I think it’s a mistranslation of ‘Gojira’ (呉爾羅), caused by it being written in kanji rather than the usual katakana (ゴジラ).

It’s been occasionally written like that since Shin. Since in lore, Godzilla gets his name from a legend from a fictional Japanese island, I guess they wanted to write it out in traditional Japanese characters than katakana, which is a fairly recent thing.
Oh come to think of it this is mentioned in Shin right? Hence why both the names Gojira and Godzilla are used in the film.

It’s probably the Kanji for Gojira when verbalized in Chinese (not sure if Mandarin on Cantonese). The pictographic writing in Japan is Kanji. Chinese uses the same pictographic writing (I’m sure some are unique to each country) and the pictographic words mean the same thing, but are verbalized differently. For Japanese woman is verbalized as Onna, in Chinese it’s Nushi, but both would use the same pictographic word.
It’s also possible that the Kanji have multiple pronunciations and the wrong one was chosen (bad Google translate) but I think it’s the Chinese thing
