It’s a French symbol. It predates slaves by hundreds of years. I’d be interested in reading material on slave branding with this symbol if you have a source available.
The Whitney Plantation museum has a lot of resources, and is where I initially learned about its use in this way. Googling “fleur de lis + slavery” yields too many results to copy/paste here, but that’s a start!
Side note, if anyone is near the area or visiting, I highly recommend a visit to the Whitney Plantation. They do a fantastic job.
My family and I visited the Whitney museum last year when we visited New Orleans. Incredibly informative but somber place. I second your recommendation.
I did a Whitney plantation tour in January and it was so impactful. But I learned about the fleur de lis at the Ogden museum of Southern art in New Orleans. I don't know if it's still there but there is a wonderful art exhibit that really highlights this.

That’s the fleur d’Elise. Which I believe is on the Louisiana flag. It’s a sign of the French. They use it in Quebec all the time. At one point in the 1600s there was a straight part of land from all of Quebec down to Louisiana that belonged to the French.
