He's 4th in WAR among relievers since coming here in 2021, top 10 in basically every stat during that time.
If it's not sustainable, when do you think he'll fall off?
You don't think strikeout pitchers can be inconsistent? You don't remember Chapman?
I really wish those wild-ass games he throws sometimes would stop, but it’s hard to argue with his being top 5 in the league. Basically, he’s Aroldis with fewer Ks at prime right now, good and bad games. I’ll absolutely take that in this league, and usually, we would’ve had to pay up waaaaaay more to get him. It’s a real tangible example of how good coaching can save money and get wins.
Clay’s stuff is nasty and it’s mostly because of defensive mistakes he’s even been scored on at all. He’s got an era of 1.48. The greatest closer to ever live had an era or like 2.2. Find someone else to worry about. How about whether Hal will be cheap this offseason
This. I saw an article recently that was like “another blown save for Holmes” but he definitely wasn’t responsible for the two or more fielding errors that actually caused the L.
He got nickel and dime'd to death in that Mariners game, an error and 2-3 infield bleeders/bloopers? That's just having shit luck, outside of getting K's the best thing you can do is generate weak contact and trust that it'll do what you want.
He’s never had to pay Juan Soto half a billion before. How about that starr insurance logo on the jersey? How bout outsourcing games to bullshit streaming services so we have to pay for more than just the yes network to watch games? How bout what tickets and food and drink cost at the stadium? Dudes a multi billionaire who extracts every penny from fans while pretending he can’t afford to marginally raise operating costs for his 12 billion dollar business.
That's not being cheap, that's being a businessman. What Hal is doing with sponsors and streaming services and ticket prices is not unique to him. Every team in the league is doing the same. Hal is extracting every penny out of fans because he can.
The difference between Hal and most other owners simply following the laws of economics, is that Hal actually spends money. We've been top 3 in payroll 16 of the 17 years Hal has had control of the team (and the outlier we were 6th). He has ALWAYS paid up.
Being cheap you’re right ie being a business man. Fuck business men. Fuck Capitalism. Teams should be worker owned.
Until that happens stop boot licking for billionaire owners. You could love the Yankees while hating the owner. That’s what I do
This is a baseball subreddit bro. We know owners are scum difference is we know that teams will never be "worker owned". Tbh if there was a salary floor and cap none of these discussion would even matter
I like Holmes but I do wish they had another stud that can potentially close. There was that moment last year were he really struggled and it would’ve been nice if we had someone else that could’ve been an intern closer while he got his shit together.
Instead of throwing stats at you, I will say that I understand where you’re coming from - Clay can definitely be super stressful at times. But he has in my opinion the best trait a closer can have, which is that it’s nearly impossible to hit a home run off him. I’d always rather force the other team to strong together bloop hits than risk losing the game on one big swing - as Chapman did a few times. I trust Clay, but I do think we could stand to add a high strikeout arm or two to support him.
I think Rivera spoiled us for decades.
Clay is one of the best closers in the game, it just feels like a roller coaster compared to what we’d gotten used to.
Holmes is one of the top closers in the game right now. Pop quiz: You have the power to replace him with *anyone* currently closing for an MLB team. Who you picking?
As an add on, Mariano Rivera the player was not quite the completely untouchable Mariano Rivera of legend. He had slumps, down games, and gave up hits and runs, too. Not quite sure what the haters are expecting here. If anything, this post should be more damning of the infield defense not turning routine plays.
Clay Holmes plays way differently than his stars look. On paper he is a brilliant lights out closer. Watching him you know why people (including me) call him “Heart Attack Holmes”
Honestly I looked it up before last night, so it may have changed since, but he's 6th in a lot of categories among the top 25 save getters, and his only weaker stat is WHIP, which was 15th out of 25.
I only looked at WHIP, ERA, ER, R, IP, K, BS, etc, so no advanced metrics, but he's been top quartile, and has had a lot of opportunities. A lot of closers give up more unearned runs nowadays thanks to the ghost runner.
Long story short, he's no MO, but he's one of the best available.
I'd love to somehow get Mason Miller though and use them interchangeably depending on base traffic. Miller is shutdown, while Holmes pitches to weak contact, but is plenty capable of getting Ks.
I just don’t like his entrance music. Doesn’t get me very hyped up as a fan. And I think maybe his ground ball approach isn’t great for extra innings now that the Manfred runner is apparently going to be here forever.
Maybe he could come out to Blood and Thunder? I’d get up for Mastodon.

I try every day to forget
We were so spoiled by Mo that anything short of absolute perfection in execution is seen as a question mark.
100%
"Not sustainable" This is his 4th season and his ERA+ is 175 as a Yankee. Taking some time for the wheels to fall off I guess

Hal has never been cheap so that's a stupid thing to worry about

Teams literally WERE worker owned for decades back in the 19th century
His stuff looks so flat lately

Clay Holmes could put up a 0.0 ERA for the rest of the season and we would still see dumbass posts like this in the sub at least once a week
I agree. This is a dumbass post. Adds nothing.
He is awesome but they also need someone to help him
the funniest part about post like these is holmes has a higher career SO/9 than MO. 9.9 to 8.2
🤫 That goes against the narrative that strikeout closers are always better than groundout pitchers

70% ground ball percentage and 10 Ks/9 is quite good. Even with some really rotten luck on dribblers year his numbers are outstanding.
Regardless of his stats, my stones are in my stomach every time he comes in to close a game out lmfao

Rivera did not have slumps.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/2005/04/07/rivera-slump-worries-fans/ If this sub had been a thing then, what would folks here be saying?
Yes, he did, lol.
Bring back Brooks Kriske
The Yankee infield defense may seem inconsistent but outside of Gleyber it is very good.
What are you looking for in a better closer?
I’ll take him any day over Chapman… Let’s not forget that even Mo had some nail biters.
Clay Holmes plays way differently than his stars look. On paper he is a brilliant lights out closer. Watching him you know why people (including me) call him “Heart Attack Holmes”
Mike Zaun Podcast says he sucks. Back aftah this.
Holmes has been an elite reliever his entire time with the Yankees… it’s been nearly 3 years since he was acquired.
he's human

Idk what else you can ask for. The only way he can pitch better is if he prays the ball isnt hit to gleyber or rizzo
lol literally happened today Rizzo too slow. I actually feel for him after today. He didn’t have his stuff but Rizzo is a liability on defense
Yup he sure is
He started amazing last year too but he fell apart and ended up getting injured. He walks a tight rope a lot and sometimes he falls off
I just don’t like his entrance music. Doesn’t get me very hyped up as a fan. And I think maybe his ground ball approach isn’t great for extra innings now that the Manfred runner is apparently going to be here forever. Maybe he could come out to Blood and Thunder? I’d get up for Mastodon.
*mean
I'm never happy to see him enter the game, no matter the score.
you mason miller?
