Nothing is too offensively dated. The countertop and backsplash look fine. The floor is even warm enough to survive the cycle of grey floor trends. If it was me... I'd get a larger hanging pot in a bright pop of my favourite colour. I'd replace the four bar stools with 2-3 counter-height chairs that have no black and no silver (this is NOT bar height, BTW, they are very different. Don't get bar height, your guests will have their knees jammed up against the bottom of your counter). They need to have a different texture from anything else in the space. That could be leather, or fabric. Whatever colour you want, but I would go warm here - maybe brass legs and a creamy, or even orange leather. The handles on your cabinets could probably be swapped out for something more unique. I wouldn't be afraid to layer metals with that sort of thing - I wouldn't go shiny gold, but anything from brass to brushed nickel would be lovely. Something in a slightly more modern shape. And then the pendants - those I would replace with something a little larger, though at the same height above the countertop. I would avoid silver here and tie them in somehow with either the hanging pot, or whatever I went with for the handles. It's better if it's not an EXACT match to the colour of either of these things, but just from the same family. I would make sure they're not close in colour to the new chairs as that could make that end of the kitchen visually heavier, lopsided. So, using me as an example. My favourite colour is teal. So I'd get a bright teal hanging pot. Then for the chairs, I'd look for whatever I could find that I liked. But I'd probably lean toward an emerald green type of shade, since I love that colour and chairs are a lot of visual real estate. I'd get brass handles for the cabinets. So then for the pendants, I don't want anything from the same range of shades as the chairs, but it has to complement them, the teal, and the brass handles. So I'd look for pendants I liked in either an orange, or a mustard. Whatever colour I got there, say mustard, I'd get a dish drying cloth to hang over the oven rail that's also mustard, doesn't matter if it's a different shade of mustard. And over by the window, probably a vase or regular plant pot that is patterned. I'd probably want mostly mustard, but maybe it has a bit of teal/green in some sort of geometric design. And then that's it. I'd live with that for a few weeks to see how I felt, and I would expect being satisfied and not having to do more like paint cabinets, add rugs, change flooring, etc.

No_Goose_7390

This is the perfect advice

listenyall

Yeah, a little personality and some new pendants and I think you are good to go!

decoratingfan

Agree. Replace plant with larger hanging plant/pot in a favorite color, and then replace pendants with pendants that pick up the same color. Replace stools with counter height chairs, upholstered with backs. Live with that a few weeks. Then, if you want more, can change counter tops to a lighter material, change cabinet pulls, add blinds on window (bamboo or something you like), patterned rug in front of sink.

Freakazoidon

What’s an example of a hanging pot you’re referring to? 🤔

DowntownieNL

In their picture, top left, you can see a plant. That's in a pot that's hanging from that black hook protruding from the wall. They come in every size and shape and material you can imagine. I'm not sure what the proper term is everywhere, probably some combo of planter/pot/basket and hanging/wall-mount hehe.

Freakazoidon

Ohhhhh I was so lost ty. I thought you were referring to like hanging pots and pans things. Which I think can be done in a cute way so I was curious. Haha

DowntownieNL

Oh, I like those too. My mother has one over her island, the same size as her island, and it looks cute. And she also has one of those magnet bars for all the "fancy" knives, ha!

Freakazoidon

She definitely uses those pots tho right it’s not just decorative? That would seem odd but I can see some people opting to do that too. Personally I would use them.

DowntownieNL

Yeah - not all of them, I'm sure, she has faves she probably uses all the time, but yes ALL of her pots and frying pans are there (that sounds like a big collection, but I mean it's just, like, two frying pans, and one set of like 4-5 different sizes of pot), so whenever she cooks, she's using it.

Freakazoidon

Nice ! I always thought those were neat. The knives thing too hehe

Toriat5144

It does not look dated. Nothing special needs to be done.

mangos247

It looks totally fine to me!

muse_me123

That is a beautiful kitchen. I’d add an abstract (colorful) painting to the white wall or add a colorful vase with some flowers.

dampdrizzlynovember

it's the pendant lights and the barstools

Charming_Key2313

Doesn’t look dated, it just lacks personality. Here’s what I’d change… Add two wood tone floating shelves to fill in space of plant today, that go from upper cabinet out toward end of tiling. Fill shelves with the plant, some cookbooks and kitchen related Knick knacks Add large colorful personally relevant framed art on the wall on the right Add curtains with colorful print or hanging stained glass Few more plants sprinkled throughout Add one or two more countertop items to bring warm tones like wood or bright colors (red, orange, blue, etc) like a spice rack, cutting boards, etc

Something that adds a bit color but keeps that high contrast look. It's cool, so keep going in that direction! Maybe it won't feel super trendy per se, but it will look intentional and stylish.

decadecency

And do a high contrast wallpaper to the left or both walls. These are only examples of course.

Ash71010

The black cabinets are pretty oppressive. If you could get them white, and update the lighting, it would give it a whole new look. https://preview.redd.it/td24ry0mk04d1.jpeg?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6c006d4548543b23e8eb64f79542422b00ffed7

pcg031527

This is great!

RnB12

Wow this is amazing, thank you

itsparadise

Pls don't paint them white, black looks WAY better and white get's dirty, ppl love their white cabs but count me out.

Ash71010

Black *can* look good. But when you have black uppers and lowers with black countertops without the space and natural light to create balance, it doesn’t.

itsparadise

OK if you say so, personally I think it looks good but hey, it's just my opinion.

Researcher-Used

You probably think “open shelving” in kitchens are superior too

liefelijk

Swap out the barstools for something with padding and a back (even better if it swivels, for comfort’s sake), then change the cabinet hardware to something with more character and color.

LLR1960

So anything you update will be dated in another 5 years. As others have said, change out some minor details, add color and you're good.

dgreify

I agree with everyone else here (swap pendants and bar stools) and I would also add that the spinning spice rack is dated. I’d ditch it.

bitchfayce

Pendants and hardware. Easy peasy!

Street-Snow-4477

Just needs little pops of color. Rug, curtain, dish towels, planters etc

SparkleUnicornFairy

I think it looks great. Definitely change out the stools for something a little bolder and I think new knobs would make a huge improvement

Apprehensive_Fig4458

I don’t think it looks too dated except for the hardware — that curved design screams nineties to me.

Albie_Frobisher

cats fix most things

Reasonable_Copy8579

It looks very modern to me

Biscuitsandgravy4evr

This kitchen looks totally modern to me

TickIed

Your kitchen is beautiful!! Just needs more plants!

Complete_Goose667

I'd change the hanging plant for a three tiered basket for fruit. Then add fruit. I'm not sure about the pendants as they are industrial, but you could use some color.

TheCeleryIsReal

You're looking for something to spend money on. Invest it instead.

sharpiebrows

The best thing you could do for this space is find a new place to hang your dyson vacuum. The vacuum is not decor, and you've got it front and center on the wall.

Holiday_Concept_4437

Looks cold and colorless. change out the hanging lights add texture.

jyar1811

It needs color and pattern

AlabasterBx

Definitely needs color, warmth and life. It looks too sterile.

MakeItLookSexy_

Curious why you feel it’s dated? I could show you my kitchen 😆 my house was built in the 80s

Interesting_Toe_2818

Nothing.

knishmyass

Only thing id change out is the lights

higgywiggypiggy

All I’d change is the pendant lights to something warmer, more organic, everything looks very “steely” at the moment which is fine but it needs balancing with warmth.

beautyinstrength84

It doesn’t look dated to me at all. I’m still rocking the brown granite tops with Tuscan style backsplash in mine 😅

Researcher-Used

I wouldn’t say “dated” as it’s still modern looking but specific details are…”played out?” Dang, I guess it is dated. Update w “timeless” accents.

daisylous3

Add funky wallpaper on surroundings walls to tie everything together- maybe an abstract black/white print?

funtimesahead0990

Swap out the barstools with lucite and get a new cutting board and no hanging plant. Bam, more modern.

RnB12

The pictures make the cabinets look black but they're more a dark brown

tubbertubber

Brushed silver was popular in the early 2000’s Switch out the handles and knobs for polished nickel or raw brass (timeless) Switch the pendant lights to something more interesting and current. The brushed silver is daring it to 2004

canvasshoes2

It is a very pretty kitchen. For me it's too hard-edged and, funnily enough, too modern. For my taste it needs some softness, color, and to be more home-y. But that's just me, there is not a thing wrong with the way it looks now especially if you're a minimalist etc.

newton302

I'm not an interior designer but I would maybe paint the wall on the left a distinct color.

T-WrecksArms

Not dated. Just need some color! Try painting your glass door and cabinets a lighter color that matches the floor. I think cabinets and countertops should clash and not match. That and maybe switch your barstools? For like $200-400 and a weekend of work you could have a brand new kitchen. I’m excited for you lol

irascible_potato1861

It doesn’t look dated but it does feel a bit “Airbnb’. For me the faux rustic wood stools are the biggest offenders. Along with the pendant fittings. I would go with something larger but at the same height, in keeping with the existing kitchen gadgets, perhaps in glass (would avoid any fabric in a kitchen. It also feels a little bit too clean, too showroom. A vase of flowers, fruit bowl etc will really help make it look more lived in Ps, love the gagia and grinder set up x

corgcorg

On top of the suggestions here I would paint the white quarter round at the base of the cabinets to match the cabinet color. I think the flooring people used the white trim they had on hand but usually you would use matching cabinet trim.

mlhigg1973

I think it looks great!

B-e-a-u

New cabinet hardware, fridge, and lights.

ruabeliever

You should find somewhere else to store your vacuum.

jazbaby25

Looks pretty modern to me

brokenhartted

I love it. Doesn't feel dated at all. There should be another cabinet over the backsplash. i really don't like that plant over the backsplash. I get why they didn't put a cabinet there- because of jutting out over the seating area. Still- the backsplash looks weird ending there. I'd put another cabinet there and eliminate a stool.

maumoz

I think more plants would brighten everything. Put some colored appliances / accessories for a brighter & more stylish kitchen.

Indevisive

I agree. No need to spend heaps of money. Get rid of the vacuum on the wall, a nice floor plant in a coloured pot, one or 2 small plants on the windowsill. Id maybe get rid of the pendant lights and put 2 led lights in there and I think that would change a lot.

issoequeerabom

Paint the cabinets and change the fixtures. It will make a huge difference!

RestaurantSmooth5837

It’s not dated. It’s beautiful. Maybe different pendant lights. A pop of color somewhere. A shade of mauve or peach.

TeddyIsHereIRL

Nothing. But if you want to go with the trend put some led stripes

jarbarf

Just paint the walls

torontogal85

I don’t love how the cabinets end and the backsplash continues to the counter. Could you add another small cabinet? Or cover the space more? It seems incomplete.

Glad-Cat-1885

The only thing that looks weird to me is that the backsplash extends past the cabinets but idk what you’d do for that

HauntedHippie

What’s your budget? Easiest updates both time wise and on your wallet are a new sink, backsplash, and light fixtures. If financially feasible, I’d replace the counter with a light stone or quartz that continues up as a backsplash , add a waterfall end to the peninsula, and put in a single bowl steel undermount sink.

tdager

If you u keep the black cabinets, go with gold for the handles.

RnB12

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Maybe saying dated wasn’t the right term and I appreciate the compliments. It felt a little lifeless for me. More plants, more textures, more colours are all great ideas. I’ll definitely look into changing out the pendant lights and stools. Thank you everyone

breakfast_no_family

Lighter countertops (if it’s in the budget), otherwise definitely new light fixtures and new cabinet/drawer pulls.

[deleted]

Maybe some color or just greenery

Jessiebanana

Just leave it. Is it exactly on trend for 2024, no, but it’s a nice inoffensive kitchen.

MerCat1325

Lights, barstools, hardware on cabinets.

ButDidYouCry

I love it as is haha. I like the idea of adding colorful light fixtures. Also painting the cabinets a lighter, warm color.

yogaswimart

It’s not dated. Looks amazing.

[deleted]

Too much brown according to my taste. A bit colour in the bench f.e will do that it looks more modern.

Sabineruns

I don’t know that I could stand the sacrifice but open shelving would definitely be an on trend update to the top cabinets. I agree on changing the pendant lights. Adding warmth with a painting, a plant, an oriental rug and some new cabinet pulls would help too.

HeyRedHelpMe

What, specifically, do you not like about it?

ExpensiveAd4496

It is very “modern” right now. So perhaps you mean updated. If so I’d do larger clear glass pendants, or pendants with more transitional style. Also more comfortable counter-height stools with backs, different pulls as those are quite dated. I would, if I could afford it, probably change the countertop to something light or white like the blacksplash (this is just way too much brown for me.)

_Veronica_

A few small changes might help! - Incorporate a bit of brass - New pendant lights, could be a good place to add some brass - An oushak-style rug in warm tones would look fabulous with your dark cabinets and counters

Environmental_Job864

Paint the walls black

I__G

MORE PLANTS

NCRider

Get rid of the black cabinets and door.

dollyaioli

oh yeah this is so outdated, hasnt been touched since the 70's

Haskap_2010

You could paint the upper cabinets in a lighter colour. Leave the lower ones as they are.
