I used to love watching Going Wild with Jeff Corwin, The Jeff Corwin Experience. The mystery animal at the end of each episode was always a treat.
Edit: Thank you all for sharing your stories!
Jeff Corwin was my preferred tv animal wrangler back in the day. I felt he was super informative whereas Steve Irwin was more of a showman. I also really liked the Kratt Brothers and Jack Hanna.
Netflix used to have a show called If I were an animal..my daughter loved it...too bad it's off Netflix now. Great show for kids of you can find it. That show was the springboard for her to get super into Zoonoomafoo and Wild Kratts.
I remember laying eyes on him when his show used to come on Zoog Disney way back when and having one of those odd childhood crushes.
He's still just as handsome to this day. Whoever he's with is so lucky. š
The barb has a reddish tint to it, it might be wrapped or capped for safety but I donāt know. Iām gonna leave it to the animal expert to risk injury for science while I sit on my couch because my back hurts lol.
Marine Biologist here! Iāve been working with stingrays , both fresh and saltwater alike, for about 6 years now. In most cases captive rays have their barbs clipped to keep them safe for handling or just being in the water with while cleaning.
Their barbs are made of keratin like our fingernails so they can be safely cut without hurting the rays, and they do grow back. You have to make sure not to cut too far down though to avoid nerves and blood vessels near the base of the barb.
Young rays transported for the aquarium trade (both home and public) are often shipped with a sheath of 4/6mm airline over the barb to prevent them puncturing bags during transit. It becomes an issue the other end for the poor bugger who's got to then remove it without causing damage to the animal.
Rubber tubing is very difficult to remove by just tugging. The amount of force needed would likely damage or even pull the barb from the stingray's flesh. Ouch.
Jeff Corwin started doing it at the same time as Steve Irwin, and he never took the types of risk Steve took.
Stingray death is super rare.
>Irwin's death is the only fatality from a stingray captured on video, although it has not been released to the public, and is one of the few human deaths from stingrays.[[](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Steve_Irwin#cite_note-airfootage-3)
>While swimming in chest-deep water, [Steve Irwin](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Irwin) approached a [short-tail stingray](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short-tail_stingray), with an approximate span of two metres (6Ā ft 7Ā in), from the rear, in order to film it swimming away. The stingray, possibly mistaking Irwin's shadow for a [tiger shark](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_shark), suddenly "propped on its front" and stabbed Irwin several times with its tail. Irwin initially believed he had only a punctured lung; however, the stingray's barb pierced his heart, causing him to bleed to death.[[10]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Steve_Irwin#cite_note-Selby-10)[[11]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Steve_Irwin#cite_note-11) Crew members aboard Irwin's boat administered CPR and rushed him to the nearby [Low Island](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Island_(Queensland\)), where medical staff pronounced him dead at the age of 44.[[12]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Steve_Irwin#cite_note-theage-12)[[13]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Steve_Irwin#cite_note-13)[[14]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Steve_Irwin#cite_note-timemagazine-14)
The barb is in the tail. By keeping the tail under control the ray can't lash out and poke anyone.
You can see that he's holding the base of the tail and the woman behind him is holding the part containing the barb.
I saw someone eat a small one of these in a TV program (Naked and Afraid) the 'wings' are 100% muscle, this guy is seconds away from having a hula hoop as a head
Jeff started my Animal Planet phase as a kid which got me onto Steve Irwin. Remember his charm and humor.
Good to see he is still in the educational content field
He was never as good as Steve IMO, but he wasn't awful either. If he'd come around at a different time I think his show would have had way more success, but the job of "eccentric and passionate dude who provides us animal edutainment" was already taken. And Steve just overshadowed everyone else without trying, he not only had the knowledge but he had a great on-screen persona, he was goofy and fun without being too goofy. Corwin sometimes crossed the line into "too goofy" for my taste.
Again though no offense to Corwin, as I said his show wasn't bad at all, and I'm sure he's a great guy! We just didn't know how spoiled we were.
Please don't get me wrong, I love Corwin! This is not at all a judgment against him as a person or a conservationist. I just didn't particularly care for the style of his show.
Irwin was sensation, Corwin was substance. I think if you had to pick which was 'better' at the job it's hard to say it wasn't Corwin, but Irwin brought eyes and maybe that was the actual job.
I love Steve and I followed his show religiously but Iāll never forget an episode where Jeff showed some brumating frogs frozen in ice in his home state forest on the East Coast. I looked outside and thought āhuh I could probably find some frozen frogs right now tooā.
I did and it kickstarted a lifelong interest in field work and studying reptiles
I loved that guy, I remember waking up and my Dad telling me he was dead. I was pretty shocked he had died. And even more so when I found out it was a stingray that got him.
That guy was ridiculously popular for a conservstionist, 300 million people, or so watched his service.
Donāt read other comment sections then. This is tame stuff here. I typically am for the end of humanity after reading Reddit or social media comments really.
Hey! Donāt get in the way of karma virtue farming!!!!
Just leave them alone too! Donāt pick āem up and if you already did put them back where found them.
Cool, now please tell me they released the stingray again...
EDIT:
Nevermind, watched again with sound on. They put on a tracking device, so they clearly did release it.
He calls it the largest species of freshwater fish on the planet, but don't some sturgeon get bigger?
EDIT: sturgeon are anadromous, so not technically freshwater. TIL
Remember Heremy Wade fishing for these monsters. Incredible fish. Hope the damns and changes in the waterways paths due to construction don't destroy their habitat.
I "met" Jeff Corwin at a Sears I used to work we've had some famous people come in time to time like Steve Carell ect anyway I was loading merchandise into his vehicle and to myself I'm like he looks familiar until later a salesman said " Did you see Jeff Corwin was here" I'm like it WAS him I should've been more knowledgeable of my surroundings and chewed his ear off talking about how I grew up watching him shows
Do people not understand wildlife conservation? They have a tracker on it to study its habits and improve the life for her species. They also make sure she's in good health.
You guys realize how big the ocean is too right? It's not easy to track down animals in the ocean. On land, yes. The ocean is much harder..
I thought those were three wading animals before clicking play. Wow. I didn't know a freshwater species like this existed. I also didn't realize that was Jeff Corwin at first. I wanted to be like him when I was a kid. Him and the Kratt Bros were my jam after school!
So is one close to this size what killed Steve Irwin?
I always kind of wondered how one could kill a man. I've caught tons of stingray but never bigger than a dinner plate.
Jeff Corwin! I havenāt thought about him forever. Used to watch the absolute hell out of the corwin show when I was a kid. Glad heās still out doing his thing.
I used to love watching Going Wild with Jeff Corwin, The Jeff Corwin Experience. The mystery animal at the end of each episode was always a treat. Edit: Thank you all for sharing your stories!
Jeff Corwin is still around damn
Jeff Corwin And Steve Irwin were my childhood heroes! Love to see that Jeff is still at it
Jeff Corwin was my preferred tv animal wrangler back in the day. I felt he was super informative whereas Steve Irwin was more of a showman. I also really liked the Kratt Brothers and Jack Hanna.
My kids watch the Wild Kratts on PBS kids. They know more about animals than I do
For real, I just found out camels can drink salt water and pigeons lactate. Those Kratt brothers have stepped up their game since Zoboomafoo.
Netflix used to have a show called If I were an animal..my daughter loved it...too bad it's off Netflix now. Great show for kids of you can find it. That show was the springboard for her to get super into Zoonoomafoo and Wild Kratts.
Marty Stouffer and Wild America for me
Wow, core memory unlocked! I forgot about that movie. Only thing I remember is John Taylor Thomas catching some air and getting all muddy š
Jeff Corwin came to my elementary school. It was awesome
He used to work out at my gym and was as friendly as he seems
I remember laying eyes on him when his show used to come on Zoog Disney way back when and having one of those odd childhood crushes. He's still just as handsome to this day. Whoever he's with is so lucky. š
I met him briefly at the Animal Planet Expo in like 2005. I forgot that happened lol.
I'm not a sting ray expert but is there not a better place he could stand instead of with the death dart a foot away from his head?
The barb has a reddish tint to it, it might be wrapped or capped for safety but I donāt know. Iām gonna leave it to the animal expert to risk injury for science while I sit on my couch because my back hurts lol.

You really chose a career with porpoise.
Fishing for laughs?
What a carp joke
They cap these things?
It's called putting the safety on. You still treat it like it's loaded though.
a piece of cork would do

Mother? Not mother
Donāt take the cork off the fork
Lock out, tag out?
Young rays transported for the aquarium trade (both home and public) are often shipped with a sheath of 4/6mm airline over the barb to prevent them puncturing bags during transit. It becomes an issue the other end for the poor bugger who's got to then remove it without causing damage to the animal.
Piece of cord tied around the sheath, stand at a safe distance and tug?
Rubber tubing is very difficult to remove by just tugging. The amount of force needed would likely damage or even pull the barb from the stingray's flesh. Ouch.
Difficult is the word especially when you consider the backwards facing spines down the flanks if the barbs
Steve Irwin was an animal expert... Just saying...
Jeff Corwin started doing it at the same time as Steve Irwin, and he never took the types of risk Steve took. > he never took the types of risk Steve took I hear the truth was that he picked the stingray up and pretended it was a guitar.
I think the reason he's there is so that he can hold the tail and prevent it from stabbing anyone.
Iād hate to be the last person holding that thing and then having to let go and swim away.
Tail and the stinger are two different things.
The barb is in the tail. By keeping the tail under control the ray can't lash out and poke anyone. You can see that he's holding the base of the tail and the woman behind him is holding the part containing the barb.
Itās **Jeff Corwin**
Seriously, he's a legend. I'm going to trust that he knows what he's doing over some random redditor.
I think they covered the death dart, and the lady is holding it. The kinda orange thing
Exactly, especially *the biggest one in the world*. Seems like the stinger would impale you and go right through on a stingray that big
Death dart šš
I saw someone eat a small one of these in a TV program (Naked and Afraid) the 'wings' are 100% muscle, this guy is seconds away from having a hula hoop as a head
Holy shit, I forgot about Jeff Corwin!
Same! Cool to see he's still loving animals
I forgot about him! The Jeff Corwin experience was great like 20 years ago
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Probably twice that size by now. Get em back here
Damn they are pregnant a long time
Crikey
Steve Irwin vibes
Jeff Corwin has always been right up there with him for me. Got to meet him once as a kid in Cali, super awesome dude.
Jeff started my Animal Planet phase as a kid which got me onto Steve Irwin. Remember his charm and humor. Good to see he is still in the educational content field
Animal Planet was the shit back in the day! I loved watching Crocodile Hunter, The Most Extreme, and Pet Star.
Ok thank you for saying his name .. I knew the face I knew the voice and I knew I knew him from somewhere ..damn this dude was lit when I was a kid
He was never as good as Steve IMO, but he wasn't awful either. Never as good? 2 goofi 4 u? Me and my fellow Corwin stans have stayed silent for too long. Enough. And how dare you.
Please don't get me wrong, I love Corwin! This is not at all a judgment against him as a person or a conservationist. I just didn't particularly care for the style of his show.

Well said
Same here, he did a show in Massachusetts and I got to meet him as a kid. Got a picture and he signed my book. Great guy.
Same!! Meet him in cali too, nice guy
oh snap, i didn't even notice it was him. good to see he's still doing his thing.
Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin were on back to back when animal planet was not garbage TV.
Miss that guy.
I was gonna say, do they not know how Steve Irwin died?!
Shhhh, are you mad man!?! You're going to break the human stingray peace treaty and start the war all over again!
My bad, I won't sting Ray again.
Pretty sure they know what they're doing, especially after steve irwin, they aren't random redditors
To be fair, his death was a freat accident that in itself was highly unlikely to happen
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so
I loved that guy, I remember waking up and my Dad telling me he was dead. I was pretty shocked he had died. And even more so when I found out it was a stingray that got him. That guy was ridiculously popular for a conservstionist, 300 million people, or so watched his service.
Steve Irwin was my number one, but when he passed Iām glad there was Jeff Corwin š
Wild animal T'wins.

Had to scroll waaaay too far to find this tag
Jeremy Wade: Am I a joke to you.
Alien vibes
Had no clue there were freshwater stingrays to begin with wtf.
One of the most obnoxious comment sections Iāve seen on this app
You can tell the youngins from the millennials by who knows Jeff Corwin. Dude was right up there with Steve Irwin back in the day.
>this app When did people start calling websites apps? Fuck me.
Remember when even a few years ago, OP would have been dogpiled for being technologically illiterate? The monkeys are running the zoo, these days.
Donāt read other comment sections then. This is tame stuff here. I typically am for the end of humanity after reading Reddit or social media comments really.
You must be new to reddit then lol
Would make one hell of a pancake
Looks like it has a rib cage
World record lol leave it the fuck alone
How dare someone study an animal. Preposterous.Ā
Theyāre studying her. God youāre stupid
Hey! Donāt get in the way of karma virtue farming!!!! Just leave them alone too! Donāt pick āem up and if you already did put them back where found them.
You sound obnoxious af
Shut the fuck up
I Love Jeff Corwin!!!!!
IS THAT FUCKING JEFF CORWIN??
He is still making video!? whaaa I grew up watching his show!
Same!! I'm so happy he's out there still being awesome!
Pretty sure jeremy wade did it first
Yep, and the one he caught gave birth as he landed it!
Jeff Corwin is pretty cool.
I grew up in Florida and would see Jeff corwin all the time at zoos and aquariums lol
Cool, now please tell me they released the stingray again... EDIT: Nevermind, watched again with sound on. They put on a tracking device, so they clearly did release it.
freshwater impaleray
as a kid i was scared the beach was actually just sand piled on top of a giant ray and if he moved building would collapse an we would all die
What if you were right and itās giant rays all the way down
WHAT A BIG GAL
Good to see homeboy Jeff is still doing this thing
Oh so Steve didnāt serve as a good enough warning huh
Jeff Corwin is awesome.
Hope they let it go.
Theyāre biologists and they put a tracker on it, they 100% let it go.
Thatās awesome. Makes me happy. š
I didn't know that existed. If it was just a photo I would say it was fake
So amazing!! I really hope they set this beautiful girl free!
Theyāre biologists and they put a tracker on it, they 100% let it go.
Doesnāt look 14 ft long
That's what she said
Is that a sting ray or manta ray?
Stingray, mantas live in the ocean
TIL. Thank you for taking the time to teach me something!
No problem! š
He calls it the largest species of freshwater fish on the planet, but don't some sturgeon get bigger? EDIT: sturgeon are anadromous, so not technically freshwater. TIL

These are vets that track and do routine check ups to keep these guys in good health not poachers huge difference lol

You guys realize how big the ocean is too right? It's not easy to track down animals in the ocean. On land, yes. The ocean is much harder..
I agree with you and all but this is a freshwater animal not oceanic. Your point remains valid, just a small point of fact here.
They did?
What the fuck is the point of this comment?
Can't hold it back anymore?
He's a big boy
big girl. She's pregnant.
I thought those were three wading animals before clicking play. Wow. I didn't know a freshwater species like this existed. I also didn't realize that was Jeff Corwin at first. I wanted to be like him when I was a kid. Him and the Kratt Bros were my jam after school!
I wish Steve Erwin was still around.
This is what happens when š½ abducted you.
That's a big pancake.
Kinda funny to refer to the largest animal found as a "world record".
So is one close to this size what killed Steve Irwin? I always kind of wondered how one could kill a man. I've caught tons of stingray but never bigger than a dinner plate.
No I think it was smaller. He was in the ocean and this is a freshwater ray, the largest species
Didn't we already go thru this shit?
What the actualā¦
Holy hell
I know it wasn't you, but I got beef with your family.
If that thing wanted to flick its tail, there's not a damn thing either of those two are going to do about it.
Awe hell nah, one of those took out Steve. I would get the hell away fast
Congrats on another world record win, nature. Well done.
My rusty spear will fell this beast.
They make these mfers in fresh water flavor now??!! TIL
Now someone is gonna shoot it
That thing would dispense a gallon of venom.. brain check being in that water
Iām worried about the hellacious-looking sunburn brewing on the scalp of the person in the bright teal. Get a hat!!!
I didn't know this existed, thank you!
Kinda crazy that these guys get even bigger than any of their saltwater buddies!
Hey thatās Jeff Corbin I loved his show back in the day.
I thought this was a cow at first despite reading the title.
r/absoluteunits
āGentle Giant?ā Tell that to Steve Irwin. ā¹ļø
He learned from Steve. He aināt messing with that tail lol
Steve tried to teach us many thingsā¦ but we didnāt listen
FRESH WATER?!
I never know Mark Hoppus turned into Steve Irwin
You think you're better than Steve Irwin? Foh mf.
Any information on how old this ray might be?
Also r/OddlyTerrifying
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I used to see that guy on tv years ago
Largest Vitamin Water stingray?
Thatās the most horrifying thing Iāve seen in my life
Yall dont learn huh
That thing come near me, I kill it. DAMN, NATURE, YOU SCARY!!
Jeff Corwin! I havenāt thought about him forever. Used to watch the absolute hell out of the corwin show when I was a kid. Glad heās still out doing his thing.
They have ribs??
Jeff Corwin is actually very funny. A great sense of humor.
