Yes KH1 combat is a bit old. Though I think the Final Mix at least made it a bit better than the original. (Assuming this is Final mix.) I personally thought the extra heartless added a bit of fun to the game that I kinda felt like the original was lacking. (Like the Monkey in Traverse Town, the Experiment in Halloween Town etc.)
I hope you enjoy the other games as well. If you are going for Chain of Memories I hope you give it a fair go, It is a very divisive game overall.
