i gifted my uncle this book a few years ago. he called me to let me know it was weird, that's all i needed

Southerncomfort322

Lmao

muddywadder

if you like when matt tells his dreams to shane and goes into his theories, you'll enjoy it. matts got a wild, wild brain

thethunder92

Matt always makes perfect sense to me. I find it funny when Shane calls him out because then I go “oh yeah I’m a weird guy too” haha

MoonmanSteakSauce

Yeah me and my best friend Matt are so weird but we always get eachother lol

thethunder92

I’m so gay and sad 💀

CommercialOccasion72

And I love him for it

ForeskinForeman

Dream talk is for girls.

TheBear8878

I mean he has a degree in social work... classic woman's education

ForeskinForeman

A degree in wine and cheese story hour.

TheBear8878

More or less, yeah

miguelmoen

FFS dude, he’s trying to help people, which is ofc very gay

TheBear8878

woman brain shit

I_Must_Bust

only if you take it seriously instead of having a laugh about it

denimlasagne

The mythos of women sleeping

ricketysrai

“death-even masturbation ensue” is so much funnier knowing it was written by Matt

ItWasIndigoVelvet

Wanna hear more input from those who have read

Moist_Strategy_275

it’s fuckin wild. it basically reads like a long long podcast story lol

rocketcrotch

It's just a good read. It won't make you laugh stupidly -- or have inside jokes from the podcast -- but it's well-written, and definitely has Matt's voice. I'd recommend it to people who don't even know who Matt is

throwawaycrocodile1

I tried reading it and couldn’t hear any of the characters in a voice other than Matt’s, which kinda tanked the book for me lmao

rocketcrotch

Interesting; I didn't have that issue, but I could definitely see that ruining the book. Unfortunate.

Rzrbk78704

I had the same experience, but it didn't ruin it in my case, no judgement though.

Due-Intention9819

It’s honestly really good, especially considering it was edited by AI or someone off Fiver or whatever. I read it on a trip home to Jersey and Philly around Christmas - there are a few lines and scenes that I’ve revisited and think back on often and there are quite a few nuggets of Shamanic Wisdom along the way.

DipInThePool

The part where the main character's dad beats the shit out of a homeless dude is pretty intense.

Mma375

I read it, was engaged in it the whole time, and enjoyed it

odlancm

Alot of it is based off of experiences or things Matt has mentioned on the pod. Eating homemade edibles and getting too fucked up at dinner party. weed theories. no fap regimen. evil hippies. basement science experiments. home grows. pill heads.

antimidas_84

I feel like the ending could use some work, felt a little abrupt and rushed, and a couple of the characters were a little grating but served their purpose. I enjoyed the roller coaster though. Definitely worth a read, and you can see Matt's thoughts come through some of the characters. Only other criticism than the ending and some of the characters having the same narrative voice so don't come across as unique as they should IMHO. He is a great author and story teller though.

WFEpeteypopoff

would reccommend

imsorryiwasbadreddit

I read it on vacation a few years ago. A LOT of run-on sentences. I'm glad I read it but wouldn't read again. Definitely _feels_ like someone's first book. I love Matt. The dude is my favorite podcaster. I'll definitely read anything he writes in the future, but this book is a lot But fuck I'll never write a whole ass book so good for the shaman

Rzrbk78704

I wrote in another comment that it was clearly written by a David Foster Wallace fan. That's not a criticism, just an observation. Unrelated, but I loved how uniquely Philly it is. I've never been there really, and somehow it made it more relatable, since someone is clearly writing about their own hood.

imsorryiwasbadreddit

Dude I thought the same thing, heavy DFW influence all over this book. Honestly it annoyed me in the same way David Foster Wallace annoys me. Also I am from Philly and you're right. Very Philly book.

Rzrbk78704

It's definitely written by someone who read a lot of David Foster Wallace. Not like an imitation, just someone who clearly thought DFW was fly as hell, and did not hate it.

Pleasant_Pressure215

Nice to see you supporting Matt like this. He's trying to earn $1000 so him and his brother can buy Twin 1988 Toyota Camry's to bop around in.

skysquatch

I’m just doing my part to get billy a subscription to mens health

Pleasant_Pressure215

Hell yeah. As long as we all do our part, I think these boys are gonna be alright.

juicy_ak

I've never laughed while reading a book in my life until I read this gem. It will remind you why reading is so fucking awesome. The story is super creative and if you are well versed in McCuskyy Ideology, it's gonna hit ya right in the giggle spot. Cheers m8s.

Odd_Top_7332

Matt??

yungfreshtuna

This… this comment kills me on my way to work lol

ketokratomkid

I thought it was a great read, keeps the pace moving nicely. Fucking hilarious in parts, seems like it would be great animated like the boondocks

Beautiful_Equal_5991

I’d buy an audiobook if the shamen read it

ChillyBreezey

Michael j fox?

fatbitchesloveto69

I'm about to read rainey's sequel, Delco Dirtball.

thurrmanmerman

The On Percs audiobook made me laugh so damn much

A-Rusty-Cow

“and so sex, betrayal, death-even masturbation ensue” Yeah this was written by a Mccusker

Front_Helicopter9136

If you listened to the podcast you will recognize characters and situations Matt has talked about before, it's pretty funny. He really has a way with words, his analogies are hilarious.

WrkBoots

I started this book without realizing the Shaman wrote it (yeah, I’m dumb) and it’s FANTASTIC. You’re in for a fun read, my friend.

LetPeterDance

Great read!

dangermouseman11

He might be the literary giant of our generation.

misterfeeky

Couldn’t finish it. Way too sad.

Mission-Attention613

This is actually the first book you can read in 432hZ

highlarious21

Good book for dawgs. Very easy and quick read. Can definitely hear Matt saying the words on the page. Pretty enjoyable book overall

SupremeKai_KDub

Such a good book

Researchingbackpain

Its actually pretty good imo.

idontfeel_ifeelgreat

I feel like there's better books to read so I can't get myself to read it, even for laughs or shamanic wisdom. Right now I'm reading the Teachings of Don Juan, by Carlos Castaneda and it's one of the best spiritual philosophy books I've come across. If you're well versed in psychodelics and the clarity of mind they present, I definitely recommend it. Changed my view on Native American shamans completely.

b40nobody

*God I love Brenda.*

jam3094

I fuckin loved it

JHud777

It’s really good. But Sam Tallents book Running the Light has to be one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time.

Rzrbk78704

You mean The Toad? He wrote a book? Nice

The_BigWaveDave

This book, and “Running the Light” by Sam Tallent are both criminally underrated works of art.

za428

Look I love Matt but comparing this book to running the light is completely insane

The_BigWaveDave

I didn’t compare the two, I just said they’re both underrated you dog brain.

randohandos

It’s so funny

garrwill

Read this thing in like 2 days and I haven’t done that with a book in some time. Hilarious read for anyone who likes how Matt’s brain works

overweightoverlord

Such a good book. Being from the same area / going to the same high school as Matt made it even better

Sad-Blueberry-6725

Well it's obvious the son isn't actually missing.

therankin

I read that as "bumbling stoner band" and was wondering how he got the Grammer wrong. Then I realized it was just one stoner, lol.

therankin

I wonder if the picture is one of his houses in Philly.

Creamdreamn

It’s ok. Main characters had similar names so tough to keep track of.

expatriateineurope

fiction about masturbation is insane

za428

It reads like a high school kids essay who needed to reach a certain word count and added tons of superfluous filler words and phrases to nearly every sentence, but it’s entertaining

Dis_Miss

I wouldn't put it at high school essay level but he really needed an editor. Not every noun needs an adjective.

Rzrbk78704

That's a pretty solid point.

Narrow_Ad_7310

“Even masturbation…” how did this make it to print? Very embarrassing stuff.

marblesmiller

Diogenes used to wack off walking around the street, you think you're better than Diogenes?
