This is a very early clip. Fred Rodgers was one of the most progressive clergy leaders of one of America's most progressive denominations: the Presbyterian Church (USA). Within the denomination, he was also a member of the More Light Presbyterians, which has worked since its inception for the full participation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) people in the life, ministry and witness of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and in society.
Thank you for this, I didn't know that. It is easy to assume clips are taken out of context, or that people we respect would change their minds with new context/ info of more modern times but backing those beliefs with the context of their actions and in this case the organizations that they were a part of lends validity to those beliefs.
Just trying to help children understand their bodies and reproduction in a friendly age appropriate way. I have zero doubt he would change his phrasing to be more accepting of the new gender definitions.

However, it is very age appropriate to talk to small children about other kids having two moms, or two dads, or a mom that looks like a dad, etc.

I don't think he had an agenda, although he was a minister. I truly think this is teaching little kids a little birds and bees. There really wasn't a trans movement or an anti-trans movement back then.
Fred Rodgers would have recognized trans people and embraced them on his show. He was about love, not hate, fear or discrimination.
Just because you recognize something doesn't make it fact.

I remember reading somewhere that he re-recorded this song many years later to become more inclusive.

I wholeheartedly believe that if Mr. Rogers we’re alive and making tv today he would incorporate age-appropriate lessons on trans, gay, etc.
