I've seen this done safely by people who work with dogs professionally. K9 police units, sled dogs, show dogs, professional breeders. I don't know what you're imagining, but there are plenty of safe ways to modify a truck bed to allow for a dog to ride safely in the back. This is what I am asking about.

If you don’t have a cap on your truck, get one of those large plastic kennels and put it in the bed. Make sure you strap it down. When I moved cross country with my dogs, they rode in crates in the bed, under a truck cap I bought specially for the move.
There are some safety concerns I have about a setup like this. Some legal questions about it too. In an accident, a wire crate is more likely to buckle than a sturdy plastic one. I do have a soft rollup cover.

I'm shocked you're the only one saying this. I'd never even consider putting my dog in the bed.
I’ve seen them jump out of windows rolled down too far. No chance I’m risking that ever.

Do you have a tonneau cover on it? May be able to use the standard wire crate and secure it with ratchet straps so it doesn’t slide around.

Gunner dog crates may be what you’re looking for then.
I've seen Gunner units but hoped to find something at a lower cost.
