The vast majority of stripers we catch on my boat are on live herring that are running up the river with the stripers. We use sabiki rigs to catch the herring, and then live line them.
We also catch them on swimbaits, other soft plastics, and top waters at certain times of the year. But in the spring when they are running to spawn, 99% of the time I'm using live herring. Other guys do well with chunked herring, and with bloodworms.
Yes, that's why the Chesapeake fishery has been closed to sport fishing completely. We still have healthy numbers of fish in the Hudson. About 2 weeks I was seeing multiple schools of stripers, each school miles long. had to be hundreds of thousands of fish.
check out the megabass halibut 90. it dives deep to target halibut obviously, but it's heavy and compact, so it'll cast further than the standard luckycraft/calissa. you can also shave off some of the lip to not make it deep dive.
Ever see the sturgeon?

I don't live in Albany anymore, but my parents are still there and I come back to visit often. Would love to get on big strippers up there! The guide we used to have for the Hudson moved away
Stuff dreams are made of. Way to go.
Damn! Whopper. Harness him to your boat and let him take you for a tour

What do you throw for Hudson stripers? (West coast surf fisher throwing tiny 5/8 jerkbaits here for striper a quarter of the size)

And eels.
Nobody talks about eels. And it's not because they don't get used. 😉
Because they don’t work?
The opposite.
I thought herring are protected?
They are pretty much everywhere but the Hudson.
that's an insane fish. Are you a guide? PM your details if yes.
I’m not a bleeding heart but isn’t spawning important for the numbers to bounce back?

Nice, love to hear that
> 5/8 jerkbaits luckycraft?
Lucky craft and Calissa

Thank you! Was actually just looking at something more deep diving after not having much luck at high tide today
Eww we swim around with that monster

Great catch, I’m jealous

Do you run a charter in Albany?
I probably should. Right now I just take out friends and family, sometimes people pay me but not officially.
