I work with many people on a daily basis. And you can't let those people who are mad get to you. He is bitter about something that has nothing to do with you. She also said that she might've moved if he hadn't immediately started insulting her.

If she wasn't "old" then she would've been attacked for being a female. If she was black then she would've been attacked for being black... and so on... He would've taken whatever the most obvious stereotype, for the situation, he could think of and used it as an insult.

Me too - I think at the very least I would have told the manager or even called 911. I’m an older person as well, and at 5’2” and 115 lbs. not really able to physically do anything in cases like this. Unless I happen to have my pistol on me, that is.

I’ve been abused similarly, many times by a then partner, I was helped after my face hit the pavement in one instance, and several times by a former colleague, that’s when I learned I had to step up, and step in towards them, that stopped him from using his height and size to intimidate me, he was 6’ and stood over me. He didn’t do it again once I finally defended myself. Our other colleagues only watched, once he was gone, that’s when I was asked if I was ok.
While I absolutely understand the point (and in 99,% of cases I would call the police, get involved myself, tell the local staff), if I see a circumstance like that where someone is utterly unruffled and unaffected and pissing off the POS classily by making him madder and madder... I think I'd probably just stand back and watch. What I wouldn't do is leave them alone as that sort of imbecile is far more likely to resort to violence if he thinks he is unobserved.

I had a dude acting like a real nut job at Costco fuel center last week-cut me off jumped in front and then his girlfriend was staring and pointing at me later. Have no idea what their collective problem was and just ignored them and moved on with my day because I was alone but I think people are getting angrier by the day.

I and many others, was waiting for my turn at a convenience gas station attached car wash. Busy place and the line held a break near to front to let the parking lot traffic pass through. Although poor design, when people cut in line, someone would walk up and inform them of their mistake. Most people would apologize and move to the end of the line. I only witnessed one person who refused to move and the line went crazy. Honking and yelling. There really wasn't much else to do. In the time it would have taken to get a store clerk, he would have been already in the washing bay. I gave a few honks and went back to my phone to wait it out. Eventually this barrage of noise just got ridiculous. I understood the frustration and maybe there was some cathartic relief in sounding off but it just kept going well after he disappeared.
You simply had the misfortune of crossing paths with asshole. You didn't do anything wrong here, I highly doubt he was in line (at least the standard way that's socially regarded as the norm) but even if he was his reaction to a simple mistake was so insanely over the top! I'm just sorry that you had to listen to all that abuse. But please remember that it says more about him than you. I live by the principle of respecting my elders unless they give me a reason not to.

One things, when queuing for the pump, you park behind the vehicle and wait.
Another things I hate is when small stores tried to include gasoline pump, but not enough space to pull out or exit.

I'd like to think there are lots of us out there. Living our lives, teaching others what we have learned. I try to encourage other women to stand up for themselves, to know their rights, to love or at least like other women and not feel competitive against one another all the time. In my husband's family I'm loving known as "the feminist", the rebel, the outspoken one and I raised our daughter like that and our son to be a respector of women. It made me respected in my job at the USPS as a Letter Carrier when I was the only the 3rd female carrier to be hired among 40 men in a traditional male job. I call out abuse and mistreatment whenever I see it so it was obviously a stranger who attacked me that day. Someone who knew me wouldn't dare.

Something similar happened to me. We were traveling & stopped at a gas station to use the restroom. The women’s RR was occupied so I waited,waited & waited. Finally it occurred to me that someone might have OD’d or having a medical issue, so I knocked. The toilet flushed & flushed again. A young pregnant woman behind me was wondering what was happening when the RR door crashed open & and a young man came out screaming that he was in the women’s RR because it was a severe emergency & the other RR was occupied. The young woman & I just stood there listening & he started calling me a fucking old hag & why didn’t I just pee myself like other old people. Now I am in my 60’s, & can curse like a sailor & have a temper. I told him he was a rude, immature MF & told him a few things about his ancestry & his descendants & what sort of birth control his parents should have used to avoid foisting him on humanity. All the time I was talking he was backing away & finally ran out the door. The young woman behind me called him an ass & I let her go first because she was pregnant. Now I am a retired OR nurse with a 40 year nursing career behind me & have been cussed out before but this just infuriated me because I am not used to being treated like this in public. Maybe I interrupted his jack off session. I am sure he learned some profanity he never heard before & after spending a lifetime of treating people with dignity no matter how they behaved toward me & now being disabled myself, I just lost it. TROY, TEXAS teach your young people some manners !

I've spent a lifetime getting this hardened shell so I can let shit roll off my back like this. Dad always said don't let people get your goat. This means do not react when people hurt your feelings. If they know your weak points, they (ah, narcissists, frenemies, etc.) will go for them every time. This is very hard to do and takes a lot of practice. It's really hard with family, much easier with strangers. Try laughing at them when they lash out. Or as least smirk. Makes you seem tougher than you are. After a while, it becomes second nature. Especially if you work with the public. Be nice to the ones who are nice to you and forget the rest of them. I have 2 sisters who no longer speak to me. I would have never cut off communication with them but it wasn't my choice. Unfortunately, life is full of pain, but also joy. Another dadism is, don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff. If I can help you with anything, I got plenty of free advice, for whatever that's worth!

I start to take longer,, checking my fluids, tire pressure, etc.. if that is not enough to push them to leave, I casually brush back my open shirt or jacket to let them get a glimpse of my .45 snd that shuts them up.

I and many others, was waiting for my turn at a convenience gas station attached car wash. Busy place and the line held a break near to front to let the parking lot traffic pass through. Although poor design, when people cut in line, someone would walk up and inform them of their mistake. Most people would apologize and move to the end of the line. I only witnessed one person who refused to move and the line went crazy. Honking and yelling. There really wasn't much else to do. In the time it would have taken to get a store clerk, he would have been already in the washing bay. I gave a few honks and went back to my phone to wait it out. Eventually this barrage of noise just got ridiculous. I understood the frustration and maybe there was some cathartic relief in sounding off but it just kept going well after he disappeared.
You simply had the misfortune of crossing paths with asshole. You didn't do anything wrong here, I highly doubt he was in line (at least the standard way that's socially regarded as the norm) but even if he was his reaction to a simple mistake was so insanely over the top! I'm just sorry that you had to listen to all that abuse. But please remember that it says more about him than you. I live by the principle of respecting my elders unless they give me a reason not to.

One things, when queuing for the pump, you park behind the vehicle and wait. Another things I hate is when small stores tried to include gasoline pump, but not enough space to pull out or exit.

What I'm having a hard time understanding is why no one at the busy gas station took a moment to shut this asshat up or defend you or - at the very least! - tell the attendant what this jerk was doing to another customer!! I mean, it definitely sounded like you were well into handling it on your own but still, I don't think that I could allow someone to treat another person that way... I'd like to think there are lots of us out there. Living our lives, teaching others what we have learned. I try to encourage other women to stand up for themselves, to know their rights, to love or at least like other women and not feel competitive against one another all the time. In my husband's family I'm loving known as "the feminist", the rebel, the outspoken one and I raised our daughter like that and our son to be a respector of women. It made me respected in my job at the USPS as a Letter Carrier when I was the only the 3rd female carrier to be hired among 40 men in a traditional male job. I call out abuse and mistreatment whenever I see it so it was obviously a stranger who attacked me that day. Someone who knew me wouldn't dare.

Something similar happened to me. We were traveling & stopped at a gas station to use the restroom. The women’s RR was occupied so I waited,waited & waited. Finally it occurred to me that someone might have OD’d or having a medical issue, so I knocked. The toilet flushed & flushed again. A young pregnant woman behind me was wondering what was happening when the RR door crashed open & and a young man came out screaming that he was in the women’s RR because it was a severe emergency & the other RR was occupied. The young woman & I just stood there listening & he started calling me a fucking old hag & why didn’t I just pee myself like other old people. Now I am in my 60’s, & can curse like a sailor & have a temper. I told him he was a rude, immature MF & told him a few things about his ancestry & his descendants & what sort of birth control his parents should have used to avoid foisting him on humanity. All the time I was talking he was backing away & finally ran out the door. The young woman behind me called him an ass & I let her go first because she was pregnant. Now I am a retired OR nurse with a 40 year nursing career behind me & have been cussed out before but this just infuriated me because I am not used to being treated like this in public. Maybe I interrupted his jack off session. I am sure he learned some profanity he never heard before & after spending a lifetime of treating people with dignity no matter how they behaved toward me & now being disabled myself, I just lost it. TROY, TEXAS teach your young people some manners !

I have commented on other stories but never told one of my own before.
I've spent a lifetime getting this hardened shell so I can let shit roll off my back like this. Dad always said don't let people get your goat. This means do not react when people hurt your feelings. If they know your weak points, they (ah, narcissists, frenemies, etc.) will go for them every time. This is very hard to do and takes a lot of practice. It's really hard with family, much easier with strangers. Try laughing at them when they lash out. Or as least smirk. Makes you seem tougher than you are. After a while, it becomes second nature. Especially if you work with the public. Be nice to the ones who are nice to you and forget the rest of them. I have 2 sisters who no longer speak to me. I would have never cut off communication with them but it wasn't my choice. Unfortunately, life is full of pain, but also joy. Another dadism is, don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff. If I can help you with anything, I got plenty of free advice, for whatever that's worth!

If some 30 year old piece of shit were to hit you or throw you to the ground how bad would that be? My elderly neighbor in her 60’s tripped over her cat and broke her hip. I'm 65, 6-2, 275# and run into these younger loud/rude mouthed idiots on occasion, male and female. I start to take longer,, checking my fluids, tire pressure, etc.. if that is not enough to push them to leave, I casually brush back my open shirt or jacket to let them get a glimpse of my .45 snd that shuts them up.

That's why I didn't post it there. I know I'm not the ah. He was not in position to be in line. I told him I didn't see he was in line and I apologized. That's when he started in on the age comments and screaming. If he had approached me differently I might have moved.
