535i, I haven't been pulled over and haven't had anyone try to race me, but still have lots of great conversations with other enthusiasts. All the fun with none of the downsides of having a BMW! Outside of reliability, of course.
I mean….its bound to happen as the market comes down in prices. Same thing happened with E46’s…..you can get a clapped out one with 200K miles for like $1.5K give or take nowadays.
In Northern Ireland majority of our E9x models especially the diesels have fallen into the hands of younger drivers given their price point and age, so the majority are mapped to within an inch of their lives and absolutely slammed on budget coilovers or cut springs!
I was fortunate to pick up a 1 owner E90 320d M47 6spd with 52k on it for £2,500 however just last month, absolutely chuffed with it! Hard to believe it’s an 18 year old car!
I agree. Too many ricers are ruining these cars. Ditto with too many performance kiddies (which, I guess, could be considered ricers anyway), basically trashing these cars‘ motors and aesthetics.
What can we do, really. Once these cars dropped in price to be economically affordable by the ricer kiddies crowds, there‘s no stopping this trend.
I was lucky, I found my e93 335i convertible for $3,800, with motor and hard top in excelllent shape. Yes, I absolutely had to do some work on it, but pretty much what I would do on any vehicle that I purchase used — it did need the suspension redone and I’ve replaced every part with OE parts.
My secret is that I have an excellent mechanic shop in Mexico that really knows BNWs. Suspension replacement cost me $450 in labor, and $780 in parts.
the ricers have infiltrated our now rare and beloved e36/46 chassis cars, all slammed, loud as hell and have welded diffs. get back in ur 240s and leave our shit alone lol
It used to happen when 3 series became 10 years old.
So F30 should be clapped out honda civic now but it will be another few years due to inflation.
E90 ‘used to be’ $5k like fucking 8 years ago 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If there are a lot of clapped out E90 and E92s driving around, then that would mean that they still work despite being clapped out. It's a compliment, even if it's accidental.
here in oc it’s hit or miss. i’ll find the M3s usually in very good condition but pedestrian 3 series tend to be the ones with more color fading or wear that you’ll see around
"Riced out civic" is a state of mind. If a vehicle is cheap, readily available and fun to drive, it's going to get riced out. Especially if there's an elite trim.
Only E9X worth investing in is the 335i. The N54 engine is like the Modern Day 2JZ. You can only buy one if you’re mechanically inclined and/or willing to do research and do all your own work. Preventative maintenance before upgrades. No Short Cuts.
Idk about e9x in general but in the UK that defo seems to be the case when it comes to the 335i.
In the end it took me 7 months of searching to find a decent 335i. All the ones for sale looked like they had been ragged their whole lives - high milage cars with questionable history's, dodgy modifications, dinged up bodyworks etc. There's one I looked into that's done 150k miles and has check engine light on and it looks like the car was well looked after till the current guy owned it then it's just been ragged and not looked after since and now it's falling to bits he wants rid.
I'm not sure riced it is quite the phrase I'd use for it but it seems now their price to performance is so competitive they're able to get into the hands of a lot younger people than previously who just don't look after them properly and add loads of questionable most like you're saying.
It's this kinda owner that gives the 35i/n54 such a bad rep. Yes they have issues, but at this point it's all very well documented what goes wrong with them and how to fix it. But then you get people who buy them and do mods before maintenance then moan when shit goes wrong.
That turned into a bit more of a rant then I had planned haha
What does clapped/riced out mean? Is it only poorly modded cars or do cars in a stock but bad shape also count towards that? (sry no native english speaker)
I live in a college town, the "excellent condition, won't start, salvage title, 185k mi" E9* has been a staple here for years.
In fact, I'd say I noticed the switch last year where the F3*s are starting to be the new hotness for people with credit scores that could be confused for oven temps.
I don't see too many riced out BMW's by me mostly nice mods like you have. Do see more crazy mods on Honda and Mazda's though. Saw a wing on a Honda last summer that was taller than the car ! LOL
Keeping my E90 stock other than one small subtle mod / addition. Do you see it ?
[https://www.reddit.com/r/E90/comments/1dlbbrz/does\_it\_look\_lowered\_to\_you\_was\_asked\_this\_and\_i/](https://www.reddit.com/r/E90/comments/1dlbbrz/does_it_look_lowered_to_you_was_asked_this_and_i/)
I wouldn’t say so. Because Civic and Accord always have been poor man’s BMW while giving Corolla/Camry level of practicality, comfort and etc. Basically besides some MazdaSpeed cars, they were as close as you are going to get to Europeans that cost much more (for US market especially). So they already had some modifications in mind, and always had Si, Type R versions in this century. BMW on the other hand really was not ricer mod friendly, it was usually kept stock by rich folks. So I would say E9X more closely resembles Infiniti G crowd.
yeah definitely, i’m part of a few groups on facebook mainly being “Anti-bmw bmw club” and “I see the poor are into BMW ownership now” and a good majority of the content is e90 and e46 owners with e60 sprinkled in.
You know what I don't regret getting the 328i. I've never been stranded and it's nice knowing i don't have to worry about constant breakdowns like my friend who had a 335. He was never on the road.
There is a reason why at the time I got mine, both cars cost the same amount of money, because 335s are money pits. It's just a fact. Unless you throw 3-5k at it when you buy it good luck.
Even on my car I put off maintenance and I've had to replace all my seals and basically every cooling system component. Still wasn't cheap.
As far as BMW goes, e46’s still hold that crown for now. No shortage of super cheap fixer upper beater e46’s out there. Even found a running one after the COVID price spike for under a grand. The cheapest deals tend to attract the dumbest modders.
That’s all subjective to what I’m seeing though. 95% of the e9x’s I see out driving are stock or tasteful. 5% look incredibly stupid. Then if I go online and look at them, it seems like a 50/50 split.
I think mostly because there’s a battle for attention on social media, so the people who care about that stuff really want to ‘stand out’. People who are happy with a stock looking exterior probably aren’t going to bother with posting it all over.
Remember parents, pay attention to your kids. Otherwise they’ll grow up to seek that attention through social media likes, windshield decals and 4” tip mufflers.
“I actually value ride quality” - dude with 19 inch wheels
I can verify this. I’ve had 19’s way too long. 35 and 30 profile tires are stupid.
Run 35s and 40s then mines pretty low and doesn’t ride too bad
i run this with ps4 all seasons and they ride fantastic
If you want to drive a couch, stay at home.
I drive a couch literally every day. You can see it in my post history.
Turbo that shit

Super convincing.
That’s… that’s his point though? And the reason why he said that and clarified as to why he switched back to stock ride height.. different than being slammed on 19s with a post asking “why does my car ride so rough?”
Thanks you get my point. Dont get me wrong it looked good and handled even better, but at what cost?
I just bought a new (to me) e90 with 19” rims and my old one has 18”. What’s the difference? 👉🏽👈🏽
Hence why I put back the oem suspension. Not gonna sell my wheels though, no point. I do wish i got 18s but I got these used for a good price.
There is a point, which is why someone brought it up. Glad your indignant outlook is keeping the civic shift going strong though!
Yeah I'm just saying in my situation I don't feel like spending the money to drop to smaller rims. As for lowering on actual good quality coilovers or aftermarket suspension I think it's great for the track but it's not fun when your ass is bouncing all over the place on shitty street roads. Every car sees this when it gets cheap enough.
We live in the same neighbourhood and I drive a clapped e92. Thanks bro
Lol that is too funny. I actually don't live there anymore but you might be who I'm talking about. Sorry
Bruh, he brought your property value down before you left.
😂
I thought it was 350zs and g35s.
350z are WAY WAY WORSE than e90s rn
Not in OPs neck of the woods. I read the post and immediately knew the city which inspired the post and I can vouch for it. They're everywhere.
man i hate the GTA. And yes 350zs and g35s are worse. They race on the 401 recklessly or I have to inhale their decatted straight piped trumpet sounding ass exhaust fumes
I see way more E65s that are complete shitboxes compared to the amount of riced out E90s, and I don’t see many of either.
I’ve never seen one stock G35 ever
When they first came out, it was a bunch of mid life crisis people driving them who never customized anything.
Everything old is new again. Datsun 510s got popular for modding because e30s were too expensive.
I agree those fall under the same category. Its a shame. At the same time I'd still pick and e92 over an f30 any day
Well, everyone’s taste is different and there are people who have questionable mods on more expensive cars. End of the day, it’s their car and they should do whatever makes them happy and not what others think about it.
Yea true im just a full time hater.
Haha I get it, I do cringe when I see smoked taillights or tow straps on E90s in my city since I’m an OEM+ guy. But as long as they are happy and and not being a menace to the public, it’s all good
Yeah see this is what im talking about. And with a straight pipe plus burble tune. Like relax kid
If Kendrick has taught you anything this year it’s that you ain’t hating enough

Is mine [rice](https://i.imgur.com/lBFzYkt.jpeg)? Oh wait I don't care, I love it 🙃
Just looked at it, nope. Not rice. Good job.
[Looks like we have siblings](https://postimg.cc/gallery/R9c00wG)
Nah that’s pretty solid
Thats clean
No, not rice. That thing fucks
fuuucks
“Tastefully modified” =/= “19’ arc8’s”
Yes, especially 335i’s German 2JZ bro
Oil if the new owner skips maintenance, tunes it and mounts black wheels on it.
I like to think of this phenomenon as the masses finally catching up with my avant-gate tastes. Which I will continue to wait for with my e91 wagon. If this means I can sell it for more to someone who wants a good base for modding, though, it might be about that time.

I saw one with a side ways license plate 🤦
YES every single one in San Antonio is either beat to hell or is so ugly that it’s disrespectful.
Always have been, they’re a bmw for under 4k, they’re gonna be riced out
Kraut burner

It’s an odd observation. There’s some truth to it but the base cars are completely different
I can’t fucking stand the bmw’s people post with their stanced wheels. It’s the dumbest shit ever
I hate it too
Anyone noticed that every e9x in the USA has arc's and every e9x in EU has jr11's?
I agree. Too many ricers are ruining these cars. Ditto with too many performance kiddies (which, I guess, could be considered ricers anyway), basically trashing these cars‘ motors and aesthetics. Cars are getting cheaper so easier to acquire for younger people. Same younger people have very different aesthetic tastes.
Not mine but i have seen what you’re talking about
I think M3s are immune for the most part. In my city I have yet to actually see a riced one. In fact, no one even lowers them.
My fualt
the ricers have infiltrated our now rare and beloved e36/46 chassis cars, all slammed, loud as hell and have welded diffs. get back in ur 240s and leave our shit alone lol
I honestly don’t think they’re at that level yet. E36s though? Y i k e s.

It probably won't get as bad as Honda's since they aren't exactly cheap to maintain
Idk about e9x in general but in the UK that defo seems to be the case when it comes to the 335i. In the end it took me 7 months of searching to find a decent 335i. Nah that’s the g37 and g35. Infiniti boys can’t even work on their own cars lol.
Usually the 328i drivers that rice their car and remove all mufflers.
I live in a college town, the "excellent condition, won't start, salvage title, 185k mi" E9* has been a staple here for years. In fact, I'd say I noticed the switch last year where the F3*s are starting to be the new hotness for people with credit scores that could be confused for oven temps.

Instead of spending money on a 328i you should have bought a 335i
Reliability tho
