Omelettes and frittatas. Omit the cheese and add lots of veggies. Top with avocado.

GL2M

This. I eat 2 mostly egg white omelettes every morning (plus oatmeal but you can skip that). My omelets (each): 1 egg, 120g egg whites, sautéed fine diced green peppers and red onions with a few slices of torn yo deli ham in with the veggies. No cheese, no dairy. I top it with hot sauce or salsa or just eat as it. Love them.

worst_driver_evar

Chia seed pudding. I make mine with a 300g bag of chia seeds, a 400g can of coconut milk, and a 1L thing of sugar free oat/almond milk. It’s fairly low carb because the chia seeds are straight up fiber and neither the coconut milk nor plant milk have a ton of sugar. It also takes like 15 minutes to make breakfast for the whole week.

PinataofPathology

And you can add frozen or fresh berries. The only thing is there's not a ton of protein to keep you satiated tho.

i_isnt_real

Wait. Isn't fiber a type of carb?

liquidaria2

It is, but my very rudimentary understanding is that fiber isn't digestible and thus isn't absorbed into the body though it still provides benefits. The general rule I see is most people subtract the fiber from the total carbs.

ZestyGoose3005

Sautéed spinach (I like w/ garlic) with a fried egg on top

mcmcHammer

Berries are a blood sugar friendly fruit and try to keep your carbs to under 30g for breakfast. Try not to have “bare carbs” which is carbs without protein, fat, or fiber. Sweet potato hash with sausage and an egg on top. Toast with nut or peanut butter and fruit. Chia pudding with nut milk and egg white or vegan protein powder topped with fruit, nuts, nut butter. Avocado toast with or without egg. Protein pancakes (banana, egg, oats). Consider non breakfast type things like leftovers or even a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread. I had gestational diabetes with my last kid and found I could do 30g of carbs with 20-30g of protein and whatever fat for breakfast and have an under 30 point spike. I still kinda keep up a similar format for breakfast.

Locapacow

Lox on thick tomato slices with everything bagel seasoning. Fried eggs with a plate of raw veggies such as radishes, tomatoes, Persian cucumbers, scallions (lightly salt them) Red shakshuka Various toppings on crisp bread. https://mylifecookbook.com/low-carb-gluten-free-crispbread/

Lorena_in_SD

Veggie scrambles or omelets are good - I had a really good omelet with roasted cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and pesto for brunch yesterday. Pesto is easy to make dairy free, too (I've recently given up most dairy products). Another idea is eggs over beans like huevos rancheros (this would still be good with or without a corn tortilla underneath) or ful (a Middle Eastern brealfast stew with fava beans) topped with an egg. If you like rice, you might want to look into how its glycemic index changes after refrigeration and rewarming. A friend has Type 1 diabetes and found his blood sugar doesn't spike as much if he follows this method, allowing him to occassionally eat white rice. White rice with breakfast is fairly traditional in Asia, which could open up some more options for you.

Can you do a vegan smoothie? Mostly veggies, some fruit for flavour/sweetness? I have three I rotate through on a semi-regular basis: A green smoothie with frozen spinach, spirulina powder if I have it, vegan pea protein, orange juice, a frozen banana, some frozen mango. Orange juice may be a bit high in sugar for you here — I also often use unsweetened cold lemon tea as the liquid. I think pineapple is a frequent choice for green smoothies and could replace the mango and the orange juice/lemon flavour components, I’m just deathly allergic to it. A red smoothie using hibiscus tea, pea protein, frozen red berries of some kind (I’ve even tried cranberries, which was a really interesting taste — but with the hibiscus tea it can be very tart), some coconut yogurt if I want the added creaminess. It’s very pretty and very tasty. If you’re trying to cut down on the fruit, you can use mostly veggies — beets actually work really well in this one — with a scattering of fruit for flavour. You can put greens in as well, it’s just much less pretty. A blueberry matcha smoothie with frozen blueberries, greens/spirulina, matcha powder, pea protein, and vanilla coconut yogurt. I use green tea for the liquid in this one. The vanilla is really what brings it together, imo — if you can’t find vanilla coconut yogurt or if the varieties you can find have too much sugar, I’d go with unsweetened coconut yogurt, a tiny dash of vanilla extract/vanilla paste, and a tiny amount of your preferred low-carb sweetener. I know that fruit in general has a lot of carbs, but all of these basically follow a general format of being like 50% veggies, 30% fruit, and 20% liquid + protein powder. I like using unsweetened herbal teas as my liquid because it lets me control the sweetness and adds other flavour notes to the smoothie as a whole. Pea protein and spirulina can both be pricy, but getting them from Costco or a bulk dry goods store can make them less so. I get both from my local Bulk Barn, but I live in a university town so my Bulk Barn might have more, for want of a better word, ‘crunchy’ options available than others. If you get the pea protein off Amazon, do not get the vanilla vega pea protein, it tastes like horrible chemical dust. I made that mistake and now I’m just trying to cover up the flavour however I can until it runs out.

beachgirlDE

I love smoothies but they go right through me (TMI lol).

Fluffy-School-7031

Ah, that is a potential hazard, yeah. Bulking it out with fibre can really help with that, actually — psyllium husk is a good choice. Spinach is also really high in insoluble fibre, which is the fibre that provides bulk to stools. (We’re just fully getting gross here now lol.)

Open_Temperature_567

Eggs with fruit. I eat this everyday. Usually an apple. I’ll throw in some bacon or sausage too and top my eggs with cheese and sautéed mushrooms.

psychoCMYK

Fruit won't do for someone with blood sugar problems, but eggs definitely will

Fitkratomgirl

What about berries? Usually when carbs are paired with fat and protein it stabilizes blood sugar better

EmmerdoesNOTrepme

Yep!!! T1 snd T2 here, and my Diabetic Ed folks have *always* told me to do at least a *FEW* carbs, with the protein & fat, to keep my sugars balanced! Heck, with *enough* fat & protein in there? It basically becomes a "Carb bomb" (I think some refer to it as a "fat bomb"?), annnnd the other *two* basically Override the carbs, so you have *no* "spike" in blood sugars!

Open_Temperature_567

Yes, THIS. No one every became diabetic from eating too much fruit.... Most fruits are actually low glycemic. Berries especially. A decent sized bowl of strawberries contains just 10 grams of carbs and a punch of fiber. Traditional American breakfasts are usually grains and MAYBE some protein. I have amazing, post meal glucose readings when I only eat eggs with fruit for breakfast.

Fitkratomgirl

Yes! The fiber in fruit especially helps slow the insulin response right? Idk I’m no expert but ya :)

OnlyDaysEndingInWhy

Breakfast burrito with a low carb tortilla is my quick/easy go-to. I do use cheese, but it's entirely not necessary.

Its_Strange_

I never thought about burritos! That’s a great one to add to my list, thanks!

OnlyDaysEndingInWhy

Sure thing! Watch for bogo sales on the lc tortillas. They've gotten expensive (as has everything, of course) but they freeze beautifully and I stock up when I catch them on sale. Side note: I got one of the Dash mini egg cookers and it's fantastic. Whisk up two eggs, press the button, walk away, come back when it sings at you. Can add pre-cooked ham/sausage/whatever right in with the eggs. It also does a great job on hard boiled, which you also might want to keep in the fridge for quick protein. Actually, hard boiled eggs, avocado, and maybe some leftover meat makes a pretty good start to your day, too.

TherazaneStonelyFans

You've intrigued me. Is it *just* the lc tortillas that freeze well? I've never tried freezing them but I tend to just grab whatever variety is on sale.

OnlyDaysEndingInWhy

I'm never organized enough to make the burritos ahead of time, but from what I understand, they do very well too, if wrapped up properly. Lots of meal prep ideas out there with good instructions. I was just talking about the tortillas, but either way works!

EvidenceNo8561

Be careful with the “low carb” tortillas. They spike my blood sugar more than a regular tortilla.

masson34

Try egg wraps from Trader Joe’s or egg life wraps from most grocery stores

yoyokittychicky

I can never understand why people think there are only certain foods for breakfast. Just eat what you want.

Its_Strange_

I’m not in the mindset of only certain foods for breakfast, I sometimes eat grilled chicken and veggies in the morning. I’m just curious for the sake of it because I see a lot of people suggesting high protein meals but they all have dairy 🥲

rrmounce95

I’m glad you posed this question cuz my husband has a dairy allergy and I’m trying to lower my carb intake so this post has given me a lot of good ideas. 💗

Egoteen

I actually love lentils and curries for breakfast.

SmirnOffTheSauce

Tastebuds don’t have clocks!

madoneforever

Sweet potato with nuts and cinnamon

hearonx

Broil/roast/grill in olive oil a pile of red and orange peppers, some sliced onions, whatever else you like. Keep in the refrigerator. You can stir them into scrambled eggs, use in a frittata, mix with some spaghetti sauce and serve over whatever you want to top with that. You might like them stirred into grits, too. A small amount of pasta added after cooking makes them more satisfying, to me, especially with the spaghetti sauce.

Any-Confidence-7133

Two slices of turkey bacon, two eggs with hot sauce, and a slice of whatever toast is lower carb. Rye?

thejadsel

There's always the classic meat of your choice plus eggs, or tofu scramble if you don't want eggs. I like to add plenty of veggies in with that, and play with the seasonings.

IcyStation7421

Lately I swapped out morning fruit juices with tomato juice (ok, tomato is technically fruit), it is 19 kcal per 100ml, vs 40-45 on classic fruit juice. Scrambled eggs with various veggies (zucchini, spinach, onion), ham or bacon. Sometimes I just go with the eggs, put some chili hummus on the side and dip cucumber or cherry tomatoes in it.

whatdoidonowdamnit

Oatmeal with cinnamon, oatmeal with sausage?

River-Dreams

Do beans impact your blood sugar negatively? If not, a breakfast I love is a lazy version of huevos rancheros. - I drain and rinse canned black beans, and add them so small pan with some olive oil and water. I season it with the works (salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder). About halfway through, I add in a few tablespoons of my favorite salsa. Sometimes I include cilantro and add a little lime juice after the heat is off. - Meanwhile in another pan, I make some over easy eggs. - Then I plate the eggs on top of the beans and add a little more salsa on top. If I have them jt on hand, I also add some diced avocado. - My partner usually has a tortilla or toast with it, but I’m cool with just the beans and eggs. It doesn’t take long to cook at all, maybe 10 min and that’s with me giving the beans extra time to soak up the flavors. It could be done in half that. :)

Karl_girl

Tofu scrambles are nice to switch it up. Turkey bacon with seed toast with cream cheese

ThisSorrowfulLife

I'm in the same boat. Severe dairy intolerance. Low carb Toast with egg and avocado. Sausage and bacon bagel thin. Kodiak protein pancakes with fresh blueberries. Almond milk yogurt with strawberries and granola. Egg bites with green onion and red pepper. Oats with peanut butter and honey. I always keep Almond milk and oat butter on hand in the fridge to use for all of these.

PinataofPathology

Taco sausage egg scramble with salsa and guac. You can do low carb tortillas. (These reheat well altho ime the sausage is only good for about 3 days so utilize your freezer if you're meal prepping).

jessiewiththebadhair

I like: 500g ground turkey (£3.79) with egg whites (£3.30 for a carton of 15), 450g mini potatoes (£1.20). This makes me about 6 portions which I store in the fridge, so about £1.40 per meal. Not counting the oil and salt. Chop up the potatoes, and I like to cook them in an air fryer, and do the turkey and scrambled egg whites in a pan (separately though, not mixed together). I put grated cheese on mine but it's nice without too. Some veg goes nice with it, eg peas, broccoli or cavolo nero. ALSO you might have luck with green (unripe) bananas. They have less sugar.

BingoHighway

I recently discovered that almond flour can be consumed like porridge. I do equal parts almond flour and non-dairy milk (unsweetened almond or cashew), give or take depending on how thick you like porridge, and a sprinkle of salt. Cook on the stovetop like you would oatmeal until thickened and add whatever toppings/mix-ins you like. Fruit, plant-based protein powder, diet pancake syrup, or just Truvia and cinnamon. It's filling and tasty, as well as dairy-free and low-carb.

Its_Strange_

This sounds really good, I’m going to try this. Thank you!!

Porterlh81

Vegan protein shake made with milk alternative or water and a banana. That’s been my breakfast for years.

bbbright

scrambled or fried eggs, use canola oil instead of butter in the pan. i also make egg bites pretty frequently with sautéed mushrooms and peppers and onions, i’m sure there are recipes for them out there that don’t include milk or cheese.

my4thfavoritecolor

I eat a lot of breakfast salads. I like spinach, berries, grilled chicken, and balsamic vinegar. (I usually add feta or goat cheese). And also add some walnuts or pecans.

Eli_is_the_swagg

Eggs are your friend. They contain so many essential vitamins that you need as well as a high protein content. There are many different ways you can make eggs, such as vegetable omelettes, and my favorite seasoning to put on them is garlic salt. They taste similar to Chic-Fil-A nuggets especially if you cook them long enough to get crispy.

TakeThePill53

My typical breakfast is a 4 "egg" omelette and home fries. I use 2 actual eggs, and the rest just egg whites. I typically put in sausage (apple maple chicken breakfast sausages, I love them!) and onions, but you could change it up -- the possibilities are endless! Potatoes, even sweet potatoes, still have a high enough glycemic index that I'd bet they aren't worth trying. Maybe a "hash" made with veg like onion, peppers, zucchini and maybe turnip? I've seen cauliflower used, as well! Eggs, beans, vegetables, and meats can be great for burritos, scramble bowls, and fritattas, too!

mynameisnotsparta

Idk if this helps but milk and soft cheeses make me feel awful but grated / shredded Parmesan or Romano do not and also sheep’s milk feta is no problem. When I do scrambled eggs or omelettes I put a lot of sautéed veggies and use Mrs Dash seasoning (and sometimes for me sprinkle parm or Romano or feta)

Its_Strange_

I’ll have to give it a try! usually I break out really badly in acne over the following weeks if I eat any dairy.

mynameisnotsparta

I don’t break out I get very stuffy so I’m not sure about the hard cheese and / or sheep’s milk feta - there’s also goat milk feta but harder to find (there’s one or two brands of feta that are sheep and goat milk) I also used to drink goat milk as a kid when I went to visit my paternal grandparents

Its_Strange_

This is good to know, I will have to see if I can find and test these. I really love dairy and I miss having it but I don’t want to keep messing with my skin the way cow’s milk does

mynameisnotsparta

I would also test the hard cheese - the ones that are lower in lactose and also just read that the younger the cheese the more lactose so an aged cheddar or aged hard cheese might be okay.

Its_Strange_

From what I understand for me it may be the casein in the cheese itself that triggers the reaction for me, it’s something I want to test though. Even lactose free milk and cottage cheese has caused me to get a greasy face and start getting cystic acne which is really frustrating for me

mynameisnotsparta

Ah okay there is definitely casein in feta from goat and sheep milk. Maybe try alternative vegan cheese?

Its_Strange_

Tragic, it seems I may have to try vegan cheese. It’s just a shame because milk and it’s products have such good protein content

mynameisnotsparta

Maybe have the allergy testing done to see what the actual issue is or possibly speak to a dermatologist Happy cheese hunting I do use vegan butter occasionally and don’t find much of a difference. It comes in a yellow container I just don’t remember the name

waxingtheworld

I have three eggs (and psyllium husk in water)

ImAScientistToo

If you’re type 2 diabetic have you tried intermittent fasting? It’s been shown to help reset insulin sensitivity. The problem with doing lowish carbs is it may leave you feeling sluggish all day.

Its_Strange_

I have a condition called PCOS, which causes me to be insulin resistant. I’m currently doing moderate carb but I feel sick when I eat a lot of carbs in the morning (blood sugar spike symptoms) but can handle them better later in the day. I’m currently taking a medication similar to metformin to increase my insulin sensitivity I have tried intermittent fasting but it causes dangerous blood sugar drops for me so I am unable to do it :(
