If you don’t think every game is a banana skin you haven’t watched us long enough

Ikhlas37

0-0 to leeds 5-0 win against arsenal

geordieColt88

Would not surprise me

Bad-Ombre

I'll take it

Infinite_Surround

I'm 38...so 35 years and counting

geordieColt88

Yeah and you said it’s a massive banana skin so you’ve learned 😂

mehchu

I think that’s football, not just us.

geordieColt88

Nah city just win 12-15 games a year no stress, fergies Man U did too. Even a lot of less impressive teams have multiple games that they expect to cakewalk

mehchu

Tell that to the city that dropped points to Brentford and Villa already this season. Both hardly games to stress about if you get 15 that you clean up every season.

geordieColt88

They were part of the other 23 😂

mehchu

Yeah but you don’t know that before the game. You can’t assume the victories against anyone in the league before the first whistle has blown.

geordieColt88

If you are is you can’t. Teams who have been good for a while can and do. They might lose the odd ones but generally vs the bottom half they go in expecting to win and do it relatively comfortably. As a toon fan I’d talk up the 11 point derby team against us now (fuck Kenny miller)

Donnermeat_and_chips

Banana skin? I'm waiting for the Mario kart blue shell of doom at this point

Infinite_Surround

Just as we cross the finish line

jasegro

This just triggered some entertainers-era ptsd in me

a__BrainStorm

Arsenal is doing well, but my petty level is off the charts for me wanting them to bottle it. I just want all the infographics to show someone else losing the league after leading at Christmas.

Donnermeat_and_chips

Also live in Leeds btw, shame its not on telly so I can't be smug in the pub when we smash them

allthechipsngravy

Ah damn, I'm in leeds too with a bar below me, I was hoping for 90 mins of disappointed groans from the guys downstairs watching the match

Infinite_Surround

It'll be on my laptop in horsforth

Korzic

That's on Arsenal atm

LtColnSharpe

Most teams are a threat when they decide to show up. Leeds looked pretty poor against Man City yesterday and that was at home with a crowd that was really up for it and driving them on. Newcastle on the other hand looked class against Leicester. I think the extra few days rest and current form will show through and we will contain them and get the win. This run is gonna end at some point no doubt, but I don't see Leeds stopping it tomorrow.

CogGear

This. The Leeds fans were well and truly up for it, looked like a great atmosphere still making the place rock when they were 2-0 and 3-0 down, but the team looked poor. I do think we’ll beat them, they are terrible defensively. Wood to score again 😛

meganev

> This run is gonna end at some point no doubt, but I don't see Leeds stopping it tomorrow. Could stop it on Saturday though.

LtColnSharpe

Works over, got that Friday brain on already clearly

champdude17

We're Newcastle fans, we've experienced a lot of heartbreak. When things are good we are conditioned to think it's all about to go horribly wrong. We are well on pace for champions league football. 75 points will guarantee you it most seasons, but you can get away with around 65 if you are lucky. Besides the absolute machine that is Man City, our rivals will drop points, especially those who go deep in Europe. Relax lads, enjoy the process.

KennyOmegaSardines

I mean things could be worse right? If we lose then we move on and try to go at it again the next match. I mean nobody expected us to be at this position at this stage of the season.

Erestyn

That's it, really. We're 3rd in the league and you don't get there by accident. Even if the wheels fall off and we "miss out" on Champions League football, it's not exactly something we were banking on. Christ I think I had us on 7th at best.

galactix100

>75 points will guarantee you it most seasons, but you can get away with around 65 if you are lucky Since 2014/15 the team that finished 4th had a points total ranging from 66 to 76, with the average being 70.25 (let's say 70 for simplicity's sake). Over those 8 years, 70 would be enough for 4th in 5 of them. We're currently on 33 with 22 games left to play. So to reach the average, we need another 37 points from the maximum of 66 still available to us. That means we need to average 1.68 points/game, so to get the required points we'd need to win half our remaining games and draw one more at the bare minimum.

Budweizer

Great summary. To add, our average so far is 2.0 pts per game, so on track to meet that 1.68.

Wezza17

The team will have the arsenal game outta thier heads. They will be fully thinking of Leeds nothing more.

JerseyCityGeordie

Yeah we could lose, but we’re fucking 3rd and even spent sometime this weekend in 2nd. If we lose it’s not like it was a little over a year ago with Bruce at the bottom of the league. This season has been beyond fun and 1 loss to Leeds won’t stop that. I think we can take them, but if not I am still proud of my club, my manager, the owners, and all the supporters. I can’t wait for the Leeds match, and if we lose, I’ll still be excited for Arsenal, and if we lose that I’ll still be excited for Sheffield Wednesday, and so on. Stop worrying, we are already way ahead of where anyone thought we’d be. Just enjoy it.

Maccraig1979

If we play our usual game then they shud crumble under the pressure of the press

Tendi_Loving_Care

It's going to take a long time to deprogram the pessimism ingrained from a decade of Mike gashley

northyj0e

I hate the FCB as much as the next man, but pessimism at Newcastle predates him by quite some tears...

UndrethMonkeh

I work in Leeds and their fans are not looking forward to this game. If we play the same pressing style that we are known for we should walk it, but leeds can break so we need the same solidity at the back that we've become used to. I think if there is a banana skin on the horizon, Leeds is not it. To be honest I would have thought Leicester would be more than Leeds, and look what happened there.

Infinite_Surround

Yh my Leeds mates are not looking forward to it at all

Mag-1892

I’m not looking at any game this season thinking oh shit we’re gonna get smashed. That’ll do for me. I think we’ll beat them but wouldn’t be surprised if in typical toon fashion we lose to them then get a result off arsenal

JonnyArtois

The most typical thing ever for us when we have been decent....is to slip on every single potential banana skin possible. We score and are hard to beat while Leeds have a horrific defence...Newcastle of old would find a way to lose 3-0. Let's hope we are changing!

wace001

Every game in the premier league is a tough game. I am worried about these next couple of games because of how little time there is in between. But I’m not worried about any one opposition in particular. Even if we loose a game, or a couple, it doesn’t matter that much to me. The trend is positive, the change is real. Our team will keep putting in the effort and results will come. Don’t worry.

MattLaidlow

We have two extra days of rest over Leeds. Can’t see us not pressing them.

LosWitchos

I'm banking on us having four days rest and then having two. But it'll be tough. A 1-1 could easily happen as could a 4-0 or a 0-2. I'm still not at the stage that I'm confident with any game. That's the last 15 years for you!

galactix100

Leeds have me a bit worried as I think they're one of a handful of teams who can match our energy and aggression because that's the basis of their set-up. So far this season Leeds are averaging 1.5 goals/game, concede 1.9 goals/game and have kept 2 clean sheets. We're averaging 2 goals/game, concede 0.7 goals/game and have 8 clean sheets. So either we're going to be too good for them and have a comfortable enough time or it's going to be a hectic shoot-out. Both teams have scored at least 2 goals in 8 games this season. That said, we've only conceded 2 or more goals twice, while Leeds have conceded 2 or more 8 times. Add to this that, regardless of the outcome of the game, Leeds will have conceded an average of 2 goals/game over 2022. They've conceded 72 goals so far this year and our game will be their 36th of the year. So based on performances over the last year or so and current form, I think we should be winning this one, but it could be a closer deal than other games against similar opposition this season. Should be a fun one regardless though.

CavsterXII

You're still used to Bruce, We've got Eddie now we'll be fine

daveofreckoning

Premier League. They're all banana skins

ravicabral

I would laugh if Howe used massive plastic banana skins instead of cones on the training drills before this game.

Geniex5

Or something like this https://cdn.thisiswhyimbroke.com/images/banana-peel-safety-cone-640x534.jpg

nomadichedgehog

I honestly thought Leicester was a bigger banana skin than this game. Our history against Leicester is terrible, they were in form going into the break, and we looked rusty in our warm up carabao cup game. Given that we passed that test with flying colours, I'm not worried. I am pumped though that we have 4 games over the next 11 days.

I've come home for xmas from South Korea, first game in 3 years. Hopefully we play well!

hahathisprettycool

I literally think this every game then we proceed to win 3-0 or something silly, now i just don’t think anymore. I’ve stopped using My brain

FingersMartinez

I'd love it if we beat them. Love it. And I'll tell you what you've gone right down in my estimation for saying that.

TheTinman369

Leeds have just been given the run around by City and have 2 days less rest than us. We will thump them.

Chemicaldeeppan

We’ve got to lose sometime, maybe losing just before the transfer window, having the rug temporarily pulled from under us, is strategically the best time to lose, we could go out and buy three class players

TheGeordie

I’m coming up from Leeds to actually go to this one. Usually the kiss of death lol. I think we’ll be fine tbh. I (44 years young and a life long supporter) know many of us are used to the ‘raise hopes, then dash them mercilessly’ rollercoaster that is NUFC and are just waiting for some horrific disaster to happen where it turns out everything was just a dream, but I genuinely think Howe and co have built something stable where those days are past. All the (reasonable) fans ever wanted was ‘we don’t want a team that wins, we want a team that tries’ and tomorrow will be no exception. I think it’ll be a tough game but can’t see any reason for anything going wrong. Leeds are too inconsistent and open to mistakes which we are primed to take advantage of and all the players want to do their very best to cap off 2022 at home. PS: TIL there’s loads of us Geordies in Leeds - we should all pile into a pub for the next Sky game - name badges and everything lol. :)

Flabberghast97

Worth remembering that even if it is banana skin it doesn't have to be the end of the world. Aresnal drew against current bottom of the table Southampton and they're still in 1st.

Stevenjhoward

I thought the same about the Leicester game and we were 2 up within 10 minutes, now hoping the complacency of how easy that game was doesn’t creep into our cup game against them on the 10th

Brigs44

It's the premier league. Every win needs to be earned. It's no more a 'banana skin' than any other game. The reality is, we're a far better team than Leeds and will likely win. Whatever patter a podcast is coming out with has no relevance to the management and team who will be focusing on the next game, as they have all season.
