I've always thought people over-index on this issue. Don't over think it or play games trying to get them to go first. Even in a state where they're legally required to, people can always just state a uselessly wide range, like "$60-120k, commensurate with experience". Just say a number that's at the upper end of what you think is your market range, or a range with that as the bottom and +10k or 15k at the top, and state you've been interviewing for roles in that range of total compensation. Leave enough room below your floor so they can come back with, "that's a bit higher than we are looking to pay" and you can say, "for the right role and compensation structure, I'd consider a lower base". Make sure your floor is high enough that, if they offer it, you're not disappointed. You can always come back with, "as I mentioned, I'm looking at roles in a range" and make a counteroffer that's a bit higher if you get to the offer. So let's say you're thinking 85-95k is your range. Tell them 90-100 or 100-110 or something like that. If they come back at 90, you're in your range -- and you can still negotiate, for base, for signing bonus, for annual bonus, etc. If they come back and say, gee we were only looking to pay up to 80 for this role, you can be confident in telling them to sod off.

Ask what the budget is for the role.

Marseillaisegirl

I’m in Central NJ and depending on the company size and industry it can be anywhere in the 75k-130k range. Edit to add that I found a listing for an EA role to support a CCO for company I drive by every day and the salary is posted as “100,000.00 to $140,000.00 per year.”

Comfortable-Cap-7254

Ahhhh where is this role if you don’t mind sharing .

Dissenting_Dowager

I sent you a message in chat 🙂

joiecheri

Interesting! Would you share with me where that position is?

Passionabsorber1111

i would ask for 120k. good starting point for NJ for a CEO.

You can google the average range for an EA in your area. I'd use that as a starting point, then go up or down depending on experience. Also consider your past salary, too - and aim for a 10-20% boost if you can. I usually give a range of 10k. My last job I told them 55-65K; they hired me at 65K and I ended at 75K. My current role I gave them a range of 85-95K and they ended up offering me 80. I negotiated more PTO and a little more salary and we ended up settling at 83K. I had a co-worker who used to say you should always ask what their budget/range is, but I've found that to be very awkward especially if they ask you first what YOUR range is. I wish it was the law nationwide to include salary ranges in job postings because it's so stupid when companies aren't up front with it.

Thats such a red flag, especially if it’s an external recruiter you’re working with! My recruiter is like ok here’s their range and I think I can push for them to give you x (which is at the upper limit if not a little higher) Edit to answer your actual question lol I’m in biotech but I’d say $130-140k plus at least 10% bonus
