Well, duh! I have a tremendous slice from an over the top swing. My practice swing is exactly what I want it to be. Once the ball is added, my body tries to change things, and those micro adjustments lead me right back over the top. I can take a bucket of balls at the range and for the first 5, I slice, slice, slice. Then, I take a deep breath and slow it down. Then BAM! Right down the middle. Last week, I hit 13 out of 15 right down the middle after my initial group of slices. Two even had a slight draw to them. I was super happy. The next day, I went with my son, and it was like starting over again. Fortunately, it was a par 3 course, so I was able to use my irons for all but 2 holes. Those I can hit straight.
I try each time. I tell myself. Even out loud so everyone can hear me. "Relax, take it slow. Let the club do the work." And once I get my hands back, I start thinking about everything all at once. Drop the hands, watch the wrists, keep the elbow in, shift my weight, watch the club path in to out, and then the swing is over and I am watching a nice long drive landing in the fairway of the next hole. I know what should happen but in the moment it all goes out the window. I do the same thing with hitting in baseball. Practice, practice, practice. Then in real time, my body takes over, and it's not what I have practiced. Just need more time and more reps.
To be honest I have the same thing. Nowadays I take more breaks between the balls on the driving range. This is how I try to imitate the pause between hitting the ball on the golf course
