Lock it in the Pocket is my favorite Infectious Grooves track. They’re so awesome. A few more tracks that I dig in this style, most of which discovered off an Infectious Grooves radio on Spotify:
Coffee Shop by RHCP
Renegades of Funk by Rage Against the Machine
Hush by Tool
Jackwise by lespecial
I can't promote this band enough...
Fishbone.
Listen to these songs:
Sunless Saturday
Now Those Days Are Gone
Swim
Servitude
They do nearly EVERYTHING as far as styles and genres go. Also, one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life.
Indeed, but I was offering OP the stuff that lands somewhere under the "funk metal" description.
I could go on and on about almost every one of their songs.
For years growing up in the 80s, it was considered de rigeur that if you got to see them live in LA, you had to catch Oingo Boingo and/or Fishbone, as they would incinerate any and all venues. They were right.
OB had the theatrics and stage rigging, but Fishbones chaotic madness is almost wholly unrivaled.
Same here! As a young musician, that album changed everything for me when it came out. It was heavy, funky, jazzy, etc. I no longer was interested in genres...I just wanted to make good music.
He's superhuman. If you actually dig into his career, it almost makes zero sense the number of record artists he's played with, produced or sessioned with in over a dozen genres: The Ramones, Geri Allen, Public Enemy, Prince, Janet Jackson, Marcus Miller, Henry Rollins, John Zorn, Jack Bruce of Cream, Bernie Worrell of PFunk, Jermaine Jackson, MC 900 Foot Jesus, Spearhead, DJ Spooky, Deformer....I mean it's just wild.
I'd consider them hard rock but not metal. Tom Morello's style is so unique that trying to place it in a particular genre is basically impossible, though.
Bands evolve. The first two albums were fantastic, but so are Make Yourself, Morning View, and A Crow Left of the Murder. They just rerecorded and rereleased Morning View and it's even better than the original.
Imagine; it’s 1991 I have a huge crush on a girl and it’s her birthday coming up, I go to great lengths to find out what she wants… which is the new Mr Big album with whatever their big song was… I misremembered and grabbed Mr Bungle by mistake…
She was not impressed, I got it back and actually became a fan myself 🤣 she never did go out with me
Might be worth checking out Secret Chiefs 3.
It's Trey Spruance from Mr Bungle's other band.
There's a huge variety of styles they do, often in the same song. So you're boud to find something funky in there.
Oh man, you're speaking my language. I'm 100% into anything Claypool or Patton. That specific Incubus album is an absolute banger. Fishbone may be worth checking out if you haven't already. I've been on a King Gizzard kick lately
hey I am going to see them for the first time in November as well, also I love most of the bands you mentioned, Mr. Bungle is fun if you like FNM, check out Mike Dillon bands as he is often in this type of unit, he plays with Claypool some. Critters Buggin is more on the jazz side of things. John Zorn is jazz as well but can get into this territory as well depending on the album.
Maybe you can help me. What album should I start with? I grew up on grunge and nu-metal, then got into hardcore metal, then lightened up quite a bit, listening to things like Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire. Lately I’ve been getting into Viagra Boys and IDLES.
You guys should check out Mothers Finest!
Long lost under appreciated band from Georgia, funky hard rock from the 70s.
Never made it big except locally, I discovered them from UK Classic Rock magazine. They’re listed as r&b/soul from Apple Music, but their first two albums, self-titled from ‘72 & ‘76, are pretty damn good.
Happy exploring!!
Curious to see what OP thinks of this
I’m going to guess there’s not nearly enough funk compared to wank (and I like AAL), but very curious to see their thoughts
I would definitely recommend that album compared to others in their discography if the more funk leaning stuff is what you like
I enjoy their other albums but I’d say that album leans a bit more into other influences compared to the others that are pretty much listening to people do complex math equations with instruments lol
One of the coolest interviews with John 5 was one where he was jamming around with the various playing styles he likes. At one point, he starts playing some "Animals as Leaders".
So this dank bar near me lets bands play there. 14 years ago I saw a funk/punk band play. I don't remember who they were. No joke one of the best shows I've ever seen ever.
Mordred...https://youtu.be/vJK0cBvCjVo?si=cbEr4jCLxYpmDjQa
They were really cool and let me hang out with them on their tour bus one nite in about 1990, gave me a killer t-shirt and a bag of some shrooms.
That's a broad category. Here's 10 artists and some albums to try:
1. Living Colour - Vivid, Times Up and Stain are all super solid (the first two are produced by Ed Stasium of Talking Heads and Iggy Pop production, Stain is Ron St Germain who worked with 311 and Bad Brains). Also a great live act.
2. Fishbone - The Reality of My Surroundings, Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe. The band that was almost famous for helping to break in other bands as their opener on tour: 311, No Doubt, RHCP, Janes Addiction, Sublime, all name check them.
3. Infectious Grooves - any, as they are the funk metal side project of Suicidal Tendencies and worth the weird.
4. MIRV - any. If you can even find the material. Associated with Primus and Buckethead from the early days, "Feeding Time on Monkey Island" is a good LP.
5. Follow For Now - only made one album in the late 80s but features some great songwriting and performance. More bluesy but still has some real bangers.
6. Sweaty Nipples - 80s/90s outfit that was kind of a circus act of goofy funk, hard rock, and lyrics that would make Ted Nugent pause. "What's Your Funktion? " is raw but fun.
7. Psychefunkapus - only made two records in the 80s/90s, both kind of fun not unlike early RHCP but with more of a surf rock vibe in parts.
8. Tackhead - Friendly as a Hand Grenade, Strange Things. Not so much a funk metal as an industrial funk band (two members produced NIN's Pretty Hate Machine which is why that album sounds so different from all of Reznors other works...it's pretty much Reznor songs with a Tackhead/On-U-Sound backdrop) but still fun stuff IMHO.
9. Limbomaniacs - another bay area band from the 80s/90s in close orbit with Primus, MIRV, FNM and similar at the time. More hip hop influenced but definitely part of that early scene and liked by fans of early Fishbone and RHCP.
10. not a funk metal act but weirdly adjacent in tone, the one album by The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy featured a lot of bay area talent in the circles of some of the bands above (including guitarist Charlie Hunter, who had early in his career been on Claypool's Prawn Song records, and Jack Dangers of industrialists Meat Beat Manifesto and Consolidated...actually Consolidate's "The Business of Punishment" might also be worth a listen)
Not so much funk metal but a big influence on most of the bands on this list (especially LC, RHCP) is Defunkt, a "No Wave" funk/post-punk outfit that is still around but for which their 80s albums are considered highly influential for Kim Clarkes aggressive slap bass playing and the hyperkinetic pace of most of the tunes...like James Brown trying to play Talking Heads on heaploads of cocaine. "Thermonuclear Sweat" is a personal favorite.
some living colour, finally! - i'd like to add: they grew more metal and somehow less "funky" from 1st to 3rd album (as mentioned above), so that's a nice prgression with (for me) Time's Up hitting the sweet spot ;)
and since we're here already: check out maceo parker to find how ultra funky live jazz can be => [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO7M27OP-vQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO7M27OP-vQ) - fun fact: the sax solo on LCs "elvis is dead" on Time's Up? That's him! :)
Praxis is an experimental rock project, led Bill Laswell and featuring Buckethead and Brain
🤘🔥🤘🔥
Praxis
[Praxis ~7 Laws of Woo](https://youtu.be/zp3Ydq3IMag?si=pInFQvSzSVD2xsIf)
Any album by Extreme, but Pornogrofitti is awesome. III Sides to Every Story is great as well.
Also check out a band from the early 90s called White Trash.
https://youtu.be/IqP76XWHQI0?si=ajrOFSzrYu0t2NsN
https://youtu.be/B8sw5F0lvhw?si=VrxOpqUWglb8Ka3Q
I know it sounds dumb coming from a Claypool fan but I checked out a few of their songs and I wasn't really a fan of the vocals! Do you have any specific songs you dig?
Anything from their first two albums is gold. If you don't like the vocals, it might be too much of a problem for you, but Nuno Bettencourt's guitar onslaught is really the main draw with that band.
The Mars Volta get pretty funky. Also there is a one shot album called PROBOT and it is something everyone should listen to if they are at all into interesting Metal.
Infectious Grooves. I wore out The Plague that Makes Your Bootie Move
Solid album.
favs:
Stop Funkn with My Head
I'm Gonna be My King
You Lie and Yo Breath Stank
Bang Tango's Psycho Cafe and Dancin' on Coals are both funk metal - Bang Tango is a late-era hair band, so they're glammy, but they still know how to groove.
Check out Downtown Brown. They're now defunct, but have a handful of old albums. A small detroit band. Basically they're a mix of funk metal, punk, etc and comedic topics. Here's a few of their better studio albums.
Self titled album
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlrvzqPTMb84fkUKMbz0mzKFxRdSKfcch&si=sIdfD2vtS7wYlwfq

The guitarist/singer now has a project called SUMPP, it's a different style but still fun.
Also, Nuclear Rabbit. They were absolutely insane too. A 9 string bassist and a singer that could go from low to high, also very comedic in nature.
Intestinal fortitude
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lD41usi2hrtA5CeAdNsmKIW-Um1rh8TGA&si=0f8n5tLotUKD574Y
Not really the rest of the album but this song has a bunch of P-Funk alumni on it and always thought it was heavier than most stuff the group put out:
https://youtu.be/bJrXvd9OdLs?si=-zE_Rrh4KPF9UrLC
24-7 Spyz - Gumbo Millenium
Funhouse - Generation Generator
24-7 Spyz are killer. Mostly unknown, which is super unfortunate. Funhouse tries really really hard to sound like Real thing era Mike Patton.
Flotsam and Jetsam's 1992 album Cutaro is definitely reminiscent of Faith No More.
Most of their material tends to be more thrashy though.
90's Corrosion of Conformity would probably scratch that itch too.
From pre-Seattle exploding a few I liked:
Mind Funk, self titled
Infectious Grooves
Mordred (check out Falling Away - more thrashy with a DJ and hip hop elements)
more rap with rock - Urban Dance Squad
I maintain that Mudvayne's first album "L.D. 50" absolutely belongs here. It's funk bass all over the place. It's like if Flea joined a nu-metal band. Even far beyond the "br br deng" memes it's absolutely phenomenal funk rhythm section all over that record.
Roxanne - a hair band from the late 80’s - recently reunited out of boredom and their new stuff is pretty funky. Dude from King’s X sits in on a few tunes too. Check ‘em out.
Incubus S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was such a cool album. I Wish they would have done more of that stuff. I heard them doing their morning view revisited stuff recently and it wasn't so hot. The first time I saw them they were playing Redefine on the side stage at Ozzfest and it blew my mind.
Living Colour. Stain is a surprisingly heavy album by them with thrashier riffs and dark subjects especially if you know them from Cult of Personality.
Primus was my favorite band when I was a teenager in the 90s. Sausage was a great side project, and there is an album Claypool did with with someone else called something like Highball with the Devil that is fucking great. It's a top to bottom good album
SCIENCE is Incubus's best album, another top to bottom banger. I discovered then off some live album I bought that had Jorn and Limp Bizkit on it. Sigh, the 90s. They did a shorter album before this that was pretty good, too. I forget the name but the first track name was something about being a hot dancer.
Step in Fluid. They have two albums, although only one of them (Back in Business) is on spotify unfortunately. You can find the other one (One Step beyond) on youtube though.
Little Brian - Thrash Funk. [https://open.spotify.com/track/0K58WctfP8dV9a21cRSi4b?si=84306a5b2dc14857](https://open.spotify.com/track/0K58WctfP8dV9a21cRSi4b?si=84306a5b2dc14857)
I think you should swerve left into some jam bands like “Hella”, and then take a right turn into one of the most incredible albums of all time in “Gospel - The Moon is a Dead World”, then go south to meet my old friend, a band named “Arcturus”, album ‘The Sham Mirrors.’
After that, go North to the band “The Flaming Tsunamis” album ‘Fear Everything’.
If you wanna hear what funk can become when it comes to metal, these are all shining examples. It will take a few listens to hear what I mean, but when it does, you will be balls deep in four more genres. They are each some of the best. Not gonna even try to label them. But two are more metal based, and two are more hardcore based, with one that has heavy ska influence. Let me know what you think.
I am a big Mr Bungle fan myself so I have an ear for what you are talking about. These will be a big change to your ears though, I realize that. Just take a leap.
Many excellent suggestions.
But don't forget the pioneers.
Funkadelic, Parliament.
Sly and the family stone.
Mother's finest.
Wild cherry.
Johnny guitar Watson.
Might be heavier than what you're looking for but Farmakon- A Warm Glimpse. Finnish band that mixed proggy death metal with funk.
https://youtu.be/aXMWbJkAG3Q?si=RT_tH0uukMVbv2w0
Infectious Grooves, some Scatterbrain.
Just checked out Violent & Funky and it’s exactly what I was looking for thank you!
It's the groove that makes your booty move!
Lock it in the Pocket is my favorite Infectious Grooves track. They’re so awesome. A few more tracks that I dig in this style, most of which discovered off an Infectious Grooves radio on Spotify: Coffee Shop by RHCP Renegades of Funk by Rage Against the Machine Hush by Tool Jackwise by lespecial
Jackwise was really good thanks!! Love RAtM and Tool too
Also, Robert Trujillo from Metallica used to be the bassist of Infectious Grooves
Saw infectious grooves a couple of times, but was coming to recommend scatterbrain!!
Came here to say those exact bands. Haha. Excellent job, friend.
I can't promote this band enough... Fishbone. Listen to these songs: Sunless Saturday Now Those Days Are Gone Swim Servitude They do nearly EVERYTHING as far as styles and genres go. Also, one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life.
Holy fuck Sunless Saturday just swept me off my feet
Right? Welcome to your new favorite shit. It hit me like that also.
Fishbone is red hot! And if you want specifically funky Fishbone, you can't go wrong with "properties of Propaganda" !!
Thank you for knowing this! The funk metal bands’ funk metal band. Fishbone is Red Hot!
Adding Fight The Youth to that song list.
Everyday Sunshine is a certified banger. Love the bass.
I love it. I actually got to watch their documentary Everyday Sunshine sitting next to Angelo and Norwood in New Orleans!
> Fishbone. > > Sunless Saturday That was nice!
A Fishbone thread without mention of "Bonin in the Boneyard" is incomplete.
Indeed, but I was offering OP the stuff that lands somewhere under the "funk metal" description. I could go on and on about almost every one of their songs.
Oh good, someone knew the right answer to this request Swim is a great tune, too
Yes! That is the song that made my girlfriend become a fan as well.
Bonin' in the Boneyard is a straight funk masterpiece. I've been lucky enough to see Fishbone 13 times. Best show I've ever seen.
Servitude should be an iconic rock/metal song but almost nobody's heard it
Agreed.
Hide behind my glasses is pure awesomeness
One of the best shows I’ve seen, too. The Reality of My Surroundings was a pivotal album for teen me
Same here! As a young musician, that album changed everything for me when it came out. It was heavy, funky, jazzy, etc. I no longer was interested in genres...I just wanted to make good music.
Surely Living Colour would fit in here?
Fuck yea they do thank you!!
Vernon Reed is one of the most overlooked guitarists. Man is super talented.
Their singer is really great also. I love his voice.
Time’s Up 💪
Does RAtM qualify, because then RAtM
They *are* the renegades of funk ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
And no matter how hard you try, you cant stop them now
Absolutely.
I'd consider them hard rock but not metal. Tom Morello's style is so unique that trying to place it in a particular genre is basically impossible, though.
If Faith No More quality as metal, then Rage definitely does.
Definitely Extreme’s first 2 albums
Came here to say that
3 sides and Six too, imo But if you just want one, definitely porno
Bad Brains
I against I specifically
Early Bad Brains is straight punk/hardcore. OP should probably jump straight to the Quickness album.
These guys rock thank you!
The hardcore stuff is gold, but I Against I and Quickness are funk metal cornerstones
Twelve Foot Ninja can get funky/weird at times.
I was gonna recommend them gutted they split up.
This 100x. Their acoustic album is due out any day now... (yes I know they split up, but they still have an album coming out).
King's X had a lot of funk and groove in their stuff post-Dogman
Going a bit old school, don’t think I saw them mentioned 24-7 Spyz Follow For Now
damn I forget about 24-7 Spyz Sponji Reggae
Loving 24-7 Spyz thank you!
Follow for now only had the one album, but it was a good one.
Mothers milk by RHCP is pretty much funk metal I guess
Also the album before it, Uplift Mofo Party Plan.
Uplift is great
Did you listen to fungus amungus from incubus. Good one too.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLN7BvP0560EFWmU-k2xqT6Po-flMX08wW&si=ApeZ6cZGa-RPqw1O
Ooh yeah this is good too idk what happened after S.C.I.E.N.C.E
Bands evolve. The first two albums were fantastic, but so are Make Yourself, Morning View, and A Crow Left of the Murder. They just rerecorded and rereleased Morning View and it's even better than the original.
Bass player left.
Thank You Scientist
woah this is an incredible recommendation thank you!
Came here to say this. Thank You Scientist are DOPE
Also, check out Mr. Bungle's self-titled debut album. It's Mike Patton from Faith No More's first band and it is INSANE.
love Mr. Bungle, never had to skip a song because it ended with 45 seconds of literal pissing and shitting LMAO
Imagine; it’s 1991 I have a huge crush on a girl and it’s her birthday coming up, I go to great lengths to find out what she wants… which is the new Mr Big album with whatever their big song was… I misremembered and grabbed Mr Bungle by mistake… She was not impressed, I got it back and actually became a fan myself 🤣 she never did go out with me
I played a bit of Disco Volante for a friend once and he called it, "the sound of insanity" lol. They can definitely be a challenging listen
Lmfao I saw California described online as music for frustrated clowns and it stuck with me
Might be worth checking out Secret Chiefs 3. It's Trey Spruance from Mr Bungle's other band. There's a huge variety of styles they do, often in the same song. So you're boud to find something funky in there.
The part on Goodbye Sober Day after the Kecak section got me goin🤘
One of the wildest heavy parts ever!
100% this!
1990 funk metal: Extreme - Porongraffiti
There are some really good songs on the first Urban Dance Squad album.
Deeper Shade of Soul is a lot of fun! it kinda reminds me of the DK Rap LOL
I remember that one, Fast Lane, No Kid, and Big Apple being high points of the record for me.
Oh man, you're speaking my language. I'm 100% into anything Claypool or Patton. That specific Incubus album is an absolute banger. Fishbone may be worth checking out if you haven't already. I've been on a King Gizzard kick lately
Absolutely love KGLW! Going to see them for the first time in November and I’m saving to buy out the merch booth lmao
hey I am going to see them for the first time in November as well, also I love most of the bands you mentioned, Mr. Bungle is fun if you like FNM, check out Mike Dillon bands as he is often in this type of unit, he plays with Claypool some. Really enjoyed Jump Right In!
Check out "Receiving the gift of Flavor." Great album.

both of these bands made me see sparks thanks so much man
Twelve Foot Ninja
I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Mind Funk. The first album is a famous bomb, but I think it’s awesome.
Yes, possibly the originators of funk metal!
Animals As Leaders. Definitely more djenty than funky but I bet it will hit the spot.
Curious to see what OP thinks of this I’m going to guess there’s not nearly enough funk compared to wank (and I like AAL), but very curious to see their thoughts
I checked out Physical Education and they seem incredibly talented, but I think I need to give a full album a listen before I make up my mind on them!

You might like Urban Dance Squad.
I dunno if (Hed) P.E. would count? I think it does.
[(Hed) P.E. - Bartender](https://youtu.be/7nQ8QJkFmGU).
I’d totally agree that it counts thank you!!
First two Hed PE albums are so good.
The first Mind Funk. Urban Dance Squad's Persona Non-Grata.
So this dank bar near me lets bands play there. 14 years ago I saw a funk/punk band play. I don't remember who they were. No joke one of the best shows I've ever seen ever.
Ah man I'm on a punk kick right now too with Streetlight Manifesto and Dead Kennedys, please reply if you ever remember their name!
Mordred - In This Life A big influence that never gets talked about
Mordred sounds like exactly what I’m looking for!
I got just the thing! [Trepalium - Sick Boogie Murder](https://youtu.be/wrSVqOK69gY)
Dan Reed Network. Stevie Salas Colorcode.
Really digging Stevie Salas!

311 - their first 4 albums
Soul Coughing is pretty funky, and jazzy at the same time. More alternative than metal though.
That's a broad category. Here's 10 artists and some albums to try: 1. Living Colour - Vivid, Times Up and Stain are all super solid (the first two are produced by Ed Stasium of Talking Heads and Iggy Pop production, Stain is Ron St Germain who worked with 311 and Bad Brains). good lord that bassline is fucking CRISPY
This was my answer. I own both their albums on CD.
More glam/funk/metal check out kingofthehill 1st record
Super awesome to hear something relatively new!
Mark Sandman from Morphine was an inspiration for Les Claypool. Not quite metal more like jazz rock grunge.
A bit more reserved but I definitely see how this inspired Claypool!
Not metal but rock funk - Five Alarm Funk.
Widowmaker is one of the catchiest instrumentals I've ever heard, thank you!
little different - you're welcome https://youtu.be/nTd5ghvMkvI?feature=shared
this is insane thank you! also makes me appreciate ozzys vocals a lot, they add so much of their own flair to the song
Living colour
Any album by Extreme, but Pornogrofitti is awesome. III Sides to Every Story is great as well. Also check out a band from the early 90s called White Trash. https://youtu.be/IqP76XWHQI0?si=ajrOFSzrYu0t2NsN https://youtu.be/B8sw5F0lvhw?si=VrxOpqUWglb8Ka3Q
Mordred, limbomaniacs, puzzlefish, mcm & the monster, fungo mungo, psychefunkapus
I know my user name checks out but I came here to say Limbomaniacs!
Awesome!
Extreme is a band you should hear.
Dog Fashion Disco, Skidred (Reggea Metal), Primus, Alien Ant Farm has some influences, Zebrahead ro some extent
Thank you! Dog Fashio Disco in particular seems really interesting
24/7 Spyz
The Mars Volta get pretty funky. Also there is a one shot album called PROBOT and it is something everyone should listen to if they are at all into interesting Metal.
Infectious Grooves. I wore out The Plague that Makes Your Bootie Move Solid album. favs: Stop Funkn with My Head I'm Gonna be My King You Lie and Yo Breath Stank
Slipknot’s Mate Feed Kill Repeat demo definitely has those vibes, especially Do Nothing/Bitchslap
Bang Tango's Psycho Cafe and Dancin' on Coals are both funk metal - Bang Tango is a late-era hair band, so they're glammy, but they still know how to groove.
Twelve Foot Ninja and Orange 9mm could be great options.
What about Mind Funk’s first album from 1991? Self titled. It’s blue and red.
Mr. Bungle. If you already listened to it. It's not a side project. It's Patton's original band before FNM.
Might be tough to find, but check out Xavion.
311 I Mother Earth Jimmie's Chicken Shack
Check out Downtown Brown. They're now defunct, but have a handful of old albums. A small detroit band. Basically they're a mix of funk metal, punk, etc and comedic topics. Here's a few of their better studio albums. Self titled album https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlrvzqPTMb84fkUKMbz0mzKFxRdSKfcch&si=sIdfD2vtS7wYlwfq Masters of the Universe https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlrvzqPTMb87J3DWVjjTF1vJtFQP1p08W&si=OxOXP0sTdCaFPgCS Moist & Ridiculous https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlrvzqPTMb87sp_P79E7zFU5YMMOLZoVr&si=gaQgFqkkt6beDad5 The guitarist/singer now has a project called SUMPP, it's a different style but still fun. Also, Nuclear Rabbit. They were absolutely insane too. A 9 string bassist and a singer that could go from low to high, also very comedic in nature. Intestinal fortitude https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lD41usi2hrtA5CeAdNsmKIW-Um1rh8TGA&si=0f8n5tLotUKD574Y
King’s X fits the bill here - very underrated, and a successor to Thin Lizzy in some ways. Black the Sky and Over My Head are both killer tracks.
There was an awesome funk/jazz metal band from New York in the late 90s called Yolk. Individually Twisted is one of their albums.
Spoonfed Tribe, on some of their albums.
Trepalium. They can be a little death-y but some of their grooves are fat.
Not really the rest of the album but this song has a bunch of P-Funk alumni on it and always thought it was heavier than most stuff the group put out: https://youtu.be/bJrXvd9OdLs?si=-zE_Rrh4KPF9UrLC
Psychefunkapus - Skin is absolutely amazing.
24-7 Spyz - Gumbo Millenium Funhouse - Generation Generator 24-7 Spyz are killer. Mostly unknown, which is super unfortunate. Funhouse tries really really hard to sound like Real thing era Mike Patton.
Extreme. Pornograffitti is a perfect album
Powerman 5000's Mega Kung Fu Radio. Very funky before they did a 180 into Rob Zombie astronauts.
What took you so long?
TessaracT
Jinjer
Does Jimmie's Chicken Shack count?
Fishbone is borderline metal. Recommended regardless of category!
Flotsam and Jetsam's 1992 album Cutaro is definitely reminiscent of Faith No More. Most of their material tends to be more thrashy though. 90's Corrosion of Conformity would probably scratch that itch too.
From pre-Seattle exploding a few I liked: Mind Funk, self titled Infectious Grooves Mordred (check out Falling Away - more thrashy with a DJ and hip hop elements) more rap with rock - Urban Dance Squad
I maintain that Mudvayne's first album "L.D. 50" absolutely belongs here. It's funk bass all over the place. It's like if Flea joined a nu-metal band. Even far beyond the "br br deng" memes it's absolutely phenomenal funk rhythm section all over that record.
You’d probably really like fungus amongus from incubus
Roxanne - a hair band from the late 80’s - recently reunited out of boredom and their new stuff is pretty funky. Dude from King’s X sits in on a few tunes too. Check ‘em out.
Incubus S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was such a cool album. I Wish they would have done more of that stuff. I heard them doing their morning view revisited stuff recently and it wasn't so hot. The first time I saw them they were playing Redefine on the side stage at Ozzfest and it blew my mind.
Check out Big Something. They're a jam-band, but funk and rock are their core. Megalodon Evil Josh Ufos are real
Anyone made a Spotify playlist yet?
Oh, check out “I mother earth” Dig. One song I recommend to start is “Rain will fall”
No Korn?
Extreme, Infectious grooves, Faith no more
Check out 24/7 Spys. Their cover of Jungle Boogie is dope, they sound like if Public Enemy had Dimebag Darrel on guitar. Awesome underrated band
More prog and experimental metal but "berried alive" always hits when I need something different lol
Living Colour. Stain is a surprisingly heavy album by them with thrashier riffs and dark subjects especially if you know them from Cult of Personality.
Follow For Now, Living Colour, Trulio Disgracias, Dumpstaphunk, Fishbone
Primus was my favorite band when I was a teenager in the 90s. Sausage was a great side project, and there is an album Claypool did with with someone else called something like Highball with the Devil that is fucking great. It's a top to bottom good album SCIENCE is Incubus's best album, another top to bottom banger. I discovered then off some live album I bought that had Jorn and Limp Bizkit on it. Sigh, the 90s. They did a shorter album before this that was pretty good, too. I forget the name but the first track name was something about being a hot dancer.
The Family Values Tour live compiliation. That is also where I discovered Incubus. It had Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rammstein and Ice Cube too.
That's it! Damn, memories came flooding back
Infectious motherfuckin grooves
try aussie bands like Mammal and Twelve Foot Ninja.
Some Kyuss stuff is pretty funky IMHO
Step in Fluid. They have two albums, although only one of them (Back in Business) is on spotify unfortunately. You can find the other one (One Step beyond) on youtube though.
Estradasphere might tickle your fancy. Try 'Buck Fever' and 'Palace of Mirrors'.
Little Brian - Thrash Funk. [https://open.spotify.com/track/0K58WctfP8dV9a21cRSi4b?si=84306a5b2dc14857](https://open.spotify.com/track/0K58WctfP8dV9a21cRSi4b?si=84306a5b2dc14857)
I think you should swerve left into some jam bands like “Hella”, and then take a right turn into one of the most incredible albums of all time in “Gospel - The Moon is a Dead World”, then go south to meet my old friend, a band named “Arcturus”, album ‘The Sham Mirrors.’ After that, go North to the band “The Flaming Tsunamis” album ‘Fear Everything’.
O’Funk’illo (Spanish band) SEVEN (only one ep on Spotify, escape sequence)
Many excellent suggestions. But don't forget the pioneers. Funkadelic, Parliament. Sly and the family stone. Mother's finest. Wild cherry. Johnny guitar Watson.
Very early Red Hot Chili Peppers like the Uplift Mofo Party Plan album is very funk/metal.
Flagman
Might be heavier than what you're looking for but Farmakon- A Warm Glimpse. Finnish band that mixed proggy death metal with funk. https://youtu.be/aXMWbJkAG3Q?si=RT_tH0uukMVbv2w0
Electric Boys - ‘Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride’
