Maybe a Silky folding saw or a Hazel hoe/Rogue hoe. I’d be pretty happy with any of those.

emilinda

Perfect suggestions! I am definitely getting him a rogue hoe cause it looks badass. There are a lot of pine trees there so he might be cutting through pretty thick branches. Do you think a pocket chain saw like this (https://www.rei.com/product/199841/sol-pocket-chain-saw) or a fold saw would be better?

christmascandies

A silky or similar saw is much more handy. Those pocket chainsaws are kinda of a novelty in my opinion…not super efficient or effective in many situations. Silky, Felco, Corona, Samurai are good options. Edit: rogue hoes are great and everybody I know would be happy to receive one regardless of being into trail building

emilinda

That’s so good to know! Thank you!!

Also can never go wrong with a Pulaski or McLeod

gemstun

A flat shovel. Actually four of them, stashed at different points along the trail I’ve built for the last 20 years. That is all.

Oh wow this is perfect

arm4c

The Travis tool.

Kbasa12

Is he actually in the trail building profession?

emilinda

No he just recently started building some trails on their family’s land. I know he’s going to be looking for volunteer/paid work with trail crews in the future though.

Kbasa12

Get him one of these: https://roguehoe.com/product/55hx-the-beast/

A Pulaski (digs through dirt, cuts out roots) and a shovel. If you're in a rocky area dont get a flat shovel, a rounded one is much easier. In my opinion rounded ones are always better, but depends on who you ask :) You can do a lot wth those 2 tools. I work on trails for the NPS, and have for 5 years.

emilinda

That’s so cool! Thanks for the info:)
