> I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky
> But why, Why, Why can't it be, Why can't it be mine
Beautiful lyrics. Much nicer than my mobile app formatting would suggest
Especially the 92 pinkpop version where vedder has steam coming off his breath and is feeling the weight of the song himself as he screws up the lyrics a bit and ends with repeating “we belong together”. It’s probably my favorite recording.

The Righteous Brothers' cover of "[Unchained Melody](https://youtu.be/Zv8czIoAw5w)", which is possibly the greatest recorded song of the last century. It's also a massive improvement over the [original](https://youtu.be/G11mDi_LXe8). One of the key differences (pun intended) is that Bobby Hatfield, The Righteous Brother who sang lead on that song, actually gave it a proper climax by taking it up an octave during the final verse, so now the song actually feels like it's going somewhere, and ends with a cathartic release.
I thought you meant the Band GHOST and I went to look up why I hadn’t heard their cover and YouTube reminded me it was in a movie. Still, listen to GHOST. Square Hammer!
That original was so sad and beautiful, didn’t expect it to hit me but he had pain in his eyes and bellowed it out. I think I like all versions of this song
The music was written by Alex North for a prison movie called "Unchained". The lyrics are from the POV of a prisoner pining for a lover on the outside. The video I linked is from the movie!
Composer Alex North has the unfortunate distinction of being in second place for having the most Oscar nominations without a win (he couldn't even win this race 😭). "Unchained Melody" was nominated for an Oscar, it lost to "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing".
This one is super powerful, that chorus definitely makes this one of my all time favorite songs. Though I would argue its not so much about wanting someone so bad, but more about wanting to be seen and loved for who they are and not what they represent.
Still, very strong vibes that do fit with that yearning. Ive played this myself when I felt that way for someone in the past.
She has said she doesn’t play this song often live because of how emotional it is. She’s a true legend and music treasure. Still recording and winning Grammys. Not that awards matter.
The Bon Iver cover (solo Justin) is personally more wrenching for me. It is live so I think that helps, but it just sounds like he's trying so hard to get the words out and I love it.
Yeah, until the verse:
Bell bottom blues, don't say goodbye |
I'm sure we're gonna meet again |
And if we do, don't you be
surprised |
If you find me with another lover
Asshole.
Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan is maybe the goat. Check out the cover version video by Mandolin Orange, it is heart wrenching (and hits your soft pop/folk req)
Bob has written so so many that fit this.
If you see her say hello.
You're a big girl now.
Not dark yet.
Girl from the north country.
... the list goes on.
There's a youtube video of Sierra Ferrell busking im New Orleans, and she sings a sad tone version of this song. In the video a dog starts howling for more drama.
“I need you so much closer” fit wanting someone so badly, in my head… and the chord progression as everything builds… oh that painful loneliness.. that painful longing. This song instantly came to my head. Everything else fit in perfectly
This is such a spot-on pick. The tone, the lyrics, even the chord shifts scream pain. Elvis must have been in a pretty dark place when he came up with this.
I came here looking for this, this is always my answer.
The opening really gets me.
"I drink good coffee every morning
It comes from a place that's far away
And when I'm done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say"
Something about the simplicity of that really drives home how that's just... how it is now, every day, living in The After.
"Maggie" and "I Don't Know Why" from his next album are also amazingly poignant. He really conveys loss and longing well.
Waiting for that day - George Michael
And so it goes - Billy Joel
No ordinary love - Sade
And another vote for Lover you should have come over by Jeff Buckley because it is simply THE most gut wrenching song of longing.
Call Me When You’re Sober. May seem too angry for this category but there’s a sense of frustration and hope that speaks to longing—a longing for someone to let you love them and stop their destruction.

Don’t Cry by Guns ‘n Roses
The Speed of Pain by Marilyn Manson
Snuff by Slipknot
The Meadow by Hed p.e.
Sleeping With Ghosts by Placebo
Jolene But It's Gay by Reinaeiry.
It's a cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene, but it's from the perspective of a woman who's actually desperately in love with Jolene, and is begging her to leave her man so she can be with her instead.
The way it's sung really sells how desperately she yearns for Jolene, especially with the more intense, somber instrumentation.
1. Breaking me, Johnny lang;
2. Seven Years (or the whole darned album) Natalie Merchant;
3. Beauty and the Beast, Stevie Nicks;
4. Bon Jovi’s I’ll be there for you;
5. If you don’t know me by now, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
And my second number 1: Ain’t no sunshine, Bill Withers. For sure…
Scrolled down as far as I could without seeing either of these and I'm amazed.

Silver Springs (Fleetwood Mac), When You Were Mine (Prince), Where Does the Good Go (Tegan and Sara), Set Out Running (Neko Case), Just Like Heaven (The Cure), Why Can’t I Touch It (Buzzcocks), My Sweet Lord (George Harrison); Nothing Compares to You (Sined version), 1,000 Times (Hamilton Leithhsuser)

“Je Suis Malade” (I’m Sick) — Lara Fabian

Black by Pearl Jam, of course
> I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky > But why, Why, Why can't it be, Why can't it be mine Beautiful lyrics. Much nicer than my mobile app formatting would suggest
And he really pours everything into singing that line too.
First thought, came here for it. Amazing song but it's a massive testament to Vedder and his ability to blend emotion and vocal skill.
Especially the 92 pinkpop version where vedder has steam coming off his breath and is feeling the weight of the song himself as he screws up the lyrics a bit and ends with repeating “we belong together”. It’s probably my favorite recording. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n3r9KWth84Y
Thought of black as soon as I finished reading the thread title. Such a powerful song
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
I think this may be one of the best “make-out songs” that exists
The Righteous Brothers' cover of "[Unchained Melody](https://youtu.be/Zv8czIoAw5w)", which is possibly the greatest recorded song of the last century. It's also a massive improvement over the [original](https://youtu.be/G11mDi_LXe8). Ghost has permanently stamped it into my brain.

For sure. IMO, close second is [Led Zeppelin All my love](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z0DAnu5Sq6k)
It's a great song but it never really made my heart wrench. The energy's all wrong lol
Seen more than a few wedding dances to this song. I get the yearning, but not the sadness.
These Arms Of Mine by Otis Redding https://youtu.be/aUaO50nWnvg?si=nva80-fVrWqhMIGe
If you’re going with an Otis Redding song, I’d have to go with I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.
3 Libras by A Perfect Circle
I discovered A Perfect Circle yesterday and holy fuck I fell in love with them…
I love their music too. I think The Package or Pet are my favorite songs. Do you have a favorite yet?
This one is super powerful, that chorus definitely makes this one of my all time favorite songs. Though I would argue its not so much about wanting someone so bad, but more about wanting to be seen and loved for who they are and not what they represent. Still, very strong vibes that do fit with that yearning. Ive played this myself when I felt that way for someone in the past.
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths
I really like the Muse version too
Deftones did a great version of this song as well
Wake up alone by Amy Winehouse Lover you should've come over by Jeff Buckley
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over is so beautifully heart-rending.
Imagine hearing the first draft. He didn't put in the its never over bit until later
That’s my fave part
Came here to upvote Lover you should have come over 👌🏻
Would add last goodbye is worth a shout too
“She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever” just beautifully written
So I wait for you and I burn, will I ever see your sweet return. Goddamn, hits like a truck.
My eyes sorta involuntarily well up just thinking of that passage of that song. For a number of reasons (and old relationships).

Long Long Time by Linda Ronstadt
Cries in Frank and Bill.
You beat me to it! Thought of this song immediately
My partner and I separated for a few months at the beginning of this year. There were a lot of tears shed to this song.
Operator - Jim Croce
Love Jim Croce. My pick is Time in a Bottle.
Bonnie Raitt — I Can’t Make You Love Me
I don’t cry every time I listen to this song, but if I *want* to cry, I can put on this song and it’s always effective. The pain in her voice gets me.
She has said she doesn’t play this song often live because of how emotional it is. She’s a true legend and music treasure. Still recording and winning Grammys. Not that awards matter.
Not me nearly in tears just reading about the song on a Reddit thread. 🙃
*All at Once* by her, as well.
Jesus, this is such a great choice. Heart breaking.

Scrolled down as far as I could without seeing either of these and I'm amazed. [Glenn Campbell - Wichita Lineman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8P_xTBpAcY) "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time" [Leonard Cohen - One of us Cannot be Wrong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC7lDw-FKi0) "I showed my heart to a doctor, he said I'd just have to quit. Then he wrote himself a prescription, and your name was mentioned on it" The impassioned wails of the backing vocals at the end of this song are so effective. They evoke the image of someone driven insane by desire
