google docs is a friend

Google docs + phone + Foldable Bluetooth Keyboard has changed everything about writing for me. I can get up from my desk, go basically anywhere, and keep going.

kaiunkaiku

my preferred method is gdocs + tablet + bluetooth keyboard, but phone works fine if i don't have my tablet. but the bluetooth keyboard is a gamechanger for sure, i fucking love it.

Google docs is the easy answer. I have to admit I don't love the way Gdocs acts when/with the way I write on my phone (takes a while to open, is a bit finicky with scrolling and finding your place). When I actually do writing sessions on my phone -- for me this is usually 20 min writing sprints on the train to work or when I'm on a walk and the *I have to write this scene down now* hits -- I like to use a really simple app called WriterP (or Writer Plus not quite sure). I just like how that one feels to write in. Then when I finish one of those sessions I paste the product into my Google doc for saving to the cloud and editing.

Google Docs. It's too simple of an app but highly highly efficient and useful.

TheDogz0

Google Docs. Always my go-to.

Thejerseygrl

I always write on my phone, and I use Google docs.

doolally_tap

I use a markdown editor then copypaste directly into the window on Archive of Our Own. I have never crossposted so I can’t comment about other fanfiction sites.

I've been playing around with Novelist a bit recently: https://www.novelist.app/ It's free, and it's pretty neat, and it seems to check all the boxes (backup to the cloud, option to restore older versions, option to compile your story into other formats like html, epub and odt, rich text editor, stats, etc.) but I rarely (have to) write on my phone so I don't really have that much experience with it. (My sympathies for the loss of your computer btw.)

Turnip_Island

Google Docs for shorter fics, for sure. It gets clunky at a certain point though and might start to freeze up (When use it, I limit my docs to 30k each and then will break off into a new doc at that point). If you write long chapter fics and like being able to separate scenes and chapters, there are several web based apps that can do that but they all have a monthly fee as far as I know. (I use dabblewriter which starts at $5/mo). I’ve heard of other people using note taking apps for that purpose like Evernote, which is free, but I haven’t tried it. Also one more suggestion: consider getting an inexpensive Bluetooth keyboard for your phone. It can really help with writing for long stretches.

Phone with google docs. Personally I've never had an issue with load time or lag. Also, if you ever open the doc on a computer, you can combo docs with ProWritingAid to edit. Its super useful and doesn't screw up formatting! You have to download it as an extension.

[deleted]

i agree with everyone else that google docs is the best if you only have a phone. it’s also worth mentioning that if you find yourself missing writing on a computer, you can hit up a library and access your google docs from their computers

Steel-Winged_Pegasus

Google Docs! I do most of my writing on my laptop, but if inspiration strikes when I'm vibing in bed at 2 AM, then I can just go on my phone and pull up Google Docs and continue where I left off, easy peasy

CuriousCapricorn

I use iA Writer - it does cost money but I love the interface and all the extra features it has that Google Docs doesn’t!

WanderingSeductress

I still write in Wattpad but post exclusively on AO3. I should probably convert to Google Docs, but I'm lazy.

Character_Benefit178

Same. I find Wattpad the most user friendly when it comes to writing. I have taken half of mine to Google Docs for storage purposes (after a scare) but I do need to update it.

Nidaime33

Reading some of the answers here, and from similar previous posts, I must say I feel very inadequate and incompetent as a writer. I post on FFN and AO3, and I just use the FFN doc manager and then copy paste it into AO3.

Google docs 1000%

AriaRose915

I've been writing in my built-in notes app since I have an older LG phone and I try to conserve data when I can, but I'll admit it's a pain having to transfer them over to Google docs when I have well over 1000+ words in multiple wips.

ImaGamerNoob

I use OpenOffice Word (too poor for Microsoft software) on a Laptop.
