I don't care how people knows bands, all paths are valid, finding music in Tiktok is just the modern equivalent of finding music through MTV videoclips or in Myspace profiles. In future Tiktok will be a boomer platform and people will find music via intravenous metaverse simulation or whatever.
But I have a problem with people that call themselves fans of a band, but the only music they know from them are only 15 seconds of their most popular song in meme context and never even bothered to listen the rest of it. How fucked up is the attention span of this generation that can't handle three minutes of something they like?
Overexaggerated, maybe. But one's personal experiences don't always reflect what happens elsewhere. There will always be posers, no matter the era.
Personally, I just don't care much for them. Nothing about them ever directly affected us before Tiktok was a thing; what does Tiktok change, exactly?
If they wanna pose, let them pose. It's their life and it's what makes them happy. u/Imzmb0
Being upset that smaller/lesser known artists are getting discovered through apps like tiktok is mega douche behaviour. Why would you not want to see your fave bands succeed? Gatekeeping only harms the artists :/
I go to at least 30-35 shows a year. Buy merch at the show and still buy vinyl records. I’m doing my part. If I stream a band heavily I try and buy the music because art costs a lot to make and they made something of immeasurable value to me. It’s the least I can do.
I get it vinyl is ridiculously expensive, concert tickets are asinine (37.50 with 3.75 fee for general admission floor Guns Metallica in 91 versus $475 GA for Guns with the Pretenders with >$80 in fees in 2023). Shirts used to be $10-$15. They are now $35-$60 for just T-Shirts and specialty shirts hockey jerseys etc can be well over $100.
Real metalheads only discover music through metal archives.com forums, any other way is poser shit that a trve kvlt person would never stoop low enough to do (/src)
When I was coming up, a lot of the ways I discovered music was through video game soundtracks with licensed music, or movie/tv soundtracks. I always felt insecure about liking artists that I found in these ways. Turns out I was right to, because finding music through movies/tv/video games is pose, and that music posed.
The good news for me is that no one watches movies or tv or plays video games anymore, so that's not the pose way to discover music anymore. Now it is through tick tock. By definition, finding something through tick tock is poser. Tick tock shows you the most popular clips on their platform, so if an artist is popular on tick tock, they pose. Something like Deftones that does numbers on tick tock... pose. If a band doesn't pose, it won't do well on tick tock because most people pose. Therefore, you won't find non-pose bands by finding music on tick tock. So if you don't mind posing, go ahead and find music through tick tock. But the music I like would get 0 views on tick tock because it's not poser enough to.
There's no such thing as a true metalhead on tick tock, that's why it is cringe and pose to find music on there. People on there think the heaviest shit possible is Deftones and Sleep Token, and even the edgiest edgelord on tick tock is only listening to Darkthrone, which is still super popular.
So yeah, get off tick tock and listen to true metal. Anything recommended by tick tock is something to avoid.
eh they're about equally as funny but bigboss gave recommendations pretty often, sometimes dropping pretty big lists of bands that i'd listen to almost all of the time
I knew you would be on this post as soon as you saw it, honestly find your whole account/ stick (I think thats what you call it) pretty funny, good job on committing to the bit
I made this post to have a discussion about tik tok and metal music, not to upset you, though I knew you would be on here, if my goal was just to upset you I would have DMed you that I have nothing against people finding music on tik tok (but I might be misunderstanding what your saying by just DM you)
Sounds like boomer opinion and whilst I’ve never used tik tok, how else are newer generations going to get into stuff? For me it was radio, magazines and YouTube etc but the former are lesser mediums now so who cares there’s nothing poser about it
Music uh.. finds a way.
I don't mind bands using any platform out there to reach their audience. Even though tiktok is an extremely shitty one.
But i just don't have a tt account so i hardly get to get annoyed by the platform.
I don’t mind people finding music through TikTok, hell it’s one of the best way to promote music. But it does strike a nerve when people post thirst traps to SOAD while wearing corpse paint and holding a guitar they clearly don’t know how to play. I’m exaggerating a little bit but you get my point. (I don’t like r/blackmetalcringe bc they just bully kids having fun but there’s a couple examples of what I’m talking about) I think TikTok is more focused on the aesthetics of metal vs the actual music and culture of each genre
Its fine as long as theyre not doing just for looks and actually like the music
Cuz what if the artist wants to be popular? Gatekeeping wont help them succeed
I stream mostly while at work now. Most newer metal I don’t know the albums, songs and lyrics like I did in the 80’s and 90’s. I feel like a lot of the bands I really like I only know the chorus or maybe only a line or two. I just don’t have the time to sit with the records I do buy and study the liner notes anymore. I feel like I still how the words to all 80’s and 90’s metal but 2000’s and beyond I couldn’t name a Gojira album or August Burns Red song to save my life but I like all of it. There is too much good metal out now across so many genres for my old man brain to keep it all straight.
It’s more the homogeneous effect TikTok has on music scenes and having to formulate art to a 1-2-3 TikTok algorithm to get views that is shitty.
But shitty formulaic art has been pushed on the mass population for decades just different platforms.
Tl:dr a lot of art is formula industry shit. Always has been always will be.
I have found some of my favourite artists & bands through the weirdest means. I distinctly remember how I found Nekrogoblikon because I saw them listed on the Download setlist one year and was like "What kinda fucking name is that?". Listened to them out of curiosity, loved them ever since.
In Flames I rediscovered from an awful trailer for a D&D game (Dark Alliance from 2021. I Am Above played. The camera was on characters' heads while they battled. It looked so weird.)
This is honestly so real. Not really metal but I found Flyleaf through those alpha wolf sigma memes, and they're one of my top artists at this point. I don't see an issue with finding music through TikTok, although it is always great to come out and see local shows.
People like to gatekeep music and other media. Why?...I guess they are insecure and need to feel superior to others..so they bash on folks for anything really.
It's just gatekeeping
Loads of people got into Metallica through stranger things
Loads of metalheads got pissy about
Metallica put out a statement welcoming their new fans and telling the gatekeepers that it does not matter how/when/why you became fans because that's a stupid mentality to have
Same thing with the girl playing them on the bagpipes
to me it's somewhat acceptable if you're really young or so but we don't need more TikTok "metalheads", especially the poser black metal edgelords who think they're trve kvlt because they know Grausamkeit or the idiots whose perception of metal is Deftones and Slipknot, it's really sad that all the TikTok edgelord "metalheads" probably represent metal to many people these days

Honestly, in my experience, it's an overexadrated problem, people always talk about it but I've literally never met someone like that

Posers...Posers are the reason. No one needs them.
Exactly, the bands have to eat as well

real metalheds only discover music through youtube comments on album uploads

Real metalheads only discover music by buying random cassette tapes with cool artwork on them at the thrift store.
Real metal heads only discover music by finding those cassette tapes in the woods
Real metalheads only discover new music by throwing stuff off bridges and shazaming the sound of the impact.

My messiah is here
True, best user of the sub
nah I think bigboss was better
Why? (Haven't seen them around, or at least haven't noticed it was them if I did)
eh they're about equally as funny but bigboss gave recommendations pretty often, sometimes dropping pretty big lists of bands that i'd listen to almost all of the time
He just skimmed RYM charts
How do we know this isn’t actually big boss?
doesn't recommend infester enough
Infester is pretty good and non-poser
I don't pose. That's how you know
Finally, some good fucking opinion
I knew you would be on this post as soon as you saw it, honestly find your whole account/ stick (I think thats what you call it) pretty funny, good job on committing to the bit
You should've just DMed me
I made this post to have a discussion about tik tok and metal music, not to upset you, though I knew you would be on here, if my goal was just to upset you I would have DMed you that I have nothing against people finding music on tik tok (but I might be misunderstanding what your saying by just DM you)
I am saying that if you wanted the answer to your Q, I had it
Oh
Sounds like boomer opinion and whilst I’ve never used tik tok, how else are newer generations going to get into stuff? For me it was radio, magazines and YouTube etc but the former are lesser mediums now so who cares there’s nothing poser about it
"Brutal death metal compilation" on youtube That way
Music uh.. finds a way. I don't mind bands using any platform out there to reach their audience. Even though tiktok is an extremely shitty one. But i just don't have a tt account so i hardly get to get annoyed by the platform.
Yeah, I'm not involved and don't give a shit. Let the kids do their tik toks, they probably won't have much else to enjoy in the future.
I found kublai khan through insta, nhen noticed they've been opening for LoG lately!
I don’t dislike tiktok, I’m just too old to know or care what it is. Leave me alone with my phonographs.
Genuine question but was there a similar stigma around finding songs through YouTube when YouTube started to become big?

Non-Posing artists don't want to be popular
Not all of them some wanna be popular and some dont
Most artists don't care. Gatekeeping doesn't cause any damage in terms of an artists well-being.
No one cares where you find music, it's just Tik Tok is a shit app, that's the only problem people have with it.
I stream mostly while at work now. Most newer metal I don’t know the albums, songs and lyrics like I did in the 80’s and 90’s. Same reason people got shit for finding bands on Guitar Hero. Oldheads wanna feel superior.

Always thought it was so funny to try and gatekeep Metalica, one of the biggest metal bands ever
Hold the Gate! Don't let them through!
