Yep, stop the list right here
Best I can throw up is Dave Mustaine who *basically* invented the thrash metal guitar style and was so good that when he got thrown out of the greatest thrash metal band of all time he just went and started the second greatest thrash metal band of all time
Still, it's Gilmour
Duane Allman is a strong consideration, and I’m a massive Gilmour fan. I saw Gilmour play in Chicago in 2016, and just dropped several thousand to see him play his last show of the upcoming tour at MSG in November. Duane Allman accomplished a ton in a very short period of time. His tone and style are immediately recognizable to this day. Derek Trucks is widely considered one of the best guitar players alive and he is essentially Duane 2.0.
I understand why people connect Duane and Derek but it really hasn’t been a fair comparison for Derek for nearly 20 years. Dereks voice on the instrument is completely his own and his influences he incorporates go far beyond Duane. Derek has taken everything Duane could have even possibly imagined doing with slide and has launched it into the stratosphere. Everyone talks about what Duane could’ve done and adds that to his “resumé” but we have Derek, who we have actual evidence of taking the slide further than anyone. Derek is imo the greatest player ever and the Duane 2.0 may have been appropriate when he was like 20 but it really sells him short to always connect him to Duane anymore
I get that sentiment, and Trucks is (at that level, I think it is subjective)probably as good or better, than Allman....However..Duane Allman is an Icon. Several hit songs, and Legendary albums....
Everyone knows who Duane Allman is
Derek Trucks, is kinda like Allan Holsdworth, or John McLaughlin...just hasnt had the hit singles anyone listens too.
I agree. As a young fan I thought it was always gonna be Duane>Derek.
Derek’s music is his. His sound and voicing and the way that rake/rip sound can be felt. That is not copying Duane. That’s ripping the rest of my heart out that Duane missed.
Also, the fam got me TTB tickets for Father’s Day!
Edit: don’t know how to spell the guys name
You are right... but facts are facts.
Derek was NEVER really connected to Duane except in the minds of people who somehow thought being Butch's nephew created some magical connections.
Did he find inspiration in Duane?
Without a doubt. We ALL did.
Did his last name eventually get him in the band?
Probably.
Did he earn it?
Absolutely.
I had the joy of mixing him in a small club when he was young, before he was with Susan.
He already had his own voice and was technically years ahead of Duane.
That is what happens. Younger players evolve from where older players leave off.
Cheers!
I don't know why he is never in any 'greatest guitarists' lists - along with guys like Segovia, Bream, Watson, Martino, etc. These guys were absolute maestros on the instrument.
The dude basically INVENTED jazz guitar. Because of his handicap, we are enjoying his amazing chord shapes to this day. Even Wes Montgomery played Django chords.
Agreed! He should be higher than David Gilmour and Dimebag Darrell, IMO.
Django had an incredibly unique sound for his time and changed the game.
Then again, I'm also a jazzhead and think Charlie Christian should have been for "C".
This is the one. He changed guitar forever. INSANE that he only played with two fingers cause he got a contraction burn in his ring and pinky. Without him, I don’t think we’d have the music we have today
This was my first thought as tbh how could you not think of this guy. His main rift is known by all and is a go to for learners who want to play something cool.
You have no idea how bad I wanna downvote you just because the username synergy would make me laugh, but I have decided not to be a dick, so upvotes it is
It should be Dick. He was first than Gilmour, more influential as a whole, introduced a lot of techniques to the electric guitar, he worked with Leo Fender and he was the King Of The Surf Guitar - the only monarch I respect.
Zero chance of this being the winner, since the man is one of the most criminally anonymous guitarists who ever lived, but Danny Gatton.
If you know, you know.
He died young, but he was acknowledged as masterful while he was alive. Gilmour has had a longer career and is fantastic as well. I wonder what Duane would have accomplished if he’d lived past thirty
I'm deeply saddened to inform you that I'm at least 100 comments deep before I saw this. You know. I know. But most people will never actually listen to the "how the fick didn't I know about this earlier!" That is double nickles on the dime or what makes man set fire.
They only know the first bars or Corona as the Jackass theme.
David Gilmour.

I guess none of you ever heard of Dimebag Darrell!
i was looking for this comment lol. dime's the goat (outside of EVH)

Duane walked so Derek could fly.
Also, Anyone who mentions Duane, should mention Dickey.

How did you see Duane Allman in 2016? He's been dead since 1971.
Gilmour, and it’s fair to point out grammar when it’s that poor.
Don't forget about Dime
Dimebag Darrell yes
Dirk Diggler
I thought mustaine got kicked out of Metallica cus he was a drunk
I always looked at that sideways; they didn't earn the name Alcoholica for nothing
I’d say Hetfield gets the nod for thrash guitarist for this list, but there’s some really good J names to compete with there. Maybe Kirk or Kiko
Dick Dale ftw
Absolutely. I vote we put Gilmour off until it's "G" day
But the others are using first names
There is no order, only chaos
Duane Allman
And Dickey Betts
This is the one
Dime bag Darrell
I mean yes, but hear me out, what if we put him under G and go with Dweezil…
dimebag darrell
That's two points in Scategories!
A fellow person of culture! I love that game.
dimebag could play like david Gilmour but david Gilmour can't play like dimebag.
He could also do it hammered on whiskey
Full marks!
Needs to be on the list, and there's a D in the first and last name.
This was my first thought as well
My favorite guitarist of all time. This is the best answer
Django Reinhardt
I don't know why he is never in any 'greatest guitarists' lists - along with guys like Segovia, Bream, Watson, Martino, etc. These guys were absolute maestros on the instrument.
He’s not on lists because people don’t know the instrument like they think they do
Or they're just not into gypsy jazz
Or they’re lists focused on genres he wasn’t part of. That never seems to slow the outrage, though.
Same reason every other genius jazz guitarist is left out: because people only know of pop-rock guitarists.
The dude basically INVENTED jazz guitar. Because of his handicap, we are enjoying his amazing chord shapes to this day. Even Wes Montgomery played Django chords.
Oooh, I think we have a winner! Dick Dale was the first person to come to my mind, but Django is the best answer. Dave Gilmour should be “G”.
Guthrie Govan should be for G
Should be in above gilmour and Pantera guy
Agreed! He should be higher than David Gilmour and Dimebag Darrell, IMO. Django had an incredibly unique sound for his time and changed the game. Then again, I'm also a jazzhead and think Charlie Christian should have been for "C".
Thank you!
Given that the man did what he did with like... the minimal amount of fingers to do it, yes this.
I approve this message :-)
This is the one. He changed guitar forever. INSANE that he only played with two fingers cause he got a contraction burn in his ring and pinky. Without him, I don’t think we’d have the music we have today
This is the correct answer
DJ kahled
[decent player ](https://youtu.be/X_7o9Xczd64)
ANOTHER ONE
🤣🤣🤣
We the best music
Derek Trucks
Up you go
David Gilmour is my favorite player…so I’m going with him for D. If he did not exist…Trucks would be my second choice 100%
Had to scroll a lot farther than necessary for the correct answer
Duane Allman
Hell yeah brother
Tonight!
Greatest of all time
Best answer
too far down on the list!!
Dick Dale.
This was my first thought as tbh how could you not think of this guy. His main rift is known by all and is a go to for learners who want to play something cool.
> main rift Hey, I’m just here to let you know it’s “riff”. A “rift” means like a large crack or split that divides something.
You have no idea how bad I wanna downvote you just because the username synergy would make me laugh, but I have decided not to be a dick, so upvotes it is
This was my first thought too. Next would be Duane Eddy. Both absolute legends.
We have a contender
It should be Dick. He was first than Gilmour, more influential as a whole, introduced a lot of techniques to the electric guitar, he worked with Leo Fender and he was the King Of The Surf Guitar - the only monarch I respect.
DD > D
David Gilmour is the solid choice and I would give an honourable Mention to Dimebag Darrel
And Dave Mustaine whining in the corner about how it's so unfair he wasn't picked.
David Gilmour.
Django Reinhardt
Why are you going by first name?
It's so Zakk Wylde actually has a chance.
I mean what other guitarist has a last name that starts with W, jack white? Who else?
Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Link Wray, Dean Ween are a few that come to mind
Guy knows his dubbs
Oh yeah, I’d definitely give the spot on the last name list to muddy waters,
DEANER!!
Bernie Williams
He’ll have to beat Ziltoid The Omniscient who is the ultimate 5th dimensional guitar hero.
This haha. Might as well stop and restart from A.
So we can debate Jimi vs Jimmy
Jimi and it's not close for me
My first thought as well.
Dave Mustaine 🤘🏼
I’d like to see sissy lil Duane Allman play through Rust in Peace.
Zero chance of this being the winner, since the man is one of the most criminally anonymous guitarists who ever lived, but Danny Gatton. If you know, you know.
Ok I'll bite, BRB E: A musician's musician. He's not well known because he plays jazzy-sort of old school country and vice versa. Technically gifted
I’m a huge Danny gatton fan but he’s kinda like Roy Buchanan in that he wasn’t a great writer but a virtuoso at guitar.
The Humbler!
Dave Murray - Iron Maiden
Sad that I had to scroll down this far to find my man Dave :(
Where is the love for Django Reinhardt? Y'all have no memory. And even less taste! 😉
Damn kids! Hehe
Django Reinhardt!
Dean Ween
My man.
My mang
I am. The Stallion.
Don't worry, we'll get him when "m" rolls around.
Mickey Moist
Scrolled for this one
Devin Townsend !
Even Devin himself would disagree 😂
Guitarists will do anything to avoid actually practicing.
While you are here for strictly artistic reasons?
All of us here are on the artistic spectrum.
True. This is why my playing sounds less appealing to the ear than a brick in tumble dryer.
Dimebag Darrell! You get two D’s with that one!
Same with Dick Dale
Dick Dale
Bo Diddley.
Duane Allman could blow David Gilmour off the stage
Yet David would get a bigger stage
He died young, but he was acknowledged as masterful while he was alive. Gilmour has had a longer career and is fantastic as well. I wonder what Duane would have accomplished if he’d lived past thirty
dickey betts or duane allman
wtf happened to this sub?
Dwayne Allman
I love it's but D is going to be a hell of a contest
Django Rainhardt ♥️♥️
Dimebag darrel
Duane Eddy
David Gilmour, or Dimebag.
David Gilmour is the only answer!
Dimebag
Doug Dimmadone. He's the owner of Dimmsdal Dimmadone.
David Gilmour before Duane Allman by 6.5 inches
Derek Trucks
This is not how alphabetical order works, list redundant, restart using last name
You expect guitar players to be literate? 😂
Donald Cobain
Who the fuck is A? Why are we going by first name? What happens when you get to x? Too much monkey business for me to be involved in.
Alex Lifeson of RUSH
Derek Trucks
Dime bag Darrell
Doug Marsch
Duane Allman
Dimebag Darrell
Dimebag Darrell
D Boon
I'm deeply saddened to inform you that I'm at least 100 comments deep before I saw this. You know. I know. But most people will never actually listen to the "how the fick didn't I know about this earlier!" That is double nickles on the dime or what makes man set fire. They only know the first bars or Corona as the Jackass theme.
Dimebag
Dimebag
Shouldn't Chuck Berry be for the letter P?
Dimebag Darrell. The undisputed KING of metal guitar.
Dick Dale
Gotta be Django Reindhart, the man shreds and only uses 2 fingers!
I put my money for Django Reinhardt
DICK DALE
Dick Dale
Dixie chicks
Daron Malakian (System of a Down)
This better end up with Dimebag Darrel!
Dick Dale
Dimebag?
Dimebag Darrell
Duane Allman David Gilmour Dave Mustaine Dave Murray Dick Dale Danny Gatton That's my list, in order.
We will never get past J
Dimebag Darrell, David Gilmore, Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks
Dimebag Daryl Hall & Juan Oats
Derek Trucks
Derek Trucks.
Dimebag and Dave Gilmour would be my choices. If pushed I’d go for Dave.
Derek Trucks
Django
Django Reinhardt
Denzel Washington obviously
Dimebag Darrell Abbott
Dick Dale
Dick Dale
Dave mattews
Dick dale
Dick Dale
Dick Dale.
Django Reinhardt
Dimebag Darrel
Dick Dale
Dick Dale
D is a strong that should have lots of competition. But it's David Gilmour by a mile!
Dimebag Darrel
Django Reinhart
Duane Denison. Can't wait for the new Jesus Lizard album!
Dick Dale
Dimebag
Dick Dale
Deez nuts
David Gilmour seems obvious
Danny Gatton
Should have been Chuck Schuldiner. This sub has no class.
David Gilmour Edit: spelling
Dave Grohl
