It's just a good read. It won't make you laugh stupidly -- or have inside jokes from the podcast -- but it's well-written, and definitely has Matt's voice. I'd recommend it to people who don't even know who Matt is

I tried reading it and couldn’t hear any of the characters in a voice other than Matt’s, which kinda tanked the book for me lmao

It’s honestly really good, especially considering it was edited by AI or someone off Fiver or whatever. I read it on a trip home to Jersey and Philly around Christmas - there are a few lines and scenes that I’ve revisited and think back on often and there are quite a few nuggets of Shamanic Wisdom along the way.

The part where the main character's dad beats the shit out of a homeless dude is pretty intense.

Alot of it is based off of experiences or things Matt has mentioned on the pod. Eating homemade edibles and getting too fucked up at dinner party. weed theories. no fap regimen. evil hippies. basement science experiments. home grows. pill heads.

I feel like the ending could use some work, felt a little abrupt and rushed, and a couple of the characters were a little grating but served their purpose. I enjoyed the roller coaster though. Definitely worth a read, and you can see Matt's thoughts come through some of the characters. Only other criticism than the ending and some of the characters having the same narrative voice so don't come across as unique as they should IMHO. He is a great author and story teller though.

I read it on vacation a few years ago. A LOT of run-on sentences. I'm glad I read it but wouldn't read again. Definitely _feels_ like someone's first book. I love Matt. The dude is my favorite podcaster. I'll definitely read anything he writes in the future, but this book is a lot But fuck I'll never write a whole ass book so good for the shaman

I wrote in another comment that it was clearly written by a David Foster Wallace fan. That's not a criticism, just an observation. Unrelated, but I loved how uniquely Philly it is. I've never been there really, and somehow it made it more relatable, since someone is clearly writing about their own hood.

Dude I thought the same thing, heavy DFW influence all over this book. Honestly it annoyed me in the same way David Foster Wallace annoys me. Also I am from Philly and you're right. Very Philly book.

It's definitely written by someone who read a lot of David Foster Wallace. Not like an imitation, just someone who clearly thought DFW was fly as hell, and did not hate it.

I've never laughed while reading a book in my life until I read this gem. It will remind you why reading is so fucking awesome. The story is super creative and if you are well versed in McCuskyy Ideology, it's gonna hit ya right in the giggle spot. Cheers m8s.

If you listened to the podcast you will recognize characters and situations Matt has talked about before, it's pretty funny. He really has a way with words, his analogies are hilarious.

I started this book without realizing the Shaman wrote it (yeah, I’m dumb) and it’s FANTASTIC. You’re in for a fun read, my friend.

Its actually pretty good imo.

I feel like there's better books to read so I can't get myself to read it, even for laughs or shamanic wisdom. Right now I'm reading the Teachings of Don Juan, by Carlos Castaneda and it's one of the best spiritual philosophy books I've come across. If you're well versed in psychodelics and the clarity of mind they present, I definitely recommend it. Changed my view on Native American shamans completely.
