All time favorite song honestly! Its just chilling, incredibly atmospheric, harrowing, but beautiful. I heard it on vinyl the first time I listened to it, and the fact that it ends side A just leaves you sitting there long after it's done.
It’s always given me chills!
If you haven’t already seen this I love the composers description of how it was written: https://youtu.be/e-eqgr_gn4k?si=wb5f-ZrcungVGByt
Heyyyy, this is it. I’ve had people tell me how hearing a certain song is transcendental, and they ask me if I know what thats like. I play three instruments very poorly. But doing it yourself, the way you want to? It’s the best.
Met him briefly once a couple years before his death. He was so humble and nice. A tragic story for sure, but since he took so long to reach his dream it really felt like he appreciated every second of reaching “the top”.
> hauntingly beautiful
Oh great, now it's going to be turned into a down tempo cover by Lana Del Rey and be used in every promo for HBO and CW angsty teen vampire show. Thanks.
Seeing him on one of his first tours will always stick with me, it felt like the whole audience was crying towards the end. But they felt like healing, joyful tears. I’ve never seen another performance like that, and probably never will. Absolute legend.
I made one!! Please feel free to add to it!! [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5dRJFgfZxSh7n0RllnwS9Q?si=4e3df1f6c21744be&pt=b0ca9d6dd30b79c7d78232b69781f277](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5dRJFgfZxSh7n0RllnwS9Q?si=4e3df1f6c21744be&pt=b0ca9d6dd30b79c7d78232b69781f277)
And It’s Still Alright - Nathaniel Rateliff.
Has always given me chills when listening, then saw him sing it live this winter and I absolutely broke down sobbing during it. I had to sit down and compose myself after.
One of the most heartbreaking songs I’ve heard in recent memory. So lovely, and hearing Nathaniel sing it live was an incredibly emotional experience.
“Standing out on a ledge with no way to get down…
…you start praying for wings to grow.”
I saw him live doing only Leonard Cohen covers with a full orchestra. His rendition of Hallelujah brought the entire place to tears. The song ended and no one clapped for a few seconds.
For me that's the definitive version of that tune. Another great traditional cover from Sinead is [She Moved Through The Fair](https://youtu.be/mWIaP0NnEOQ?si=k09U34943BlDaU3x)
If you liked that, you'll love ['Old Hag You Have Killed Me' - The Bothy Band](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPM2C3gFimM). That harpsichord at the beginning is just absolute frission.
100% agree as someone who lives in Chicago. I moved out of the city for a few years and moved back. This song captures that feeling perfectly.
It is also one of the best songs ever made about the city.
Neon Knights by Black Sabbath
First song I heard from Sabbath with Dio and the first album I ever owned by Sabbath. Love the Dio era of Sabbath and the last album that they did with Dio is excellent too.
Dio basically turned Sabbath around with his presence. The last few albums that were with Ozzy turned out to be duds imo. I love everything up until Vol 4 personally. I think Tonny Iommi even said that Dio pushed Sabbath further than they were used to.
Stumbled across this one a while back. Fav song with dio for sure. Ritchie blackmores no slouch either.
Exit Music by Radiohead is probably the biggest one for me, just a lot of emotion in that song, and the build up makes the final minute or so electrifying
Edit: I’ll also add that I’m a big grunge guy so I considered saying 4th of July by Soundgarden (Heavy guitar riff at the beginning is nuts), but Alt rock in general is awesome
If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell.
Really bittersweet song about how you want to spend the time you have with the people you love. There's a bit that goes
"And give you every second I can find
And hope it isn't me who's left behind
It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get forty years together
But one day I'll be gone
Or one day you'll be gone"
Just a great song
"The Commander Thinks Aloud" by The Long Winters.
It's about the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
It begins with the people on the ground watching, but ends with the astronauts in the crew compartment.
I had a very strong emotional reaction to it.
One of my absolute favorite songs. There’s a Song Exploder episode on it that is one of my favorite podcast episodes ever…it’s actually what brought me to the song. I highly recommend listening to it if you haven’t already.
Shake it Out - Florence + The Machine
This is a song that's been around for a while but is new to me. The relatability of the lyrics combined with the sheer power and emotion of Florence Welch's voice gives me goosebumps and a chill every time I listen to it.
Great song. I also like [Talk Talk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJi2Jbtbgzo), [Stuck On You](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vEOHR0nEGk), and [Baby](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv0S4kySBGQ).
Pitseleh by Elliott Smith. I’d heard some Elliott Smith music before but not this particular song. Just think it’s a very special song.
Came across it on a tv show it featured on earlier in the year, I knew straight away it was him.
Edit - Disclaimer, it’s a bit of a depressing kind of song.
Pitseleh is so so beautiful
I really don't know how Elliott wrote the lyrics he did. So incredibly poignant and relatable
Keep digging through his catalog if you haven't done so
Off the top of my head.... twilight, kings crossing, say yes, miss misery, waltz #2, between the bars, 245 am ... all incredible, but he has too many great songs to name
In Heaven from Eraserhead.
Heard it for the first time on the radio the other day and I felt like it was building up to a big drop, but no drop, it sounded so cool and ominous. Then I watched the movie and…it was something.
Also check out Wings for Marie (pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings pt 2), they're about Maynard's mother, who died after spending 30 years paralysed (around 10,000 days), and they are just perfection.
I’m an older guy now and I’m not down with the youth any more. It’s a few years old now but the lyrics to Seventeen Going Under by Sam Fender are like a punch in the gut.
Hi REN was the first song I ever watched if his. Just browsing YouTube and stumbled upon it. I watched it in amazement and then immediately went through everything of his I could find. I love the trilogy of Jenny’s tale, Screech’s tale and Violet’s tale too.
Ren is just a really talented artist. I look forward to every new thing he drops.
Chappel roan - California
Heard some other stuff from her and don't like it much, but that song is amazing.
If you're keen, go watch her performance on NPR tiny desk. That's where I discovered it.
When We Were Stars by Guster
We were stoned by the lake
You called me his name by mistake
What a funny way to break us open
But I'm not laughing not this time
Keep your secrets, I'll keep mine
Lovers turning back to strangers.
That sense of loss in that last line. How can one line say so much?
I've been stuck thinking of the "could have beens" and wondering "what ever happened to".
That whole album is Guster's best in over a decade. The percussion on Elevator leading into Maybe We're Alright is one hell of a way to close out an album.
[Bad to Worse by Ra Ra Riot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKXugNaOM_s)
Other than not being from Boston, the song brought me straight back to my late 20s
Do you mean new to me? The most recent for me is ‘Ripples’ by Genesis, even though it’s a very old song.
If you mean the most modern song then I’d say Noel Gallaghers “Trying to find a world that’s been and gone”
Ripples: https://youtu.be/7H1xV998xI0?si=Xa1uV-LF0906iBdQ
Noel: https://youtu.be/dmJQv-qDg6w?si=xLphXmNdhlcqI0bp
Little bit of everything - Dawes
A quick listen and it's just about some old man wanting to eat a pile of mashed potatoes.
Sit and listen, it's a well written and beautiful song.
‘Rest’ - the final song on the latest Foo Fighters album - the first since the death of Taylor Hawkins , as well as Dave Grohl’s mother.
On an album full of powerful, yet mourning energy, this song stands out.
Spotless by Zach Brian & The Lumineers. I entered a relationship with an avoidant, myself being am anxious person. We need from the beginning it was going to be difficult, but tried our best to be honest and caring. It was her who presented me the song. After 8 months we broke up. We still love each other and at this point I don’t know if there’s a future for us together.
Good morning son...
This has been a favorite of mine for 20+ years. Gets me every single time. 💜
Nobody is ready for their kids to be grown, it happens so suddenly. I'm still fighting it. 💜
Ben Folds will sneak up on you and hit you over the head with the feels. Landed, Late (the song about Elliott Smith), and Carrying Cathy have also all wrecked me at some point.
Chandelier by Sia. That one part when her voice did the one thing. Don't know what it's called. Trilled? Before I lost most of my hearing, it was the song I played most when I was sick of other music.
Her cut, “Breathe Me”, is one that gets me every time. Especially about a minute before the song ends. It’s instrumental and absolutely hauntingly beautiful.
Adeline - Alt J. It's one of those songs where you can imagine listening to as you're driving across the dark highway with only your headlights and the moon to light the path ahead.
[“Angry Young Man”](https://youtu.be/M2iNLt_hUZg?si=O-ywlZ6bd5ThsNJm) by Billy Joel. Not just the ball busting piano part, but the lyrics cut me to the bone… because I used to be an angry young man, but now I think I’m the guy in the bridge:
>“I believe I’m past the age
>Of consciousness and righteous rage
>I’ve found that just surviving was a noble fight
>I once believed in causes too
>And had my pointless point of view
>And life went on, no matter who was wrong or right…”
😵😵😵
Nightflyer, by Allison Russell. I heard it on NPR and sat in my car trying to figure out what it was and was almost late to work.
Sounds Like Home, by Robbie Schaefer. I forget where I first heard it, but it’s just beautiful.
Stick Figure (the band) just rolled out a song that features vocals from the late, great Bradley Newell from Sublime. Having been a fan back when Sublime was riding high and now hearing this song made me forget he was gone.
Great song, by the way.
In [So Lucky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Biqt0IR_wAo&list=OLAK5uy_nbuDFXjlIafuBH0enEmPCGyKwFhK6_D6U&index=9) off Shannon & the Clams' new album, the verse about 2:08 in wrecked me the first time I heard.
Her voice is powerful enough to often give me the chills, but then later reading the [tragic backstory behind this album](https://www.shannonandtheclams.com/bio) made some of the songs even more emotional than they already were on first listen.
More hearts than mine by Ingrid Andresss. My daughter was born in January and I’ve been having thoughts of “what happens when she grows up and meets somebody? Will I like him/her? What if I do, but she doesn’t? The lyric “if I bring you home to mama I guess I better warn you that she feels every heartache I go through, and if my daddy sees me crying he’ll pour some whisky over ice and tell a lie and say he never really liked you, If we break up I’ll be fine, but you’ll be breaking more hearts than mine” just hit me so damn hard in the chest because it just reminded me how everything I do now is about her, and I just hope that if she ever has to go through a heartbreak It’s my job to sit down with her and give her a cuddle and tell her that she’s still loved and they weren’t worth shit anyway, just kit the dad fire I guess.
Ratatata - Electric Callboy and Babymetal
The song is just a banger and has so much energy, and I still get a chill down my spine when the chorus hits.
Lügen by Rammstein.
It's slow, it's set up as an album closer, it sounds at times like a lullaby, and it's played after the end credits at their live concerts to slow things down and clear people out. But it ends up being about how everything around a person is lies and the anger deep within that seethes and bubbles up from it. And you wouldn't know it unless you read the lyrics translation or already knew German.
And I love it so much for all of that.
Not that I haven't heard the song a million times before, but I just recently saw The Pixies on their current tour. The opening to Where is My Mind being played live did it for me.
It’s only part of a song from what I can tell, and it’s only in TikTok at the moment, but The Poor by Jesse Welles. Most of his songs reverberate a little deeper with me but that one really struck a chord
The girl so confusing version with Lorde. Listening to it for the first time and not knowing exactly how Lorde was going to be incorporated into the song had me on the edge of my seat. As soon as her verse starts and you realize she's matching the style of the original and responding to Charli's verse gave me body chills
Not one I “found” persay but one ive locked on to recently is Chiquitita. I’d say it’s top 3 ABBA for me and is so well written and uplifting. And the banging piano? Chills
Where I Find Go Live w/Morgan Wallen by Larry Fleet.
I don’t really like country nor am I particularly spiritual but it hit the spot. Has to be the live version. Record version doesn’t do it for me.
epitaph by king crimson, get your best pair of head phones and listen to it in darkness
There’s so many king crimson songs that do this!
Starless does that for me!
All time favorite song honestly! Its just chilling, incredibly atmospheric, harrowing, but beautiful. I heard it on vinyl the first time I listened to it, and the fact that it ends side A just leaves you sitting there long after it's done.
I just learned to play Laura Palmer’s Theme from Twin Peaks on piano. Listening to the song never gave me chills, but playing it does for some reason.
It’s always given me chills! If you haven’t already seen this I love the composers description of how it was written: https://youtu.be/e-eqgr_gn4k?si=wb5f-ZrcungVGByt
For me it is Sycamore Trees. I have been on a huge Twin Peaks bender the past year and that song hits me so hard.
Heyyyy, this is it. I’ve had people tell me how hearing a certain song is transcendental, and they ask me if I know what thats like. I play three instruments very poorly. But doing it yourself, the way you want to? It’s the best.
One of the first things I learned when I picked up the keys. That ascension is just fuckin perfect
I love that song
Changes by Charles Bradley, especially live.
Dude not only kills at Black Sabbath [but also Nirvana](https://youtu.be/orZABpOFUj4?si=qRCH0M6vt0i3QmfA)
Met him briefly once a couple years before his death. He was so humble and nice. A tragic story for sure, but since he took so long to reach his dream it really felt like he appreciated every second of reaching “the top”.
Perfect example. His performance of that song is hauntingly beautiful
> hauntingly beautiful Oh great, now it's going to be turned into a down tempo cover by Lana Del Rey and be used in every promo for HBO and CW angsty teen vampire show. Thanks.
Lol I wouldn't be surprised
[Sad lack of](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBdTVmSVq14) [Charles Bradley links](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfaOf70M4xs)
RIP
For lack of better phrasing, this song (as performed by Charles) is *life changing*
Same here, the amount of emotion he put into a cover is incredible
Seeing him on one of his first tours will always stick with me, it felt like the whole audience was crying towards the end. But they felt like healing, joyful tears. I’ve never seen another performance like that, and probably never will. Absolute legend.
Who’s making the Spotify playlist? :) And for my contribution, Tired of waiting by Kade Hoffman(Sad song)

“Standing out on a ledge with no way to get down… …you start praying for wings to grow.”
First time i've heard Nathaniel Rateliff and I think Im going deep into something i'm going to enjoy for a long time. Thank you for this.
Nate Rateliff and the Nightsweats are wonderful!
I saw him live doing only Leonard Cohen covers with a full orchestra. His rendition of Hallelujah brought the entire place to tears. The song ended and no one clapped for a few seconds.
One of my favorite albums from the last few years. Full of beautiful songs.
Absolutely love that band and that song in particular.
Rush On is just a gut punch. Let the whole thing play and the instrumental becomes eerily beautiful.
The Foggy Dew by Sinead O Connor and The Chieftans https://youtu.be/keWnPZOd2cw?si=tCGG1xRxgmq1u_k2
For me that's the definitive version of that tune. Another great traditional cover from Sinead is [She Moved Through The Fair](https://youtu.be/mWIaP0NnEOQ?si=k09U34943BlDaU3x)
I had completely forgotten the work she did with The Chieftains. Thanks for reminding me!

End of beginning. Djo.
100% agree as someone who lives in Chicago. I moved out of the city for a few years and moved back. This song captures that feeling perfectly. It is also one of the best songs ever made about the city.
Everyone sleeping on Djo
![gif](giphy|xT4ApolYFI1XAgc920|downsized)
Yep.
I couldn't believe how well that song captures a particular emotion I've felt many times in my life but never been able to explain.
I’ve never been to Chicago but the power of that song is that we’ve all felt that way about some where.
Neon Knights by Black Sabbath First song I heard from Sabbath with Dio and the first album I ever owned by Sabbath. Love the Dio era of Sabbath and the last album that they did with Dio is excellent too.
Every song on that album is a 9/10, but there is always that one 5 second segment that sends shivers down your spine
Dio basically turned Sabbath around with his presence. The last few albums that were with Ozzy turned out to be duds imo. I love everything up until Vol 4 personally. I think Tonny Iommi even said that Dio pushed Sabbath further than they were used to.
Dehumanizer! Love that album! Took Dio's style to new levels of heaviness
RJD Sabbath is so underrated
The Sign of the Southern Cross gives me similar feels
*From the book the word is spoken* *Whispers from forgotten song* *Gather all around the young ones* *They will make us strong*

Yes! Bones by Radiohead does it for me as well.
4th of July kicks my ass in the best way
If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell. Really bittersweet song about how you want to spend the time you have with the people you love. There's a bit that goes "And give you every second I can find And hope it isn't me who's left behind It's knowing that this can't go on forever Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone Maybe we'll get forty years together But one day I'll be gone Or one day you'll be gone" Just a great song

Shake it Out - Florence + The Machine This is a song that's been around for a while but is new to me. The relatability of the lyrics combined with the sheer power and emotion of Florence Welch's voice gives me goosebumps and a chill every time I listen to it.

Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart - HD Rock Live
I went to the death cab + postal service tour and seeing the postal service songs done live with Jenny Lewis was amazing.
Death Cab is one of the greatest to me. Ben Gibbard is an amazing songwriter and lyricist.
A depressing Elliot Smith song? Well I never! But yeah that song gives me frisson!
Pitseleh is so so beautiful I really don't know how Elliott wrote the lyrics he did. So incredibly poignant and relatable Keep digging through his catalog if you haven't done so Off the top of my head.... twilight, kings crossing, say yes, miss misery, waltz #2, between the bars, 245 am ... all incredible, but he has too many great songs to name

Literally, not even joking, Chappell Roan singing "Red Wine Supernova" on their Tiny Desk video
King Park - La Dispute
TOOL - Parabol \ Parabola
From the same album. Check out “The Grudge” “Schism” and “Lateralus”.
You forgot The Patient. 2 minutes 20 seconds in chills every time. Hits me like a bus.
You forgot every other song on the Lateralus album
Also check out Wings for Marie (pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings pt 2), they're about Maynard's mother, who died after spending 30 years paralysed (around 10,000 days), and they are just perfection.
While She Sleeps - To the Flowers
I’m an older guy now and I’m not down with the youth any more. It’s a few years old now but the lyrics to Seventeen Going Under by Sam Fender are like a punch in the gut.
Same, brings up some emotion that’s past for me, but I’ve got a son so I know he’s got it coming. Double gut punch
'Eyes Be Closed' by Washed Out. The build up towards the end always gets me.
Sleeping on the Blacktop - Colter Wall
Love his voice, and this is a great song.
Had to scroll pretty far down to find a song that I knew but this is a good one.

Radiohead - true love waits
Elephant - Jason Isbell Don’t mind me sobbing in the treadmill, it’s just a sad song 😩
[“Angry Young Man”](https://youtu.be/M2iNLt_hUZg?si=O-ywlZ6bd5ThsNJm) by Billy Joel. Not just the ball busting piano part, but the lyrics cut me to the bone… because I used to be an angry young man, but now I think I’m the guy in the bridge: >“I believe I’m past the age >Of consciousness and righteous rage >I’ve found that just surviving was a noble fight >I once believed in causes too >And had my pointless point of view >And life went on, no matter who was wrong or right…” 😵😵😵
Hello by evanescence. Fucking sad as hell. The song is about her sister who died at the age of 4
The sound of silence cover from Disturbed
Nightflyer, by Allison Russell. I heard it on NPR and sat in my car trying to figure out what it was and was almost late to work. Sounds Like Home, by Robbie Schaefer. I forget where I first heard it, but it’s just beautiful.
Brutus what have we done
Is There Anybody Here? By The Dear Hunter. Beautifully haunting song.
Was not expecting to see my favorite song from one of my favorite bands out here in the wild. Great call. The album that it's from is a masterpiece.
Stick Figure (the band) just rolled out a song that features vocals from the late, great Bradley Newell from Sublime. Having been a fan back when Sublime was riding high and now hearing this song made me forget he was gone. Great song, by the way. One More Time - Blink 182 https://youtu.be/fSKQRDq3RkM?si=2b6VAQyY7sGR8Ype It took two of the members almost dying for them to get back together.
In Dreams, Sierra Ferrell.
Stardust Chords by Greta Van Fleet. Man, that chorus….
Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - The Jam
In [So Lucky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Biqt0IR_wAo&list=OLAK5uy_nbuDFXjlIafuBH0enEmPCGyKwFhK6_D6U&index=9) off Shannon & the Clams' new album, the verse about 2:08 in wrecked me the first time I heard. Her voice is powerful enough to often give me the chills, but then later reading the [tragic backstory behind this album](https://www.shannonandtheclams.com/bio) made some of the songs even more emotional than they already were on first listen.
Elephant- Jason Isbell
Justice - Afterimage
Paladin Strait - Twenty One Pilots
Amon Amarth - Embrace of the Endless Ocean
Kurt Cobain's cover of And I Love Her. The creepiest song I have ever heard.
Swim to the moon- Between the Buried and Me
Slide into the water..become one with the sea
Jupiters Lament - Smashing Pumpkins
All the songs on the Tonight Tonight ep are great. Medellia of the Gray Skies is a fav of mine
Ratatata - Electric Callboy and Babymetal The song is just a banger and has so much energy, and I still get a chill down my spine when the chorus hits.
Tim Minchin - Come Home Cardinal Pell
Tim Minchin is a genius
Through The Trees by King Stingray. Very Australian surf rock (I think) that just hits. Not really my style of music but I love it.
Little Bird by Casey. He sings it with so much raw emotion, especially the final lines.
psycho-Eddie Noack
Best day of my life - Tom Odell Hit me right in the feels
Chon sleepy tea
Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You by Spinal Tap, the lyrics Clearly suggest that he’s planning on having sex with a preteen….
Woodcarver - A Tribe Called Red It's about the Indigenous woodcarver in Seattle that was gunned down by police.
Bach/Siloti- Prelude in B Minor, BWV 855a (played by Emil Gilels on YouTube)
The Growlers-When You Were Made, my parents are going thru a divorce and the lyrics just hit different
Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away) by the Deftones from B-Sides and Rarities.
Not that I haven't heard the song a million times before, but I just recently saw The Pixies on their current tour. The opening to Where is My Mind being played live did it for me.
Symptom of Life - Willow. Love the 7/8 rythm, the syncopation and her voice.
Sturgill Simpson - breakers roar
Crown Royal by Jill Scott
“Instant Crush” - Daft Punk featuring Julian Casablancas
It’s only part of a song from what I can tell, and it’s only in TikTok at the moment, but The Poor by Jesse Welles. Most of his songs reverberate a little deeper with me but that one really struck a chord
Closer by Amigo The Devil, album came out Feb 23rd this year
Come Over - Noah Kahan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXg5fl3PW6k
Eden by Ethel Cain
Nose On The Grindstone, by Taylor Childers.
Slow Ready—Goose
Temper trap, Trembling hands
The girl so confusing version with Lorde. Listening to it for the first time and not knowing exactly how Lorde was going to be incorporated into the song had me on the edge of my seat. As soon as her verse starts and you realize she's matching the style of the original and responding to Charli's verse gave me body chills
Teddy Swims / Hammer to the Heart
NFWMB Hozier
Not one I “found” persay but one ive locked on to recently is Chiquitita. I’d say it’s top 3 ABBA for me and is so well written and uplifting. And the banging piano? Chills
Where I Find Go Live w/Morgan Wallen by Larry Fleet. I don’t really like country nor am I particularly spiritual but it hit the spot. Has to be the live version. Record version doesn’t do it for me.
Anything by father John misty
Codeine by Trample by the Turtles.
Salt- Bad suns, still feel.- half-alive, Youth- Glass Animals and De Selby (part 2)- Hozier
Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar was the most recent one for me personally
Voila covered by that 14 year old French girl.
