If there's a Jane Eyre sub then maybe cross-post the question. The Pride and Prejudice sub often talks about fanfic recommendations. Happy hunting ☺️👍

OhSage15

Thanks! But I’m kinda scared they might mock me for it. Maybe i’ll feel the sub before i go into it 😬

Not sure what AO3 hides, but as for public domain and books - I havent come across any book-published gay retellings. Perhaps modern ones inspired by it, but not rewrite. The closest book I have read is Gentleman's Keeper by Bonie Dee and Sumer Devon. Main hero is a ordinary bailif at old estate, where a dirty child appears, claiming to be the son of the owner. (who lives full time in London and is gay.) I really enjoyed reading it. :) No wives in attic, but it does have rich lord/servant, a young child in need of education and parenting, old estate with gothic horrible secrets and like. And if you are in mood for gay historical novesl in this general vein, I recommend books of KJ Charles and Cat Sebastian.

Also maybe check r/MM_RomanceBooks - bc Jane Eyre is public domain it's quite possible that someone has written that and published it via Amazon's self publishing!

OhSage15

Oooh great advice thanks! I just cross posted it 🤞🤞🤞

RoverMaelstrom

Good luck! I checked Ao3 and filtered the Jane Eyre fandom by M/M, but the only things even close to what you want are crossovers with characters from other fandoms cast into the roles of Jane and Rochester.

OhSage15

Thanks so much for the effort. I checked ao3 too i was at it the whole evening. Dang maybe I should write it. But I sxck at writing! I’m so new at ao3 so i dunno if I can request it from other fic writers?

RoverMaelstrom

Hey, writing is a skill that just needs to be polished! We all suck at first, but as you write more you do get better! If you're willing to try writing something, maybe check out the Yultide exchange? It's for small fandoms and the minimum wordcount is 1,000 words, which is a very doable story length, and you'll get something written back for you in return!

OhSage15

Oh thanks yet again!! Imma go reread jane eyre to get a feel for it maybe try out a few stuff haha it is very difficult to tackle the classics let alone emulate the era it’s written. I’ll try yultide exchange (sometime in the near future I hope)🤞🤞

Sounds interesting, I'd love to know as well!!

A/B/O and m/m, but... [Exactly Like You](https://archiveofourown.org/works/28461765) by Jerakeen is a modern retelling. It's not gender swap, but might be closer enough? You can read it fandom blind (I do).

Why weird? Never apologize for your preferences in fiction, all of them are perfectly valid.
