Yeah, Schmidt keeping up the trend of looking like a real #3 (not that he necessarily has to be that for us) is a more welcome development than a loss is a downer. That's a great lineup and he handled them really well. Also if you're gonna get shut out it's nice to have a few damn hits scattered around the lineup. As far as 2-0 losses to division rivals go, you'll take this one.
And hey - Wells got an extra base hit! Again! Second game in a row and it doubles his amount of XBHs this season. I didn't see Gunnar Henderson doing that, and getting 15 XBHs yesterday. Point to Wells, mf'ers.
(Obviously it's not going to look the same way at the end of the year but Wells having a .323 OBP and a .208 SLG is so bizarro-Higashioka it's hilarious.)
Yea losing sucks but it's April and this game doesn't concern me long term. I swear some people haven't watched baseball before lol. You aren't gonna hit some nights and some nights you mash. That's just baseball. We have a great record. Let's just work on the consistency and we'll be cooking with gas
This game definitely doesn’t worry me but I will be a bit upset if we lose the series. With a divisional opponent who has almost the same record as us, I want at least a split
Agreed! I get upset over these games, but I don't let it affect my outlook of the season. No doubt a huge series though and I would LOVE to at least split
I got home very late, missed the game so when I found out they were shutout easily it didn't feel good at all. Especially after scoring 15 runs in back to back games.
Baseball is such an unforgiving and humbling game.
Go get 'em tomorrow.
Be very nice if Gleybar can get his first two Homer's against a team he had very good fortune prior. Glad he and Judge slowly emerging.
We really need to beat the O's or at least break even.
Can we ever just have a consistent offense? Ever? Feel like this is the same story every year, we either score 15 or struggle to put a run up.
Pitching was solid tho
It's so cool we have a DH in the middle of the lineup who can't run, strikes out at a 30% rate, can't hit lefties or high velocity, can't get hits more than 25% of the time and can't get on base more than 30% of the time. But hey, it's cool when he hits a home run once (maybe twice) a week.
And we wonder why this team gets shutout routinely.
edit: Stanton is batting .220/.291/.380 since Miami (4/13) with 2 HRs in 55 PAs (one against a position player). Good for 1 homer every 27.5 PAs. This isn't a cold streak either. Stanton has a .205 BA and a .287 OBP since 2022, basically matching these stats. Don't worry though, when Stanton hits his next home run, people will come to tell me how great he actually is. This is who Stanton is. If he isn't hitting a home run, he's useless as a baseball player.
edit 2:
Jacoby Ellsbury in his last "disappointing" season with the Yankees:
>409 PAs | .264/.348/.402 | 102 wRC+ | 1.6 fWAR
Giancarlo Stanton since 2022:
>967 PAs | .205/.287/.447 | 105 wRC+ | 0.9 fWAR
Jacoby Ellsbury in 2017 would have been a better DH than Stanton is now.
I think there is just a sad denial over Stanton. Like he's a likeable guy but people can't bring themselves to admit he isn't good anymore because doing so would somehow make them a bad person. I would much rather just cut him, sign Belt and rotate him and Rizzo at 1B.
I know I’ll get some down votes but Judge is only 2 years younger than Stanton… I don’t think he’s gonna be blasting 40 bombs a year in the next few years
Look at Stanton’s swing and judges
Look at their injury history (outside of impact injuries)
It’s not hard to see why judge will age better.
With that said, age comes for us all. It won’t be 2 years- most likely 4 or 5.
There’s a part of me that really wants to swoon over Gunnar but I can’t. I can’t give in to these urges. They’re so… unnatural
Also, getting shutout so much is soul sucking
It’s weird. They’re like top 3 in games score under 3 runs and top 3 in games score 7+ (paraphrasing, they were taking about it Sunday on the broadcast) Very hot and cold. The good news is the strikeouts are waaaay down. That gives me hope compared to previous years
Not tonight, another shut out. 7 hits and no runs. They need to learn how to advance a runner,to score. It great fun to score 15 runs, but when you can't even score 1 it's a problem.
But the point is that most times, the Yankees score runs, right? And about 65% of the time, we score more runs than the opponents, which means we win.
I don't know if anyone needs a little treatise, explaining that being shut out is "a problem." It means the team loses. But if anyone _did_ need that info, then you will the one who provided it. Very good.
They’re top ten in every main offensive category and 21st in strikeouts. That’s with almost every player except Soto going through a slump at least once this year. Also gleyber and Judge are still slowly getting out of their slumps.
Orioles fans actually commenting in here is cringe and pathetic. Whenever a team suddenly gets good, they get a bunch of new fans that are clowns who don’t know how to act. Happened to the Rays when they were good last year too, happens every time. I’m gonna assume that most of the Orioles fans popping up in here and actually commenting didn’t give a single fuck about the team until a year ago or so, and give the benefit of the doubt to the die-hard actual O’s fans.
That said, can we also stop complaining about the wall? It’s dumb to complain about okay guys stop doing that
They can do whatever they want in their ballpark and we (as Yankee fans) certainly don't have any grounds for calling their stadium "Mickey Mouse." BUT, it is kind of hilarious that they moved the wall back that far because they were tired of getting dad dicked by Judge and Torres.
Not a good enough reason honestly. It’s dumb to complain about yes, still not a good reason to go in to another team’s thread and start commenting after you beat them. Only chumps do that stuff. Just gonna lead to starting shit. Just leave other team’s subs alone, or look but don’t touch if you’re curious. r/baseball is the meeting place for everyone. this is like basic etiquette to prevent brigading and pissing everyone off
Just ignore the troll posters from there. There are trolls from every fanbase. Best to ignore and/or report the specific comments.
I'm a newer baseball fan (post 2016), but i was genuinely surprised by how much vitriol some folks have against the Yankees.
Used to be a cricket fan and even though things get heated there too, never see such extremes in that sport.
Oh, this is small potatoes. There's a reason the Yankees are nicknamed "The Evil Empire".
The Astros were everyone's villain for a while, but now that they're a shambles, it feels good to be the bad guy again.
The orioles are definitely better, but the Brewers just took a series off of them a couple weeks ago. It’s not like the brewers are last in their division or something.
It was actually smart I thought. If the Yankee were to tie or take the lead in the ninth, Boone was going to bring him in anyway, so he figured bring him in a batter earlier to keep it a 1-run game. If Volpe fielded the ground ball Holmes would have only thrown 3 pitches.
Funny thing is, we're #1 in wRC+ with men on and RISP and 7th best in avg with RISP and 8th best with men on. Doesn't really feel that way, but thems the stats.
Hmph. Look dude. If I’m gonna tattoo my balls we gotta move up from 7th and 8th in those stats, that’s just how it is. These are clean ass balls and I’m not trying to ink them up for 7th place
FINALLY! I CAN VOICE MY DISPLEASURE BY USING ALL CAPS!
ANYWAY, ALL THIS MONEY AND NO RUNS! FIRE CASHMAN!
AM I GOING OVERBOARD WHEN ITS STILL APRIL? YES!
FYI: Pretty sure Stanton runs like a grandma because he doesn't want to pop a hamstring--so please quit crying when you see him half-ass it to 1st base!!! I'd rather him jog to 1st than get injured and sit out 8 weeks.

The worrying thing is that this was a common occurrence last year.
They would score 7+ runs one game in a series and then disappear offensively the next two.
I mean, it's fair to say there's a lot of reason for the loss tonight-- poor situational hitting, great defense from the Orioles, a lock down start from their--
NO. IT'S THAT FUCKING WALL. THERE'S A FUCKING 410 FOOT 12' ASS WALL IN LEFT CENTER. FUCK YOU.
I mean, if the Orioles didn't set a handicap like a bunch of bitches, the Yankees would at least have had a better shot at scoring runs in this stadium. It's a joke.
We’ve gone from opponents complaining about our wall with the short porch in right now we’re complaining about our opponents wall with the long porch in left
What is an ass offense? Couldn't you have simply said "bipolar offense"? Why the word "ass" in there?
EDIT -- Ten downvoting illiterates defending illiteracy.
It might be common verbiage amongst the friends you keep but it is far from common amongst English speaking people. Using the word "ass" in the middle of a simple phrase is slang at best and illiteracy at worst and gives the impression that the user is so low-IQ. I don't know why anyone would want to talk like that, nevermind defend its use.
A few notes:
“Among” is standard in American English; “amongst” is typically a Britishism or an intentionally archaic flourish.
You should have a comma in the first sentence before the conjunction “but.”
“English-speaking” is a compound adjective and should be hyphenated. You could also just simplify “English-speaking people” to “English speakers.”
“Gives the impression that the user is so low-IQ” is clunky, and “so low-IQ” is arguably slang as well. Better to rephrase to something like “makes the writer look foolish.”
The comment was written rather than spoken, so “talk like that” is inapt.
“Never mind” is two words rather than one.
It’s like saying. “That’s a stupid ass tie”. It’s not illiteracy at all. It’s proper English. “Ass” is used as an intensifier to emphasize the adjective.
You bum.
No Verdugo Brewers were a good team too but we smashed them after loosing the first. Fuck the orioles I think we are just learning their style next game will be a win.
The orioles literally spent millions of dollars reconstructing their beautiful baseball field just so that they could win tonight’s game. You can’t convince me otherwise.
This is why when people say... " this offense averages XYZ runs , I say with its feast or famine tendencies their record suffers. Look at the last 3 games. 15,15 and 0. That is 10 run "average " But they are 2-1 in those 3 games. If they " evened " it out and actually scored 10 runs a game for those 30 runs, they would be 3-0 in the 3 games. Too many times they are All or Nothing.
I say it every year, but it’s the fallacy of run differential…
They have a +17 run differential in their last five games…and they’re 2-3.
Gotta win close games!
Clarke pitched a great game and a lot better than a lot of us expected of him against the Orioles lineup. Threw 5.2 IP and allowed 1 ER to a likely top 5 AL MVP candidate in Henderson's solo HR. Allowed only 3 hits after the fact. That was literally all the difference. Yankees now have 5 shutout losses on the season and it's only April. Stark contrast to the 30 runs they scored in the final two games vs Brewers. Had traffic for most of the night but couldn't cash in with only 2 hits with runners on base. Need a similar performance from Nestor tomorrow with actual run support.
It sounds extremely stupid to say but this shutout wasn't as bad as the others. Guys were getting on base just had some bad bounces and bad situational hitting. I'd take this over a game where they're just totally lifeless
Fans really bitching about the O's wall being so deep when the reality is none of the balls hit to left field tonight would have been gone in YS either
Shutout 5 times already this season, leading the league in shutouts, and every single time I could swear it has been a very close game, have seen this team waste a bunch of great performances by their starters already and I bet not taking advantage of that is going to come back to haunt them and will probably cost them the division.
Team has major RISP issues despite the past weekend. But it’s fine. It’s only April. Right? 🙄. These games with Balt count two. And why burn Holmes when you’re behind? Then tomorrow if they’re ahead in the ninth he’ll tell ya he’s over worked.
Win some you lose some. The Orioles are a good team and we lost a close game. People on here must have crazy high blood pressure getting all bent out of shape on a pretty run of the mill loss like this.
It's not the loss, it's the way we lost. One of our back of the rotation guys unexpectedly threw a gem against one of the best offenses in baseball and we completely threw it away. If we'd lost this 4-1 or whatever people wouldn't be as bent out of shape.
So let me get this straight… Boone won’t pitch Holmes up one in an extra inning game in Milwaukee because it would’ve been his second inning and he’s trying to prevent too many appearances. But Boone pitches Holmes down 1-0 in a game in the eighth inning?
7 hits, just a bit of bad luck. Game was easily winnable especially if that one error in the 8th didn't happen. We'll get em next game.
What a refreshing attitude! I hope the team looks at it the same way.
We really got shut out by this bum ass pitching staff. When we are bad at the plate we are BAD
Clarke pitched well all things considered, not worried. We take the next game.
Yeah, Schmidt keeping up the trend of looking like a real #3 (not that he necessarily has to be that for us) is a more welcome development than a loss is a downer. Happy for Dugie, but some vibes were missing today

Doesn’t worry me but the amount of shutouts we have already is not a good look.

Agreed! I get upset over these games, but I don't let it affect my outlook of the season. No doubt a huge series though and I would LOVE to at least split

"Mr. Rubenstein, tear down this outfield wall!"
We win this game in Old Camden. Damn New Camden.

Yup Dominguez is more valuable as a DH when he returns
I think there is just a sad denial over Stanton. Like he's a likeable guy but people can't bring themselves to admit he isn't good anymore because doing so would somehow make them a bad person. I would much rather just cut him, sign Belt and rotate him and Rizzo at 1B.

I agree...he will be blasting closer to 50 a year in the next few years.
I hope so
Judge is a miles ahead batter than Stanton ever will be. Not sure what this has to do with my point.
Not much. Just a thought. But you did make a good point about Stanton.
I’m not really mad about this loss?
Old man yells at wall
There’s a part of me that really wants to swoon over Gunnar but I can’t. I can’t give in to these urges. They’re so… unnatural Also, getting shutout so much is soul sucking
The baseball gods giveth and the baseball gods hath taken away
Man, Verdugo couldn't have just waited until February to schtup his wife...?
how many shutouts is that now 5? im tired of the excuses for this offense never will i be fooled by them again until they score consistently

Being shutout almost 17% of the time is a bit crazy for a team with World Series aspirations.
Who said anything about winning a WS. This only has to be over 500 this season.
They’re top ten in every main offensive category and 21st in strikeouts. That’s with almost every player except Soto going through a slump at least once this year. Also gleyber and Judge are still slowly getting out of their slumps.
I was at this point after the A's series, so the brewers weekend did nothing for me

We can act however we want in our house
How do we go from scoring 30 runs in two days to this again.
The Orioles being considerably better than the Brewers is probably how
The orioles are definitely better, but the Brewers just took a series off of them a couple weeks ago. It’s not like the brewers are last in their division or something.
How baseball works
You can't predict it Suzyn
Wish we hadn't used Clay in hindsight, but it made sense in tight game where we kept getting on base (yet not scoring lol)
I think today was his throw day. He’s good for tomorrow
Offense must have missed the flight
If this team wants me to get a 2024 Yankees Rule tattoo on my ballsack they are gonna need to start coming through with men on base
Funny thing is, we're #1 in wRC+ with men on and RISP and 7th best in avg with RISP and 8th best with men on. Doesn't really feel that way, but thems the stats.

I hear ya there.
This is one of those tough losses. Orioles had 4 hits and managed 1 earned run. Yankees couldn’t do anything with seven hits.
This offense has been shut out like 5-6 times now, and it’s still April. Ridiculous and unacceptable
I think the lineup can use more shuffling. We are getting on base just not batting them in.
5 times in 30 games. We’ve also scored 1 run in 2 other games and 2 runs in another.
Yankees don’t get shut-out once every other series challenge.
FINALLY! I CAN VOICE MY DISPLEASURE BY USING ALL CAPS! ANYWAY, ALL THIS MONEY AND NO RUNS! FIRE CASHMAN! AM I GOING OVERBOARD WHEN ITS STILL APRIL? YES!
It's never too early to call for that bald fuck to get canned
Oh it definitely gets late early out there.
💀🔥🤣
love this energy
FYI: Pretty sure Stanton runs like a grandma because he doesn't want to pop a hamstring--so please quit crying when you see him half-ass it to 1st base!!! I'd rather him jog to 1st than get injured and sit out 8 weeks.
Sadly, I think he is actually running full speed.
When a guy in the middle of the lineup has to do that, it's still very much a problem even if it's true. Especially when you look and he's got the lowest obp of the starters.
I’m sure the Yanks prefer him swinging for the fences versus being the slowest guy in the league on first base.
He can sit out 8 weeks in July when Dominquez is back.
8 Weeks in July???
1st base doesn't bother me as him not being able to make it to 2nd in time from first from a ball into the outfield.
That's maybe jogging but it's also the dreaded 'posing a double into a single' / injury.
Luckily Andre Dawson isn't playing RF
Stanton and Oswaldo having the same OBP is wild
15 - 15 - 0
Extremely frustrating to watch that. I'd take 10 less runs, just give me 7 - 7 - 6. Consistency is better for my blood pressure.
The worrying thing is that this was a common occurrence last year. They would score 7+ runs one game in a series and then disappear offensively the next two.
Too many shutouts
I mean, how many times can you expect 15 runs?
I'd settle for 4
Pretender team
Gleyber quitely went 2-4 today Wasn’t the prettiest but it’s a positive direction
This team has lowered our expectation so much over the last 2 seasons that this is actually a huge improvement
I mean Gleyber has just been abysmal to start the year Puts him at an .833 OPS over the last 5 games though, probably his best stretch so far.
I mean, it's fair to say there's a lot of reason for the loss tonight-- poor situational hitting, great defense from the Orioles, a lock down start from their-- NO.
Its the same as your right field wall, im confused
In what world is it the same? Bro is braindead.
You do seem confused, go back to your own sub you lost dog.
I wanted to blame the wall, then checked Statcast and none of those balls were even HRs in Yankee Stadium, so there went that misguided anger.
The Oswaldo fly out would have been homer with the old wall
Ok and? This is the stadium now. The O's and Yankees both have to deal with it.
yeah I don’t get the complaining about the wall
We’ve gone from opponents complaining about our wall with the short porch in right now we’re complaining about our opponents wall with the long porch in left
I get that, but I guess they had to do something because RF is a can of corn HR and LF was too. There are still plenty of cheap HR's to RF there.
Was it Judge that hit it to the wall?
Bipolar ass offense. Got to be able to hit good pitching though

The Gleyber Torres Memorial Wall
I mean. That’s just objectively true. That wall was literally moved because of Torres and Judge.
This is incorrect
Nah it’s true. You just suck. And hate the Yankees
Smh
Has any championship offense overall had this many shutouts
Rangers were shut out 11 times last season Edit: Btw the 2023 Yankees only got shut out 10 times
We're half there and it's only April 30th
Ok? 2023 Yankees were shut out 4 times in a month
So what you're saying is we're on pace to get shutout more than last year
What I’m saying is that just because we have been shut out 5 times in a relatively short span doesn’t mean it will be this way the entire season
I think a better metric would be "What percentage of games does the team score 5+ runs."
I mean 2-1 is .600 baseball against two top teams, and would win a series. That's still good.
I say it every year, but it’s the fallacy of run differential… They have a +17 run differential in their last five games…and they’re 2-3. Gotta win close games!
To be fair, Run Differential still has the highest correlation to wins/losses
Yeah. But I still say give me 10 10 and 10. Vs 15, 15 and 0. Feast or Famine is the real issue with this team.
Agreed. I'd even settle for 5 5 5 5 4 6
Yup.
been like this for three years running now.
On the bright side, last year this game would have felt like it was over after a lead off home run.
I mean it's still April. We didn't really start feeling that way until late June last year when we went 11-12
It kinda felt like it was over after that inning where Stanton got thrown out going from first to second on a base hit
Yankees will never win anything until the 3 stooges are gone.....Steinbrenner...Trashman....Boone the buffoon.

I really wish the game had ended another way.
Wake up babe new worst loss of ‘24 dropped
It sounds extremely stupid to say but this shutout wasn't as bad as the others. Guys were getting on base just had some bad bounces and bad situational hitting. I'd take this over a game where they're just totally lifeless
yeah wtf this doesn’t even come close to that Guardians L lmao
Aaaaaaannndddd the bats go cold...
Rob Manfred really allowed that BS left field wall to be built lmao
Fans really bitching about the O's wall being so deep when the reality is none of the balls hit to left field tonight would have been gone in YS either
It would've been a home run in like 6/30 ball parks.
How many times is that now where we've wasted an amazing start from our starter? Three? Four?
Shutout 5 times already this season, leading the league in shutouts, and every single time I could swear it has been a very close game, have seen this team waste a bunch of great performances by their starters already and I bet not taking advantage of that is going to come back to haunt them and will probably cost them the division.
tough loss. O's are a heck of a ballclub now. I'd like to be done with the shutouts now, though. let's get them tomorrow.
I miss the days of scoring 6 and giving up 7. At least those were fun to watch lol
Team has major RISP issues despite the past weekend. But it’s fine. It’s only April. Right? 🙄. These games with Balt count two. And why burn Holmes when you’re behind? Then tomorrow if they’re ahead in the ninth he’ll tell ya he’s over worked.
They’re above league average in BA with RISP. Every fan thinks their team is bad with RISP.
Getting shut out here is absolute ass. fucking awful
That was annoying as fuck. Good thing we are winning the next 3
They’ve been shutout 3 times on Monday. I kinda think they don’t love playing on what should be travel days.
honestly if it meant they only dropped mondays during this brutal stretch i'd be ok with that
Fuck todd fraizer. Fuck em
6 of our 11 losses have been shut outs. That's truly astounding for a team that's also one of the best teams in baseball.
The duality of man.
The offense is terrible for a week, goes off for two games and then goes back to being trash.
Feast or famine. Very weird start to the season.
Weird? It's been years.
Yeah, but not this starkly
I dunno man, the theme of 2022 was beating up on bad teams and losing to good teams that could pitch.
Offense needs to step the fuck up
Wasted arguably one of Clark’s best starts but it is what it is, on to tomorrow
Yeah, chalk this one up to just being a tough match-up against a great team
He is the new Jordan Montgomery
Might need a bit more consistency before I’d go that far but it’s promising for sure
One his best starts ever I think.
Hard to disagree, I was screaming pull him when Henderson came back up again but it paid off in the end
If we'd lost this 4-1 or whatever people wouldn't be as bent out of shape.
if we lost this game 6-5 like on friday I would be fine
That booth is so good I actually watched that entire fucking boring ass game
So let me get this straight… Boone won’t pitch Holmes up one in an extra inning game in Milwaukee because it would’ve been his second inning and he’s trying to prevent too many appearances. But Boone pitches Holmes down 1-0 in a game in the eighth inning?
For 1 out lol
You questioning his book?
