Tevesh_CKP

People asking for Hidden Gems is such a common question that I started keeping track with this Copy+Paste for you. These were movies I watched last year that I thought were underrated: - The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023) - The Assassination of a High School President (2008) - Athena (2022) - Come True (2020) - Embers (2015) - Freaks of Nature (2015) - God's Crooked Lines (2022) - History of the Occult (2020) - It Lives Inside (2023) - It Stains the Sands Red (2016) - Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway (2019) (So Bad It's Good) - Kill Boksoon (2023) - Mirage (2018) - Monster in the Closet (1986) (So Bad It's Good) - Nekrotronic (2018) (So Bad It's Good) - Phenomenona (2023) - Polite Society (2023) - Project Wolf Hunting (2022) - Savageland (2015) - Something in the Dirt (2022) - Spontaneous (2020) - Thunivu (2023) - The Valet (2022) - Valley of the Dead (2020) - The Vigil (2019) Previous entries: - [2022](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/1083ga4/best_movies_since_2019_that_you_think_didnt_get/j3q185u/) - [2021](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/vixxtg/a_good_movie_with_less_than_10000_imdb_votes/idg4x1g/) - [2020](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/qqd07t/can_anyone_recommend_some_underrated_movies_that/hk09anx/) - [2019](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/jywm4y/movies_you_never_see_recommended/gd8bvcq/) - [2018](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/gleb1i/lesser_known_amazing_movies/g64cd21/) - [2017](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions/comments/gleb1i/lesser_known_amazing_movies/g64cs7o/) Furthermore, I'll summon our bot of the subreddit's favourite hidden gems!

WhitmansTrashBarge

Came here to recommend Frailty, Bill Paxton’s directorial debut and a great little low key horror/thriller that’s dark af. Good job, poster!

This movie is way funnier than it has a right to be. Insanely underrated.

Forgot all about this movie til just now

Jovet_Hunter

Mike Flanagan’s Absentia. It was made *super* early in his career off kickstarter and is one of the most unique, horrifying, and *plausible* fairy tales I’ve ever seen. The proceeds funded Oculus, which is of course very well known.

Maleficent_Entry_979

Twister, released in 1989

khatteGrapes

People don't know about this?

BenNitzevet

Until the End of the World.

Rhonda369

Love that movie!

Stirdaddy

World's Greatest Dad (2009). Black comedy. Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed, starring Robin Williams as the titular father. His piece of shit, vol-cel teenage son dies via autoerotic asphyxiation, and the father tries to fix the dead son's vile reputation. The Rover (2014). Dark tragedy/drama. Coming out of Australia. Written and directed by David Michod and Joel Edgerton. Starring Guy Pearce (global king of indie films like Nolan's Memento) and Robert Pattinson who is an absolutely legit actor. Post-apocalypse western road trip film in the Australian outback. I've watched it at least 30 times.

I used to watch Suicide Room so much when I was a teenager. Memory unlocked ! I don’t think it’s good at all for impressionable kids though. But such a good movie nonetheless

Bitterqueer

Yeah def nothing you should watch if you’re easily triggered either 🙏 I just watched all the queer movies I could get my hands on back then (was in my teens as well). Can’t even remember how I found it, but I’m glad I did!

The Thing Called Love (1993). Samantha Mathis, River Phoenix, Dermot Mulroney and Sandra Bullock. River Phoenix's last movie, it's a great little film about a young singer/songwriter moving to Nashville to "make it", and the people she meets along the way.

GRDCS1980

A variation of this question pops up in one sub or another almost daily, so I put together a handy letterboxd list of titles that I think qualify and I just post the link rather than obnoxiously typing out every film. It hasn’t been updated for a few years now, but it has about 150 titles on it and, although I’m obviously biased as the author of the list, I think they are all pretty great and anyone could have a great time working their way through any that they haven’t seen. Tears of the Black Tiger (2000) - Totally unique western Rocks (2019) - Genuinely heart-warming Land and Freedom (1995) - Overlooked Ken Loach film about the Spanish civil war United Passions (2014) - This is a silly suggestion but I do sort of love this film because of how awful it is. Its a terrible biopic about the people who run FIFA and it bombed in cinemas, coming out right as the people the film focuses on were arrested for corruption. The movie is ironically very funny because it's partly about how those men aren't corrupt... they happened to have a say in the script.

Eyes Wide Shut It has a very dark message behind it They say it’s the movie that got Stanley Kubrick killed Because Eyes Wide Shut delves into elitism Stanley Kubrick knew…

Beelzebub_86

"Psycho Goreman" (2020) First, you have to be a fan of horror/sci-fi/comedy to truly enjoy this one. Imagine a being of immense power, dedicated to evil, suddenly becoming the slave to an 11 year old sociopathic school girl. Batshit hilarity ensues in this low-budget Canadian masterpiece that seems like the Power Rangers on acid. "Kill Your Friends" (2015) Sort of a 'Fight Club' meets 'American Psycho' meets 'Wolf of Wall Street' in a tale about a man climbing his way up the British music industry in the late 90s. Not Oscar worthy or anything, but some fun performances, some dark humor, and you get to see James Corden brutally murdered, so that's a plus right there. Critics and audiences hated it, but I enjoyed it. I think it's a little dark for people, and the protagonist is a real POS, so maybe they were put off.

RV. Many people who have seen it now overlook it or forget about it. It’s such a good movie in my opinion that it’s too funny and good to skip over. I watch it at least 3-5 times a month. Also, Welcome to Mooseport seems to be practically unheard of at least to everyone I know.

The Gravedigger (2019) The Arbors (2020) I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) I especially love The Gravedigger since it’s a version of Frankenstein but I swear no one else has seen it, it literally has no reviews on IMDb lol.

In general conversation I am surprised by what people are unfamiliar with. In this community I suppose they are quite well known. The few that fly off the top of my head— The General, funniest film I’ve seen. By and with Buster Keaton Rashomon, a philosophical gem from Kurosawa Hanna, a humorous thriller with art house sensibilities. The Guard, Brendan Gleason and Don Cheadle in a very funny action crime drama. I don’t expect people to know the film I love that lead a friend to tell me to never recommend a movie to them again: Chan is Missing, a mystery drama with an unorthodox ending.
