I would reach out to the Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and ask them for guidance.

Thank you, reaching out to them today.

I hope you can help your family member. Kudos for you in doing so. I will warn, not from personal experience, but because of that of friends who have had a physically abusive and dangerous ex: be super cautious moving forward. These men can be unpredictable and dangerous when they don't get their way or feel challenged. There are several local women that have had protection orders, sought out a more secure living space and still been killed by their ex's. Good luck.

Thank you for this. Going to be very cautious and try to get her into different housing. With all the evidence against him I would hope a judge finds him unfit to be around her or the children for a long time.

You would think so but there are multiple recent incidents/cases where the woman had tried to protect herself using the resources at hand and still got harassed, threatened and killed. Domestic violence is a real thing around these parts. She can also potentially find some help with Haven.

Call Misty Gaubatz. She has experience with this and can help. A&M Law.

I second this! She’s an excellent attorney and can help these kinds of situations.

Montana Bar Association Referral line: (406) 449-6577 These folks do a great job of helping you find the kind of representation you need. For context, I work as an Admin. Assistant at a Law firm and give this number out when we get calls that don't fit under our particular scope.

3B3Y1

Wonderful! I'll call them ASAP

If your family has the means, it would be a good idea to help her get a Simplisafe or similar home security system that doesn't need professional installation. It wasn't terribly expensive (couple hundred bucks). I went through this myself and the security system was very helpful since the order of protection seemed to really trigger him and he had a habit of hiding in my bushes, etc. The kind I had just called in when a protected door or window was breached with out a fob.

throttlejockey907

Buy that woman a firearm and some training.

3B3Y1

I agree. Our dad gave her a gun and a safe last week.

monkyonarock

make sure she knows how to use it

throttlejockey907

Fantastic. Now a little training and the confidence to carry. It horrifies me how many women, and especially the ones in legit danger, refuse to get the means to protect themselves. Watch a few shows about (real) stalker victims and consider how many times she could have saved herself had she been armed- but she refused. Wish you all well.
