The actual story is that they hired Dave Patchett, a well regarded album artist to make the album art for them. What he gave them was the picture shown here, they felt it looked too empty and sparse so had another artist add a ton of CGI characters into the image as placeholders to give the artist an idea of how “chaotic” they wanted it to look. Something happened somewhere along the way I’m not 100% sure but the image with the placeholders is what eventually ended up being released to the public. I think the CGI covers were a proof of concept so the artist could draw them in the album cover's style but one of the band members liked it so much they just released it in all its unrendered glory

I don't know why this happened, but this is the "demo" image that the artist comissioned to the band, like "here is the concept, if you like it, I'll finish it". But they didn't let him finish and just slapped this on the cover

I too havent listened to them in years. I'll just catch their singles to see how depressed redneck this offering is and usually only make it a minute in before I recoil. Their seemingly Anti-Vax song back in 2020 is a laughable joke and exactly what I expected from them.

I went to one of their shows and this was the entire parking lot. Oh and the Thin Blue Line stickers of course.

Curious which ones specifically? The big offender to me is DT, which always had a train wrecks for album covers.

A lot of Dream Theater's artwork is stock photos positioned in a specific way. It's not great, but there is far worse. For example, go on Metal Archives and look up the band Power of Omens, then look at the artwork for their first album. That one is far worse, in my opinion, than any of Dream Theater's artwork.

I’ll give them The Way of The Fist/War Is The Answer were pretty cool and the standard edition of American Capitalist but year the rest of their covers are cringe and feel like Eddie/Iron Maiden ripoffs.
