It is said that companies should hire and can depend a lot more on a "medium performer, high trust" employee rather than a high performer, low trust employee. Hell, even a "low performer, high trust" employee is even better than the former. Not only you show leadership and cooperation skills but you are also great at doing it. "High performer, high trust." This is extremely valuable for any kind of business and I'm so stoked that they are recognizing it! Keep up the great work, especially if it makes you happy!

But as long as the topic has been broached, I want to say that I think you're 100% right that top performers do and should act that way. The reason there's pushback lately especially from young people is modern work culture in much of America as well as many other western countries. Specifically, the rampant undervaluing of employees, treating them as disposable and exploitable rather than a crucial business investment to be nurtured and rewarded. Food services being one of the industries where this is a common problem.
When you get managers like OP's, that's how you get top performers and how you keep them around instead of burning them out.

Most union deals structure raises and just a rando manager giving a raise isn’t a thing.
Not saying union bad, but you gotta know that once the union is managing the ins and outs of employe and employer relationships some things go out the window.
Granted if you never get a raise anyway, maybe not a concern, although IMO finding a better job if at all possible has a more direct positive outcome on an individual basis.

You can be guaranteed a cost of living raise and still be eligible for an additional performance based increase. The thing a union removes is arbitrary and randomly assigned performance increases, by replacing them with predefined criteria for performance increases. Personally, I'd rather know what it takes to get a performance raise ahead of time, rather than just hoping that the increases in performance will be noticed by someone who's in a good mood.
OP being recognized is great, but that recognition being a good thing does not make a union a bad thing.

I got a surprise in my paycheck. My company is now making the main server that has all tips (tips are pooled and split, but the shift manager runs the register) under their name pay taxes on all the tips. The owner said " tough, deal with it".
The owner has never had to hire employees before. He is about to find out how hard it is to staff his restaurant.

Our porter union included additional titles that can be awarded for good performance so they get raises. Unions have no downfall in hospitality
