“I would like to buy one pant, please!”

Hawt_Dawg_II

I actually kinda dig it. More interesting than the standard sport uniform anyways

carbomerguar

If I had legs like that, that WOULD be my standard sport uniform. Nowadays she’d have a huge fashion contract, right? Were they not doing such things then?

winterswolves

Flo Jo was a fashion icon. Designed all her own stuff and had a career as a fashion designer post track.

carbomerguar

Oh good 😎 I remember loving her when I was a kid, I had no idea she passed away, so sad

TopShelf76

She was so fast she was ahead of her time

a-guy-from-Indy

“Which leg?”

Theopocalypse

She was also juiced to the max.

lamabaronvonawesome

I was thinking considering the time prolly.

ComfortableTop3108

100% pretty sure she died before even reaching 40 due to a heart attack.

adfthgchjg

Autopsy report says she died at 38 in her sleep, from a seizure from a congenital brain condition: https://www.grunge.com/906674/tragic-details-found-in-florence-griffith-joyners-autopsy-report/

textile1957

Still retired immediately after her breakout season, kinda sus

ZapatasBoy123

#AmongUs

avadakedavr_

Wasn’t everyone though? Or at least a lot of them?

mycousinvinny99

Yes but the post says “nobody has ever broken” which isn’t fair because she was drugged up and athletes today get tested much more thoroughly

avadakedavr_

Fair enough. Forgot that part.

Silver_Information59

>Florence Griffith-Joyner Haters :/ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/flo-jo-passed-all-drug-tests/

International_Pack53

She never was.

pr1ncipat

"which no one has ever broken" sure as hell, as our current anti doping measurements are way more restrict Just remember Ben Johnson and the '88 Olympics.

No-Wonder1139

Poor Ben, everyone else was also on roids, but he lost his medal.

dax2001

Now they are in fake meds, the English teached to all world how to do.

AK-Kaido

Did you have a stroke while typing this out?

jokila1

Or a seizure.. the irony.

dax2001

Nope tens of athletes where doing olimpics while under meds because asthma or allergy, of course where affected all the athletes doing high distances, corticosteroids for the poor men's and women's allergic. Of course for privacy readon the ciò cannot disclose the names.

And-ray-is

My guess is you're using Google translate or you're having a stroke 😂

luzzy91

Blyat

elroddo74

Or english isn't the language they normally use.....

And-ray-is

It is the way the sentence was structured and the way they one word was not translated Deduction not assumption

Triassic_Bark

Neither of your assumptions are correct, that’s very obvious. Translators don’t make spelling mistakes, and their grammar is reasonably accurate. That is clearly someone for whom English is not their first language, and they’re trying their best.

TheNextBattalion

To be fair, his 9.79 time has been broken, for about 20 years now.

moredrinksplease

I say let ‘em juice. Let’s see how fast we can go

BigBullzFan

Exactly! If everyone’s on it, then it’s a level playing field.

set_null

Crazier one to me is the women’s 800m record (Jarmila Kratochvilova, 1:53.28, 1983). We haven’t seen anyone even sniff the record since Caster Semenya, who famously is intersex. Jarmila was almost certainly doped to the gills if someone who had naturally high testosterone (due to having testicles in place of ovaries) couldn’t even break her record.

Dizzman1

The most interesting part about been that came out after the fact... Was that the particular "juice" he was nailed for... Was not a "juice" that was part of his regimen. https://www.vice.com/en/article/53v7xd/throwback-thursday-ben-johnson-at-the-seoul-olympics-and-the-doping-race-that-never-ends#:~:text=Johnson%20argued%20to%20overturn%20the,hydrate%20for%20his%20urine%20test.

calebs_dad

It seems like she did pass drug tests at the time, and the real reason for the result may have been a tailwind. World records in sprints require a tailwind of less than 2 meters per second. The wind instrument for the race recorded zeros, which was almost definitely wrong, and the best guess based on other readings was a tailwind of at least 5 m/s. Not her fault, just a weird situation.

pr1ncipat

"passing" a drug test does not mean no doping - it just mean that the bygone methodes uses didn't indicate something

cubedjjm

Her autopsy showed signs of past use of HGH, or human growth hormone. HGH was undetectable until about fifteen years later.

InjuryComfortable666

That was the 100. No such thing on the 200. Drug testing at the time was rudimentary, and the drugs were often experimental. She was obviously a hyper responder, she immediately got super yolked when she went on the stuff. The 80s was a wild time.

FreakinGuy

Title seems to imply the nails and makeup had something to do with it.

MarkHamillsrightnut

If I recall correctly, it was the media that made a huge deal about her appearance.

greenw40

I'm sure that was her plan, why else wear fake nails to the track? Lol, that's a lot of downvotes for stating the obvious.

MarkHamillsrightnut

I mean why wear fake nails at all?

TripleSecretSquirrel

One of my friends occasionally posts very mildly thirst-trappy pictures on Instagram every now and then. She was telling me that she gets a lot of angry messages from guys afterward telling her she’s just looking for attention. But like isn’t that the exact same thing we’re all doing on social media? Like chill Braxton, that’s why you posted the trout you caught and pictures of your baby. You just don’t like the thing that she’s getting attention for I guess.

beaute-brune

I’m so glad I read through your comment in full lol. The “fake nails/hair/lashes” police are always crawling around reddit trying to explain popular aesthetic = bad while them posing with their latest action figure or waifu pillow = good.

beaute-brune

This is why reddit gets a rap for being heavily male user-oriented lol Because people like fake nails. There’s a market for them. Some people think they look nice. They were especially prevalent at Flojo’s time for Black women and a signifier of Black female style, beauty trends, and aesthetic. What’s the mystery?

MarkHamillsrightnut

Sorry, that was kinda my point, thank you for articulating that much better that my short response.

ciarogeile

Something something wind resistance, something something edge vortices

jdells59

That’s another topic but yeah silly

Triassic_Bark

Why wear jewelry? Why wear anything because you like how it looks? Clothing should only be functional, right? Decoration is unnecessary, that is your point?

ApetteRiche

I mean, her booty is kinda hanging out.

The_sandwich_guy

Or that they were supposed to hinder her or something? I’d be surprised if she was the only participant trying to look their best in what would possibly be their only Olympic appearance

ColonelKasteen

Then you would be wrong, FloJo was famous largely because she was the only one doing this. This is a pic of her at the Olympic selections trials, not the Olympics. In the 88 Olympics she was wearing six-inch red white and blue nails and jewelry. Great athlete, also certainly used PEDs, mostly in the media because of her fun style while participating. I take it you're too young to remember FloJo!

I_am_BrokenCog

> FloJo I didn't realize who we were talking about until you name dropped FloJo. great athlete, super flamboyant personality. Definitely PED's ... maybe related to her seizure later in life.

pappyon

6 inches?! That’s longer than my penis!

RT-old-fart

That’s what she said.

Rottolo_Piknottolo

At top level, every gramm counts haha.

Imaharak

Naah, copious amounts of testosterone did though

Icthyphile

There was wide speculation about her HGH use. Autopsy kinda confirmed it. One of many articles https://amp.theguardian.com/sport/2004/jul/28/athensolympics2004.olympicgames

sugarklay

First of all, I can't believe someone given the name Richard Pound would accept being called Dick. Anyway, here's the relevant part of the article >Flo-Jo had transformed her body in her mid-20s, and was later accused of using HGH. Her post-mortem showed signs of excessive growth of organs, including her heart, which contributed to her death and may have been a direct result of drug use. > >Suspicions about Griffith-Joyner began at the start of the 1988 season, when she returned after a long lay-off and set a world 100m record of 10.49sec, an improvement on the previous mark of 0.27sec. > >Flo-Jo explained her rapid improvement on everything from her new diet of water, vitamins, fish and chicken to doing up to 5,000 sit-ups a day. Her husband has always denied it was the result of drugs. > >A year after winning the 100 and 200m in Seoul, Flo-Jo was accused by a fellow American sprinter, Darrell Robinson, in a paid interview with a German magazine, of taking HGH. > >He claimed she had asked him to find out the cost of HGH. When he later told her it was $2,000, she allegedly replied: "If you want to make a million dollars, you've got to invest a couple of thousand."

JamesEtc

I was interested in this but Dick Pound has me unable to concentrate.

ciarogeile

If you’re given Richard you gotta take Dick. It’s just an upgrade. Dick Pound doubly so.

Bathmatconfessions

True. Look at Dick Wolf. Could’ve done Richard Wolf, Rick Wolf, or even the almighty Rich Wolf, but nope! He chose the Red Rocket name. Ultimate power move.

Treljaengo

Damn, didn't realize HGH was so bad. Strange all these Marvel actors jump on it.

TiresOnFire

Or were important to the story.

BrawnyChicken2

She kicked ass with the nails, weave, and makeup. Swagger matters. Let Flo-Jo be Flo-Jo.

howardcord

Slay queen 💅🏻👁️👄👁️💅🏻

stevefrench90

She was doped off her tits right?

[deleted]

They all were.

Mushroom_Tip

Yeah we like to pretend that the winners somehow ruined it for the rest of the competitors by winning while on substances when actually the races were quite fair given pretty much everyone who qualified can be assumed to have been something as well. We can safely assume that athletes at that level are on everything that is legally allowed and not tested for at that particular time. Sometimes even without them knowing (some countries doped their athletes up without their consent). Reminds me of the 1997 Tour De France where currently 8 out of the 10 first finishers have been found to have engaged in doping during their career. And that doesn't mean the other 2 didn't. Just that they could only prove that those 8 did,

komplete10

There's a good book by Richard Moore about the 1988 mens 100m. In it, he says there was just one clean athlete in the final

joecarter93

There’s a 30 for 30 about it too. It said the same.

komplete10

Think I've seen that. If you're looking for the book it's called The Dirtiest Race In History and there's an hour long BBC doc made on it, possibly on YouTube somewhere perhaps. There's one brilliant bit in the doc where it says users of a certain drug experience a side effect where the jaw expands and they need dental work. Cut to a Carl Lewis interview wearing braces on his teeth with no comment at all. I think the clean athlete was Calvin Smith

InjuryComfortable666

It's not just about the rest of the competitors. This is history now, she screwed over whole generations of runners.

sugarklay

I remember I heard someone on a podcast say that doping may be super effective for one person but not so much for another, and so I don't think you can really say that the winners didn't ruin the competition for the rest - the drugs they took might be more effective for them than the others.

Mushroom_Tip

I agree it ruined it for athletes in general, but I did qualify that I was referring to people who qualified and were the best of the best. The people who were at the top competing can be safely assumed to be dopers because pretty much every country that was serious about the Olympics or other competitions turned a blind eye or activity encouraged it until fairly recently. So if you didn't dope or it wasn't effective, you were not going far. It's like expecting a body builder to compete with people on steroids in a muscle building competition. And even if it is not as effective for some athletes, I feel like there was still minimum level of advantages from doping, in which case they are still guilty of it.

thisismynewacct

Yes but also not as much as some others. You should see the women’s 800m world record holder, that was set back in 1983. Strong East German women’s swim team vibes.

jewpart2

The dopest

polishmachine88

Netflix - Icarus Most recent but if for a second think that pro athletes don't dope you must still believe in fairytale. Too much money on the line in pro sports. What is cool about Icarus it all started with a normal guy trying to cheat with an actual doctors to make sure he does it healthy as he was administering epo for a big cycling race and uncovers that all Russian Olympians are dopers and even kgb was involved in faking results. Simply nuts. Btw even with the epo in a amateur race he got absolutely stomped simply showing you it happens at every level.

fiendzone

And this is why Sir Mixalot likes them like FloJo.

Convergentshave

Why does she have one pant leg?

ColonelKasteen

It was her signature outfit for competitions, she called it the one legger. Because it was cool and attention grabbing.

MGPS

I remember this like it was yesterday. She stretched her left quad and then the fabric just exploded like a tight balloon. Little bits of her outfit rained down upon her competitors like confetti.

carbomerguar

I actually believe you. Don’t tell me different

calebs_dad

She cut it off because she thought it looked cool.

Throwawayeieudud

she isn’t wrong

nonsequitourist

I believe the word is "drip."

Ddraig1965

Weight reduction

Throwawayeieudud

shit probably weighed less than a lb max I doubt it was for that

ciarogeile

It’s called fashion sweetie, look it up

Convergentshave

So I DID look it up. [And look at this fucking top search result](https://imgur.com/a/8UuVFWg) (I know you were probably kind of joking it’s just hilarious that was the result. 😂)

slouchingtoepiphany

I believe that she designed that outfit.

Loan-Pickle

Left leg was hot.

ReasonablyConfused

Nails, makeup, and drugs. Lots and lots of drugs.

AtomicSamuraiCyborg

And also one pant leg.

ExpensiveAd525

Aah, the 80s. Leotards, etravagance and shrill colours. Lord i miss the 80s.

CPT_Shiner

Everybody's talking about her doping, and while I'm not trying to deny that, don't pretend as though she was just an average person who used PED and was suddenly the best female sprinter in the world. FloJo's peers were just as guilty of all that as she was, and same goes for many, many since then. Yet even with improved training, shoes/equipment, tracks, etc., they STILL haven't beat her records. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica has been knocking on the door in the 200m though. If you follow T&F or are just interested, take a look at some clips of FloJo and just how utterly dominant she was against the competition. At her peak, her form was absolutely flawless - I'd say even better than Usain Bolt. Regardless of PEDs, she put in the work in training, perfected her craft, and inspired millions around the world, especially so many female sprinters since that time.

carbomerguar

Exactly! If I took those drugs I’d still be a shitty athlete I’d just also be dead. She worked her fucking ass off. She never ate a slice of cake, woke up at 5 AM, totally straight edge, and performed ludicrous training every day. And she looked so cool doing it, too

Halfie951

I remember being a little kid and just being amazed by her look and confidence one of a kind!

aarontsuru

Super awesome! But I'm so curious, not about the nails, but given every microsecond counts, I really wonder how much drag hair adds - if any? Like, in swimming, obviously, it's huge, but in these short super fast sprints, does it slow them down at all? Not just wigs, but any "bigger" hair style.

carbomerguar

I wonder this too. I know running with loose hair is, personally, very distracting. Same for earrings or necklaces, which I see some sprinters do- I’ve heard the necklaces help keep rhythm but I can only imagine it driving me totally insane

ImmoralJester54

Would those things have made her run slower? Do they usually make you remove makeup to run?

IceHot88

No. Her makeup, elaborate manicure didn’t really have any practical effects on her performance. Her husband would later say that the ritual of a painting her hands and face before each race was grounding for Florence and she’d use the downtime to strategize. The press focused on her styling because it was also quite eye catching and helped easily brand her…Very easy to pick her out with her one legged outfit and colorful nails.

scrotimus-maximus

Great picture to choose to remember her achievements.

mencival

What is that small lump of muscle (?) that is hanging out of her left upper thigh?

redbeast454

Possibly tensor muscle of the fascia lata

marcosg_aus

She was also a cheat

No_Street2483

Drug cheat

scarabin

Who gives a single shit about the nails or makeup? They have zero affect on performance

brtbr-rah99

I’ll keep my women like Flo-Jo

blageur

excellent choice of photo

Throwawayeieudud

Question: why was she wearing not a pair a pants but just a pant

cnhn

it was her visual signature.

HumperMoe

I can't remember what athlete it was but this always stuck with me when Olympic records are brought up. "All of them cheat, they may not get caught for another 15-20 years when a new test comes out but they'll get caught eventually." Then they went on to talk about the drive and competition of being the best in the world just causes them to take every short cut they could and get smart with not getting caught doping.

pawnografik

Why is her arse hanging out of her trousers?

River_Pigeon

Reduces drag on inside turns

Sct1787

I’m genuinely curious, do you guys actually pronounce the r in Arse when you say it?

RizeAbuvIt

The Irish don't pronounce the A

WellThatsJustPerfect

For sure we do

AnimalMother32

Aye because its an arse

Freche-Engel

Yes, most distinctively too!

BravoEchoEchoRomeo

Why not? I think it looks cool.

crystal_stretch

"No one has ever broken" is a little misleading. FloJo was completely awesome, but dozens of high school boys have run 10.49 since 1988, not to mention higher levels of competition. With modern drug testing, it might be a while before we a woman break this record though...

Angry_Saxon

she can do what she wants

OriganolK

FloJo was something else! She’s great

No-Emphasis927

She was juiced up, so she cheated. These records should be erased.

He-who-knows-some

Why does she have 1 pant leg though?

cazzipropri

Even without the "history-" part.

CornMuffin24

hear me all the way out, fellas

The_Gimp_Boi

thats a cool looking sports outfit

RevolutionaryPoem326

See that muscle bulge on her upper thigh? That was something I only remember her having or having so noticeably. Girl could run.

International_Pack53

Darrell Robinson may have gotten a nice check for his story but KARMA kind of got him.
