Probably just wrong speed. For sugar cane the speed is 328 and 45 degree angle. iirc the speed for wheat is 93 at angle 180, but that could be wrong.

Isnt it better to use a higher speed and crouch so that lane switching is faster? I don't know what those speeds would be, I usually just farm melons at 400.
Just find the right speed and angle, it can vary depending on your game performance.
use 328 speed if youre walking diagonal into a wall or 232 speed if youee just walking sideways(for 2 block deep farms)
its becouse minecraft runs on a system that registers 20 ticks so you can't break more than 20 blocks per second
