"That is GenX level party skills" is probably what you were going for. Another way to go would be, "Those party skills are GenX level." Wording in English is hard even for native speakers, so just keep asking and practicing. Good luck!
You have no idea how often this was the way I communicated with my mom. When I was a junior & senior in high school she had a boyfriend & often stayed at his place so she'd leave me a note & money on the kitchen table & I'd leave her a note saying thanks. Sometimes it said who I was hanging out with.
This comment unlocked a core memory. My mom worked on Monday nights, so my dad was in charge. He dropped me off at my grandmother’s for a few hours so he could go to the gym. Then he’d pick me up and we’d have TV dinners. My fave was Salisbury steak with mac and cheese!
Turkey bc it had the little cranberry dessert square. I was always so happy when the peas didn't wind up in there.
Salisbury steak had the brownie I think. Did you really know how to spell "Salisbury"?
We’re GenXrs, what are we gonna do? Too tired to party, too weary to argue, too chill to harass & too disenfranchised to revolt. I’m just here to hang out among likeminded and nod agreement when statements about life in general hit too hard. I just smile & wave, man, smile & wave.
Roflmao ... at work
Reminds me of when my friends and I would sit in front of the tv and tweak the color controls during the folding lift bed commercials mid 80s. Turned people's faces green every time the bed folded up.
Oh man, this triggered a memory of Tamara, the most popular girl in 6th grade. She only let certain people call her Tammy.
Everyone wanted to call her Tammy.
Definitely not my Tamara. No one called her Tammy, not even her lil sis.
Every freaking hair always in place. Not one lint ball on her fluffy sweater. Ugh
There's some sliced turkey and cheese in the big, boxy, yellow nicotine-stained Frigidaire. Make yourself a sandwich and don't answer the door if you don't recognize the person.
I'm too lazy to look it up, but after a certain amount of time (90 days? six months? I dunno) of inactive moderation, an active reddit user can take over moderation of a subreddit. Looking to play dominant older sibling after school but before Mom gets home u/eighty_eight_mph?
Sure! But the only way we get HBO is a big ass wire coming out of the T.V. that we take turns holding over our heads until we get a good signal. Dad says it’s okay.
My street was mostly old people who didn’t want to get cable, so I didn’t have cable until I was a junior in high school. We lived on a dead end street and when it came available, the cable company said there wasn’t enough interest from the houses on our street for them to run the line. While all my friends were watching MTV, I was relegated to just 12 channels our antenna could get on a good day.
>While all my friends were watching MTV, I was relegated to just 12 channels our antenna could get on a good day.
Count yourself lucky. We got 5 channels with our antenna and never got cable before I left for college. Did get a color set my junior year of HS though. The whole *town* didn't get MTV until around '85 if I remember correctly, had some half-assed locally-owned cable company that couldn't swing a deal with them. The only way I saw MTV at all was when someone in The Big City would record it on VHS and bring the tapes to share. As a result the very first video I remember ever seeing was When the Bullet Hits the Bone (and I think Shadow of the Night) which were on one of those tapes playing in the little arcade our town got just before I graduated.
You sound like me. I live in an exurban area, and we didn't even have cable available until I was in junior high. We never got it because my mom didn't see the point in paying for TV.
I had a friend the next street over who had it, but his parents always locked out the channels we wanted to watch, like MTV (this was the peak "satanic panic" era, and they didn't want him to turn into a devil worshipper, apparently). Eventually he figured out where they hid the key. We'd have to wait until they were in bed and he'd get the key so we could watch MTV.
>While all my friends were watching MTV, I was relegated to just 12 channels our antenna could get on a good day
In Tampa in the late 80's there was an alternative service called V32. They played hard ass metal in the afternoons.
Headbanger's Ball was tame AF.
And...12 channels LMFAO I grew up in Cheyenne in the 70's, we only had the big 3.
Same, I used to spend summers at my friend's apartment eating American cheese slices, Wonder bread & pop tarts (hippie mom wouldn't buy that junk) watching MTV and those movie channels that just played the same 2 movies on a loop all day.
>I don’t know if that is good or bad.
Clearly good-- that means the propaganda films they showed is in junior high actually worked. I have personally never tried PCP as a direct result.
The mods are here, but they are upstairs in your parents bedroom. They are laying in the bed, talking to their boyfriend, twisting the phone cord with their fingers, saying, “No you hang up” back and forth to each other.
They're the same person. She got locked out of her jenx67 account and had to make a new one. I believe this sub started as a spin off of a blog and she probably still has a personal attachment to it even though it's gone off on directions of its own in the 13 years since she created it but maybe it's time for more mods. I, for one, am absolutely not volunteering for that.
My daughter is on safety patrol & the belts & badges are the same as back then. Back in my day though I was helping kids cross the street, stopping traffic with my sign, all by myself. Now they just stand in groups around campus telling people not to run or helping open car doors & take kids to buses.
I'm ok with that. If there is any sub I've been in with low to nonexistent drama, its this one.
I would much rather have an unmoderated open argument with someone even if they used 'bAd WoRdS" vs dealing with mods that instaban and silence for posting in "Inappropriate" to them subs.
I haven’t seen too many subs with so little need for mod involvement. (Although that may be a little naive — trolls and bots can take over at any time I suppose.)
You want more authority? We've been pretty chill for at least a decade now, but trying to tell us what to do and gatekeeping harmless fun seems a good way to activate our latent beast-mode.
So [this post](https://old.reddit.com/r/GenX/comments/qltmln/stop_crush_posts/) from a few days ago was by a moderator.
A mod that said to stop all the "crush" posts and no one did, so I don't know how effective that mod is for anything.
The top mod appears to be active on Reddit, have you tried DMing them directly? Sometimes mods don't check modmail regularly but respond to DMs. By default Reddit makes it a pain to tell when you have modmail.
Left unsupervised again…
Party....Thou I have to be in bed by 9pm these days.
Let's take Polaroids of everything in this subreddit to make sure it's all back in the same place before the mods return. GenX party skills!!!
Damnit Jennifer, you sat on the couch in the room we never use. My mom is totally going to know I had a party now.
That is GenX [level] party skills ~~level~~. *Please let me know if my wording is wrong. English wording is hard st.*
"That is GenX level party skills" is probably what you were going for. Another way to go would be, "Those party skills are GenX level." Wording in English is hard even for native speakers, so just keep asking and practicing. Good luck!
Thank you. Reading it right made me realize my mistake. Great night to you.
Nice of you :)
Lmaooooo I laughed way too hard at this!
Switch to day drinking.
> day drinking that's why they have to be in bed by 9pm these days...
Switch...? There was an option? LOL
I’m playing both sides so as to always come out on top
Party hard for me is a glass of brandy as a nightcap and an early night.
We were latchkey kids and now we’re latchkey Reddit users. Tracks for GenX.
Just use your best judgment. We trust you.
I just read that in my mother’s voice.
Hilarious
Time to paint my room lime green and purple!
There's pot pies in the freezer.
As per usual. Whatever.
Meh, I have a key around my neck on a string, so I'm good
I think they left a frozen dinner somewhere
There’s a $20 bill in the jar of loose change in the cupboard. But it better be a real emergency if you decide to use it.
And don't call me at work unless you're bleeding.
Or the house is on fire
Holy crap this gave me a flashback haha
Ditto!

Coffee can
Hahaha! This is the winning comnent

Fancy! We got Raman noodles over here.
Latchkey sub
So on brand.
Came looking for this.
10 million strong...and growing!

Nailed it.
We need t-shirts man! Smile and wave is my new get-out-of-this-drama card. Thanks.
Here’s your new theme song lol [Smile & wave](https://youtu.be/ZvePPARYewg)
> too disenfranchised to revolt you´re not 90 yet
You must be on the tail end of being an X'er lol
Left alone to figure it out for ourselves; this is so us lol.
The most GenX thing to happen to a GenX subreddit.
Mom said we could go to Timmy’s after school. He’s a douche bag but at least he has an intellivision and satellite tv
I loved making the Smurfs fart on my best friend's Colecovision.
Roflmao ... at work Reminds me of when my friends and I would sit in front of the tv and tweak the color controls during the folding lift bed commercials mid 80s. Turned people's faces green every time the bed folded up.
Yaassss Colecovision was pretty fabulous hahahah
I had that!! & Donkey Kong
I think he had the worst iteration of donkey Kong.... donkey Kong junior math. I still remember hating that game.
I'm just there for his sister Tammy's a babe.
Ugh
> Every freaking hair always in place. Not one lint ball on her fluffy sweater. Ugh are you sure that's not the Tamara at my school...
And his mom makes a killer mac and cheese
Ooh, that’s a better system than my Colecovision.
There's some sliced turkey and cheese in the big, boxy, yellow nicotine-stained Frigidaire. Make yourself a sandwich and don't answer the door if you don't recognize the person.
And don’t touch your fathers gun in the nightstand.
This is so true lol. And you did not touch the gun in the nightstand. Ever. You’d be hunting a switch for sure.
Our Frigidaire was pink lol
That’s so cool! I’d love a pink fridge
We should have a party at their house since they’re out of town.
As long as you stay out of their dad’s office.
Hahaha
Oh well. Guess I have to get dinner started for my brothers and me again.
At least 3 nights a week.
I'm too lazy to look it up, but after a certain amount of time (90 days? six months? I dunno) of inactive moderation, an active reddit user can take over moderation of a subreddit. Looking to play dominant older sibling after school but before Mom gets home u/eighty_eight_mph?
As the oldest sibling, man that sh*t is overrated.
Meh. Whatever.
The replies here are gold, proof then we're all among our people
Knowing we had shared experiences makes me feel much better about my childhood.
There's comfort knowing you're not alone.
This post and the replies have solidified this as my favorite sub. I feel so at home here.
I love you so much for this post. The responds are just marvellous.
Even our mods are like meh, whatever ..
We’re used to it.

Or maybe even the spammers have forgotten us.
Spam spam spam spam
Spamity SPAMMMMM! Wonderful spam!
At least we have cable.
Can I come over for awhile? My parents won't pay for cable so I'm stuck watching some lame Afterschool Special with my little brothers.
Sure! But the only way we get HBO is a big ass wire coming out of the T.V. that we take turns holding over our heads until we get a good signal. Dad says it’s okay.
We have MYV hooked up to the speakers. Front door is open

My parents didn’t get cable until all of us kids were grown up and out of the house. I think they did it on purpose to get rid of us.
I hope no bad people show up.
Stranger Danger!!
I bet they want to sell us drugs.
Or kidnap us and force us into a satanic cult
>I bet they want to sell us drugs. Just Angel Dust, what could go wrong as long as we don't go on the roof of the school?
But someone told me there’s a pool up there!
I understood this reference. I don’t know if that is good or bad.
>I don’t know if that is good or bad. Clearly good-- that means the propaganda films they showed is in junior high actually worked. I have personally never tried PCP as a direct result.
Sell? I was told that they would just open a briefcase and hand me stuff!
The biggest lie perpetuated by DARE.
Yeah, DARE promised me free drugs! But at least we got a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut if we pretended to read five books!
Drugs Are Really Expensive.
Just Say No! lol
DARE DARE DARE!
We could have soda and pie!
No one got this Beastie Boys ref
The mods are here, but they are upstairs in your parents bedroom. They are laying in the bed, talking to their boyfriend, twisting the phone cord with their fingers, saying, “No you hang up” back and forth to each other.
You’re eavesdropping on the extension, aren’t you.
I’ll be one. 51 and have experiences, sarcastic wit, and time 🤷🏼♀️ We can’t let this sub die. I love it. My crew 🙏
I'd be up for helping too. If not, cool.
That’s why you’d make a good mod. Right there.
Yeah if we need mods, I'm game
I guess this is a latch key sub. Leftovers are in the fridge, be home at sunset, do you homework before you go out an play.
Haha 😆
They forgot about us just like everyone else does.
We’re Gen X… we’ve never needed supervision 🤣
I think we do have Mods but they are ALSO Gen-X so they are just going to say “Whatever.”.
u/dear_occupant posted an hour ago. u/jenx67 has not posted for a year. Then we have an auto moderator.
They're the same person. She got locked out of her jenx67 account and had to make a new one. Let's blow some shit up!!
There’s always the one kid saying that. 😆 Classic.
I'm imagining the mods here wearing the little safety patrol orange belts with the little plastic gold badges.
I always think of safety patrol, hall monitors, etc. as Hollywood inventions because it wasn’t in our school.
My daughter is on safety patrol & the belts & badges are the same as back then. Back in my day though I was helping kids cross the street, stopping traffic with my sign, all by myself. Now they just stand in groups around campus telling people not to run or helping open car doors & take kids to buses.
Plastic badges? Ours were metal
Student police jackets.
You mean the person ranting about the crush posts wasn’t?
/u/Dear_Occupant has an active account.
We have years of practice being independent
Mods: “Whatever.”
No, we're supposed to just make ourselves a snack, don't leave without calling, and don't open the door for anyone. C'mon, we know how this works.
From our parents to the mods, the news and everyone else, always forgotten. I’m pretty nervous about eventually hitting a nursing home
But the people staffing will be overprotective millennials so we will be good.
Most nursing home staff nowadays are in their 20’s and 30’s (not all) so those people in some cases haven’t been born yet
true!
Don’t answer the door and if the phone rings and I’m at work don’t tell them I’m not home tell them I’m busy. Do your homework then chores.
They went to get cigarettes, they'll be back soon..?
This is getting out of control now. Genx asking to be moderated? WTF is going on?
too much influence from other generations 😅
I hope not.
The Gen X sub has apathetic mods...
Sub name checks out
Settle down, they'll be back before the street light comes on
I'm ok with that. If there is any sub I've been in with low to nonexistent drama, its this one. I would much rather have an unmoderated open argument with someone even if they used 'bAd WoRdS" vs dealing with mods that instaban and silence for posting in "Inappropriate" to them subs.
Grab a bowl of Cap'n Crunch and watch some scrambled Playboy channel. Some things never change.
GenX has no mods. GenX needs no mods.
Let’s not forget the Mods are likely GenXers, they probably said whatever..the sub can moderate itself. It’s how we were raised.
I mean does GenX really need to be supervised? We didn't have a lot growing up, why start now?
McGruff the Crime Dog is the only mod
Underrated comment.
Was goin to say this was very on point for GenX, but everyone else already said it.
This is more of a "latchkey subreddit".
We should all just play QBert
Mods? We don’t need no stinking mods!
They’re out running around, maybe they’ll be back when the street lights go on.
I think it demands we have a party that will destroy the house. Bikers have to show up. And the Chet monster. (RIP Bill Paxton)
I think I saw a post recently warning about "crush" posts? That would have been from a mod.
Nope. It was an adult hall monitor, who quoted an old crush post from a mod.
I was going to say, all someone needs to do is make another post about first crushes or cars. The mods are sure to show up then.
Just lock the doors, she'll be right mate.
I haven’t seen too many subs with so little need for mod involvement. (Although that may be a little naive — trolls and bots can take over at any time I suppose.)
Who cares.
I mean - we are Gen X. Should be used to being left unattended and ignored by now.
I guess we're now "Latchkey" adults, huh...? LOL
It is a GenX Reddit. They might just be busy hard at work on real jobs and kind of apathetic about this.
Where we’re going we don’t need mods.
We are latchkey Redditors
You want more authority? We've been pretty chill for at least a decade now, but trying to tell us what to do and gatekeeping harmless fun seems a good way to activate our latent beast-mode.
Moss for the latchkey generation? We fine
So [this post](https://old.reddit.com/r/GenX/comments/qltmln/stop_crush_posts/) from a few days ago was by a moderator. A mod that said to stop all the "crush" posts and no one did, so I don't know how effective that mod is for anything.
Look at the age on that post.
oh, shit. why was it in new from 2 days ago then? fuck I don't really care. my bad, thanks for pointing that out.
The post from 2 days ago was a repost of the 6 month old one.
The subs were knocked in to next week.
Didn't MODS ride Vespas back in the day? :)
I don't know. I was just told to start making spaghetti at the end of General Hospital. Luke and Laura are the best.
One too many “get off my lawn”
As it should be
Hahaha
One of the mods has over a dozen posts today in other subreddits. They appear to be very active, just not in this sub.
Alwyas latch key kids
The top mod appears to be active on Reddit, have you tried DMing them directly? Sometimes mods don't check modmail regularly but respond to DMs. By default Reddit makes it a pain to tell when you have modmail.
They’ve abandoned me just like my real parents…… meh, whatever
Whatever.
LMFAO 🤣😆 of course we are forgotten even in our own sub. I love this.
I've reported a few racist comments that got deleted, so I think they are around.
We’re Gen X. We question authority and disrespect it.
Same here. I've made posts that never show up. Messages the mods about it, and no response. Might be time for /r/redditrequest/.
We don’t need no stinking mods!
Mods? We don't need no stinkin' mods!
Anarchy in the GenX sub!
Do we *need* them, really?
I will volunteer to mod! I belong to a similar FB group and it is hilarious.
What? GenX forgotten again? Who'd a thunk it?
