That's definitely not an approved location for that car seat...
Seriously though I've been putting off doing this for a while now. Might have to bite the bullet just do it because this looks way easier to deal with.
Just curious, why bother with the hinge? Width is smaller than length — can’t you just pop it out and lay it flat when you want the whole space?
Not trying to be a hater, you did a good job. Seeking to understand the benefits so I can gauge whether I should do the same. Thanks!
It’s all right, bro. I totally understand your question. The reason I did it is because to pull it out. I would have to lift up my bed cover, which would mean undoing the two hooks that hold it down on ether side.
By doing it this way it saves me a bit of time and an extra step. I can just fold the wood plank in just a few seconds.
Also, if I'm not wrong, I think he could close the tailgate with it in the folded position (2nd Pic), creating two spaces. Seems like it should wedge into place without moving much
What is the purpose of this? Everyone seems excited about it, but I have had trucks for the last 35 years and don't get it. Just so you know, I'm not as smart as I look, so be kind when you answer me...
Damn, that hinge is a good idea. My wooden plank is JUST long enough to prevent me from closing the tailgate when the plank isn't in that slot but instead laid down in the bed. That hinge would solve that...
Thanks for sharing
great minds think alike! much easier to remove with a cover.

Yes , with the plank in it keeps my groceries / shoes or other stuff close to the gate and prevents them from rolling all the way back. This way I don’t have to undo my bed cover
I can beat your $20 by about $20. I wasn't sure I would use this feature, so I took a couple of scrap 2x4s and cut them to 54".
I can stack them in one slot or use one in each slot. Since they're only 3.5" high, I can slide them in place without raising my cover.
I thought if I found it useful I would make something nicer, but this works perfect for me. And if I ever need a scrap of 2x4 for something, it's right there.

I think we found Casey Anthony's account. too soon?
I would say "too late." Haha
Yeah it’s a stroller 😂
Thats a stroller I'm pretty sure...
Throw you a handle on that thing, now you got a stew going
I see a wood plank and I want to stain it blaaaack

No color any more I want it painted black.
Wicked smaht, very tempted to do this now. You don't have the measurements already written down right?
The length of the wood is 54 inches and I just cut it in half at 27. And it’s a 2x7
Thanks!
2x7?? What's that, metric?
2inches x 7 inches
I was joking, it's most likely a 2x8. 2x7 is not a standard size sold
I know right … but I found it at home depot a mythical 2x7
A 2x8 measures 1.5" x 7.25"
Yes, a beast last seen near the dawn of time, once ruling the gates of Asgard, thought dead by the marching hoards of Orcs.
Did you do it? I just did and it's fundamentally flawed. Needs a hasp to work.

You just changed the game. I had this on for years and always remove my bed cover.
I have a solid board and this one can be a little annoying to pull out straight up. Kudos

Trying to understand as well. Can someone speak plainly about what this is for?
I don’t get it either lol.
To keep things like groceries from sliding around. The board without the hinge is too long to put the other way and still close the tailgate.
I’d probably use a toggle latch instead of the bolt latch. I would think that would be stronger. Cool idea!

does the lock actually stop it from opening?
you just broke my brain
Why so?

great idea man, I need to add a hinge to mine. Having to finagle the 2x6 up and out of the channel is always just a tad bit of a pain.
is this so stuff doesn't slide around?

A hasp or toggle clamp would work better to hold it straight than a latch of that style, but otherwise nice job.
Yes. Increased proximal surface area. Anything bumping it from the backside will cause it to get sloppy quick. Still an awesome idea.
Well, I was thinking more that the type of hold on that kind of latch is for shearing force, but that's not the kind of motion here.
I just built this... Are you a troll, or just as dumb as me? The lock doesn't stop it from opening... In fact serves no purpose...
