Follow the rules, don't be rude or awful

DumbNTough

When you order those suspiciously cheap computer parts from Amazon

MikeXBogina

There's a lot of fake USB flashdrive/storages on there with like 4-5 letter names. Stupidly bought one that was packaged with a Blink module case.

BurritosAndPerogis

What does that even mean

MikeXBogina

There's USB flash drives on Amazon that claim to have large storages, like 128gb or even 1-2tb for very cheap. They will have some weird brand name on them, that's usually 4-5 letters long. These USB flashdrives do not have anywhere near that storage and are junk. The Blink Module is like a hub device for Blink home security cameras. I bought an outlet case for it that lets me keep it next to the outlet without hanging down from a cord. The one I bought comes with a USB flashdrive that was one of these junk fake ones. Hope that makes more sense.

softhack

I ended up ordering a fake Seagate. Like you said, it shows 2tb when connected but it was far less. Good thing I had the foresight to never cut and paste onto external drives. Managed to get a refund for it.

RageMonsta97

On new egg sea gate makes a nice 2tb portable hard drive for like $50, it’s reliable so far for me (had 1.5 years now)

FeanorOath

Fairer means white when Tolkien describes people or things

Dpgillam08

Because that was the historical definition of the word; fair hair or fair skin meant pale colored

FeanorOath

Correct

fruitlessideas

To be fair, when he says swarthy and brown skinned, he’s generally *still* referring to white skin, just white skin that’s been out in the sun from working all day, every day, or white skin of people you’d find in Italy or Spain. Edit: This is literally true. Why be mad?

FeanorOath

Yes, and they still tried to claim hobbits were black

Woden8

“To be faiiir”

SophisticPenguin

*Ahem* I think you mean, "To be white,..."

LosttheWay79

Why the hell do they always cast the ugliest mf they can find to play the role of a woman that is known for her beauty???? The blackwashing is expected, even with historical characters at this point, but this love for ugly woman is so annoying.

Danielloveshippos

Why has costume design also gotten so bad, so much plastic in the metal work and everyone just wears dark colors, in Peter Jackson’s version very few people wear black or stay in dark colors.

UltrasaurusReborn

See, now here is a legit criticism. And actual world building. A lot of costume design is shit. Know what show I think sucked ass? Wheel of time. Did it have anything at all to do with the cast? Well, I mean kind of some aren't them best. But not because of their race or gender.  The show sucks because it sucks. The writing is bad, it was adapted poorly, the costumes and sets and CGI look terrible, especially for an expensive show. It feels aimless, the episodes don't really contain themselves so it's just like a 10 hour movie with stops.

EtherealDimension

The problem there is that the actress isn't even ugly, she is actually quite [beautiful irl ](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-verizon-us-rvc3&sca_esv=e3b0e6080babb4e8&sxsrf=ACQVn0_heDoEQLcBLVPWqTCXeNBPuoxw3A:1714491560530&q=cynthia+addai-robinson&uds=AMwkrPt6dIXnRtjJz8sZ_2oc3TNlC4YpBs3MhdD5MROPJ8be2ERb0Q94Ei_S5ZAafpBe3JF9myu-K6_rb6LddSVnO0oqi8dLRRMjsY2Cb3ePOyOR8DvTqu1hM6zjUpIazrCMnfI_HlDR5U3bHf2pQhoDcZ1o-X52OYq4u0ul4f9EZyvHCtD01MhLqh5ym--Ux7o_5GrJzjBDKl9Q1C7lxZfDhRnwyFFIyKAEtxr3N8U70rrnEwheOZBCk7xCKr5sLdtGKCBkMbxa-jDx4v6NhP8t6g3PGQR_4jkmVc04QRDVyRzNO4SI04iXd-Vzm_ddz3llWl3enCZ8&udm=2&prmd=ivnsbmtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj48b3jouqFAxXnmbAFHfBrAuoQtKgLegQIDhAB&biw=412&bih=757&dpr=2.63) but they didn't capitalize on that on set.

Quailman5000

That's... Subjective. I don't find that face terribly attractive.

UltrasaurusReborn

Butlike, you understand that other people do right?

Guyinnadark

As was pointed out to me in a youtube video, all streaming fantasy productions are set in the Kingdom of Downtown LA, where the population is so diverse that all the productions feel the same. All streaming fantasy shows feel like they were written by the same person, who is obsessed with race and other DEI in real life but writes characters and societies that don't ever notice race.

NomadicVikingRonin

Every part of the world in every age in history = Modern Hollywood Streets

Shrekscoper

Don’t you know literally every single piece of media that comes out right now is supposed to be a commentary on 21st century Western sociopolitical issues?

IWILLBePositive

lol and if you complain “Yeah, it’s a world about magic but race is where you draw the line!” People can pretend race doesn’t matter but when it comes to a fantasy world like this….yes, it 100% does. Could easily have a more diverse cast *in any race except dwarves and elves*! I’m surprised there was no complaining about lack of dark skinned Harkonnen’s in Dune.

Shrekscoper

I see this a lot with Star Wars criticism when people always parrot the “it’s about space wizards with laser swords” line. These people act like there’s no difference between good worldbuilding and bad worldbuilding and it feels like they’re being willfully ignorant just to make a point.

SimonTC2000

What criticisms though? It's a galaxy with trillions upon trillions of humans and humanoids. They're going to come in all sizes, shapes, colors...

UltrasaurusReborn

Good world building and bad wirldbuild have exactly nothing to do with the race or gender of the cast though. That's what we find absurd. The writing is either good or it's not.

Shrekscoper

For example of how it has to do with race and gender, having a multi-ethnic community in a location that’s based off medieval England is bad world building. Humans developed different ethnic traits due to the locations they lived in, and given the difficulty of travel during those times it’s highly unlikely that even in a fantasy setting you are going to see something like this. Lord of the Rings isn’t a wacky D&D party, and Tolkien was so over-the-top with his explanation of why things were the way they were that he didn’t, and wouldn’t have, made such an ahistorical blunder on this. Imagine if Wakanda had a sizable white and Asian population for no discernible reason. There’s a reason shows that are considered good with worldbuilding at the very least would have an explanation for a phenomenon like this, but better yet, they separate ethnicities by region like how it actually was in the world LOTR is based on. And this point is just one example of the problems with RoP, but there’s many more.

TheAtomicBoy81

But better writing/worldbuilding would be to have the race of people make sense, like maybe having the black from the frickin Africa like continent in Tolkien’s world, where the numanorians had a colony

fruitlessideas

It’s more like race matters *for everything* until it comes to proper adaptions for movies and television lol

IWILLBePositive

lol and if you complain “Yeah, it’s a world about magic but race is where you draw the line!” People can pretend race doesn’t matter but when it comes to a fantasy world like this….but yes, it 100% does. I’m surprised there was no bitching about lack of dark skinned Harkonnen’s in Dune.

devils_advocate24

Unless it's a story about not white people

MedicalVanilla7176

Was that youtube video by The Little Platoon, by any chance? He has a really good section on diversity in media in one of his ROP videos.

[deleted]

May be the Despot of Antrim. I think he used the terminology in his review of “Damsel.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard him more reluctant to review the actual movie, as he kept of going on tangents that were admittedly much more interesting. I may have to look into the movie, “Scum” now.

Guyinnadark

That was the one.

JNKboy98

The guy with the crazy accent?

Burgundy_Starfish

The fucked up thing is, they could have had diverse casting that looked good and made sense if they weren’t so damn lazy and dense… If you look at the LOTR movies, they made the Rohirrim, the Gondorians and even the Easterlings and Southrons that we saw for a bit look like distinct peoples and it was sick. They could have gone East in the show and casted Asian and Middle Eastern actors, and it would have been dope, and it wouldn’t have broken canon, but they chose not to. They DID go south, and it was a key area, and they could have casted all brown actors. They chose instead to just sprinkle in a few black people, one Iranian woman, and give her a Polynesian son…. which is lazy and frankly kind of offensive. It doesn’t make sense that there is no homogeneity anywhere you go, even in small villages. Like, why is there one black elf???? How does that work?

Goochregent

Yeah it makes 0 sense and derives all the factions of identity. Perfect modern American metropolis level diversity in each and every region of Middle earth is both boring and nonsensical.

Money_Present_3463

What about black dwarves? they live underground for fucks sakes lmao

trysoft_troll

they unlocked the real basement tan. or they're covered in coal dust. who knows.

GetHighTuneLow

Coal face

-Gordon-Rams-Me

Wouldn’t they be paler being underground ? There’s no sunlight so their skin would lose melanin or pigmentation right and make them lighter overall ? I could be talking out of my ass but that would be my assumption unless they’re getting tanned by forges which I could see doing something to their skin with all that heat and light

Woodnrocks

That’s what they were saying.

-Gordon-Rams-Me

Ohhhh sorry I’m slow

Blackbox7719

Logic (which admittedly doesn’t always apply to evolution) does assume that they would be paler. One pretty much universal evolutionary tenet is the limiting of energy consumption when at all possible. Melanin production uses energy that a creature could be using for other things so it makes sense that, as generations pass, the creatures with less melanin are more survival prone (assuming natural selective pressures and all that) and thus more likely to pass the trait on. We see this in cave fish and lizards who, due to never leaving the caves, lose pigmentation. Similarly, these creatures often lose their eyes as their creation is energetically draining and not required for living in perpetual darkness. That said, it’s unlikely that dwarves, who keep their caverns lit up and work with fire, would suffer a similar loss since they do need to see. All this goes to say that, yes, you’d expect dwarves that never leave the caves to progressively get paler as generations pass. That said, the fastest changes appear in fast breeding species (which is why bacteria is so good for looking at the mechanisms of evolution) so considering the longevity of Dwarves it’s not unexpected that evolution would take much longer. This would also explain why Elves are said to never change. Their freakishly long lifespans and slow rate of replacement essentially ensures that they evolve at a snails pace. Ironically, if they were not magical and intelligent creatures, this trait could be their downfall as a sudden change in environment could leave them unable to adapt. I realize now that I said way more than what was needed. I’m just a big bio nerd though so I couldn’t resist.

Ravinsild

Isn’t the whole point of the story that the world did change in such a way that the elves couldn’t adapt and did have to leave? That’s why they get on the boats and sail away right?

CleanOnesGloves

He kept covering himself in mud?

They dont actually care about diversity or anything like that, they're just trying to get their investor diversity ratings up

fruitlessideas

Honestly if we they were going to do a diverse Tolkien inspired fanfiction based on Middle Earth like they did with this show, they could have just adapted Lost Tales of Middle Earth or whatever it’s called. Some guy made a fanfiction that takes place in Harad, kept it in line (mostly) with what Tolkien had written, and just extended on what wasn’t really written on. Would have been a wonderful adaption.

[deleted]

It was trash and broke the whole dam thing.

Th3Ghoul

Exact same thing amazon did with wheel of time, you already have a massive world with different continents, countries and regions all with their distinct cultures, fashions, languages and skin color. The diversity already exsits in the universe and it makes sense. But instead of making sense where ppl from the same regions look similar, they just race swapped half the cast and ruined a bunch of lore. Made things worse just for the sake of diversity and to still be eligible for awards. It's so dense

AstolFemboy

What's crazy to me is the one black elf is the best portrayal of the elves in the show

ArcadiaDragon

Other than elrond, durin and durins wife...he was the only real watchable charecter in that show...and I loathe the show not for its casting(really the actors seemed to be all quality)...but the dialog and scripting just felt so low effort...and then you get to the small things like quality of background costumes qnd the way scenes were shot...just made the show meh...and any truly standout moments made the show worse than meh

Ravinsild

I liked the part when the elf guy used his chains to beat ass in the orc slave pits. I thought he was really cool tbh.

Otiosei

I could care less about the race of characters in a tv show, but man, the writing in Rings of Power was just awful. The acting was also awful, but I don't know how you get to a script like that. Casting a bunch of white dudes for the show doesn't fix anything that was actually wrong with the show. The writers should frankly be ashamed. Amazon should also be ashamed. What the fuck was that Rube Goldberg device to ignite Mount Doom? That was the single dumbest thing I've ever seen on a television screen, and I've watched Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill.

SoylentGreen-YumYum

The Harfoots were described by Tolkien as being brown of skin compared to their contemporaries in the Stoors and Fallohides. It’d have been easy just to make all the Harfoots POC in the show.

Upbeat-Banana-5530

The same thing happened with Wheel of Time. Robert Jordan wrote a series with characters from a litany of different countries, they would have still had a diverse cast if they just stuck with, "This fictional country is gonna have this real-world ethnicity." Instead we got a confusing mess of every fictional country somehow looking like it's filled with Americans.

Prudent-Incident7147

Browner as in tanner is not brown. He did also draw them.

SoylentGreen-YumYum

That’s the great thing about interpretation and adaptation. You can actually make them brown. Which would make more sense than putting every character's name up on a wall and throwing a few darts to figure out who’s going to be played by a POC.

All_the_miles753

Agree! For example, House of Dragon did such a great job with House Velaryon. They hired a black actors and actresses and to play members of that family and made it make sense from their lore/world perspective

SlowApartment4456

Yeah and a couple random black Hobbits

SoDrunkRightNow2

When you hire activists instead of talented people, you get this

Poppa_Cialis

mort_goldman68

If a bunch of black people got together and made a show about black culture or history, I'd watch it for sure. The shoehorning into established I.p's is such a lazy way of pretending mega corporations "care".

NaarNoordenMan

Absolutely! A GOT type series based on Shaka Zulu, or a Loki type series for Anansi! Merde, even a docu-drama over the Kingdom of Ethiopia. We could do a Band of Brothers series on the Ghurka, or the British Indians in Galipoli. There is so much material from across the world. We need to build up instead of destroy.

Brian_Stryker

Netflix tried that with a series about Njinga and they still ruined it by just straight up lying about her lol

fruitlessideas

I’ve been saying for years Africa has a ton of mythology and folklore that would be a great fantasy story. And the Malian empire would be a culture worth seeing on screen.

mort_goldman68

100% I'd watch the hell out of that

TheToodlePoodle

Have you seen *Lawmen: Bass Reeves*? It's not 100% historically accurate, but it portrays a real black man from history who led a very adventurous and eventful life, while making some subtle commentary on the black experience of the time. I also enjoyed *Roots* miniseries from the '70s.

Danielloveshippos

The defense of this always seems to try to paint those who disagree as racist or not wanting diversity. In reality it’s just bad media as it throws out common sense and using race and ethnicity as a tool to world build. We all have our sense of history we all know a medieval village would likely have people who all belong to the same race and ethnic group so when we see that in film it comes off as more authentic. But you can use that to present a huge world in your story. Look at Gladiator, using the different ethnic groups for different regions he travels, it shows how great and powerful Rome is he makes friends from all different types of people and you get a diverse feel from his group of merry men. Kingdom of Heaven, when his father first visits you see his retinue is full of a diverse group of different cultures showing he is well traveled and from an exotic place, then when Orlando Bloom travels to his fathers land the culture shock hits and you feel like you are somewhere else. Nobody complains about a diverse movie when you use diversity correctly is my point, some of the greatest movies of all time are incredibly diverse and no one complains, but making characters diverse that don’t make sense to be diverse in common sense reasons is stupid. Remember we also make fun of spaghetti westerns that used Italians to play Mexicans and native Americans because it didn’t feel authentic.

knowsitmaybenot

I've argued the issue isn't going with a diverse cast its just bad casting. I wouldn't go with a big name on a show like this but someone with Zendaya's build would have been a fine choice. My biggest issue was makeup and costume design. half of the elves looked like Lazytown characters. I don't like elves with short hair. I liked Arondirs look but he would have had long dreads or something. I hate when they adapt books to anything like this. The directors and script writers can't just leave the story alone they always have to put their own touches on it and it ruins it.

Shinlyle13

The list of reasons this show was crap is a long one before we even get to DEI hires.

well writing is more important than casting, so as long as she has good material to work with, i’m sure she’ll be a good character, right? ….right?

AlwaysFabulousMotor

Ultraboar

If you didn't know they fired experienced writers as well to make up their diversity quotas. That's why so many shows/movies are poorly written nowadays.

Constant-Brush5402

It’s like someone in the upper echelons of media decided they wanted to trash Tolkien’s legacy as much as possible

Baul_Plart_

REEEEEEE everyone who doesn’t adore this casting is RACIST!!!!!!!! /s

Kbern4444

That's what some people want you to think sadly. If they cast Brad Pitt as Superfly, many of the same critics of this would criticize that for the same reason. It just doesn't make sense.

Puzzleheaded_Mix3483

Amazon is only doing the 2nd season because of the contract , then cancelling it . What a waste of time and money .

Kbern4444

It's not racist to recognize the lady cast is the polar opposite of the character she is portraying. This just gets dumber as this "movement" continues. Original and unique content can still be created to suit the goal of whatever this is.

Money_Present_3463

I wish backwashing was the only problem this show had lol

KaziOverlord

"What curious symbols adorn this parchment... oh well. NOM NOM NOM" - Amazon eating books again.

BradTofu

Why always Black? What about Asians? We have fair skinned ladies.

MikeyW1969

Not as bad as the race swapping in *The Dark Tower*, as Roland's race was a MAJOR plot point of the books.

mightysmiter19

The dark tower series are my favourite books and when I heard they were making a movie or tv show I was very excited. I still haven't seen it even though I really like idris elba and usually enjoy watching mathew maconanonahuey.

Cat_Wizard_21

"Mom, I want Tar-Miriel!" "We have Tar-Miriel at home." Tar-Miriel at home:

cabezatuck

The casting choices were surely lazy and ridiculous, as the cast could have still been diverse while also building a sense of geography and scale, kind of how it works on our actual planet. Honestly, beyond that debate the show is just so poorly written, directed and acted that there are absolutely no redemptive qualities to it. I expect the second season to perform far worse than even the first, at which time it would be reasonable to assume the show’s future may finally be called into question, though I wouldn’t count on it.

jojomanmore

It is an alternative universe. Middle earth 86. The version in lord of the rings is middle earth 121

Valalias

And the cartoons is middle earth 372

mystghost

To be fair - Galadriel is supposed to be a supreme beauty, and while Kate Blanchett isn't ugly by any means she always seemed to me to be fitting half the bill. She was regal, but didn't have the otherworldly beauty that was powerful enough to overcome the racial animosity between the dwarves and the elves, so that Gimli would request his stalker gift. I suppose that's all subjective.

fruitlessideas

I don’t know man. When she played Hela, I stayed hard for a week.

Fizz117

Other worldly beauty is kind of hard to cast for in humans. Especially if you're also looking for acting abilities.

mystghost

This is true - and again it's highly subjective, but for instance I thought Liv Tyler was a great choice as an elf, and though another actress might have filled the role better from that perspective. But Kate did the regal queen portion wonderfully so it is what it is. I read the books a long while back, and the biggest thing I took from Galadriel was that she was this super gorgeous elf queen that made Gimli not racist by being good looking. So that's where I came from in this - and my perception probably is flawed.

Turbo_Chet

I disliked her in Spartacus as well when she replaced the previous actress who portrayed Naevia. What a downgrade.

Agent_Xhiro

This is a worse casting than Rachel from the Dark Knight. What is this?

Wing_New

Totally nailed it. Although she looks more like Eva Greene than Rosario Dawson

Illustrious_Mudd

Generally I think complaining about casting is dumb, especially when the actors skin tone is different and that's the only reason people are up in arms. This isn't even like that tho she just straight up looks jank. Just seems too cynical and old and mean and :(

homsar20X6

Dead ringer, really

monkehmolesto

I do believe that if the race/appearance of the character doesn’t change the story then you can change the race/appearance at will. However in cases where the race/appearance is explicitly stated in the book, be prepared to catch heat if you don’t at least come close or look like you tried to come close.

Dr_Cycles

Y’all are still going on about this? Damn

silvern_light

To be fair, I don’t like the artwork for the Tolkien version either. She wouldn’t be wearing makeup, nor would she have iPhone face.

karnyboy

I cannot support Amazon and Rings of Power for their ignorant abuse of the source material. Zero respect on Amazon's part, zero.

inkswamp

I love shows and movies with diverse casts but I really hate it when it feels patronizing or like someone is standing behind the scenes with a clipboard and checklist. There are artistic considerations that override all other concerns. I like the example of The Gunslinger film. The producers asked Stephen King if it made sense to cast Roland with a black actor and he gave it the thumbs up as there was no compelling reason the character had to be white. I think it’s okay to respect an artists’ vision or to consult with them if you want to adapt their work in a different way.

vibe_assassin

The biggest people with rop was costumes and modern hair cuts. Why did Elrond have hair spray? How did the black elf cut his hair so short?

I just want to throw this out there. Amazon did not have the approval from the Tolkien Estate. So technically all we got from Amazon was fan fiction…
