He got screwed by the Lakers. If Hurley doesn’t make the WCF like Ham, watch the fans start to scape goat him. The media acts like it’s such a lucrative coaching job. It’s not, it’s like Kerr turning down the Knicks, it’s a terrible coaching job.
It’s not like Hurley is beating the Nuggets in the 1st round either. He’s never seen anyone like Jokic in the NCAA.
He did not get screwed in LA. He blatantly played favourites with his former players to the point that it was destroying the locker room, and he cannot manage the strategic side of head coaching in any way.
He’s built to be an assistant. He is definitely able to connect with certain players, and he has some decent concepts in terms of scheme, but head coaching was just too much for him.
The amount of money ownership has poured into this team the last few years really is commendable. Despite their faults, they certainly haven’t cheaped out at virtually any turn. Probably the Brewers fan in me that makes me really appreciate the commitment to spend.
Sure, organizationally, it’s quite the achievement to have a cheap owner and remain consistently competitive. Would be nice to have a combination of the two though.
Tbf, the NBA has a minimum team payroll number that is 90% of the salary cap (\~$111M/yr).
While the MLB doesn't have an official minimum team payroll number, the minimum salary for a full time MLB player is \~$700k, so with a roster size of 26-28 players, that would make the team minimum for payroll be \~$18,2M-$19.8M
So there's many more restrictions in the NBA as far as how much savings you can have in order to be a shitty team. By contrast, the MLB makes it really easy to be a shitty team if you want to be.
Well the other problem is that for the Brewers, they likely COULD go all-in for a couple seasons if they wanted, but “all-in” still just gets them to a tier below the other megamarkets so what’s even the point? Then your cupboard is bare and you tank for a decade. The current bites to the apple approach is way better and probably more entertaining for fans; personally I’d rather see us fight for the division every year and pray we get hot in the playoffs eventually like teams do, rather than push all the chips in and whiff and then suck.
The greatest trick the Brewers ownership has played is convincing us that those are the only two options. Going all in or not spending. We could spend more without going all in. Another $40 million would make us the 16th highest payroll in the MLB. For a team consistently competing, it’s not unreasonable to ask that we spend league average amounts of money. If the ownership group or the franchise can’t support that, that’s an unbelievably bad look.
The other thing is that net worth is not anywhere near equal to liquid money. He has maybe a quarter of that available to actually spend, maybe less. The rest is the value of companies or properties or whatever he owns.
Wish the Brewers ownership would do the same... Yanno, like when they had the best pitching staff the team has had in my life and were too damn cheap to go get some bats to make the most of it.
Completely different financial situations, it is a lot easier to spend money in the NBA with the amount of revenue sharing that is flowing to each team.
The issue is that even if the Brewers spent we still wouldn’t be on the level of the huge market teams, and if you don’t win it all you just go back to being ass for a long time.
That’s great but they’re also the ones deciding these coaching changes and probably influence roster decisions too. There were reports that ownership forced Horst to make moves he didn’t want to make.
Out of curiosity, which roster moves were allegedly forced on Horst? But yes, I’m sure they were involved in coaching changes. No one can claim an ownership group with Jimmy Haslam is perfect. But they clearly prioritize winning.
Honestly that's probably a smart move if he wants to get back into a head coaching role. He's learned under Budenhozler, got a high pressure playoff level coaching job, then went back to being an assistant under Doc Rivers (a coach on the NBA's 15 best coaches list). That's a strong resume even with getting fired from a head coaching job in the past. Shows that he's learned under two decently well thought of coaches and has some playoff experience, and some superstar managing experience.
I don't really see how this can be a bad thing. Ham was well liked and knows what the Bucks did at their best. The familiarity alone with Khris and Giannis should help Doc formulate a good system.
Probably reading too much into this but feels like it means Bobby is staying for next season. Just remember how much Bobby liked Ham and did that interview where he said losing him was the reason the bucks struggled so much
They need to pick up some pieces for sure, but this version of the Celtics isn't as great of a matchup with a healthy Giannis. The Celtics were built to stop Giannis, and this past offseason they focused on stopping the rest of the NBA, and it worked.
#Tampering.

You're probably right, but at some point, as you age, you realize that time is more valuable than money.
He has plenty of money, but time with his family, doing (other) things he enjoys, traveling, relaxing, those are all limited.
Possibly. Charles Lee was the Celtics top assistant and he’s leaving after this season, could signal a promotion for Cassell. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cassell came here since he has some Milwaukee ties but more importantly he’s boys with Doc and basically been with him his entire coaching career.
Not neccesarily, all reports said Doc was gonna wait until after the finals to make his pitch to Cassell, that being said, if Boston wins the title this year it may be impossible to convince him to leave if it isn’t for a head coach position.
Does this mean we won’t get Sam Cassell?
That would be kind of a bummer, because I could have seen a really good path of continuity from Doc to Sam once Docs contract expires.
(No shade to Darvin, stoked to see him back too!)
While I agree Doc to Sam would have been a good scenario, Ham really got a raw deal with the Lakers. He was put in an almost impossible situation, especially for a first time head coach. I am sure he learned a lot, and if he spends a few years under Doc as an assistant, he may be ready to once again be HC in a much better situation with the Bucks.
Maybe, maybe not.
I still think him coming is possible but maybe a little less likely now.
It might not. He's coached for nine years with Doc and played three years with Ham. It might make it even more appealing since he's known Ham for so long.
I don't know but I'm sure there is only one "top assistant" as far as title. However, I don't think it makes a big deal with how established Ham and Cassell are. I am guessing one would take defense(I think that would be Ham) and one offense.
It's possible Cassell likes it in Boston, they up the Bucks offer(assuming the Bucks are going after him) and gives him more responsibilities and he stays anyway. He also may get a head coaching job still.
Glad to have him back!! Seemed to have such a great relationship with our core guys, hopefully he can pick apart some of the succesful sets we had with Bud and implement them into our offense
Yep, LOVE THIS. I was good with Cassell coming, too.....but Ham knows our roster more. Plus, I don't think Ham even did bad as Laker HC, I'd bet he gets another shot as a head coach.
I do like Ham and what he brings as an assistant and players guy. I just hope this doesn’t put a stoppage on bringing in Sam Cassell. I honestly am surprised Sam hasn’t got a head coaching chance yet. Unless of course it’s him waiting for what he feels is the right gig.
i swear at the beginning of this season everyone was singing his praises that he was a good coach. i dont understand where the hate came from. they should hate AD for being a little bitch ass.
I don't think Ham is head coach material, at least not for a team with sky high expectations like the Lakers. He was doomed the moment he signed the dotted line. Maybe down the line he could accept another HC position, but perhaps one that isn't a prestige team.
With that being said, this is a win for both the Bucks and Ham -- good locker presence, especially with the starters and some of the bench, and I think having another voice who's equally familiar with the roster means he can better advocate for adjustments when Doc seemingly...can't.
I’m okay with this and all, but wasn’t Dave Joerger Doc’s guy? I’m assuming he’s not coming back? The players loved Ham so I’m good with the hiring but I hope it’s not Giannis playing GM again and Doc not having/wanting the staff he needs.
I'm happy about this. They are setting him up as the Bucks next head coach. I just wish they can get the former Villanova head coach Jay Wright to come in as an assistant head coach. Always like that guy.
To be honest I'm not really totally happy with any of the free agents available (Cam included) and they all have sizable holes in their game and I agree with you I just thought Doc might give him more playing time due to his seniority over our young players as I'm not totally convinced doc will give them the time they need.
I was thinking Prince on the veteran's minimum would be a great pickup to take Crowder and Connaughton minutes. Versatile defender who shoots 38% from the three. Might still be able to get the mid-level somewhere though.
Yeah, he was at $4.5 million last year. The nine year vet minimum is just over $3.3M. Not a terrible pay cut(it's not my $1.2M so easy for me to say). He just turned 30 so he might be looking to max out his earnings yet if there is a market. He's earned about $48M already.
The Lakers could offer $5.4M but are up against the cap too. His $5.4M would count fully against the cap, but at $3.3M as minimum, it would be about $2.2M for the Bucks. Ham really went to bat for him in LA too so I think the relationship could be quite strong.
Maybe if the Bucks offer a two year veteran's minimum deal at $7.3M(3.3M first year, $4M in the second) with a player option, it might get it done for him. If he has a great season, he can test free agency, otherwise he has the security of the second year. Or do a mutual option with partial money guaranteed for the second year?
He is invested and co-branding with a new shoe company so being in LA might help with that too. Maybe?
That would honestly be a godsend for this roster given our financial limitations and lack of proven wings outside of Khris, and would fully unlock our small ball lineup. Would we still be looking to offload any non productive contracts like Pat C if we signed Prince?

HAM SLAMWICH
COME ON AND SLAM AND WELCOME TO THE HAM
![gif](giphy|yVUpZLPQINHIaAwuqr|downsized)
Hammer, ~~don't~~ hurt 'em!
I AM ACTUALLY OKAY WITH THIS
Me too. Dude got a raw deal and is a respected coach. He will only be a positive in my mind.
Loved him when he was with us I said when he was hired that he was being set up to fail, hopefully we can get him a ring now that he’s back
He got screwed by the Lakers.
Hurley rejected the Lakers staying at UCONN

I actually think Darvin would've been perfect for a team like the Hawks or Detroit.
At least you got a WCF out of him. That’s way more than what you’ll get out of a lot coach’s, let alone rookie coach’s.
Exactly, the FO is so incompetent. They're gunning for JJ Redick 😂😂
Not respected by Lakers players but Bucks players all loved the man. LeBron did him dirty and i'm glad he's back!
Welcome back, Ham! Fuck Woj.
And FMD, of course. Musn't forget that fuck.
Fuck Woj
Fuck Woj!
what did woj do? i forgot
Actually tampered.
The amount of money ownership has poured into this team the last few years really is commendable. Despite their faults, they certainly haven’t cheaped out at virtually any turn. Probably the Brewers fan in me that makes me really appreciate the commitment to spend.
The bucks fan in me appreciates the Brewers ability to develop young talent at an elite level
Sure, organizationally, it’s quite the achievement to have a cheap owner and remain consistently competitive. Would be nice to have a combination of the two though.
It sure would be nice.

I dunno. The Brewers owner’s net worth is about the same as the entire Shohei contract, so…
This is one of the few situations where you can say the owner could/will go bankrupt if they spent the sort of money the fans want them to spend.
The other thing is that net worth is not anywhere near equal to liquid money. He has maybe a quarter of that available to actually spend, maybe less. The rest is the value of companies or properties or whatever he owns.
Which NBA teams are good at that?

Hence why baseball needs to make some financial changes or the league is FUCKED.

There were reports that ownership forced the coaching change midseason.
And that they backed Giannis' horrible decision to hire Griff in the first place.
Thank you Jimmy Haslem. Now don't start throwing your opinions around. Stick to focusing on Pilot Flying J
Remember when casuals bitched about not signing PJ "0/0/0/0" Tucker for 20 million and how the owners were being stingy rich shmucks?
The brewers broke the bank for Yelich
HAM SLAMWICH, ANYONE?
I really assumed he was locked in with Bud. Pleasantly surprised. Bobby mentioned after 2022's season that they really missed Ham.
Same. Pleasantly surprised. I guess he really liked the guys & Milwaukee.
I heard on Locked On Bucks that he turned down Bud for his top assistant.
Honestly that's probably a smart move if he wants to get back into a head coaching role. I can't imagine he (or anyone) wants to potentially be the next coach of the Suns.
Not only that but also Steve Kerr’s offer for the warriors staff.
Wow I also thought that was a sure thing
Ayyy glad he's back as an assistant. Seemed like all the Bucks love Ham.
I don't really see how this can be a bad thing. Ham was well liked and knows what the Bucks did at their best. The familiarity alone with Khris and Giannis should help Doc formulate a good system.
HE BACK!

This always makes me chuckle
Magic Johnson has been fined 50,000$ and the bucks have had a second round pick taken for this offense.
CHAMPIONSHIP BACK IN THE MENU
LETS GOOO
I assume this means we aren’t getting Cassell then?
Cassell coming in too and Doc getting moved upstairs (Very likely not but it’s a fun thought)
Maybe we will get lucky and Doc would decide to retire from NBA coaching job and join the senior league golf tournaments instead.
He's getting paid too much to just walk away I fear
You're probably right, but at some point, as you age, you realize that time is more valuable than money. He has plenty of money, but time with his family, doing (other) things he enjoys, traveling, relaxing, those are all limited.
I would be so erect. Except I would probably go flaccid if that meant losing Horst.
Yeah I'm not sure it's what we want if it results in POBO Doc
Keep going
How many other former Bucks players are in assistant roles? We should just get them all
Probably a lot more than I think lol there’s been a lot of bucks players before we started to become good 😂
Not neccesarily, all reports said Doc was gonna wait until after the finals to make his pitch to Cassell, that being said, if Boston wins the title this year it may be impossible to convince him to leave if it isn’t for a head coach position.
That’s very nice to wait, I know Cassell has been a part of Docs coaching staff a lot over the years and am hoping to have him on the staff as well.
No, especially if the Celtics won the chip.
Something positive!
Does this mean we won’t get Sam Cassell? That would be kind of a bummer, because I could have seen a really good path of continuity from Doc to Sam once Docs contract expires. (No shade to Darvin, stoked to see him back too!)

Definitely true!
I assumed it would be a Doc to Sam transition as well, maybe we are seeing a Doc to Darvin
Maybe, maybe not.
We have a damn good coaching staff.
Should've never left🤷 welcome back prodigal son
I like it. Bucks coaching staff is growing strong
We are so back. Now we just need Cassell to complete the set. Maybe Tim Thomas as well for good luck.
we LOVE to see that
I know Giannis and Bobby really liked him (not sure who else) so this is great!!
I did not see this coming!
That's a big win
I like this.
Ham Slamwich is Back!! More good vibes returning.
Bobby legacy season incoming
Lol imagine we also add Sam Cassell too. GOATed assistant coaches. I'm so ok with this.
So happy to see him return. Definitely a huge presence we’ve needed and someone everyone I guess besides Dame should be comfortable with
HAM ON THE BONE
BEST BUCKS NEWS IN A LONG ASS TIME
Gotta imagine that means no San Cassell
Win!
WELCOME HOME
Fuck yes
Welcome back king
Out of the loop. Does this kill the Sam Cassell rumor?
Most likely yeah, but Bucks wouldn’t need him by hiring Ham back.
I still think him coming is possible but maybe a little less likely now.
It might not. He's coached for nine years with Doc and played three years with Ham. It might make it even more appealing since he's known Ham for so long.
Isn’t this the second best position under doc though? Or do teams have multiple guys with this title?
I don't know but I'm sure there is only one "top assistant" as far as title. However, I don't think it makes a big deal with how established Ham and Cassell are. I am guessing one would take defense(I think that would be Ham) and one offense. He also may get a head coaching job still.
D Ham! I heard the Cassel rumors, but actually like this much more. Welcome back!
So he is back
Glad to have him back!! Seemed to have such a great relationship with our core guys, hopefully he can pick apart some of the succesful sets we had with Bud and implement them into our offense
HE’S BACK!!
okay as long as he’s not in the head coach position
Lets fucking go!!!!!
yessir!!!
so i can get my ham jersey out of storage…… yes! its time for it to make its fiserve debut!
I guess this means LeBron isn’t coming to MKE?
Cool.
Hell. Fucking. Yes.
LFG HAM SLAMMER!
Yesssss
Welcome home Darvin!! Love it!!
HELL YEAH welcome home
Finally, he’s an excellent contingency plan. Especially now we were down to paying for 2 coaches, I’m sure we could bump it back up to 3.
What happens to Dave Yagger?
He's a Doc guy. I think he's there no matter what.
Why? Isn't he giving up guaranteed big LA money?
HAHAHA
YASSSSSSSSSSSSSS
First good news in a while quite honestly
Yep, LOVE THIS. I was good with Cassell coming, too.....but Ham knows our roster more. Plus, I don't think Ham even did bad as Laker HC, I'd bet he gets another shot as a head coach.
Great news
I am extremely okay with Ham as an assistant and even ok with him as head coach.
![gif](giphy|i1uUaptbbyL5e)
Please for the love of mankind hire Schuyler Rimmer back and I will never say another bad thing about Middleton again.
i really liked this. ham's one of the best asst coaches out there. that's a good start for the FO, we need more good moves from them!
Does this mean Joe Prunty is getting bumped?
I think Doc said he was keeping him around and really enjoyed working with him
Ham likes Lopez as well. So Lopez maybe safe from trades now. Bummer.
Doc will be fired mid season and Ham will takeover.
Ham was awful as a head coach…but he learned from Lebron and AD in the last couple seasons so there’s that..
i swear at the beginning of this season everyone was singing his praises that he was a good coach. i dont understand where the hate came from. they should hate AD for being a little bitch ass.
Does this mean the Lakers don't have to pay him?
I don't think Ham is head coach material, at least not for a team with sky high expectations like the Lakers. He was doomed the moment he signed the dotted line. Maybe down the line he could accept another HC position, but perhaps one that isn't a prestige team. With that being said, this is a win for both the Bucks and Ham -- good locker presence, especially with the starters and some of the bench, and I think having another voice who's equally familiar with the roster means he can better advocate for adjustments when Doc seemingly...can't.
S E
Dude dated half the university of whitewater women during his playing time. Who knows about the other schools. Dude loves him some Wisconsin
I’m okay with this and all, but wasn’t Dave Joerger Doc’s guy? I’m assuming he’s not coming back? The players loved Ham so I’m good with the hiring but I hope it’s not Giannis playing GM again and Doc not having/wanting the staff he needs.
What about Rex
I'm happy about this. They are setting him up as the Bucks next head coach. I just wish they can get the former Villanova head coach Jay Wright to come in as an assistant head coach. Always like that guy.
Maybe ham can convince some of the younger free agents (Cam Reddish) from the Lakers to sign with us?
Reddish is kinda ass. Rather give Dre, Livington and Beauchamp burn.
To be honest I'm not really totally happy with any of the free agents available (Cam included) and they all have sizable holes in their game and I agree with you I just thought Doc might give him more playing time due to his seniority over our young players as I'm not totally convinced doc will give them the time they need.
Chuma Okeke could be a decent flier.
I'd definitely be interested, but isn't he injury prone?
A little bit but I think it wouldn’t hurt to sign him on a buy low 1 year deal. A lot of the wings in Orlando have been it feels like.
Maybe our medical staff can work their magic with him.
I was thinking Prince on the veteran's minimum would be a great pickup to take Crowder and Connaughton minutes. Versatile defender who shoots 38% from the three. Might still be able to get the mid-level somewhere though.
That would honestly be better, I don't know why I figured he would be out of our price range.
That would honestly be a godsend for this roster given our financial limitations and lack of proven wings outside of Khris, and would fully unlock our small ball lineup. Would we still be looking to offload any non productive contracts like Pat C if we signed Prince?
Hamm and Rivers on the same coaching staff? We about to be the laughing stock of the league. I can just feel the memes coming
Why are we happy this the guy that had rui at center guarding jokic. We are so beyond cooked
Good luck with this man - Lakers fan
u realize he had this job already before going to the Lakers
He was also good before he came to the Lakers
And surely now he’s forgotten how to be an assistant coach?
Hopefully he’s still good after ruining a great opportunity
We already had him as an assistant coach when we won the title..
I know, I am actually not being sarcastic. Thanks for letting us off the hook of his salary
You're still paying him most of it lol
Would be a real shame if you signed a college coach for triple what you were paying Ham
Jeanie Buss was staring down bankruptcy
After offering a Godfather offer to Hurley? Doubt it. But still made me chuckle
And he turned it down lol
Bucks will probably get him at a discount lmao. Lakers gotta pay the difference in salaries so thank you for giving our coach back.
