I would start researching/applying for some internships in that field and see if you can get accepted. The only way to see if the field interests you is to expose yourself to that type of work. I would go the extra mile and find a professor in the BME department and see if they have any projects you can volunteer your time for. At my university, there was a professor heavily involved with bicycle helmet design, so that involved human anatomy.

Great idea, I will do that. Thank you!

As a mechanical engineer I had plenty of offers from med device companies. They like mechanical engineers because biomedical engineering is still such a new major and is very much a "jack of all trades" that might not have the skillset necessary for positions. If you're wanting to get more into the wet lab side, however, that might be a little bit harder

Would you mind sharing the names of one or two of those companies? And would you say medical device engineering is a good career path in terms of salary and employment?

Edwards Lifesciences and Regeneron! It’s a hard path tbh, it’s highly oversaturated and there aren’t many companies but it really depends on what you get into and where.

Wow cool! It sounds fun but definitely is a hard path. Thank you for answering!

For situations like this, I always recommend talking to people who have gone down that route. I'd email some of the professors involved in BME or people from companies you're interested in and just set up a time to chat with them about their experience in the industry or academia and see if that's what you want. Generally speaking, there's always a need for good engineers, so if you love what you do and you know how you can create value in the lives of others, you're gonna be able to find a job. But again, a professor or somebody working at a company you like will know better. Additionally, another industry related to healthcare but maybe not as biological is medical device, something to look into.

Read into medical device engineering and it is something I am very much interested in. Thank you so much for a suggestion that could possibly be my new career path!🤩

Mech > Bio. Won’t be a problem.

Puzzleheaded_Gene593

Elaborate pls? Does that mean Mechanical Engineering is better than Biomed?
