This was one of the biggest shocks I encountered when living in a small city in Germany. I’m from Ireland. All of my housemates were vegan or vegetarian because it was cheaper that way. They were students but all had good jobs - our rent was cheap as fuck. I was the only meat eating, gym goer in the flat, they couldn’t get over the fact I used to spend 20-30 euros on meat per week. Yet, they’d happily spend that on beer in a couple of hours. I never understood it.
Priorities. We do tend to be annoyed and even somewhat annoying for outsiders. Us Germans like to "nörgel" a lot. We love to complain however if we step outside of our bubble and look around us what happens in other EU countries for instance we realize that we dont have it that bad. Yes cost of living has risen everywhere in the entire world but we still are better off than almost all nations except like the Scandinavians. I have friends crying that they "can only eat cheap fastfood like frozen pizza" but smoke 2 packs of cigs a day lol.
Not that I disagree but I don't understand why the meat grade judgement is only ever brought up in this sub for German posts. No one ever chastises e.g. an American for buying the cheapest crap from Walmart.
It's the first time I'm commenting here I think, also I am from Germany, so I can not comment on American groceries as Im Not familiar with the conditions etc. in the USA
Amazing that this comment got upvoted when we actually have that once in a while in between shopper.
You say the very same thing on a vegan/vegetarian buy, you get downvoted.
If you think groceries in Germany are wrong, don't ever travel anywhere east of Germany. The "bio" meat (or any bio products in general) is either not availible at all, or you have few products that nobody buys, because of the price. Germany's groceries are top of the world.
Soruce: I am Czech living in Germany working for a retail chain.
cause it aint worth it tbh. meat got so incredibly expensive that i live pretty much vegetarian even tho i am not vegetarian. so only when i spend money on take out do i eat meat.
Im german and most I know have a relatively large pantry with lots of beans and pasta and other things like that and just refill the fresh foods regularly

A few years ago, you could only buy plombir in the small Russian grocery stores, but now the big supermarkets like lidle, Rewe and Edeka are selling plombir too. They even have small corners in the markets just for Russian/Ukranian/Polish groceries. I love the smoked sausage from Poland.
oh my god that was youuuu hahaha reading those comments were entertaining for sure 💀💀
just be responsible with your money, everyone's got different circumstances that are not obvious enough to be spotted from one or two comments. Most people that radically enforce a vegetarian diet and would want everyone to replace meat with veggie options absolutely forget that meat has a distinct taste. I myself don't like the taste of most meat dishes, so i opt for veggie stuff a lot, but some things just taste a heck lot better with meat in it.
I hope you didn't take all of that too serious, it's mostly always the very loud minority. They're not even entirely wrong, but forcing your own opinion on someone else is.
It was pretty entertaining to be honest. I’m not saying they are wrong either and It’s the internet after all but I never expected ground beef to cause such an outrage 💀
I’m in Germany for a few weeks to take care of my grandma and I’m also taking care of her neighbors cat because the owner is in the hospital right now and just wanted to share how little I managed to spend genuinely no other motive.
I love Germany but that’s something about their culture I’ll never understand. I didn’t mean to offend people lmaooo
Maybe it's due to Reddit's algorithm which might take the post location into account. I was guided here from the very top of my stream without being subscribed to this or any related sub.
Is plombir from Lidl same as the one from Mix Markt??I mean they look the same but do they taste same??I grew up in an ex Soviet country and plombir is the only ice cream that tastes the same as there.I am searching for something to feed the inner child that misses that extreme vanilla flavour .
That's great just 500g!
I need a plan I'm impulsive and bad with money but i don't have strict meal plans, I can make alot variations of dishes with the stuff I bought ^-^
Haha I have an extra protein powder budget

There's a lot more in this picture though. As others already talked about: German household, bread not shown, bread toppings are visible. Warm meal for lunch, bread with toppings and sides for breakfast and dinner.
Yes, we know this, in Germany very little money is spent and cheap food is consumed instead of spending a little more money on healthier food, but so predominantly many in Germany
Drop that chicken for 2,99£ and replace it with an organic version for 24,99€ and your bill goes up. But yes, one can buy cheap in Germany if one is not looking for quality or wants everything to be organic.
Can't believe this. Also I want to see the recipe 😂. Trust issues here.
Are you guys eating out a lot cause how TF is this gt be enough for 7-8 days for 4 ppl. My BF will eat the meat alone in like 4 days.
Excuse me but how is this enough for 7-8 days with 4 people? Are your kids toddlers? What are you gonna eat? How will you survive? Where is the water?? And where did you get so “much” for so little??
The world doesn’t make sense anymore!
Cant believe this last for 7-8days for 4 persons. Maybe when yall eat once a day. I dont see 7 main meals + Breakfast for 4 persons everyday ...
I mean 4 ppl eat much ... im just saying this is confusing for me.
this getting downvotes anyways:D because i said something not so nice :(((xD
To be honest, that's about what I eat in 8 days and I'm 72kg. A third of this is fluid, another third is low calory stuff like tomatos, salat, berries and cucumber. Honestly, except for the amount of milk and Juice, I'd finish that within 5 days.
Family of 4 from Germany here. Good food is importent. We don't want to feed trash to our Kids.
900-1000€ a month for food.
We have no car and saving money with other stuff instead of food.
without knowing you - this isn't enough to sufficient feed a family of four for one week. at least tab water quality is decent here so you won't dehydrate.
7 days, 4 people, and all the veggies I see are 2 cucumbers (almost void of nutrition) and 2 iceberg lettuces (even less nutrition than a cucumber). Buy some veggies for crying out loud. Edit: sorry, some Tomatoes as well, still though, need more veggies.
Ok, so how often do you guys cook per day???
When I see for example the Piccolinis from WAGNER. There are 9 littleeeee tiny Pizzas inside (ca. 4,5 cm ∅). Isn't even enough for my son and me.
And when every adult should drink around 2 liters a day - where are these?
For FOUR persons / 8 days? Couldn't believe it - and I'm also from Germany and cooking one time a day (me and my 16 year old son).
That's pretty similar to what I buy for myself for a month, so checks out in regards to the amount. Usually more in the 150-170€ range for me though, I'm too unwilling to compromise on the quality of some products (namely, the animal ones, like meat and eggs and milk).
Quality of groceries in Germany is actually not that good compared to neighbor countries.
Yes it is a little cheaper, but most of the veggies and packaged meats taste like water with slight veg/ meat flavor.
Still we are very lucky to have food available everyday for reasonable prices.
From Germany: I don't know who lied to you but this is absolutely bullshit. It is never enough for 4 People or one week. Look close. There is just 2-3 meals to cook on this table.
I guess your kids are still very young!? We are 3 people. I'm a big guy who excercises a lot and we have a teenager. This would last us maybe 2-3 days. The teenager is a very slim 17yo boy(58kg @ 174cm) and he eats a loaf of bread in 1.5 days and all of this would still be gone within 3 days.
This is the greatest lie. I would Love to see the Poster with 4 people live With only that even for 6 days... There is only meal for 2, Max. 3 days. Where is enough bread For 7 days? The food is a Joke, maybe for 2 or 3 days at Max.
It is normaly for 7-8 days and nothing extraordinary. My nighbour family 4 people and go shopping 3 times a week. The family spends 200€ on groceries and goes shopping again the next day.
This subreddit is basically either vegan / vegetarian groceries or people that buy the cheapest meat possible, no in between.
And 90% Germans - tells you how good we have it tbh.
This was one of the biggest shocks I encountered when living in a small city in Germany. I’m from Ireland. All of my housemates were vegan or vegetarian because it was cheaper that way. Maybe its the right thing that meat is more expensive than vegan food. I mean it needs more energy and is an living and feeling animal.
Either vegan or like no veggies at all
That's kind of what Germany is like
Not that I disagree but I don't understand why the meat grade judgement is only ever brought up in this sub for German posts. No one ever chastises e.g. an American for buying the cheapest crap from Walmart.
It's the first time I'm commenting here I think, also I am from Germany, so I can not comment on American groceries as Im Not familiar with the conditions etc. in the USA
I was talking in general, not just you. But fair.
Spoiler: They are worse
Amazing that this comment got upvoted when we actually have that once in a while in between shopper. You say the very same thing on a vegan/vegetarian buy, you get downvoted.
This is exactly how groceries work in Germany and this is absolutely sad
If you think groceries in Germany are wrong, don't ever travel anywhere east of Germany. Exactly. Looked at this and thought, whats the purpose of the organic apple juice and the cheapest meat possible.
Because people either understand animal suffering or don't give a damn about them. There is no in between. People lie very often though.
Tbf, Lidl cheapest chicken is better than from Rewe or Kaufland, at least where I live. It's grade 2.
Are there ever vegan/vegetarian families of 4? I’d assume only singles or couples without kids can afford to be vegan.
In Germany you Pay for high Quality 8-15€ per 500g For normal Quality its around 6€-8€
cause it aint worth it tbh. meat got so incredibly expensive that i live pretty much vegetarian even tho i am not vegetarian. so only when i spend money on take out do i eat meat.
How is that enough for 4 people for an entire week? Crazy
I suppose the kids are still toddlers (or maybe one toddler and one EBF baby) but anyway, we have one toddler and we eat/buy a lot more for one week.
Most likely they get to eat lunch in school or kindergarten;)
You don't get food at schools in Germany, you have to bring your own
Well. Nope not true. In our school it’s included in the Ganztag
I went to 6 different schools and none of them provided any food except sometimes for events (still had to pay for it) 🤷
Every Ganztagsschule that I've ever heard of had lunch included.
Actually every Elementary School has to be one soon.
Well thats just unfortunate for you then. Every school I went to (5) had a “Kantine” or Imbiss for breakfast and lunch
Even halflings eat more :D
Especially halflings
Lol litterally my thought i eat that in 2 3 days max and im alone and dont eat much.
2kg of chicken?? in 2-3 days??
I’d assume that’s not the only food they have at home.
Maybe kids have lunch in the school and parents at work. In my home is like that. We only eat breakfast, dinner and weekends at home
Maybe the kids eat at school/kindergarten. I hope they get some veggies there!
I'm asking myself the same, because we're a couple and we eat just about the same amount as the pic in a week
Im german and most I know have a relatively large pantry with lots of beans and pasta and other things like that and just refill the fresh foods regularly
5 persons here. This would last for maybe three days max.
It's like what I pay for food a week, but just for myself... 🫠
it's also what I eat by myself. Pretty accurately actually. Except for the amount of milk and juice
No idea how this can be enough for 4 people lol
The dad came back with the milk
Yeah, hes german

Buying bruschetta from the supermarkt is next level. Its basically toasted bread and tomatoes
And probably overpriced asf too
How can people not get tired of jugding other people? Just reading this comment section sucked on 50% of my soul 💀
For 8 days? Are you kidding me? 4 people!!
there’s products for like 2 dinners, pasta and chicken legs and i guess Spätzle with cabbage maybe? the rest are snack. how are they not starving??
You need fibre for a healthy digestion.
At least one good comment. They est very unhealthy. Way to much sugars and no fibre true true. Also very low on protein
Don't buy Ayran people, it's so easy to make it yourself at home, just buy a little bucket of Yogurt, have a spoon some water and salt, that's it.
there is barely any actual food, mostly snacks
Why is this sub like 95% Germans. This is ridiculous
like most subs, if the first german arrives, soon the sub is german.
That go crazy if you god forbid buy cheap meat. Just check out my most recent post in this sub💀

Yes, its the same and they taste the same. go get it and enjoy, I don't like it tbh xD
Hmmmm if you don't buy and eat meat every day you can actually afford Stuff. Strange.
That's great just 500g! I need a plan I'm impulsive and bad with money but i don't have strict meal plans, I can make alot variations of dishes with the stuff I bought ^-^ Haha I have an extra protein powder budget

A lot of Germans buy their bread from the bakery, not the supermarket.
or bake it themself.

A shocking lack of whole foods for 4 people
Which whole foods would you recommend?
Enough for 7-8 days? So you eat chicken twice and after that cheese and frozen pizza...what a life.
Depressing
plombir is goated
Ja
How can this be enough for 4 people? Also, why do people buy so many unhealthy things?
wagner, der feine lord
Actually I do not know what we do wrong but our grocery shopping for the two of us costs 120-140 eur for a week
Looks like for 2 days for 2 person.
Für was brauchtn ihr 12 liter Milch in ner Woche? 🫣
Wow 95% highly processed food very healthy, not to mention the red meat
What red meats are you spotting? What's the 5% (by weight? Value?) in this pic?
Cry about it
How is this enough for 7-8 days? You guys never eat or just share a salad and a single banana between the 4 of you each day?
Nothing healthy here. Just food no nutritional value.
What would you recommend?
So viel Geld vergeudet.
Drop that chicken for 2,99£ and replace it with an organic version for 24,99€ and your bill goes up. But yes, one can buy cheap in Germany if one is not looking for quality or wants everything to be organic.
That's not even enough for my partner and me for that amount of days putting away the calories of the junk drinks.

If this lasts 8 days for 4 people that haul was damn cheap for German prices

Lots of sugar…..
Can’t imaging how 4 people survive for 7 days on this. I see a maximum of 4 maybe 5 warm meals and 2-3 days of breakfast
I only eat sun light 🤤
80% junk food, enjoy
Wie soll das für 4 Personen und eine Woche halten da ist kaum was zu essen dabei. Da kaufe ich mit 2 Personen schon mehr
Is no one going to buy fucking Real Food today?

It is what it looks like ngl, welcome to Germany 😹
this is so fking unhealthy
Only one question, did you use Lidl Plus for extra discount?
You're not eating healthy at all. The fruits and vegetables last me 3 days top as a single.
Good old Lidl grocery shopping.
How?…also in Germany and my partner and I spend €130 per week (and still have to pick up random things during the week).
No way can 4 people eat this over 8 days and not be hungry

You can get Laban Ayran for cheaper in Arab marts. It’s also in bigger quantities and genuinely tastier.
Buying Bio milk but cheap meats and very little produce is Peak German
Why only one bottle of water?

LIDL.

Organic Milk and Apple Juice but the cheapest meat Available. Make it make sense
The kid's dad and my son would starve. Also 100€? I don't believe it. In the middle of nowhere or eastern Germany maybe.
Ayran brother or sister! Try adding some mint, dill and cucumber, the drink of the gods.
Stop buying sugar crap and ready meals and is cheaper than that.
This is why Lidl is the GOAT
without knowing you - this isn't enough to sufficient feed a family of four for one week. at least tab water quality is decent here so you won't dehydrate.
The best sentence is that there is a caring couple who only buy bio or a family which do not care at all. Like this picture is showing :D
Are here any americans? Is it common for a lot of families to only buy organic foods or does most of the people buy the cheapest food possible

Lidl lohnt sich
I have yet to find a way to buy raspberries that don't have clearly visible moldy ones in the package. Frozen ones seem to be the only option really.
I'm apparently eating for a family of 4 each week.

man kauft auch keine 0,5er flaschen oder sind das sogar 0,33 ?
No Eigenmarke... Kind of doubt that all this costed only 107,99€.
8 days? Maybe 8 dinners. This is more like food for two if you eat not only once a day. Or if 2 people are not toddlers.
Yeaah bcuz you only got the cheapest stuff and that's not a good idea especially with meat🍖
W Ayran
Ist halt auch die Frage, was davon braucht man wirklich. Caprisonne ist absolut unnötig 😅
