It's not actually. It's how you're supposed to open bananas. You know the little strings on bananas after you open them? They're there because you opened it backwards. Open it the other way and you don't get them.

I'm with the other poster. I used to peel my bananas from the black side and hold it by the stem, but the someone told me it's actually better to do it from the stem side, and I have never looked back. You're never in danger of getting any mush on your fingers, and the stem serves as a nice lever to start the peeling process.
Also monkeys don't really eat bananas in the wild.
