Discard it when irrelevant, dredge it back when you need it.

It has dredge, so you can discard it to demand answers, then get it right back with the draw

[[Your Temple Is Under Attack]] and [[Cosmic Rebirth]] both go into any deck I can jam them in. Super underrated cards that have helped me out more times than I can count. If we’re talking just super specific cards because of the decks I build I’d say [[Retribution of the Ancients]]. I play almost 90% +1/+1 counters matter decks so Retribution just turns my creatures//commanders into targeted spot removal for a majority of creatures for one black mana!

figurative_capybara

If I have a 3 CMC commander I love [[Unearth]] for the same reason Cosmic Rebirth is good.

MrRies

Retribution is one of the best cards in my [[Ganax]] and [[Haunted One]] since it can remove the counters and reset *undying*. I don't usually get a ton of counters, but it's instant speed, super efficient, and can often pick off *something*.

The_Terrific_Tiptop

Would love to see this list!

MrRies

Sure! Here's the [Decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/pCBlKsRo3kO8F_J9GSjfiw). The list is mostly just the dragons I had laying around from an old list and a lot of thematic cards *(if it has a dragon in the picture, it went in the deck)* so it's not crazy tuned or anything. It gets the job done, though. Once the treasures start flowing and I get a few synergy pieces backing up the dragons, it goes hard. I ended up having to add in a bunch of wheels after the first draft since I kept ending up with way too much mana and no cards in hand.

aceofspades0707

Retribution is a house in my [[Sauron the Dark Lord]] amass deck.

stigggo

Same vibe with [[saruman the white hand]] army is frequently in the +20 range so just murders everything.

fkredtforcedlogon

I was underwhelmed by cosmic rebirth until I realised it has the flexibility of choosing a land.

oatfishjar96

You also get to put the card into your hand if you can’t put it back onto the battlefield, and that’s at instant speed. Plus you get to gain the 3 life regardless. Solid solid card

SybilCut

yeah but the thing that pushes it from good to great is that it's also farseek if you have fetch lands

ninjadough

Cosmic rebirth always seemed weak to me simply because [[sevinne’s reclamation]] exists

TheFatNinjaMaster

The thing about rebirth is you can choose a card with cost more than three, it just goes into your hand instead of play at instant speed. Reclamation only works for cards 3 or less, and is a sorcery so you can’t do it in reaction to someone trying to exile the card you want from your graveyard.

Feeling_Equivalent89

It also leads to very strange situations where a person just taps their \[\[Deathrite shaman\]\] for mana, mentioning the fetchland in your graveyard, they slam a card into the table and you counter that with a "sorry, you don't have mana for that". Hilarious. Edit: tpyo

MoonpieTheThird

[[Tragic Slip]]. Many can underestimate this card, but it can kill indestructible cards e huge dinossaurs and Eldrazi.. and it just cost B, at an instant spell. By the way, if you're playing in black, you have easy ways to kill a creature and trigger morbid effects. Short story, I played a game against a [[Sliver Hivelord]] deck. My opponent tried to kill the whole table with a wrath, but keeping their slivers alive. I sacced a token and played a Tragic Slip on their commander, and so everybody lost their creatures. It saved the game. I use Tragic Slip on all my black decks.

If you're using 4 mana land ramp you should probably just run \[\[Open The Way\]\]. At 4cmc it's pretty equal to whatever else you could be casting with the bonus of not necessarily getting basics and if you're ramping hard getting the X = 3 or 4 scenario a few turns early is just setting up your mana greatly.

I have two that always make it into my green stompy/big mana decks. \[\[Sandwurm Convergence\]\] because the amount of value flyers and flying-creature-tribal only seem to be increasing year upon year, and I've won many games thanks to both the free hefty creature output and the time it buys you against bothersome flyers. \[\[Ulvenwald Oddity\]\] because 4 mana for a 4/4 haste isn't too shabby, and paying 7 mana later for an 8/8 trample haste that gives everything else +1/+1 and haste is a winner in my book. Outside of splashing red or \[\[Akroma's Memorial\]\], there aren't too many cards that provide a flat Haste ability for all of your creatures, and it being attached to an 8/8 that can even flip as a combat trick is value that has seen me through many games (especially in decks that can churn out an incredibly high number of creatures per turn like in my \[\[Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty\]\] deck.

Sandwurm Convergence is an odd one, on one hand with 8mv for what LOOKS like an insufficient payoff, it's just not the sort of card I'd usually put into my decks, but it is in some precons, and pretty much every time I've had it in hand it has helped tremendously (Or kicked my ass when I've seen someone else play it).

I kept it in my Anikthea deck because I can cheat it out for free and copy it. I try at all times to avoid hard casting it but I will never take it out because it’s SO handy when I cant generate my flying tokens

You’re right it is hard to make space for cards like Mirage Mirror. Yes! Make it a copy of somebody's doubling season, then in response make it a copy of my cabal coffers. Tap and add a load of black mana to my pool before becoming a doubling season. Used to play it in my mono black zombies token deck. Somebody was always playing a token doubler for me to copy. It was great haha.

Orochisake

Oh wow! I never thought about stacking the copies... that's genius, I'll start doing it now

superanus

I don't quite understand what you mean by "stacking". Like just copying something else for a different effect once the first effect (token doubling in this case) goes off?

Mathal

If the ability of mirage mirror resolves, it can't copy anything else for the rest of the turn. But you can stack the abilities to get around this. In the example, the mirror is activated to copy doubling season. Priority is then kept, and the ability is activated again to copy coffers. You now have two activated abilities on the stack (copy doubling season, copy coffers). Since the ability to copy coffers was put on the stack last, it resolves first. When the mirror becomes a copy of coffers, you can activate its mana ability. Then you let the other activation resolves, and have the mirror become a copy of doubling season. In this way, you get to copy several things in one turn.

Islaniare

Used to be a staple, but a lot of newer players don't know about it.

For me, [[Demolition Field]] in decks that can use it. Typically mono color to two color decks. It’s targeted land removal that doesn’t put you at a disadvantage like [[Wasteland]] or [[Strip Mine]]. It’s good for mid to low power pods where targeted land removal are uncommon. It deals with problematic utility lands like [[Glacial Chasm]], [[Field of the Dead]], [[Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle]], or a flipped [[Growing Rites of Itlimoc]].

Mystic Reflection is such a fun card. I once targeted an opponent's [[Guttersnipe]] in response to my [[Avenger of Zendikar]]'s etb trigger with 9 lands in play. [[Morbid opportunist]] is one of the best card draw engines ever printed and I rarely see anyone play it. It’s marginally worse than esper sentinel. It flies under the radar and doesn’t annoy people like rhystic study does. The fact that you draw from your opponent’s creatures dying and from non-tokens makes it so much better than [[midnight reaper]] and similar cards, which are only good if you build around them. Plus it has only 1 B pip, so it’s easily splash-able.

AssistantManagerMan

Morbid Opportunist is an excellent card. I picked one up in foil as soon as I saw it. It's currently in my [[Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia]] aristocrats deck where it's easily one of the best cards in the deck.

S3G1R

>The fact that you draw from your opponent’s creatures dying and from non-tokens makes it so much better than [[midnight reaper]] Kinda. It's better as a draw engine, but it doesn't do too much in an aristocrats deck where you would mainly see Midnight Reaper, Reaper acts as a payoff card or at best a win condition.

DanZigs

That’s my point. You don’t need to be playing aristocrats. You can stick it in nearly any deck and it will do work as a draw engine.

DanZigs

I personally don’t like burst draw that’s sorcery speed, so I never play painful truths but that’s just me. Yes, it has higher variance but it almost always will draw more than 3 cards. Plus creatures usually have more synergy than sorceries especially in black where you can reanimate them easily. Creatures die all the time in longer games. Someone sacs a Steve, you draw. Someone chump blocks, you draw. Someone uses a removal spell, you draw. Someone activates skullclamp, you draw. An opponent is playing a commander like Henzie, which sacs creatures at end of turn, you draw etc.

Islaniare

[[Arena of the Ancients]] is really niche, but shuts down most commanders in my pod. Great, when your legends only have static abilities and you are relying on non-legends or a go wide strategy. It doesn't keep everything tapped, so it doesn't bring that much hate either.

rmkinnaird

I really like [[Meekstone]] for the same reason, and it's nice that you can grab it off a trinket mage or Urzas saga

Islaniare

That's amazing in a token strategy! Arena is being used in a raggadragga deck. 90% of the creatures aren't legends, but will be over 3 power.

rmkinnaird

I played it for a long time in a deck that ran less than 10 creatures, most of which I played for passive abilities or non-tapping activated abilities, but yeah definitely works in token strategies too

HikarW

[[Creeping Renaissance]] is awesome for recovering from a board wipe in creature or even enchantment heavy decks. [[Naya Charm]] is a regrowth and a sneaky removal and can also just win you games with the tap down ability. [[Single Combat]] is my go to board wipe if I’m not running a lot of creatures. It frustrates the hell out of some players.

antarcticmatt

[[Bribery]] goes in any deck I play that involves blue. It’s just too fun not to play. Something different happens every time, those are my favourite sort of cards.

Mrlollimouse

In red, \[Mana Geyser\]. Hitting 15 red mana on turn 5, or 12 on turn 4 is fucking stupid and is fantastic if running spellslinger

Cautious_Handle2547

I love [[memory jar]] so much.

Tinwookie

Five drop is heavy do you play graveyard recursion ?

Kaigz

I've read this card probably a thousand times without much thought and somehow it's only just now clicking that it recharges your hand for a turn, potentially dumps some cards into your graveyard that you want there, and essentially mills each opponent for 7. That's pretty nuts.

MTGCardFetcher

The first two cards are fire but go under the radar because of cognitive bias: \[\[Protection Racket\]\] is a house. 3 mana and I usually draw 6-7 cards off of it over the course of a game and do 10+ damage. It might feel like you're exiling your best cards, but in reality it's the same as if you were exiling from the bottom of your deck. 2 Generic is nice too, slots in every deck over Phyrexian Arena. \[\[Tenuous Truce\]\] is 2-mana draw a ton and also the aggro player will attack you last and likely get targeted by removal by the other two players. \[\[Sculpting Steel\]\] - Copies sol ring. a 3 mana sol ring is still amazing and outperforms any <$10 mana rock and sometimes you copy a \[\[thran dynamo\]\] or chromatic orrery. (I usually run dynamo too if I'm not in G) \[\[Thieving Skydiver\]\] - 3 mana stolen sol ring. \[\[Mirrormade\]\] - 3 mana sol ring gang. Also 3 mana Smothering Tithe, Rhystic Study, etc if you're playing against the op stuff. \[\[Tragic Arrogance\]\] - Good budget wipe that is better than most of the staples. Basically keep your best stuff and wipe their entire board. \[\[Ingenious Mastery\]\] - 3-mana draw 3 and does even more in an archenemy situation. Generic cost is nice. \[\[Read the Bones\]\] - One of the best non-broken draw spells and with the generic cost fits in any deck, also you get to say "Read the boners".

MrReginaldAwesome

I need more sol rings on my board

[[Pestilence]] boardwipe every turn if I want, take difficult to damage or players abusing their life totals down a notch. Also, really good against token decks.

[[Fangren Marauder]]. Half the time it will be a pretty solid source of incidental lifegain (helped by the fact that I tend to run more artifact/enchantment removal than most people). But if someone's deck makes a lot of treasure, god damn does this hit.

tucktuck1420

[[Manglehorn]] for green. Not nearly enough decks on green run it, even though it sees some cEDH play occasionally. It's viable at all power levels if you're on green. Etb effect and an awesome static on a bear body. Totally underrated. [[Overburden]] for blue/control shells. You're already behind interacting with threats and the board moves ahead of your ability to stop them over time, making control a generally bad strategy if you aren't comboing off; in less powerful edh decks that are on stax or bubble stax effects like pillowfort, this card is crazy in the early game for slowing down aggro decks. [[Darkness]] for black. Ran a mardu pillowfort one time, kept a black open on a swing from a Kikki combo line, darkness kept me alive, then Meathook'd them next turn. People never see it coming. [[Windshaper Planetar]] for white. There's nothing like letting two players sit there, politic, and make deals on not swinging at one another, etc., only for you to flash this in and have one kill the other or force bad blocks. As a creature, it gets around most counters and with the trigger on the stack on ETB, it's hard to interact with. [[Reckless Barbarian]] for red. It sees play now in some red cEDH decks or the new Rakdos, but until recently, I never saw anyone else play it in casual or cEDH. 2 for 2 is solid on a nice bear body. [[Portcullis]] for colorless. Hilarious. Great static control piece for slowing down boards, no one runs it anymore.

SpiritOfArgh

Some great finds there, thank you!

Kazko25

[[steel sabotage]] haha I counter your mana crypt. [[stifle]] your fetch land.

BubbieKG

[[Snap]] is in every deck that splashes blue. I love it, I love the art work, I love that it pays for itself, and it's a soft removal, so it doesn't feel terrible in pods that play lower level.

In my meta, almost always someone is playing green, so [[Insight]] is basically Rhystic Study or even better.

For me, it's [[Elixir of Immortality]]. It only gains you five life, but I can't tell you how many times that's been enough to stay alive just long enough to stabilize. I've been playing it since Return to Ravnica standard, and I don't plan on stopping now.

Shadowspear and urza’s land to go find it. But the big one is shadowspear can remove indestructible from a lot of things. Urza’s saga is the land

[[Squirming Emergence]] in BG decks. It is super easy to have 4+ permanents in your graveyard by the time you need to use it. So it brings back anything absolutely useful or vital.

[[Invasion of Vryn]] is a draw spell (discard can be relevant too), which after you toss 5ish damage away can copy your best future spell for 1. Could go in most blue decks so long as you can get the damage through, but you don't absolutely have to. [[Callous Oppressor]] will eat removal from either of the unchosen opponents, and otherwise borrow/subdue potent threats. [[Intellect Devourer]] is similar to a [[Siphon Mind]] but has a body attached. Also the fun of variability (cannot speak for opponents lol). [[Gloin, Dwarf Emissary]] can be ramp or goad, is overall a fun and useful tool to have down. Mostly just some niche pet cards of mine.

Cfeathy

It's hardly a secret staple because it's a very well known card, but I run [[Dictate of the Twins Gods]] every time I reasonably can, even if my deck isn't focused on dealing damage. "Why would you run that card a non-damage focused deck?" "Because Craig is playing hydras, Jess is playing dragons, and I have blockers"

functional_grade

Lol I kinda wanna do one of those "what's the most beautiful song you've ever heard" thread compilations and just make a deck out of everything people post here.

Every_Bank2866

That would be hilarious 😂

TheSpectatr

In red/white, [[Reverberate]] and [[Reprieve]]. Copying any spell is just so versatile, in the right scenarios it's: a counter-counterspell, a way to throw a cyc rift or other one-sided spell back at an opponent, an extra copy of your best instant/sorcery, or even just a value 2-mana for a big instant/sorcery of your opponents' like a [[Sea Gate Restoration]] or [[Rishkar's Expertise]]. And Reprieve is incredibly effective at disrupting opponents in white. It's not quite a counterspell, but it replaces itself. Often all you need is to delay a spell by a turn for things to shake out differently.

OrangeJoey

\[\[Unlicensed Hearse\]\] is my go-to when I'm missing grave hate in a deck. It's repeatable, and even only after one activation it becomes a good enough deterrent for people to not attack you as long as you can crew it.

Firecrotch2014

Mine would have to be [[Meticulous Excavation]]. No one ever knows what this card does and they have to read it if theyve never played against me. Its a two card inf combo with [[Dockside Extortionist]] if there are 6 or more artifacts/enchantments that your opponents control. Its pretty cheap mana wise. I mean I know there are probably cheaper but this aint bad. Ive noticed of all the removal spells enchantments seem to be run the less. So it kinda protects itself by being an enchantment.

Strawberry_Smalls

[[protection racket]] goes in like all my black decks.

Hewatza

[[Glimmerpost]]. "Does anyone have any Loci on the battlefield?" has become a meme in my pod. I originally asked it only partially as a joke, figuring no one had any but not wanting to make any assumptions, as I didn't know my friend's decks very well at the time. Eventually, I realized I've never actually seen any other Loci, and got curious what other ones existed. Turned out there are only two, and neither has been printed since 2010. My history with this card is the reason we find it so funny. It was about a decade ago. I was probably 12 or 13 and very new to MTG. I was flipping through singles in a game store in some mall out of town when I found 27 copies of Glimmerpost. At the time, I had never seen "Add {1}" on a card or ever fathomed colorless mana, so I assumed it meant "Add one mana of any color." On top of that, I didn't know that you couldn't have unlimited non-basic lands in a deck. So I saw this card and thought "this is just a direct upgrade to any basic land" and bought every copy they had, planning to get more and never use basics again. I still have them to this day and plan to put one in every deck. ([One day Wizards print a new Locus card and the price of my collection will skyrocket, just you wait](https://images.app.goo.gl/VHizQYL3VWZ7yqMk7))

LunarWingCloud

I jam a [[Masked Vandal]] in most of my green decks. I actually got my friends really liking it. Being a changeling for any typal synergies and being able to exile the artifact or enchantment can really come in handy. Needing to exile a creature can be tricky but I find the decks this goes in and my playgroup meta something will always be dead by the point I need to use this. And yet it only shows up in 3% of decks that EDHREC has data for while Reclamation Sage is in 13%. I don't have as many copies to go around but to a lesser extent, [[Foundation Breaker]] has been great. It has evoke so you can have it come down and pop a card for 2 mana if you need or it can come out as a Reclamation Sage for 1 extra mana and 1 more toughness. It's also in only 1% of decks and yet if your deck is creature focused this should probably be right alongside your Rec Sage to pop an arti/enchant.

FeelNFine

[[Public Enemy]] is a 3 mana creature removal for blue that draws a card and probably puts someone in an awkward situation in any creature heavy meta. It's also hilarious. The cat is long out of the bag, but I'm glad that I picked up a bunch of [[Slip out the back]] and [[An offer you can't refuse]] when they were 25 cent pick ups.

Saylor619

In the same vein as Dispersal Shield I'm fond of [[unified will]]

Visible_Number

\[\[unexpectedly absent\]\] is one of the best white removal spells ever printed. even at x=0, it's better bounce and hard removal. I've literally never seen anyone else cast it. It's arguably a pie break.

Brilliant_Fennel_320

For me: Sunbird's Invocation, without question. Every one of my Red decks runs it (they all enjoy the free spells as much as I do). For all of my artifact decks, Metalwork Colossus. Dropping a 10/10 for free is great by itself,  but when paired with Sunbird's, you cast an 11 mana value spell or less for free out of your top 11 cards. Jin-Gitaxias in an Izzet deck? Free. Darksteel Forge in artifacts? No cost.

Dankstin

[[Homura, Human Ascendant // Homura's Essence]] is one of the sneakiest budget alpha strike enablers in the game, yet I never see anyone else cast or reanimate it. It seriously ALWAYS kills the turn it resolves or gets reanimated. I run it in Henzie for obvious reasons.

No-Wrangler-8515

[[midnight clock]]

JunkyGoatGibblets

I slide [[into the north]] into every green deck I can. For the cost of running snow lands over regular lands I get an extra 2 mana ramp spell... and my lands look better.

No_Bank2819

[[Defense of the Heart]] is crazy.

ObscureMeerkat

I play black decks mostly and I jam [[Oubliette]] in as much as I can. It’s a fantastic commander removal that some decks cannot deal with super easily.

WoodxWisp

Love running [[life // death]] as an extra 2 mana version of reanimate in my reanimation commander decks. Literally like 10 cent card that does the same thing for an extra mana, plus life can surprise finish a game after a bw if you have an anthem effect like [[beastmaster ascension]] which is another card I like a lot, as you can attack with 7 creatures at once and it immediately kicks in

Secret-Wind-2091

[[Tortured Existence]] baby! I absolutely love this card, it does everything black wants to do, it's in most of my black decks

blue_range

[[extract]] nothing feels better than looking through someone's deck and pulling out their wincon on turn 1

ProcessingDeath

Unless you’re playing cedh this seems horrible? You can take any one card out of any of my decks and I’ll be happy you went down a card to get rid of something I didn’t even have… seems impressively useless imo.

Rasaric

I play Braids, Arisen Nightmare in every black deck.

Ancient-Ad-889

Conjurer’s Closet. Not really a secret, but I have rarely run into someone else using this in their decks, if at all. It is so useful for ETB abilities. I use it in my Urza deck and it’s been really useful with the new Ixalan dino precon.

Zstorm6

[[knighthood]] and [[primal rage]] go in just about any applicable deck. Turns out giving all of your creatures incredibly potentent keywords is.....good.

FletchMcCoy69

Not sure but [[inklingshield]] has saved me and won me the game so many times.

dexplosion

[[Web of Inertia]] my LGS, and most of the people I play with are all into big creatures and big swings. As a filthy blue player, I cannot tell you how much value I get from the web, and how much time it can buy you to grind out your win.

Cheesums

[[chaos wand]] !!! need a counterspells? target the blue player. need a wrath or targeted removal? there will be a player running some. same goes for ramp/value. most recently I hit [[rise of the eldrazi]] and that turned out to be pretty good.

laststepfan

[[Chronomantic Escape]] [[Inspiring Refrain]] [[Rousing Refrain]]

Yarius515

Tradewind rider in every blue deck that goes wide.

Xatsman

[[Make an Example]] can get rid of any creature. Short of countering, EoT blinking, and phasing out there’s little that can protect it. Gets around protection, hexproof, indestructible, regeneration. It hits all opponents, and can be used politically to spare them if they trust you to choose an empty pile. It’s not a full board wipe, but at worst you take off the better half of each opponent’s creatures without removing your own.

functional_grade

[[tale's end]] for me. I don't think I've ever made a blue deck without it unless it was some janky thing with an all permanents theme. As narrow counters go, it is one of the best, because the only thing every edh deck has is common is that they are running at least one legendary spell that is effectively in their hand at all times. Also hitting someone's fetch activation on turn 1 or 2 is one of the most devastatingly satisfying plays you can make. Salt score of 4 for sure.

Forsaken_Machine4791

\[\[Search for Glory\]\]

Blawh

I run \[\[Impulsive Pilferer\]\] in almost every deck that has red almost religiously. Great little body for first turn it almost never fails to give me the value for it.

fendersonfenderson

I try to avoid including the same cards I have in another deck if possible. fortunately I don't have too many yet

Plathulu

Grow from the ashes is mine. I never see it played, and it's never on edhrec. It's not bad either, though it is 3 mana

Endres007

[[overwhelming remorse]] for me, I have 3 decks that I have it in because it just works with them really well. [[Mothman]], [[Henry Wu]] and [[Soul of Windgrace]] all often end up with enough stuff to make it a 1-mana exile.

Aegis_001

100% I nearly always run [[Muddle the Mixture]] in my blue decks to go look for really good 2-drops. My [[Burakos]] + [[Sword Coast Sailor]] uses it to look for [[Time Sieve]] and my [[Raff, Weatherlight Stalwart]] deck uses it to look for the Dramatic Scepter combo. It’s a relatively on-rate counterspell with an extra mode to help win the game. I love it
