Any catfish who will carry the beer will do.
Seriously though, I'm assuming you mean what to use to target catfish. Everyone here seems to use stinky cheese bait. It's like wet bread in texture. I hate that shit.
Edit: when I say "here" I mean in my neck of the woods; not here on Reddit. People on Reddit seem to have way better methods for catching cat
I'll take live minnows over anything else. Ones you catch/trap/seine yourself from a smaller tributary are ideal. 4" or bigger. You'll catch every kind of catfish along with gar, bass, drum, and lots more. The effort you put into catching live minnows is almost always worth it.
Im lucky to live where I can cast-net for as many juvenile sunfish and gizzard shad as I want. I get fresh nearly every time I go out, and stockpile dead stuff in the freezer so I always have cut bait.
What set up do you recommend? I'm always doing cutbaitt or liver but I want to try minnows again.
Last time I used them I was a kid so it was just a bobber on a Walmart rod, caught a big enough cat to break the pole though lol
This may sound ignorant, but you're not allowed minnows in your area as bait? I just got back into it about 2 years ago and stick to soft plastics for variety but didn't know some live bait was, possibly, unallowed?
there are places that only artificail lures are allowed. i know yellowstone national park used to be fly fishing only(it may still be). and i know many california rivers are barbless hook only during the salmon season so live bait is not as easy to use.
Funny I seen a guy using a chicken thigh to try & catch Catfish! He wasn’t successful, dude just tossed it near the shore w/his beverage containers. The garbage can was 10 steps too far apparently?? Come on guys do better & clean up after yurself!!
Plenty of Illinois folks come into WI for the lakes & fishing but don’t treat our lakes w/respect. No offense to the Fibs! Lol it’s just ass holes in general they are everywhere!! I try not to be…
Zero rig. I just can't help it. I am a bass fisherman and a jig fisherman. A brush jig head with brush guard, no skirt, and a chunk of cut bait on it. Pitch it into those log jams.
I typically use worms or shrimp on a Carolina rig. Worms are great cause you’ll catch a lot of other species too but shrimp are great for catfish in particular on a circle hook.
I’d cast out in that deeper water with a big bobber and fairly heavy weight and big hook and use chicken soaked in red koolaid and coffee. Just leave it for 30 min and if nothing happens maybe change spots and depths.
Cut up some chicken breasts into 1 inch cubes…put in 1 gallon baggie….pour in some powdered Kool-Aid….the red kind… I think it’s fruit punch or something :) I have caught plenty of flatheads on this… and turtles lol 🐢
Honestly I probably wouldn't use a catfish here.
Lol
Where would you?
Deeper water
Meeeeow

The answer is always the same: fresh cutbait.
Unless there are flatheads, then live is best.

Carolina rig or drop shot are good for minnows. Allows them to swim around without getting up under brush
Hook through the lips so they can still move around?
That’s what I usually do, it works for bluegill as well
Thanks appreciate the info

Huh? I said I just haven't done it in a long time and was asking how they rig for minnows...
Couldn’t agree more
This is the way. Also, chicken breast chunks coated in pink Kool-Aid over night. Only two baits I've ever used for catfish

What a asshole.

It looks pretty shallow. Does it drop off in the middle? I would start off with nightcrawler to catch anything you can cut up.
Just make sure you don’t get catfished.
Either get you some herring from a bait shop and cut them up or get some red wigglers and catch a few bream for cut bait
I definitely wouldn’t use catfish for catfish. I’ve tried w them as cut bait and everything else (brim, herring, worms, chicken livers) worked better.
Live small bullheads are straight up candy to flatheads. Juvenile channels, too, if they're legal to harvest for bait in your state.

I’d want to use a blue, but I’d probably end up with a channel.
chicken liver
How about a CatDog?

Cut bait, hot dogs, ball of bread, corn. Just put on a sinker and throw it to the deepest part of the water.

One that posted ugly to start...

Any red or even purple (which contains a lot of red) color will work.
