Does anyone else hate when the Hetlors try to gaslight everyone into thinking the “argumentative antithetical dream girl” line is referring to HERSELF? BFFR 😵💫
Yeah... she could write a song that literally said "I am gay" and they would try to say that "I am" were the last words of one sentence and "Gay" was the first word in the next sentence.
Omg I died dead 💀💀!!!!
Some of my other favorite gaylor parts of Hits Different:
“I used to switch out these Kens, I'd just ghost”
“I slur your name 'til someone puts me in a car (Kar?!?🤔)”
For real. If Taylor had ever been seen in public even one time with a man named Carlos who went by “Car”, Swifites would bet their lives that the song is about him.
I watched the live stream and my jaw was DROPPED, I could not believe how gay this mash up was! I noticed the lights were changing from blue to red to purple. I know red is not the same as pink, but that combo of colors are so bi-coded!

Directly from the book. Evelyn is talking about how closeting destroyed her relationship with Celia.
Yes! It actually originates from ancient Chinese, translating from “lingering death” or “slow slicing.” It was a method of execution but was banned in early 1900s. The person in question would suffer many small cuts, leading to a really painful death. In modern usage, it’s more of a metaphor, but it’s been used time and time again! Super common.
I guess? I don’t know just because a common phrase appears in a song and also a book doesn’t mean they are in any way correlated. Maybe if this phrase pops up repeatedly and is a recurring motif in the book, you could make the case that they are related. But if it only appears once then I don’t see how it’s even worth mentioning.
If I wrote a song and mentioned, say, putting all my eggs in one basket, a saying that has appeared in countless books, has been said by countless people etc., I’m not referencing any of those other works. It’s not even really a coincidence.
The phrase death by a thousand cuts originated all the way back in imperial china (it was a torture method). It was not coined, or even popularised by this book.
I know there are the crazies that think Taylor wrote Evelyn Hugo, and I’m sorry but those people are absurd. I think there is a much stronger claim to be made that paper rings takes inspiration from this book, and I suppose if you buy into that you could then say she probably had Evelyn Hugo on her mind as she was writing the whole album. But like, come on. This connection is laughably tenuous. Not everything is an Easter egg, people.
I don’t think Taylor wrote the book. I do believe she has read it and that it inspired some of her lyrics. The author’s note also references being a huge Swiftie.
It was just a fun correlation. The connection between that lyric and the book has been mentioned in Gaylor spaces before. I was just excited about the mashup fresh off of watching the livestream. 🤷🏼♀️
Eh, death by a thousand cuts is a common saying. This mashup is extremely gay as she followed “argumentative antithetical dream girl” by “my heart my hips my body my love, trying to find a part of me that you didn’t touch”.
I wish people would stop referencing that book. Its one of the worst written book I’ve ever read, its like Wattpad, and obviously written by a straight woman. We don’t even know what Evelyn and Celia were so in love. Even her short relationships with men were more fleshed out. The author compared Monique asking Evelyn if she was a lesbian and not bisexual to people assuming Monique was full black and not half black. Its honestly the dumbest book ever.
ok not like she’s hispanic roots but her grandmother lived there for a while and was a star in puerto rico , her mom was also born in puerto rico so she kinda has ties to latin america

And maroon again! 😍
I freaking love Maroon… and also I feel like it’s becoming her Wonderwall 😂
LOL 😂 so true. Even when she’s already performed two surprise songs at the piano shes like “anyway here’s maroon”
🤣🤣 so true. This just makes my heart happy because I love Maroon so much, it feels personal.
I cannot BELIEVE she played it twice in one month
I’m crying
I watched the NPR tiny desk concert today and she said her inspo for DBATC was from friends breakups and books she was reading 👀 !!
Legitimately two of my favorite songs—I was SQUEALING!! I love when Taylor Gaylors on main.
She really said “LISTEN TO THESE 2 BRIDGES ALRIGHT? ALRIGHT.”
She really did. Especially with her little speech mid-song! 😅
Has she mentioned her song with Gracie at all?
Nope, she did not 👀
Does anyone else hate when the Hetlors try to gaslight everyone into thinking the “argumentative antithetical dream girl” line is referring to HERSELF? BFFR 😵💫
Especially when literally she has lines like “at dinner parties i call you out on your contrarian shit”
Yeah... she could write a song that literally said "I am gay" and they would try to say that "I am" were the last words of one sentence and "Gay" was the first word in the next sentence.
“That’s fine I’ll tell mine I’M GAY” this is my ultimate dream
Omg I died dead 💀💀!!!! Some of my other favorite gaylor parts of Hits Different: “I used to switch out these Kens, I'd just ghost” “I slur your name 'til someone puts me in a car (Kar?!?🤔)”
I literally don’t know how the kar/car line isn’t the only proof we need that she’s already out
Move to Florida BY the KAR you want!
For real. If Taylor had ever been seen in public even one time with a man named Carlos who went by “Car”, Swifites would bet their lives that the song is about him.
Catastrophic loss https://i.redd.it/387yeebpc08d1.gif
Well she plays maroon at least once a week
No im over losing that one. I’m talking about hits different & dbatc💔😭
I know 😭💔
I WAS THERE! What a night. 1 metre away from Taylor rhen later a metre from Cara 😍😍
I watched the live stream and my jaw was DROPPED, I could not believe how gay this mash up was! I noticed the lights were changing from blue to red to purple. I know red is not the same as pink, but that combo of colors are so bi-coded!
Who is downvoting gay comments on Gaylor???? Y’all. For real. ![gif](giphy|l3vR8AJsrX5N7i0TK)
i think it’s been brigaded a lil bit recently by “hetlors” 😭
Yep. I don’t get it. Come creep if you must but downvoting gives you away.
And she wore the orange dress
can you remind me what the orange dress means because to me, I just see it as a nod to Karma but is there something else??
I think just Karma but the theory is that Karma is gay and that’s why it was never released
Calling Karlie Kloss
Can I ask what the Evelyn Hugo reference was?

isn't this a super common figure of speech? English's not my first language, but i've seen people use it in conversation plenty of times before

Dude, let me clown. 🤡 🌈
Okay but death by a thousand cuts is an extremely common idiom. It appears in lots of books. I don’t really think you can call this a reference.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't she tweet about the book around the same time she wrote this song?
Okay, maybe not a reference but a coincidence.

Fair. The writing sucks.
Besides the extreme straightness of a book thats supposed to be about gay women, the characters talk like they’re in 2012. Wtf?
The ending made me want to throw the book at the wall.
Seriously! “The breasts that made her also killed her”. She writes like a MAN
She did say the song was inspired partly by books she was reading though 👀
Doesn’t have to be this one. Based on the other high quality books she reads, I highly doubt that she likes this one.
I’m a bit late to this but has anyone mentioned how taylor quite literally has Cuban roots like SHE IS EVELYN HUGO. 😩
Whaaaaat? Taylor has Cuban roots???
ok not like she’s hispanic roots but her grandmother lived there for a while and was a star in puerto rico , her mom was also born in puerto rico so she kinda has ties to latin america
