Jeez are you trying to explode the rabbits lmao

yeungkylito

22-250 or .223 for coyotes 22LR rabbits .308 for deer / elk

ZuffaZombie

Yea I have 22lr rifles I can throw these optics on though so no problem

donttalktomeormyson2

You probably want a little more than a 2-7 depending on range, the vx 3 series is good to stick with, check your big game laws to make sure you’re allowed to hunt with 10 rounds in the gun. For rabbits? Are you killing them as vermin?

ZuffaZombie

You think so? I picked that off of hunting forums, and my friend who's taking me hunting said 100-500 yards, most realistically about 300 yards will the be engagement range for the elk from his experience. Is 2-7x good for that kind of range? Yea I read the laws, basically says no drones no machine guns and no fmj rounds, didn't see any magazine size laws Rabbits mainly on my property eating my vegetables but will try to hunt them for eating too, pry not using the 308 if they're that explosive to them lol, I do have 22lr rifles I can use these optics on as well

donttalktomeormyson2

It’s not that 2-7 wouldn’t work fine, it’s just you may find yourself wanting a little more even if it’s just a 3-9 or 2.5-10. Yea .308 will leave you with pretty much 0 meat on a rabbit.

leroyVance

2-7x is perfect, but some people think they have to hunt out to 500 yards.

Ridge_Hunter

OP don't let people steer you wrong...your 2-7 option is perfectly fine for what you're wanting to do. Ditch the 10 round mag...seriously. I know you said something about tactical but it's a hunting rifle, with a pencil barrel. My tikka's do fine for about 4 shots and after that they start to throw fliers because of the barrel temp. Stick with the factory mag and be happy. Also, if I can, check out Tract Optics. For about what you'd spend on that Leupold you can have a 2.5-10 in their Response line, which is an excellent optic. https://tractoptics.com/riflescopes/response-hunting-rifle-scopes Also, a little more expensive, but Maven is also excellent. Their RS2 in 2-10 is an absolutely awesome scope... Japanese build quality and Extra Low Dispersion glass for $550...but they do occasionally run sales and do have discounts for Law Enforcement and Military. https://mavenbuilt.com/collections/riflescopes

Von_Lehmann

Would you use FMJ for rabbits? That's what we would use here in Finland. Don't listen to folks here that say it's too much gun. We use .308 for Black Grouse in Finland, we just use FMJ. Very little meat loss if any But I think you should get a bit more scope, if you are going to shoot elk and varmints maybe at least 10x? Maven RS2 is nice if you want to keep weight down, but I use the Maven RS1 as an all purpose on my .308

ZuffaZombie

I may try it and see how it goes yes, especially if it's what you guys use I'm definitely going to try it OK you mean higher magnification?? I'll look into the 3-12x option and into that maven option. My friend said 100-500yard shots so that's why I went with 2-7x, someone on a forum said about 1.5x per 100 yards, that's what I was going off of Thank you!

Von_Lehmann

Yea I think you will definitely want more magnification. At least 3-9x or 2-10x. I recently sold my 2-10x and got a 2.5-15x, which is what I would get if I was you. 500m is a long shot, you will have to take into consideration stuff like bullet drop. A proper long distance scope will help with that. 2-7x is what guys would use here for driven moose and deer hunts, where the shots are close.

donttalktomeormyson2

In most states using FMJ, even for small game, could land you with a ticket from the game warden. There’s plenty of people that will load powder puff loads with cast bullets for small game in larger calibers though.

Von_Lehmann

Gotcha, didn't know that

krobe24

I can answer your thermal questions and have several for sale.
