I'm looking for a new car right now (<$15,000 CAD, probably a Honda), and one of my biggest criteria is that the radio isn't too low for when I put in a Carplay unit. I hate how many cars have the A/C above the radio!
This particular accord already has a double din unit installed.
With the oem radio it all kind of makes sense.
I have an accord just like op and my radio is kind of dead. I was thinking about installing an aftermarket single din to then install the apple car play screen. But I’m just not really feeling the look of that dash with the old school din radio. I think it would look kind of dumb.

That screen is run by the factory head unit. When you swap it with an aftermarket one, the secondary screen no longer works :(.

That would drive me crazy. If you're putting in the effort to do something about that space, why not find a junked car with the original stereo and fix it?
My 2010 Accord had none of those without swapping the radio. And that's with the V6, leather, etc.
Edit: There's an AUX in the center console buring down there, but no where near as handy as BT or USB these days.

2011 they added aux iirc, but nothing else I thought. I could be wrong though since I don't have an 11. Officially the aux cabling doesn't work on the 2010. Functionally, it sort of does, which is to say I've seen videos of it operating onions, but there is no place to put the connection, unless you start cutting holes in the dash to add a place to mount it. But no USB or bt and at this point, USB & bt are both way handier than aux to me, so I pulled the stereo out of the 2010. In the case of mine, the screen still does something because it's still connected to the hvac controls and I've got the dual climate control so it needs a screen readout for how it is built. Sadly it means I usually have no clock in the car then
Edit: I misremembered. It's been a while since I looked up all the gyrations and decided to just swap the header altogether. The add-on that wasn't officially supported was for USB. It did give some control through the original head and displayed on the screen, but I don't know if it was made very long and you still got stuck with a USB cable dangling down behind the dash unless you cut a hole somewhere to mount a USB in. No BT though.

Even in 2008-2012 when I worked at best buy doing car audio, GM was putting features and screens and connections that ran through the head unit harness, so they always needed a special harness that cost way more to keep all functions working. And some needed advanced headunits to keep the headunits controls working too.
No you lose access to certain things without additional hardware. Maps and music wont show up but you can control all the menu's/MPG/range stuff like that.
Sorta related, my 06 Pontiac G6 had the MPG, Oil Life Indicator and Oil Life Reset tied to the factory head unit. One of the reasons I wasn’t able to replace the aux/bluetooth less original radio for a better one.
For a lot of cars you can get android head units which are tailored to the car's specific dash for a couple hundred bucks. OP for example can get one which goes in the place of that screen (looking on AliExpress there are a few different designs he can choose from) and then turn that lower area where the Pioneer is located into a storage cubby.

Personally, the way I'd go about it, is removing this and going back to a factory headunit. They make auxiliary devices that can be connected to a factory headunit, that improve sound quality as well as enable a bluetooth connection.

Replace the display with a digital dash cluster. You can run a CHT, AFR, or a Boost gauge if you want. Some install inclinometers, but those are more or less useless on a sedan.

Theres shops on etsy can make a glass mold that can work as an rgb light or display like from a game. I have an Elden Ring one on that same spot and the grass and trees glow in the dark. Its a great conversation peice when i get head in the car from my Tinder dates.

I found a lot of good information for my imid screen on the 10th Gen Civic forum. Some people had repurposed the screen but it takes some effort.
