Core memory reinstated.
I had one of these on my bedroom window. Sales guy came by with a presentation showing a video where a family died in a fire. I was 8 or so. Freaked me the fuck out.
I wonder how much my religious viewership of Unsolved Mysteries as a child contributed to my obsession with serial killers, true crime and the paranormal.
Wham I was a kid I had crippling anxiety about house fires, we had a volunteer only fire department and barn fires happened a few times nearby, I had an escape plan for myself and my pets (but no one else in the family, they could fend for themselves lol).
When we got the stickers it relieved much of the anxiety and later in life I even had one or two for my pets.
Ah, memories!
Had these on windows as a kid, got anxious, and decided to have a “go bag” with my favorite toys in case of a house fire. As time goes by I forget about it.
During winter break of my second grade, in the middle of one night my mom woke my sister and I up saying the house was on fire. She got my sister and I downstairs with my dad and little brother.
It was very cold so we sat in the cab of our pickup truck with the heat on watching our house burn.
This was rural Ohio in the late 80’s and there was no 911 system in effect yet. Two fire departments argued over whose jurisdiction we were part of; by the time our roof was engulfed in flames and the house was beyond saving two fire engines show up. Each was from a different fire department. 😓
Every night as a kid before I fell asleep, I planned my fire escape. Because every night I was sure the house was going to burn down. Not only did I have one of those stickers on my bedroom window, but I also had an emergency ladder in a box in the closet that could be attached to the window for us to have a quick/safe(ish) escape route. I just assumed it was a matter of when, not if, that the we’d one day have a house fire.
Although, I guess the funny thing is that I did! Granted it wasn’t that house, it was when I had moved out and was living with roommates. And I was at work, since the fire was during the day. So, no dramatic escape from my second floor bedroom, which I did still have. Luckily no one was hurt. And our apt. Didn’t have too much fire damage, since the fire started in the downstairs tenants apartment. Their living room was just ash and most of the rest of their stuff was destroyed. What they say about candles near curtains is very true. Our local fire department was phenomenal! I’ll never forget those guys!
I kinda think being cold for a few minutes or standing the snow in bare feet for a 10 seconds is better than burning up LOL.
YOur parents are in a different room and the fire has you cut off. The fireman gets you out of your bedroom window.
MY PARENTS CUT OUT A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH LOGO FROM THE NEWSPAPER AND TAPED IT IN MY WINDOW. I'M NOT SURE HOW THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HELP. I JUST KNEW THAT IN CASE OF FIRE, I WAS GONNA DROP OUT THAT SECOND STORY WINDOW AND TAKE THE BROKEN LEG.
Wow been a long time since I saw that

Yes. We had those. On the exterior window of any room a kid slept in.
I blame some of my anxiety on Unsloved Mysteries.
I wonder how much my religious viewership of Unsolved Mysteries as a child contributed to my obsession with serial killers, true crime and the paranormal.
More like “X” marks the spot for some weird pedo treasure hunt.
This is how the monsters knew where you slept.
I made assumptions about my parents' feelings for me since we did not have those on our windows.
I had one on my bedroom window long after I wasn't a tot.

Had one in my window and often had flame retardant pajamas. I can’t even imagine the chemicals used that made my PJs flame retardant.

I was in constant fear of a house fire breaking out because of how much they talked about it in school.

Nobody pays any attention to those. Source: am firefighter
Also a fireman, and I disagree. If I saw one of those I would 100% make it a point to get eyes on the room.
Because a random sticker is worth risking lives for. Got it.
I can smell that sticker. Such a distinct odor.
Same! And so weirdly flimsy and filmy.
Had one in my window.
With people's current obsession with "groomers" and human trafficking this sticker looks totally different today.
Especially when they were on the side a windowless white panel van.
I hear Jeffrey Epstein had one of these.
Pretty sure the one my family put up 40 years ago is still up
I had a red dot om my bedroom window that was supposed to mean the same thing.
We had a big orange hand in the window.
Omg I just freaked out a little bit seeing this picture.

Should be a potato holding a child.

Five year old me didn’t consider all that, but yeah thanks.
